Betty Jane Lewis Burke, 89, of Magnolia Manor, widow of Robert R. Burke died Friday, July 2, 2010 at Hospice House. born Sept. 13, 1920, in Strasburg, OH, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Emma Lengler Lewis. She retired form Haynes Stellite in Kokomo, IN. Surviving are two sons, Michael Burke and his wife Mary Ann of Greenwood and Roger Burke and his wife Julie of Cedarburg, WI; a half sister, Joan Peacock of Kokomo, IN; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Marguerite, her brother Charles and a half brother, Wilbur.

Nathan A. Simpson, Jr., 64, of 121 Augusta Circle, husband of Pat Barrett Simpson, died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at his home. born in Tifton, GA, he was a son of Janet Elizabeth Stembridge Simpson and the late Rev. Nathan A. Simpson, Sr. He was a retired superintendent with Greenwood Metro District and was a US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam Era. He served in the SC National Guard, was a member of Masonic Lodge #25, where he was a 32nd degree Mason and was a Shriner, going through both the York and Scottish Rites. He was a member of Hodges Church of God. Surviving is his wife of the home; his mother of Greenwood; a son, Joe N. Simpson and his wife, Nancy, of Greenwood; five daughters, Vanesa Mountz and her husband, Sam, of Greenwood, Liz Simpson of Ninety Six; Sissie Sheppard and her husband, James, of Hodges, Tammy Johnson and her husband, Tommy, of Chappells, Kim Morris and her husband, Jimi, of Ninety Six; a brother, Jansen Simpson and his wife, Elizabeth, of Ninety Six; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Simpson.

William D. “Bill” Montgomery, Jr., 67, of 425 Circle Drive, husband of Rebecca Sherfield Montgomery, died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at his home. born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late William D. Montgomery, Sr. and Vivian Arant Montgomery. He was a graduate of Ninety Six High School and Newberry College and worked with Gary Russ Chevrolet as a sales representative and was the co-owner of Montgomery-Kemp Auto Brokers. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Surviving is his wife of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn M. and Wade Richardson of Kennesaw, GA and Allye and Tim Godwin of Greenwood; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bee and Sally Montgomery of Greenwood and Dan and Melissa Montgomery of Ninety Six; a brother and sister-in-law, Jake and Elizabeth Montgomery of Chappells; 11 grandchildren, Trevor, Rebecca, Gracie, Justin, Brady, Samantha, Zoey, Will, Josh, Luke and Evie.
Mrs. Mary Charles Sowell
Johnston, SC Graveside Services for Mrs. Mary Charles Holmes Sowell, age 76, will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 11 o’clock at Philippi Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bland Funeral Home Monday evening from 5- 7 pm.
Mrs. Sowell died Friday, January 14, 2011. She was born in Augusta, GA, a daughter of the late Charlie and Zilla Smyer Holmes. Mary Charles was a retired school teacher having taught in Edgefield County Schools for a number of years and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
She is survived by sons: Charles Sowell and Joey (Marsha) Sowell; daughters: Missy (Paul) Sowell, and Elizabeth Sowell; sister: Margaret Ann Noel; grandsons: J. P. and Will Aftring.

Mrs. Marie Garrett, 70, of Courtney Road in Trenton, died Monday, Jan.10, 2011 at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 13, at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Trenton, with burial in the church cemetery.
born in Edgefield County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Mason Sr. and Berdell Hamilton Mason. She worked in the Edgefield County School System and was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charlie Garrett; two daughters, Rita R. Garrett of West Columbia and Chandra T. Garrett of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sisters, Louise Hammond of Trenton and Linda Roberson of Aiken; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives.
She was preceded in death by one son, Frederick Wallace Garrett.

Jeff Morton
Mr. Jeff Morton, 70, of Sycamore Street in North Augusta, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. at Old Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Limuer Myers officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Morton, a native of Edgefield County was a member of Young Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jeff Morton Jr. and Eddie (Renee) Morton: four brothers, Sammie (Alberta) Morton; George Morton, Raymond Morton and Nathaniel Morton; four sisters, Annie (Frank) Nelson, Gertrude Morton, Florence (Charles) Jones and Mary (Rufus) McManus; a devoted niece, Sandy Morton; two grandchildren, Jauquez Morton and Zee Sullivan; a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives. Benjamin Frontis Timmerman
Funeral services for Mr. Benjamin Frontis Timmerman, 83, of Hanahan, were held Saturday, Jan.15, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Bland Funeral Home in Johnston. Burial followed in Spann cemetery in Ward.
Mr. Timmerman, a native of Ward, died Wednesday, Jan.12. He was a son of the late John Henry and Iola Powell Timmerman. At one time, Mr. Timmerman taught at Rutledge Business College in Charleston and recently had been employed by Sam’s Club and WalMart. He attended Pittman Street Baptist Church in North Charleston and was a member of Ward Baptist Church.
Survivors include a nephew, Robert Bussey of Mt. Pleasant; and a sister-in-law, Alice Timmerman of Ward.

Mrs. Sandra Kay Rushton Barron, 59, of W.A. Reel Dr., died Monday January 17, 2011 at the Medical College of Georgia.
A memorial Service will be held Friday January 21, 2011 at 3 P.M. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Barron was a native of Aiken, S.C. and was of the Baptist Faith. She was a former Production Line Supervisor at Murray Biscuit Co.
Survivors include one son- Brian (Ashleigh) Frazier, Augusta; one Daughter- Pam Cockrell, Edgefield; three Brothers- Randy Rushton, Terry Rushton, and Larry Crocker; one Sister- Diane (David) Hudson; five Grandchildren- Stephen Clark, Ashley Clark, Keith Cockrell, Jesse Sligh, Hayden Frazier; four Great-Grandchildren. Mrs. Barron was predeceased by a sister Phyllis Mixon.

James Anthony Powell, 41, of 5503 Highway 178, died Thursday, June 24, 2010. born in Greenwood, he was a son of Marie Smith Powell Turpin and the late J. C. Powell. He was employed by Harvley’s Scrap Yard and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving is an aunt, Dorothy Reynolds and her husband, Carl, of Swansea; two great uncles, Jessie Chavis and his wife, Susie, and George Chavis and his wife, Linda, all of North; and Maude Lee and E. J. Harvley, by whom he was raised. He was preceded in death by a half brother, Roger Dale Powell.
