Funeral services for Mrs. Addie Smith-Ligons, of Ridge Spring, were held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ernest Gordon, pastor, and the Rev. Delmar Calloway, eulogist. Burial was in the Bacon Chapel Holiness cemetery.
She leaves to cherish her memories; her husband of 50 plus years, the Rev. Joe R. Ligons; daughters, Wanda (Melvin) Ligons, Ridge Spring, Lona (Dennis) Padgett, Ridge Spring, Ivory (Gloria) Ligons, Ridge Spring, Joseph (Rena) Ligons Jr., West Columbia, Toney (Sharon) Ligons, Ridge Spring, and Tonya Ligons, West Columbia; grandchildren, Erica, Brittany, Khadijah, Marquez, Amber, Toney Jr. and Shannon (Todd) Williams; three brothers, Hazel (Inez) Smith Jr., James (Dorothy) Smith, both of Johnston, and Jackie(Grace) Smith Aiken; sister-in-law, Doris Smith, Aiken; sisters, Bessie Gomillion, Ruthie (Pastor Alvin) Ligons, Ann (John) Tanks, Mary (Freddie) Elam, all of Ridge Spring, Ruby Smith, Columbia, and Brenda Smith, Johnston; an aunt, Willie M. Raiford, Johnston; and other relatives.

O. Lee Sturkey
O. Lee Sturkey, 67, of East Gold Street in McCormick, husband of Carole Mueller Sturcky, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010 at Self- Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Plum Branch, with burial in Plum Branch cemetery with military honors.
Mr. Sturkey was the son of the late Oscar Lee and Ethel Speer Sturkey. He was a native of Plum Branch and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a retired attorney in McCormick and a U.S. Navy veteran.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: a son, Jefferson Lee (Tatum) Sturkey, Simpsonville; two granddaughters, Karson and Kennedy; two brothers, Marion Foster Sturkey, Plum Branch, and Ralph Henry Sturkey Columbia; a special niece, Francesca Sammantino; along with 10 nieces and nephews.

Earle B. Sumerel, 73, formerly of 210 Larkin Drive, widower of Patricia Jean Sumerel, died Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Saluda Nursing Center. born in Greenwood County, he was the son of the late Ithial Benjamin Sumerel and Frances Ruth Hughes Sumerel. Earle retired from Stockman Oil Company where he was a fuel oil truck driver. He was of the Church of God faith. Surviving are three daughters, Ms. Linda Rowe of the home, Mrs. Tammy Buzhardt of Batesburg and Mrs. Kathy Dorn of Greenwood; a sister, Jane Alexander of Greenwood; three brothers, Wayne Sumerel and Marvin Sumerel, bothof Greenwood and Mike Sumerel of North Augusta; five grandchildren. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Becky Minick. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Corey Reed, Justin Smith, Tony Minick and John McDowell. He was formerly employed by Simple PC, was a member of The Band of Brothers and played drums with many musical groups in the area. Surviving is his sister, Joy Derriso of Belfair, WA and will be deeply missed by all of his friends.

Jacob Carroll Arant, 91, of 964 Highway 39, Chappells, died Thursday, October 13, 2011. born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Shedrick Summers and Allye Bullock Arant. Jake was a graduate of both Newberry College and Wofford College and was a US Navy veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He taught for two years at Silverstreet High School, where he was principal and coach for the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams. He retired as the vice president of Saluda Shirt Company after more than 30 years of service, where he found his “second home” among many loyal friends and company employees. Jake was the oldest and longest surviving member of Soule Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. Surviving are his son, Jacob C. Arant, Jr. and his wife, Martha Anne, of Chappells; two grandchildren, Andrea Parsons and her husband, Shannon, of Chappells and Jon-Michael Davis and his wife, Summer, of Richmond, KY; five great grandchildren, Benjamin Jacob Parsons, Mason Davis Parsons, Samuel Andrew Parsons, Briley Bennett Davis and Paxton Raine Davis and a sister, Grace Utsey of Abbeville. He was also blessed with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his first wife, Mattie Timmerman Arant in 1975 and his second wife, Elizabeth Workman Arant in July, 2011 and sisters, Lucy Arant Webb, Vivian Arant Montgomery and Catherine Arant.
