CHERAW – Lubertha Connie “Berta” Burns, 44, died Jan. 10, 2009.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Jan. 15 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in Foundry Hill cemetery.
Luberta was born Feb. 24, 1964 to the late Wallace and Rebecca Burns. She was educated in Chesterfield County Public Schools where she graduated in 1981. She confessed Christ and joined Pee Dee Union Baptist Church where she served as a member until her death.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Williams; a brother, Ronald Burns and a granddaughter, Essence Melton.
Surviving is a son, Timothy Burns; two daughters, Aleshia Burns and Courtney Tillman; granddaughters, Angel Melton and Princess Leak, all of Cheraw; three brothers, Thomas (Kathy) Burns, Virgil Burns and Theodore (Mary) Burns, all of Cheraw; three sisters, Carolyn (Robert) Harrell of Portsmouth, Va., Harriette (Woodrow) Rorie of Cheraw and Mary Emma Suza of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a godmother, Steward Funderburk; also Saadia Pittman and Carrie Mae Byrd; and other relatives and friends.
Grooms Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Richard Willie Campbell
CHERAW – Richard Willie Campbell, 59, died Jan. 10, 2009.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Jan. 17 at Grooms Funeral Home and Memorial Chapel. Burial was held in Foundry Hill cemetery.
Richard was born July 3, 1949 a son of the late Longenia and Willie Campbell. He was educated in Chesterfield County Schools. He confessed Christ at an early age and attended several churches in the area. Richard was a loving father and friend. He worked several jobs in the area such as Simpson Car Lot, Ruckers Septic Line Systems and several others.
Surviving is his wife, Connie Little Campbell of Patrick; a daughter, Santanna Harley of Cheraw; a son, Richard Campbell, Jr. of Columbia; a stepdaughter, Barbara Little Ford of Cheraw; also Rev. General William, Patricia William, Sharon Fate of Bishopville; and other relatives and friends.
Grooms Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Edward Gary
CHERAW — Funeral services were hrld for .Mr. Edward Gary, at 11 a.m. Jan. 17 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in McCall Family cemetery.
Mr. Gary was the son of the late Mingo Gary and Annie McCall born Oct. 15, 1933. He attended Cheraw Public Schools. He joined Pee Dee Union Baptist Church at an early age where he received his salvation. Edward was employed at Box Mill, where he worked for 27 years. He also worked 30 years at Ina Bearing Company. He was a fun loving, kind father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny L. Gary; a son, Michael Gary; a sister, Annie Mae Dorsey; a daughter, Roberta Finklea; and four brothers, Mingo Gary, Horace Garay, James Rogers and Henry Gary.
Surviving are his children, Myra (Ervin) James of Society Hill, Gloria (Tommy) Zimmerman of Hamlet, N.C., Steven (Belinda) Gary of Bennettsville, Julia Gary of Charlotte, N.C., Theresa (Bobby) Shields, Wanda Johnson, Veronica Lock all of Cheraw, Ricky (Marian) Lock and Jeffery (Janet) Lock both of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Bernice Rutherford of New York City; an uncle, Herbert Shields of New Jersey; an aunt, Marie (Charles) Williams of Walterboro; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Deacon Jessie Sellers
PATRICK – Deacon Jessie Sellers, 79, died Jan. 12, 2009.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at Morning Star Baptist Church, Patrick. Burial was held in the church cemetery.
Deacon Sellers was born Oct. 21, 1929 to the late Deacon Nathan and Geneva (Pleasant) Sellers. He began his formal education at Rosenwood Elementary School in Patrick and continued his education at Coulter Memorial Academy in Cheraw. He was employed at Delta Mills and retired after more than 30 years. He was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities in the church, such as Sunday school teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school and vice president of the senior choir, as well as chairman of the Deacon board.
He was preceded in death by a child, Ronnie Sellers and a brother, Boykin.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Lucille Sellers; children, Jimmie A. (Peggie) Sellers SMSGT (E-8_ USAF (Retired) of Sumter and Patricia (Lewis) Hudley of Patrick; grandchildren, Lt. Commander Wanda Sellers U.S. Navy of Hampton, Va., Katrina Hudley of Cary, N.C., Derek Hudley of Cheraw, Amy Sellers of Hampton, Va., Demetra and Johnathan Hudley of Patrick and Jessica Sellers of Sumter; three great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Jr., Jordyn and Xachary Hudley all of Patrick; two aunts, Odessa Jackson of Cheraw and Queen Esther Tate of Patrick; and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Willie Cloud, 64
GREAT FALLS - The funeral for Mr. Willie Cloud of 2539 Cloud Road was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 at First Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Paul Hicklin and the Rev. Cookie Washington officiated, the Rev. William Perry and the Rev. William M. Hayes assisted and the Rev. Edward Jeter delivered the eulogy. Burial followed in Fairview A.M.E. Zion Church cemetery.
Mr. Cloud, 64, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at his home.
born Sept. 9, 1940, he was a son of the late Willie Harold and Mary McCullough Cloud. A 1958 graduate of Elizabeth Heights High School, Mr. Cloud attended junior college in Rock Hill and was employed with J.P. Stevens. He retired from Duke Power and was a member of Fairview A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as steward and as a member of the Lay Council. Mr. Cloud was also a member of the Fraternal Union Lodge No. 136, where he once served as worshipful master, and was patron of the Order of Eastern Stars No. 118. He belonged to the NAACP, the Elizabeth Heights Reunion Committee and the Georgetown Community Committee. Mr. Cloud also served in the U.S. Army and was a staff supervisor with Washington Funeral Home for over 30 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Medina Cloud of Great Falls; three grandsons; a granddaughter; a brother, James Cloud and his wife, Mary, of Great Falls; and a sister, the Honorable Judge Ethel Wright and her husband, Denver, of St. Matthews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Barber Cloud; three daughters, Melecia Cloud Kennedy, Juana and Baby Girl Cloud; and a sister, Mary C. Funderburk.

Thomas Keith “Tommy” Rivers
CHESTERFIELD – Mr. Thomas Keith “Tommy” Rivers, 60, died Jan. 17, 2009.
Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Jan. 20, at Zoar United Methodist Church cemetery.
Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Jan. 19, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mr. Rivers was born Nov. 9, 1948 a son of Lou Ella Mauldin Rivers and the late John S. Rivers, Sr. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and attended Florence-Darlington Tec. Mr. Rivers was a retired truck driver and a former employee of Ina USA and Delta Mills. Tommy was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church, Chesterfield Masonic Lodge #220, and was a former member of the S.C. National Guard.
He was also preceded in death by his sister Mary White.
Surviving is a son, Thomas Keith (Joni) Rivers, Jr. of Ruby; his mother, Lou Ella Rivers of Chesterfield; a brother, John S. (Barbara) Rivers, Jr. of Rock Hill; five grandchildren, Dakota, Taylor, Savannah, Riley, and Katlin Rivers; and other relatives and friends.

Dorothy Lee McLain Shaw
PATRICK – Mrs. Dorothy Lee McLain Shaw, 80, died Jan. 19, 2009.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Jan. 21, at St. John Free Will Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Jan. 20, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Shaw was born May 21, 1928 a daughter of the late Mason Lee and Katie Aline Gulledge McLain. She was a retired employee of Bo-Buck Mills. Mrs. McLain was a lifelong member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener who loved her flowers, and she also enjoyed cooking.
Dorothy Lee was married
to the late Charles Leghette Shaw, and was also preceded in death by her three brothers, Lloyd, Conrad, and Curtis McLain.
Surviving are two sons, C. L. (Sherryl) Shaw of Cheraw and Tommy (Brenda) Shaw of Patrick; a daughter, Shelby (Tommy) Bailey of Patrick; an adopted daughter, Vickie (Randy) Vick of Patrick; four grandchildren, Randall (Debbie) Bailey of Chesterfield, Panda (Huey) Wallace and Missy (Michael) Hodge of Patrick, and Kyle (Melinda) Vick of Morven, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Gavin and Makayla Bailey; Briana and Karlie Hodge; and Isabella Vick.

Susie K. “Toon” Vaughn
MORVEN, N.C. – Miss Susie K. “Toon” Vaughn, 91, died Jan. 17, 2009.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Jan.19, at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Visitation was 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Miss Vaughn was born Sept. 4, 1917 a daughter of the late Evan “Duncan” and Rosa Adams Vaughn. She was a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Miss Vaughn was a lifelong member of Sandy Plains United Methodist Church. Susie loved sports, and was an avid Dodgers fan.
She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Lizzie Short, Bernice Griggs, and Geneva Short; her three brothers, J.B. William, and Sam Vaughn.
Surviving is Flossie Taylor Vaughn of Dunn, N.C., Griggs and J. W. (Donnie Faye) Griggs both of Morven, N.C., Carl (Frances) Griggs of Wadesboro, N.C., Bill (Beverly) Vaughn of Cheraw, and Tommy (Chris) Vaughn of Norwood, N.C.; Sue V. (Steve) Barbee of Richfield, N.C., and Kay V. (Dewayne) Holmes of Dunn, N.C.; also Louise Skipper of Chesterfield.

Nancy Guy Pearce
CHERAW – Nancy Guy Pearce, 82, died Dec. 21, 2008.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Nancy Guy Pearce will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 24, in Old Saint David’s Church in Cheraw. Officiating will be Dr. David Phillips. After the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Mike and Cookie Pearce, 2210 West Market Street Extension, Cheraw.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of one’s choice.
born June 12, 1926 she was the daughter of the late Walter Lee Guy, Sr. and Aletha Rivers Guy.
Mrs. Pearce was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Walter Pearce, Sr. and is survived by three sons, Frank Walter Pearce, Jr. (Lois) of Jacksonville, Fla., Lloyd Keith Pearce (Marie) of Cheraw, and George Michael Pearce (Cookie) of Cheraw; a brother, Lloyd Grady Guy of Moncks Corner; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
While rearing her family and residing in Cheraw, Mrs. Pearce was a member of the First Methodist Church. After retiring and moving to Columbia, she was an active member of Shandon Baptist Church.

Eva Lisenby Watts
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mrs. Eva Lisenby Watts, 63, died Jan. 12, 2009.
Funeral services were Jan 17, at 2 p.m. at Davidson Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield. Burial was held in the church cemetery
Mrs. Eva Lisenby Watts, daughter of the late B.J. and Louise Streater Lisenby was born Aug. 23, 1945. She was formerly of Chesterfield.
At an early age, Eva became a member of the Davidson Grove Baptist Church. She attended the Chesterfield County public school system. Eva retired from the Chesterfield County School system as head custodian at an elementary school.
Surviving is her husband, Willie Watts, Jr.; three sons, Anthony Joines, Monroe, N.C., Ricky Joines (Lisa), Pageland and Andrew Joines (Eunice), Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Josephine Ingram, Plainfield, N.J. and Geraldine Cole, Chesterfield; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Watts, Charlotte, N.C. and Brenda Diggs, Fayetteville, N.C.; an uncle, Jerry Bennett, Winston Salem, NC; an aunt, Dorothy Little, Wadesboro, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Arlie Myers.

Ruby Carlisle Hopkins
JEFFERSON – Mrs. Ruby Carlisle Hopkins, 80, died Jan. 13, 2009.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Jan. 15, at Twin Pines Free Will Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Jan. 14, at Twin Pines Free Will Baptist Church
Mrs. Hopkins was born Feb. 28, 1928 a daughter of the late Earl and Lucy Tillman Carlisle. She was a retired employee of Springs Industries. Mrs. Hopkins was a member of Twin Pines Free Will Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R. L. Hopkins.
Surviving is a son, R. L. (Darlene) Hopkins, Jr. of Jefferson; two grandchildren, Billy (Krystal) Hopkins and Amanda (Mike) Griffin both of Jefferson; three great-grandchildren, Heather and Jacob Bryant and MacKenzie.

James E. “Jamie” Pinkoski
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Mr. James E. “Jamie” Pinkoski, 54, died Jan. 10, 2009.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Jan. 15, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Pageland. Burial was held in the church cemetery.
Visitation was 3-4 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Pinkoski was a son of Jan Cohen and the late Al Pinkoski. He was a talented chef who enjoyed working in the seafood business. Mr. Pinkoski attended Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Surviving is a daughter, Jessica (James) Leaird of Pageland; his mother, Jan Cohen of Lady Lake, Fla.; six grandchildren, Mathew, Jacob, and Jedediah LaValley; Emily, Crystal, and Jacquiline Leaird; a brother, Daniel Pinkoski; two sisters, Claudia Mhekie and Alexis Pinkoski.
