Ethel L. Cofer

Mrs. Ethel L. Cofer, 67, of Seaborn Drive, entered into rest December 27, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Cofer, a native of Aiken County, was a member of Old Macedonia Baptist Church. She retired from Kroger as a cashier.

Survivors include a son, Cameron E. (Shaun) Cofer; a daughter, Karen M. (Walter) Harvey; her mother, Addie Tillman Quiller, all of North Augusta; a sister, Viola Quiller Dulin, Buffalo, N.Y.; two aunts, Rosa Lee Blaylock and Irene (Arthur) Abraham; a devoted cousin, Mary Ethel Moore; sisters-in-law, Alice Washington, Rosa Cofer, and Emma Philpot, North Augusta; six grandchildren; ten step great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel L. Quiller Cofer were held 11 a.m. Friday, January 2, 2008 at Old Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Limuer Myers officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Robert Talley Jr.

BURLINGTON — Robert Talley Jr., 59, died Jan. 8, 2012, at Hospice of Burlington, N.C., after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, with interment following in Foundry Hill cemetery.

Mr. Talley was employed by Zaxby’s in Burlington, N.C. He was greatly loved by all who knew him.

Surviving are two sons, Kenny Wingate of Cheraw, and Robby Smith of Burlington; mother and father, Robert and Lucy Mae Talley; two brothers, Tony (Hattie) Talley of Chesterfield, and Samuel Talley of Cheraw; four sisters, Betty J. Lowery, Mary (Cye) Bennett, Vanessa Talley, and Sandra D. Talley of Cheraw, also numerous other relatives.

Grooms Funeral Home served the Talley family.

Ray Wilson Howard

MT. CROGHAN — Ray Wilson Howard, 75, died March 8, 2012.

The family held visitation March 10, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield.

Mr. Howard was born Sept. 30, 1936, in Pageland, a son of the late Herman and Wincie McRae Howard. He was a retired electrician. Ray enjoyed auctions, fishing, and riding in his truck.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Pearline P. Howard, and his sister, Emma Jean Owens.

Surviving are three sons, Ricky Howard of Henderson, N.C., Dannie (Penny) Howard of Louisburg, N.C., and Warren J. Howard and his fiancée, Marie Varner of Henderson, N.C.; three daughters, Sheila (Thurston) Faulkner of Youngsville, N.C., Norma Jean Howard of Jefferson, and Debbie Howard (Mark) Currin of Durham, N.C.; 13 Grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; three brothers, Alton Howard of Henderson, Marshall Howard of Virginia, and Benny Howard of Rock Hill, S.C.

Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home served the Howard Family.

Chase Ayden Solomon

Chase Ayden Solomon, infant son of Joshua and Malerie Solomon, of Ridge Spring, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009.

A graveside service was held Saturday, March 21, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Chris Yeargin officiated.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Donald 'Sambo' and Carla Trotter of Leesville, Milton and Deborah Rodgers of Edgefield; paternal grandparents, David and Debbie Solomon of Marston, N.C., Doyle and Linda Markham of Vass, N.C.; aunts, Kaylan Rodgers of Edgefield, Maranda Markham of Vass; uncles, Blake Rodgers of Leesville, Donnie Trotter of Leesville, Eric Rodgers of Edgefield; great-grandparents: paternal, Harold and Faye Rodgers of Ridge Spring, Richard Carl Padgett Sr. and Margaret Padgett of Ridge Spring; maternal, Fannie Mae Solomon of Southern Pines, N.C., Alfred and Shirley Snyder of Pine Grove, Pa.; and numerous great-aunts, uncles and cousins from South Carolina and North Carolina.

Milton-Shealy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jesse Roberts, 83

ROCK HILL - The funeral for Mr. Jesse Roberts of 2935 Saluda Road will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at Armenia Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Irby will officiate, the Rev. Dr. Albert P. Rowe will deliver the eulogy and the Rev. J.D. McClurkin will assist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Roberts, 83, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.

born in Sutherland, Va. on Oct. 16, 1921, he was a son of the late John Roberts and Mamie Bland Roberts. A member of Calvary Baptist Church in Patterson, N.J., where he served on the Calvary Community Center Board and the Senior Missionary Society, Mr. Roberts was past worshipful master of St. Paul Masonic Lodge No. 6 in Hackensack, N.J. He was a former member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church in Sutherland, Va. and was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Roberts was a self-employed asphalt contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Louise McClurkin Roberts; a stepsister, Vinie Hamilton of Jamaica, N.Y.; an uncle, Benjamin Bland and his wife, Corine, of Washington Township; an aunt, Vernell Barnett of Hackensack, N.J.; a goddaughter, Monica Stith of Hackensack; and a godson, James Brown Jr. of Owing Mills, Md.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2935 Saluda Road, Rock Hill.

Viewing will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St., Chester.

King's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brenda Miller Bunch

Mrs. Brenda Miller Bunch, 54, wife of Mr. Paul H. Bunch, Jr., of Old Martintown Rd., entered into rest Thursday, January 1, 2009 at University hospital.

Her funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Sweetwater Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Noe and Dr. Eleazer Benenhaley officiating. Interment will be in the Sweetwater Baptist cemetery.

Mrs. Bunch was a member at Sweetwater Baptist Church where she kept the nursery for over thirty years and was also involved in many other church activities.

Additional survivors include a son, David A. Bunch (Michelle) of North Augusta; her parents, Edna H and G. Francis Miller of Edgefield; a sister, Barbara M. Zang (David) of North Augusta and one grandchild, MaryAnn Bunch. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Dianne Bunch. Pallbearers will be Chic Morris, Tim Presnell, Tim Drew, Michael Miller, Larry Miller and Henry Reese.

The family will be at the home of Barbara M. Zang, 25 Rapids Ct., North Augusta. Memorials may be made to the Sweetwater Baptist Church Building Fund 198 Sweetwater Rd., North Augusta, SC 29860. Rowland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Isabel Wright

Mrs. Isabel Wright, of Batesburg, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Mattie C. Hall Nursing Center in Aiken.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at Jerusalem United Church of Christ in Boydton, Va.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret (Sylvester) Holmes, Batesburg; two grandsons, Glenn Holmes and Gary Holmes; and a sister, Daisy Allen.

Davis Funeral Home Inc., Ridge Spring, was in charge of arrangements.

David James Worsham

David James Worsham, of North Augusta, infant son of Michael and Crystal Sills Worsham, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009 at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

A graveside service was held Sunday, Jan. 4, at 2:30 p.m. in the Moore cemetery in Bickley Community of Ware County.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Linda Faye Sills, Waycross; his paternal grandparents, Thomas Branch Worsham and Mary Jane Timms Worsham, Edgefield; his maternal great-grandmother, Linda Darlene Sills, Waycross, Ga.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfather, Wybern Cleo Sills.

Music Funeral Home, Waycross, was in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Thomas Quarles

Mrs. Elsie Thomas Quarles, 76, of Edgefield, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at Edgefield County Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at Living Word Fellowship in Trenton. Burial will be at a later date.

Mrs. Quarles was born in Edgefield County and was a member of Living Word Fellowship. She was a retired sales clerk.

Survivors include two sons, P. Marion Quarles Jr. and Michael T. Quarles, both of Edgefield; two grandchildren, Jonathan Quarles and Jonah Quarles; a brother, Edsel Thomas, Johnston.

Memorials may be made to Living Word Fellowship Building Fund, P.O. Box 65, Edgefield, SC 29824.

Joyce Smothers

POLKTON, N.C. — Joyce Smothers, 54, died March 3, 2012, at her home .

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on March 8 at Harmony Community Church, in Peachland, N.C., with burial in the church cemetery. The family will hold visitation March 6 from 6 to 8 p.m., at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield.

Miss Smothers was born Sept. 6, 1957, in Mt. Croghan, a daughter of the late George Washington and Mary Lee Jenkins Smothers. She was a former textile employee and a member of Harmony Community Church. Joyce loved and enjoyed riding her horses, she loved her puppies, and being outdoors. She also loved and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving are three brothers, Thomas (Birdie) Smothers of Pineville, NC, Jim Smothers of Fort Mill, S.C., and Lindsey (Marie) Smothers of Lilesville, N.C.; three sisters, Mary (Ralph) Tarlton of Marshville, N.C., Margaret Heavener of Lincolnton, N.C., and Brenda Benton of the home also a number of nieces and nephews.

Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield is serving the Smothers family.

Mrs. Martha Childers Nichols, 55

CHESTER - Graveside services for Mrs. Martha Childers Nichols of 99 Deaver St. were conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 in Lockhart cemetery with the Rev. Frank Cantrell officiating.

Mrs. Nichols, 55, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.

born in Union County on Aug. 31, 1949, she was a daughter of Vernon L. Childers of Union and the late Helen McSwain Childers. She was a former member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Melinda Ann Childers of Union and Mary C. Lanier of Lockhart; a brother, Tommy Childers of Union; three nephews; and two special caregivers, Doris Beam and Patti Stewart.

She was predeceased by her husband, Grady Henry Nichols.

S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 West South St., Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Damien Torrell Padgett

Funeral services for Mr. Damien Torrell Padgett, of Aiken, were held Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Alpha Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eldwin Griffin, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his father, Cleveland Padgett Jr., Loretta Padgett; a fiancé, Darlisha Seaward; two sons, Darnell McManus and Damien Padgett Jr.; three daughters, Kiaonna Padgett, Angel Padgett and Shaniya Adams; brothers, Marcus Grim and Cleveland Padgett III; a sister, Lameaka Padgett; and other relatives.

Amos & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Virgil Brady Brunson

Mrs. Virgil Brady Brunson, 83, of Edgefield, died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Edgefield County Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 5, at 3 p.m. at Edgefield First Baptist Church, with burial in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Brunson was a native of Edgefield County and was a member of Edgefield First Baptist Church. She was a lifelong Sunday School teacher and a homemaker. She was a member of the D.A.R. and the Les Dames Des Fleurs Garden Club.

Survivors include five children, George Randolph Speight Jr., Charlie Harvey Speight II, Samuel Brady Speight, Thomas Daniel (Todd) Brunson and Charlotte Ann Seawright; three stepchildren, Gerry Brunson, Harold (Bill) Brunson, Ed Brunson; a sister and best friend, Beth Brady Feagle; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; a nephew, Joe Brice Feagle III.

Memorials may be made to Edgefield First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 624, Edgefield, SC 29824.

Charles Gary ''Sonny'' Benfield Sr.

Mr. Charles Gary ''Sonny'' Benfield Sr., 68, of Edgefield, died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Edgefield County Hospital.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 14, at 1 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church cemetery, 2260 Chester Hwy., York, SC 29745.

Mr. Benfield was born to the late Preston M. and Mary Merritt Benfield on June 26, 1940. He retired from the Edgefield County School District and served on the Edgefield Town Council for five years. During his retirement, he enjoyed carpentry, fishing and his 'morning coffee club.'

He was known for his charismatic personality, determination and love of life.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathy Peeler Benfield; two sons, Justin and his wife Erin of Greenville and Gary Jr. and fiancée Angie of North Augusta; granddaughters Madison Benfield of Greenville and Amaya Emmons of North Augusta; stepson David Satcher and wife Michelle; stepdaughter Lisa Satcher Smith and husband Bill; sister Fran Powell and husband Larry of Irmo.

Memorials may be made to the church.
