WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mr. Russell Burnham Hawes Sr., 79, formerly of Nashua, N.H., died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center.
born in Arlington, Mass. on April 15, 1924, he was a son of Newell Hubbard Hawes and Helen Lytle Hawes. Upon graduation from Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, Mass., Mr. Hawes was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and after that Harvard University. During this time he was employed as an electronics technician with Raytheon Corp. in Waltham, Mass. and with Cruft Laboratory at Harvard University. Mr. Hawes interrupted his education to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a corporal from 1943-1946 in the Pacific Theater as a radar technician. After World War II, Mr. Hawes graduated from MIT in 1949 with a bachelor of science in physics.
He was employed by Sperry Gyroscope Company in Great Neck, N.Y., where he was the group leader of systems for the Sparrow I missile development project. His duties included the design and development of the guidance systems and various electronic components for a series of test missiles. Also included was the design and development of electronic launching equipment for ground launching of the missiles. During this time, Mr. Hawes also worked at Point Mugu, Calif. as well, where he supervised the launching of the concluding series of test missiles, including conducting the on-pad pre-flight checkouts for the first guided Sparrow I missile.
Mr. Hawes also worked as a senior systems engineer in the electronics division of the American Machine and Foundry Company in Boston, where he worked on the development of the range-tracking sytems for the Terrier missile as well as the automatic distress alarm unit for the Air Force Rescue Network. He was also employed as section head for systems at Sanders Associates in Nashua, N.H., where he was involved in the development of a stability augmentation system (autopilot) for the F106 aircraft and the APN-77 doppler hovering device for the Bureau of Aeronautics. He was issued a number of patents in the fields of missile guidance systems and electronic components.
Mr. Hawes played hockey with the Piedmont Hockey Association in Winston-Salem for the past 25 years and was also a coach of little league hockey in the Winston-Salem Amateur Hockey Association. He participated in the over-75 Charles Schulz Senior World Hockey Tournament in Santa Rosa, Calif. three different times.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Constance Clough Hawes; a son, Russell Burnham Hawes Jr. and his wife, Meg, of Chester; and two grandchildren.

HICKORY GROVE -- Peggy Lee Pack Curcio, 70, of Smithwoods Lane, died April 5, 2008, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral was held April 12, at Bratton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Curcio is survived by her husband, Gilbert "Bert" Curcio Jr.
She was a member of Catholic Presbyterian Church and a retired nurse.

YORK -- James Franklin Glenn, 74, of S. Congress Street, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at White Oak Manor.
The funeral was held April 11, at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church. Burial followed at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

CLOVER -- Evelyn Wright Wray, 76, of McConnells Street, died April 9, 2008, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Mrs. Memphis Darby Dye, 83
CHESTER - The funeral for Mrs. Memphis Darby Dye, 83, of 3666 Pinckney Road, will be conducted at noon, Saturday, June 12 at Zion Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Washington will officiate, and will be assisted by the Rev. Columbus Pendergrass Jr. and the Rev. Servilla M. Feaster. Burial will follow at Barber Memorial cemetery in Rock Hill.
Mrs. Dye died Tuesday, June 8 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
born in Chester County Nov. 3, 1920, Mrs. Dye was the daughter of the late Monroe Darby and Eutrie Sanders Darby. She was a member of Zion Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, Bright Light Chapter No. 146 Order of the Eastern Star.
She attended Chester County public schools. She was the widow of the late James Robert Dye. One son, John Robert Dye, preceded her in death.
Survivors are three sons; Rufus (Helen) Dye of Bossier City, La., Paul Dye, of Chester, and Leslie Dye of Charlotte; one daughter, Terry D. (John) Massey, of Chester; two brothers, Sumpter Darby and Rufus Dye, both of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Lessie Davis, of Washington, D.C. and Bessie T. Darby of Greensboro, N.C.; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Frances (Chris) Nesbit of Charlotte and Helen (Ralph) McKenzie of Joliet Ill.
The family will receive friends at the residence. Eastern Star rites will be performed on Friday, 7 p.m. at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Mittie Angelia 'Ann' Taylor, 66
CHESTER - A memorial service for Mrs. Mittie Angelia "Ann" Taylor of 100 Culp St., Apartment E5, Chester, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Orr's Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Marshall officiating. The family will begin receiving friends at 2 p.m. at the church on the day of the service.
Mrs. Taylor, 66, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.
born in Chester County on Oct. 2, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Noah Kirkland and the late Sarah Eula Langford. Mrs. Taylor was a retired seamstress.
Survivors include a brother, James M. Kirkland of Chester; a nephew, Dan Kirkland of Chester; a niece, Wanda Patrick of Chester; and a dear friend and sister in Christ, Shirley Walker, of Chester.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Orr's Baptist Church Building Fund, 1266 Lancaster Highway, Chester.

Miss Sunny Nicole Conner, 18
FORT LAWN - The funeral for Miss Sunny Nicole Conner, 18, of 4458 Lazy "H" Road, Fort Lawn, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barron Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Lando cemetery.
Conner died Thursday, June 10 in an automobile accident.
born in Rock Hill on Nov. 28, 1985, Miss Conner was the daughter of Billy Jordan and Beverly (Conner) Dosier.
Miss Conner was a 2004 graduate of Lewisville High School, where she served on student council. She was a member of Westerly Baptist Church, Fort Mill.
She is survived by her father, Billy; her mother and step-father, Doug and Beverly Dosier of Fort Lawn; two brothers, Corey and Brandon Conner, both of Fort Lawn; a maternal grandmother, Betty Conner of Fort Lawn; a paternal grandfather, William A. Jordan of Rock Hill; one half-sister, Linda Jordan, of Catawba, and her fiance', Kevin Threatt of Fort Lawn.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Sonny and Angie Conner, 2007 Chestnut Lane, Edgemoor, and at the home of Doug and Beverly Dosier, 4458 Lazy "H" Road, Fort Lawn.

Mrs. Thelma Gray Cowart, 87
GREAT FALLS - The funeral for Mrs. Thelma Gray Cowart of 221 St. Michael Ave. will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 at First Baptist Church of Great Falls. The Rev. Dr. Aubrey B. Floyd, the Rev. Tracy Ivester and the Rev. John Paul Sellers will officiate and burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery.
Mrs. Cowart, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at her residence.
born in Great Falls on July 30, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Zebulon V. Gray and Laura Viola Evans Gray. A member of First Baptist Church of Great Falls, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years, Mrs. Cowart graduated from Great Falls High School and was retired from J.P. Stevens Company. Mrs. Cowart also served as the site director at the Great Falls Senior Citizens Building.
Survivors include three sons, Henry Cowart Jr. of St. Louis, Mo., Richard Cowart of Concord and Steve Cowart of Columbia; five grandchildren; two brothers, Z.V. Gray of Dothan, Ala. and Richard Gray of Greenwood, S.C.; and a sister, Norma Broom of Great Falls.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry H. Cowart Sr.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight, Friday, at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, 26 Underwood Ave., Great Falls.

Miss Sarah B. Curbeam, 58
FAIRFIELD - The funeral for Miss Sarah B. Curbeam of 547 Leslie St., Chester, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Fairfield County. The Rev. Moses Lightner will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Miss Curbeam, 58, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.
born in Fairfield County on July 26, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Curbeam and Julie Rabb Curbeam. A member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she sang with the choir, Miss Curbeam attended the public schools of Fairfield County and was a former employee of Springs Industries.
Survivors include three sons, Anthony Curbeam, Curtis Curbeam and Chris Curbeam, all of Chester; a daughter, Stephanie Y. Curbeam of Chester; two brothers, Joe Curbeam and James Curbeam and his wife, Elizabeth, all of Baltimore; three sisters, Rebecca Ray and her husband, Robert, and Tommie Lee Jones, all of Baltimore, and Willie Mae Anderson of West Virginia; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four brothers.
The family will receive friends at the home, 547 Leslie St.
The body may be viewed today, Friday, from 3-9 p.m. at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St., Chester. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Richard Gaston Elkins, 49
CATAWBA - Graveside services for Mr. Richard Gaston Elkins of 360 Dot Faris Road will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 in Grandview Memorial Park Garden of the Cross with Pastor Jerry M. Broughton officiating.
Mr. Elkins, 49, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the home of his daughter.
born in Rock Hill, he was a son of the late Leonard Gaston Elkins and Ann "Tootsie" Railey Elkins Blanks. A self-employed carpet and vinyl installer, Mr. Elkins was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his daughter, Kelly Elkins of York; a sister, Terry Varnadore of Great Falls; and one grandchild.
Visitation will be tonight, Friday, from 7-9 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, and at other time at the home of his daughter, Kelly Elkins, at 825 Tirzah Road, York.

Dr. Douglas B. Hughes Sr., 86
ROCK HILL - The funeral for Dr. Douglas B. Hughes Sr. was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12 at First Baptist Church of Rock Hill. The Rev. Steve Hogg and Dr. Larry Sizemore officiated and burial followed in Laurelwood cemetery.
Dr. Hughes, 86, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.
born in Fountain Inn, S.C. on Feb. 28, 1918, he was a son of the late John and Mae Hughes. He graduated high school in Fountain Inn and entered Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Upon his graduation in 1939, Dr. Hughes began his chiropractic practice in Rock Hill and in 1942 was drafted into the Army during World War II. During his time in the Army, Dr. Hughes served on one of the largest hospital ships, where he worked in the X-ray department.
Upon release from the Army, he returned to Rock Hill to continue his chiropractic practice. Dr. Hughes earned the reputation of treating more generations of chiropractic patients in the York County area than any other chiropractor in the history of chiropractic, as he practiced in Rock Hill for over 65 years. Dr. Hughes's son, who has been a chiropractor since 1997, sees patients in Chester and his grandson is set to graduate from Palmer College of Chiropractic in February 2005 with plans to practice in Rock Hill.
Dr. Hughes was an avid breeder of beagles and raised many field champions. He loved vegetable gardening as well as growing flowers and doing yard work. Active in the real estate business, Dr. Hughes often donated dogs to the Rock Hill Boys Home and taught many young boys how to hunt. A member of First Baptist Church, where he served as head of the ushers for many years, Dr. Hughes was also a former member of the Lions, Elks, VFW and American Legion. He was an active member of the International Chiropractic Association.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Iris Burnette Hughes; a son, Dr. Douglas B. Hughes Jr. and his wife, Wesley, of Rock Hill; three daughters, Jean Hughes of Avondale Estates, Ga., Carol Pearce and her husband, the late Jim Pearce, of Etowah, N.C. and Sandra Harmon and her husband, David, of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building By Faith, 215 East Main St., Rock Hill, S.C. 29730.

CHESTER - Graveside services for Mr. Robert Edgar Townsend Sr. of 1035 Sid Davis Road will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 in Chester Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Frank Wilder officiating.
Mr. Townsend, 50, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at his home.
A native of Baltimore, Md., he was a son of the late George and Betty Davis Townsend. He was employed as an engineer.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene P. Townsend; three sons, Robert "Bob" Townsend Jr. and Brian Townsend, both of Lancaster, and Jamie Billings of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Rachel Woolsey of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
