Mrs. Mary Stewart Bollinger, 81

CHESTER - The funeral for Mrs. Mary Violet Stewart Bollinger was conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 at Cauthen Funeral Home's Lancaster Chapel. The Rev. Curtis Cameron officiated and burial followed in Chester Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bollinger, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at White Oak Manor in Charleston.

born in Great Falls on March 18, 1923, she was a daughter of the late A.J. and LuMay Jacobs Stewart. A graduate of Chester High School, Mrs. Bollinger also graduated from Coronet Modeling School and had a professional portfolio including newspaper and magazine prints as well as original television ads for Burger King Corp. She represented the City of Miami in the Mrs. Florida Pageant in 1953 being named first runner-up and Mrs. Congeniality. In 1954, Mrs. Bollinger started the Charmette Modeling Academy and later opened two other schools. The academy is celebrating its golden anniversary this year, the current owner was taught and mentored by Mrs. Bollinger. In 1989, Mrs. Bollinger returned to Chalet des Fleurs in Pawleys Island, where she enjoyed her flower gardens and bird watching.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy McGuirt and her husband, Jim, of Houston, Texas and Jeanne Walker of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Fred O. Stewart Sr. of Chester; two sisters, Daisy Cole of Melbourne, Fla. and Joyce Luker of Lineville, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul M.F. Walker; and her second husband, Frank V. Bollinger.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202.

Cauthen Funeral Home's Lancaster Chapel, 410 West Meeting St., Lancaster, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bessie Pearl Land Massey

CHARLOTTE - The funeral for Mrs. Bessie Pearl Land Massey, originally of Chester, was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Charlotte. The Rev. John Glenn Gerald III, pastor, officiated and burial followed in York Memorial Park.

Mrs. Massey died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004.

Survivors include a daughter, Mildred Louise Massey of the home; a brother, Willie Land Jr. and his wife, Minnie, of Chester; two sisters, Mary Lewis and her husband, Calvin, and Eva Sarratt and her husband, Robert; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

King's Funeral Home of Charlotte was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Emma Jean Giles, 41

SHARON - The funeral for Miss Emma Jean Giles of Hampton St., Rock Hill, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon. The Rev. Raymond Davis will officiate, the Rev. Arthur Frazier will deliver the eulogy and the Rev. E.M. Browning and the Rev. F.R. Giles will assist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Miss Giles, 41, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004.

born in York County on Sept. 27, 1962, she was a daughter of Glenn Giles Jr. and the late Emma Ree Good Giles. A member of Crossroad Baptist Church, Miss Giles graduated from Chester High School in 1980 and attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry and short stories and loved children.

Survivors include her father, Glenn Giles Jr. of Sharon; four brothers, Clyde Good and his wife, Rachel, of Hickory Grove, Muhammad Fard of New York and Benjamin Giles and his wife, Cynthia, and Harry Giles and his wife, Melissa, all of Sharon; and three sisters, Janice Tolbert and her husband, Michael, of Rock Hill and Glennetta Avery and her husband, Michael, and Eudoria Giles of Charlotte.

She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Giles.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Viewing will be from 3-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St., Chester, and from 1:15 p.m. until the hour of service on Thursday at the church.

Infant Anthony Davis Vaughn, 1

BLACKSTOCK - The funeral for infant Anthony Davis Vaughn of 950 Hopewell Church Road will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at Saluda Street Church of God. The Rev. Gerald Funderburk will officiate and burial will follow in Chester Memorial Gardens.

Infant Vaughn, 1, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Chester Regional Medical Center.

born in Rock Hill on Sept. 26, 2003, he was a son of Michael Wayne Vaughn and Sherry Bynum Vaughn.

Survivors include his parents, Michael and Sherry Vaughn; a sister, Monica Vaughn of the home; his paternal grandparents, Edward and Doris Wilson of Chester; and his maternal grandparents, Winfred and Elaine Bynum of Blackstock.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Saluda Street Church of God social hall.

Miss Sarah Mae Jackson, 64

CHESTER - The funeral for Miss Sarah Mae Jackson of 605 Parkway Drive will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at Christian Home Baptist Church. The Rev. Wendell Cain will officiate, the Rev. Lloyd Reid will deliver the eulogy and the Rev. Daniel Chisholm will assist.

Miss Jackson, 64, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.

born in Chester County on Oct. 25, 1939, she was a daughter of Elizabeth Graham Jackson and the late Johnny Jackson Jr. A member of Christian Home Baptist Church, Miss Jackson attended school in Chester County and was a domestic worker.

Survivors include a son, Arthur Jackson of Chester; three daughters, Loretta Jackson, Barbara Jackson and Clevon Jackson, all of Chester; her mother, Elizabeth G. Jackson of Chester; a brother, Nathaniel Jackson of Chester; a sister, Annie Ruth Jackson of Chester; a godson; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Johnny Jackson Jr. and Lindsay Wade; and two sisters, Eliza J. Caldwell and Lizzie Ruth Kennedy.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Clevon Jackson, at 118 Bailey St., Chester.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 9 p.m. today, Friday, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St., Chester. The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Mr. Robert Cornwell McDaniel, 70

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Graveside services for Mr. Robert Cornwell McDaniel, formerly of Chester, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24 in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. David Sealy officiating.

Mr. McDaniel, 70, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in Little Rock.

born in Chester on Feb. 12, 1934, he was a son of the late Raymond McDaniel and Evelyn Cornwell McDaniel. A retired animal scientist with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Little Rock campus, Mr. McDaniel was also a retired livestock specialist with Cooperative Extension Service. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock for over 30 years and retired from the Army Reserves.

Survivors include his wife, Betty McDaniel; a stepdaughter, Dona Bailey of Little Rock; six brothers, Charlie C. McDaniel and his wife, Sylvia, of Mooresville, N.C., Roy McDaniel and Roger McDaniel, both of Carlisle, Harold McDaniel and his wife, Bette, of Kennesaw, Ga., George McDaniel of Tampa, Fla. and Walter McDaniel and his wife, Judi, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and two sisters, Margaret Hodge and her husband, Joel, of Sumter, S.C. and Frances Carns and her husband, Danny, of Chester.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 610 Calvary Church Road, Chester or to the American Cancer Society, 901 N. University, Little Rock, Ark. 72203.

Mrs. Grace Dudley Carroll, 89

CHESTER - Graveside services for Mrs. Grace Dudley Carroll, formerly of Chester, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 in Chester Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating.

Mrs. Carroll, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

born in Spearsville, La. on Dec. 30, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Varner Edward Dudley and Sarah Louise Henderson Dudley. A member of Chester First Baptist Church, where she formerly taught Sunday school, Mrs. Carroll graduated from high school in Spearsville, La. and also from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. A retired high school teacher, Mrs. Carroll taught in Sumter, Gaffney and Chester and was also a bookkeeper for Carroll Ford Dealership of Chester.

Survivors include a son, Allen Carroll and his wife, Pam, of Lilburn, Ga.; a daughter, Jean C. Holland of Camden; three sisters, Maude Kroenke of Columbia, Louise Lomax of Tulsa, Okla. and Lady Perrit of Arcadia, La.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. "Joe" Carroll.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie St., Chester.

Mrs. Gladys Gardner Barton, 86

CHESTER - Graveside services for Mrs. Gladys Gardner Barton of 616 Sanders St. will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Oct. 22 in Lancaster Memorial Park with the Rev. Dale Roddey officiating.

Mrs. Barton, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at her residence.

born in York County on Oct. 22, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Gardner and Rosa Alice Ogburn Gardner. A homemaker, Mrs. Barton was a graduate of York High School.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann B. Bell and her husband, Grady, of Chester and Marian B. Elliott and her husband, Wayne, of Charlottesville, Va.; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter M. Barton.

Mr. John Sidney Williams Jr., 46

CHESTER - The funeral for Mr. John Sidney Williams Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Chester, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Black Rock Baptist Church. The Rev. James Wilson will officiate and the Rev. Marvin Hughes will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams, 46, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in New Mexico.

born in Chester County on Sept. 10, 1958, he was a son of the late John Sidney Williams Sr. and Janie Bell Sanders Williams. A member of Black Rock Baptist Church, Mr. Williams graduated from Chester High School in 1976 and was employed with Quality Inn Suite in New Mexico. A high school football player, Mr. Williams was also a former truck driver, campus police officer and musician. He was an avid bass guitar player and was a U.S. Airforce veteran.

Survivors include his children, Rafael Rodriquez Hall and his wife, Audrey, of York, Jabbar Dawaine Hall of Rock Hill, Vagas Ray Mooring of Tempe, Ariz., and Lamar Darshay Williams, Bryonne Ashley Williams and Darnell Robert Williams, all of Socorro, N.M; two brothers, David B. Sanders and his wife, Jacqueline, of Charlotte and Michael Anthony Williams and his wife, Carolyn, of Chester; three sisters, Pamela S. Pettice and her husband, Hazel, of Charlotte and Stephanie W. Hall and her husband, Thomas, and Mary Phyllis Williams, all of Chester; a stepsister, Wanda Mitchell and her husband, Charles of Newark, N.J.; his stepmother, Geraldean Williams; his companion, Jo Mooring Williams; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Nizheni Lee Williams; and his grandparents, William and Mamie Sanders and Sidney and Parthenia Williams.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister, Mary P. Williams, at 636 Pineridge Road, Chester.

The body may be viewed today, Friday, from 3 to 9 p.m. at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St., Chester. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Elsie Sisco Walton, 87

CHESTER - Graveside services for Mrs. Elsie Sisco Walton of 2478 Pilgrim Road will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 8 in Walton Family cemetery.

Mr. Walton, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at her residence.

born in Passaic County, N.J. on Oct. 4, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Sisco and Anna Sisco. A homemaker, Mrs. Walton attended school in Butler, N.J.

Survivors include two sons, Ray Walton of Chester and Bill Walton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dora Sisco of Chester.

She was predeceased by her husband, William M. Walton.

Elizabeth D. Coleman

Elizabeth D. Coleman, 96 died December 24, 2008 at Saluda Nursing Center. Elizabeth Davis Coleman was the seventh child of fifteen children born to the late Rev. John and Alice (Campbell) Davis.

She was a member of the Mt. Alpha Baptist Church in Ward, S.C. and was active in church and civic activities through her life. She graduated in the top five percentile of all her educational insitutions and taught 37 years in the public school system.

Survivors: one son, Thaddeous Z. Coleman from Beaufort, S.C; two grandaughters, Karen James, Wellesby, Mass., Thia C Brown, Beaufort, S.C; six great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Joy and Jewel James of Wellesby, Mass., Tiffany and Caleb Brown, Beaufort, S.C., four sisters, Lola Dobson, Winston Salem, N.C. Vivian D. Bates, Fountain Inn, S.C., Mable D. Carter, Columbia, S.C., Tropzsy D Brewer, Decatur, Ga. Public viewing will be Sunday, December 28th, Davis Funeral Home, 1 p.m.

Family received friends at Davis Funeral Home from 6-7 p.m., Sunday, December 28th.

Services were held Monday, December 29, 2008 at 11 a.m., at Mt. Alpha Baptist Church, 142 West Front Street, Ward, S.C. Remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m., Rev. Eldwin Griffin, Pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Katherine 'Sarah' Pendergrass

CHESTER - The funeral for Mrs. Katherine "Sarah" Hughes Pendergrass of 3903 Woodrow W. Drive in the Wilksburg community will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Zion Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Washington will officiate, the Rev. W.W. Thompson will deliver the eulogy and the Rev. James Good, the Rev. Keith McCrorey, the Rev. Bobby Featherstone and J.D. McClurkin will assist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Pendergrass, 77, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union.

born in Chester County on March 16, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Columbus Hughes Sr. and Hattie Sims Hughes. A member of Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and Sunday school treasurer, Mrs. Pendergrass also served there as a member of the Usher Board and the A.P.&B.; Society No. 17. She attended school in Chester County and graduated from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill. Mrs. Pendergrass was a former employee of Chester Sportswear.

Survivors include her husband, Wilson Pendergrass; three sons, Robert Pendergrass of the home, Karl Pendergrass and his wife, Katherine, of Lockhart and Joe Pendergrass of Gastonia; a daughter, Patricia Gainey of Chester; three brothers, William Hughes and his wife, Jearlean, of Charlotte, H.B. Hughes and his wife, Alberta, of Brown Summit, N.C. and John Hughes and his wife, Annie Bell, of Chester; two sisters, Agnes Witcher of Lynchburg, Va. and Hattie Lee Glover and her husband, Ronald, of Chester; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Claude Edd, Pete, Jesse and his wife, Vergie, Columbus Jr. and his wife, Juanita, and Louis.

The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at King's Funeral Home, 135 cemetery St., Chester, and at other times at the residence, 3903 Woodrow W. Drive, Chester.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
