Marie Smith Bruchon
CLOVER -- Marie Smith Bruchon, 84, died Friday, March 21, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Barbara Booker in Belmont, N.C.
The funeral was March 24, 2008, at Divine Savior in York, S.C., with Father John Giuliani officiating. Entombment was in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, S.C.
Mrs. Bruchon was born in 1923 in Bronx, N.Y., to the late William Edwin Smith Jr. and Pearl Ida Vogel Smith. Marie moved to Staten Island and then to the Adirondack Mountains as a child. She did well in school and at all other tasks she set her mind to. At the age of 15, she met her future husband, Paul E. Bruchon.
After high school, Marie attended the New York School of Design, where she studied Costume Design, and she used her training to make coats, suits and other difficult garments. When World War II started she did office work for the War Department.
Marie and Paul loved to dance during the Swing Era. They were so good that others cleared the floor to watch them. Paul asked her where she would want to live when they got married
. After living in upstate N.Y., with cold winters and heavy snows, Marie recalled a trip they had made to Greenville, S.C. to visit his sister. Marie recalled the flowers blooming and she loved the South, so that was her choice. They raised six children in Greenville. She was a homemaker and her family was always the center of her life. Marie was a good example of the saying "behind every successful man is a good woman." She was instrumental in the success of her husband's first entrepreneurial venture, at which they both did very well.
In 1962, the family moved to Gastonia when Paul joined the partnership at Sherrill Industries of Dallas, N.C. As the children got older she took on leadership roles in her church, neighborhood, garden club and the Art Guild of Gaston County.
In the early 1970's, she had time to express her artistic abilities. She began painting with oils and then started taking art classes at Gaston College, focusing on ceramics, sculpture, metal work and jewelry making. She enjoyed designing and making jewelry, which led her to becoming a silver- and goldsmith. In the mid 70's, she became an Oblate of the Benedictine Order.
In the early 1980's, she and Paul moved to Clover, S.C., where she enjoyed exploring the natural surroundings. She gathered and cooked mushrooms and canned the vegetables Paul grew. Both loved to sit watching wildlife in and around their pond.
Marie loved to read; she could discuss many subjects. She enjoyed singing in the choir and attending women's meetings at church.
Marie will always be remembered by her family for being a devoted, loving and giving person.
Special thanks and honor to her son, Paul E. Bruchon Jr. and daughter, Barbara Booker for the loving and continuous care they provided for our parents during their declining health for the past six years.
She is preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Paul E. Bruchon, 2006 and a grandson, John Quinn Jr., 1998.
