Lucille Dover
CLOVER -- Lucille Ethel Evans Dover, 86, formerly of Clover, S.C., died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in Rock Hill, S.C.
Mrs. Dover was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Gaston County, N.C., to the late Oliver Thomas and Liddia Arrowood Evans. She was the widow of Leslie Howard Dover.
A graveside service was April 9, 2008, at Lakeview Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Harry Bryant officiating.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Howard J. "Sonnie" and Eddie Dover of Rock Hill, S.C.; Donald L. and Alice Dover, also of Rock Hill; and Jerry L. and Darlene Dover of Gastonia, N.C.; two sisters, Emma Lee Ballew of Hobbs, N.M. and Viola E. Powell of Gastonia, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Paul Gourley
SHARON -- Paul Stuart Gourley, 30, of 4198 Ramsey Road died Friday, April 4, 2008.
The funeral was April 7 at Sharon ARP Church. The Rev. Tom Sherer and the Rev. Mike Goodwin officiated. Burial was at Sharon ARP Church cemetery.
A native of Sharon, Paul was a son of Jay Gourley and Nancy Childers Gourley. He graduated from Johnson and Wales University and was a chef. He had obtained the rank of Eagle Scout with Sharon Boy Scout Troop 137 in Sharon, S.C.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Jay and Brenda Gourley, of Sharon; his mother, Nancy Gourley of Sharon; his brother, David and his wife, Penny and their son, Elias Samuel Gourley of York, S.C.; his sister, Mary Gourley of Las Cruces, N.M.; his stepsister, Lexi Williams of Sharon; and maternal grandfather, Floyd Childers of Hickory Grove, S.C.

Mary Stanton
CLOVER -- Mrs. Mary Helen Withers Stanton passed away at her home on St. Paul Church Road, April 3, 2008.
A celebration of her life was conducted by Rev. David Inman at St. Paul United Methodist Church, on Saturday, April 5, 2008. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers for the funeral were her grandsons, Mike Adams, Bob Bowman, Josh Boyd, Travis Boyd, Brian Stanton, Matt Stanton, Stan Stanton, Stevie Stanton, Stuart Stanton, and Tommy Stanton.
born in Saxapahaw, N.C., on June 28, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Jane Murphy and Miles Luther Withers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51years, Thomas William Stanton; two sisters, Hazel Lee Withers and Ida Mae Withers Parrish; and a brother, James Franklin Withers.
Affectionately known as "Maw, " she was a member and former lay speaker of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Maw reared her children and grandchildren by providing them with her loving care and endearing support. She shared her morals and wisdom with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was proud of each of them.
She possessed an unconditional love for family and friends and leaves them with a plethora of life lessons and cliché s, most notably her "subtle hints."
She loved family outings, gardening, traveling, card games, and people. She was a unique and special mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, sister, teacher, and friend. After raising her children, helping her husband on their small dairy farm, and working in textiles and in business, Maw enrolled at Winthrop College when she was fifty-five, earning a master's degree in 1976. She then taught school for twelve years and retired at the age of seventy-two.
Robert "Bob" Pully
CLOVER -- Robert "Bob" Marshall Pully, 92, formerly of Lawson Lakes Drive, Clover, S.C., died peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, S.C.
born on March 19, 1916, in Clarkton, Va., Mr. Pully was the son of the late George Edward and Alice Marshall Pully. One of 10 children, he was raised on a farm in Bethel Hill, N.C. Entering college during the Depression, he worked his way through and graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College, S.C., and also North Carolina State University in 1939 with a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering. Later on, he graduated from the AMA Academy in Saranac Lake, N.Y.
As a World War II veteran, Mr. Pully served for five years in the United States Army. Serving as a captain for three years, he was in command of the Ordinance Heavy Auto Maintenance companies in the South Pacific Theater, stationed on the Hawaiian, Marshall, Guam, Kwajalein and Iwo Jima Islands. Receiving two Bronze Stars and four medals, he was honorably discharged in 1945.
After serving in the military, Mr. Pully pursued the advancement of the textile industry in North and South Carolina for over 40 years. He worked in various superintendent positions before becoming general manager of the American Thread Company in Clover. In 1965, he served as the director of Research and Development at Jenkins Metal Corp. in Gastonia, N.C., and also served as a managerial consultant. He later owned and managed his own yarn company, R.M. Pully Company, Inc., Clover.
As an active member of First United Methodist Church, he was known to many as "Mr. Bob." He served for many years as lay member to the S.C. Methodist Annual Conference and was a member of the Men's Bible class. He was past chairman and a member emeritus of the Administrative Council of Stewards.
Mr. Pully's most rewarding civic achievement was serving as a charter board member of the York County Commission for Technical Education in Rock Hill, S.C. As an advocate for higher education and to represent the people of western York County, he was commissioned by Governor Ernest Hollings in 1962 to help establish technical education in York County. He served as past president and board member of the Clover Chamber of Commerce as well as an active member of the Clover Lions Club.
Mr. Pully is remembered for his heart-warming personality and his love of life. He was rarely found without a smile on his face. His compassion for helping others and generosity were seen in his daily life. Faith and family were most important to him. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and vegetable gardening, which he referred to as his therapy. Many happy memories were created with his children and grandchildren at their family lake home.
Mr. Pully is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Correll Pully, having married
in Cheyenne, Wyo. in 1942; two daughters, Vivian "Vicki" Pully Cooke of Rock Hill and Brenda Pully Dean and husband, Earl, of Columbia; four grandchildren, Cortney Cooke, Cary Cooke and wife, Kimberly, Lauren Cooke and Jennifer Dean; and one brother, Thomas M. Humphries of Roxboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George E. Pully, William H. Pully and W.B. Humphries; and his sisters, Edith W. Pully, Katherine P. Bowles, Louise H. Cottingham, Alice H. West and Carol Leigh Humphries.
The worship service in celebration of Mr. Pully's life was held May 10 at First United Methodist Church in Clover, conducted by the Rev. Michael Walker. Interment was at Woodside cemetery in Clover.

Joseph L. Caldwell
CLOVER -- Joseph L. Caldwell, 90, of 1087 Ridge Road, Clover, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at home.
Mr. Caldwell was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Gaston County, N.C., to the late Robbie Riddle and Edward Newton Caldwell. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and served in India from 1942 to 1945.
A funeral service was held May 6, 2008, at Bowling Green Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James Gable and the Rev. Harold Hutchison officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy B. Caldwell; daughter, Joanne Caldwell Jackson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph Patrick and Diane Caldwell and Robbie Riddle and Marti Caldwell; sister, Betty Taylor of Gastonia, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

CLOVER -- Laura "Peggy" Petty Wilson, 80, of 1025 Lawrence Road, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Pineville Rehab & Living Center, Pineville, N.C.

Mrs. Wilson was born June 25, 1927, to the late Mott Quinn and Johnsie Dulin Petty. She was a graduate of Winthrop University and completed additional studies at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ben William Wilson.
Survivors are her three sons and three daughters and their spouses: Dr. Ben William Wilson and Dorothy Wilson of Clio, S.C.; Jane Wilson Stein and Stephen M. Billy Joe Howell
HICKORY GROVE -- Billy Joe Howell, 66, of 2061 Scenic View Road, died Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney.
The funeral was April 21, 2008, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Hyder and the Rev. Carl Howell officiated. Burial was at Hickory Grove cemetery.
A native of Hickory Grove, Billy was a son of the late William Howell and Wilma Bratton Howell. He was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by five sisters, Sarah Burgess of Hickory Grove, Emily Brown of York, Blanche Smith of York, Judy Bolin of Clover, Minnie Whitesides of York; two brothers, Walter Howell of Hickory Grove and Bob Howell of Chester; 19 nieces and nephews; and 39 great-nieces and nephews.

Ned Rogers
CLOVER -- Ned Rogers, 85, of 208 Jackson Terrace, died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, N.C.
Mr. Rogers was born April 16, 1922, in Lackawanna, N.Y., to the late Eli and Anna Drazich Radjenovich. He graduated from Lackawanna High School and was a Class of 1949 graduate of the University of Buffalo in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Rogers was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the Carrier Bunker Hill in the Pacific Fleet. He retired from IBM in 1982 and was professor of Calculus at Elmira College from 1982 to 1984.
Survivors are his wife, Helen Rogers of the home; daughter, Gayle R. Mullen of Corning, N.Y.; sons, Mark Rogers of Buffalo, N.Y., Don Rogers of Clover, S.C., and Gary Rogers of Australia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

William Whitesides Sr.
CLOVER -- William Clark Whitesides Sr., 90, of 3731 Woodstream Road, York, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, N.C.
Mr. Whitesides was born Nov. 7, 1917, in York County, S.C., to the late Raymond Thomas Whitesides and Finley Clark Whitesides Saine. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Mr. Whitesides worked for Holsum Baking Co. for 35 years and retired from MTS of Clover, S.C. His retirement years were spent farming, raising cattle and running errands for his wife, children and grandchildren.
Funeral service was April 18, 2008, at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Bryant and the Rev. Harry Bryant officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Memory Gardens.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ila Ruppe Whitesides of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Jerry Holliday of Clover; sons and daughters-in-law, William C. Jr. and Peggy Whitesides of Clover, Larry and Anna Whitesides of Clover and Kenneth and Wanda Whitesides of Clover; brother, Joseph Roy Whitesides of Gastonia, N.C.
