Debra K. Spets, 45, of 789 Philippi Church Road, formerly of Spokane, Wash., died Sunday, March 15, 2004 at White Oak Manor in Tryon. Mrs. Spets was born in Spokane Oct. 12, 1958, and later moved to Union where she made her home. She was a life long homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a brother, Keith Haney of Spokane and a very special friend and care giver, Rosanna Martin of Union. Memorial services will be held at a later date. The Lewis Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Josephine J. Gray
Homemaker

Josephine Johnson Gray, 66, of 176 Mandy Lane, widow of Colie Gray Jr. , died at her home Friday, March 14, 2003. Mrs. Gray was born in Union County on March 17, 1936, a daughter of the late Eddie and Zenobia Thompson Johnson. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are four sons, Colie (Dorothy) Gray, Robert (Patricia) Gray, Bobby (Marie) Gray and Darrell (Carolyn) Gray, all of Union: four daughters, Barbara (Cleo) Jones, Shirley Hunter, Debra Gray and May JoAnn (Earl) Jones, all of Union: two brothers, James (Bessie) Johnson of Carlisle and Ivory Johnson of Union; three sisters, Ruby Dawkins of Shelby, Inez (Lewis) Battle of Washington, D.C. and Sallie (Will) Hunter of Philadelphia, Pa.; 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Baptist Church by the Rev. Courtney Mills. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be at the Whitney Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Clyde G. Scott Sr.
Retired heavy equipment contractor

Clyde Grady Scott, Sr., 69, husband of Kay O'Shields Scott of 2727 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, died at his home Monday, March 17, 2003. Mr. Scott was born in Union on Aug. 19, 1933, a son of Bessie Crawford Scott Head of Union and the late Willie K. Scott. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Mr. Scott was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a retired self-employed heavy equipment contractor.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Clyde Grady Scott Jr. of Buffalo, a step-son, Wayne Varner of Buffalo; two sisters, Lillian Bernard and Carol Henderson, both of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Billy Scott and Fred Scott, both of Union; two granddaughters, Angie Varner and Bailey Scott; two grandsons, Bradley Scott and Aron Varner; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Randy Pettit and Carla Dillard. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Doug Leonhardt, Mike Scott, Billy Wayne Scott, Kin Headley, James Sanford and Eddie Kelly. Members of the Coffee Club at Midway Barbecue are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 2727 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, and will receive friends at the church Wednesday immediately after services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Building Fund, 2153 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mattie Suber
Carlisle resident

CARLISLE Mattie Suber of Carlisle died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

William E. Sanders
Retired from DOT

GAFFNEY William Earl (Willie) Sanders, 66, of 473 Hickory Grove Road, Gaffney, husband of Frances (Jean) Pridmore Sanders, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 10:40 a.m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after an extended illness. Mr. Sanders was born in Cherokee County on Sept. 22, 1937, a son of the late Malcolm (Grady) Sanders and Helen Howell Sanders. He was a member of Mesopotamia United Methodist Church. Mr. Sanders was retired from the S.C. Department of Transportation after 12 years of service. He was the recipient of an Award of Excellence presented by Gov. Mark Sanford in 2003 for Outstanding service to the State of South Carolina.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Marie Gault of Union and Barbara Kay Guyton of Pacolet; and two grandchildren, Robin Shields of Union and Nichole Guyton of Pacolet. Mr. Sanders was predeceased by a grandson, William Christopher Guyton. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mesopotamia United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Tommy Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bill Henry, Jackie Gardner, Dennis Robinson, Frank Burns, Jeremy Hudson and Jamie Morris.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Johnston Lee, J. B. Lee, Dick McCullough, Benny Fowler, Lee Sanders, Glenn Clark, Wayne Garner, Doug Hayes, Rick Horne, Bobby Middleton, Henry Sprouse, Columbus Hunter, Nathan Pierce, Freddie Spencer and any member of the S.C. Department of Transportation Cherokee County Maintenance Crew.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 473 Hickory Grove Road, Gaffney. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Bobby Joe Alexander
Former United Merchants employee

Bobby Joe Alexander, 62, of 302 Blassingame St., died at his home Tuesday, March 18, 2003, after a sudden illness. Mr. Alexander was born in Union on April 27, 1940, a son of Lillian Barber Alexander of Union and the late Paul Edward Alexander. He was a Baptist and was formerly employed with United Merchants, Union and Buffalo plants.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Mickie Diane Alexander of the home and Vanessa Dale Alexander of Columbia; two sons, Paul Edward Alexander of Buffalo and Joe Dean Alexander of Columbia; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte A. West of the home, Judith A. and Steve Crumley and Diane A. and Jimmy Williams of Union; four grandchildren, Michael Alexander Juenger and Joey Alexander, both of Columbia, Matthew Paul Alexander and Lindsay Summer Davis, both of Buffalo; and a great-grandson, Kristain Gage Booth of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Crocker and Dr. Ken Snead. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Steve Crumley Jr., Chris Gregory, Frankie Prince, Michael Harris, Sammy Meadows and Donald Rhinehardt.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 302 Blassingame St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rebecca W. Lane
Former Conso employee

Rebecca Williford Lane, 59, of 161 Lane Road, wife of Harold Dean Lane Sr., died at her home Tuesday, March 18, 2003. Mrs. Lane was born in Union on May 14, 1943, a daughter of George and Essie Moore Williford of Union. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church. Mrs. Lane was a graduate of Union High School and received her associate degree from the University of South Carolina-Union. She was a former employee of Conso.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Phillip Franklin of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold Dean Lane Jr. and Lisa Tucker Lane of Union; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lib Williford and Jane W. and Charlie Wilson Jr., all of Union and five grandchildren, Lee, Kacie and Courtney Franklin, Mitch and Shannon Lane.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Jarvis, the Rev. Ralph Brown and Dr. Ed McAbee. Burial will be in the Hawkins Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Cecil Brown Jr., Paul Dean Williford, S.W. Williford, Charlie Wilson, III, Eddie Paul Lane and Scottie Lane.

Visitation will be tonight from 7 until 9 at the Holcombe Funeral Home. The body will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The families are at her daughter's home at 152 Lane Road and at her parentÕ home, 137 Phillips Road.

Theo J. Murphy
Retired beautician

GAFFNEY Theo Juanita Murphy, 77, of 5626 Union Highway, Gaffney, died at her residence Tuesday, March 18, 2003, after a sudden illness. Miss Murphy was born in Jonesville on Aug.19, 1925, a daughter of the late J. C. and Lydia Black Murphy. She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and was a retired beautician with the Village Beauty Shop. Miss Murphy was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Lois Johnson Murphy of Pelion; 11 nieces, Freida Lucas, Betty Tyson, Peggy Black, Bobbie Lancaster, Ginger Gross, Mickey Timmons, June Hewitt, Risa Garris, Debra Bradburn, Becky Crocker and Harriett Jeffcoat; three nephews, Dallas Murphy Jr., Boyd Murphy and Marshall Murphy; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Miss Murphy was predeceased by two sisters, Willie Mae Beckham and Ibera Murphy and three brothers, Dallas Murphy Sr., Ernest Murphy and Leroy Murphy.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. Memorials may be made to the Jonesville Baptist Church, Jonesville, S.C., 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Catherine B. Frost
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Catherine Bright (Mama Dot) Frost, 72, of 106 Teal Road, Union, wife of Thomas Earl Frost, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 2:18 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Frost was born in Gaffney on Aug. 31, 1931, a daughter of the late Travis Willie and Nellie May Wylie Bright. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mrs. Frost was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and was former owner and operator of Mama Dot's Cafe in Buffalo.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter and son-in-law, Janice F. and Steve Maness of Buffalo; a son, Jeffery Scotty Frost of the home; a sister, Francis Black of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Wanda Bright of Union; three grandchildren, Adam Maness and his wife Lisa of Jonesville, Joseph Maness and Lindsey Maness, both of Buffalo; three great-grandchildren, Dawson Maness and Daisie Maness, both of Jonesville and Auston Maness of Wellford.

Mrs. Frost was predeceased by two sons, Danny Frost and Joey Frost, a brother, Carl Dean Bright, and four sisters, Carolyn Bright, Barbara Bright, Lois Lanier and Sandra McDonald. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Lewis Horne, Bobby Horne, Jesse Carter, Justin Maness, Tim Black and Randy Lanier. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 6 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 pm. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bright, 502 Toney Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Marie B. Young
Retired from Excel Hosiery Mill

Marie Bailey Young, 92, of 148 Sardis School House Road, Union, died Friday morning in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Miss Young was born in Union on Sept. 27, 1911, a daughter of the late James B. and Josie Bailey Young. She was the oldest member of Sardis United Methodist Church and was retired from Excel Hosiery Mill.

Miss Young was the last surviving member of her immediate family which included 10 children. Surviving are a son, William S. (Bowser) Young and his wife Dorothy of Union; twin-grandchildren, Sherry Y. Hoffman and husband Steve of Spartanburg and Terry Young and wife Jean of Union; three great-grandchildren, Chad Silvers and wife Mia of Roebuck, Leslie Sykes and husband David of Lexington and Stewart Young of Clinton; a great-great-grandson, David Wells Sykes of Lexington; a nephew and two nieces reared in the home, Ralph Young of the home, Brenda Y. Mobley and Dale Horne of Union; a number of other nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by her nephew and niece, Billy and Jan Gallman and the Rev. Angelia Price. The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery Sunday afternoon at 1:45 to form the honorary escort: Sheriff Howard Wells, John D. Long, Doile Arthur and Dr. Kent Switzer.

The family is at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. William S. (Bowser) Young, 134 Mt. Vernon Road, Union. Visitation will be at Sardis United Methodist Church on Sunday from 1 until 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to Sardis United Methodist Church, 964 Sardis Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Ola N. Simmons
Buffalo native

GREENSBORO, N.C. Ola Noland Simmons, 99, of Moses Cone Extended Care, Greensboro, widow of William Otto Simmons Sr., died Sunday, March 16, 2003. A native of Buffalo, she was a daughter of the late Robert Noland and Blanch Pruitt Noland. She was a former member of the St. Luke Baptist Church in Lukesville and the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Spartanburg.

In December 1936 she moved to Greensboro and joined the St. Stephens Congregation Christian Church. She later joined Providence Baptist Church where she was member of the Julia Hyatt Missionary Circle. She was a member of the Magnolia Chapter No. 23 Order of the Eastern Star and the East Side Sympathy Club. Mrs. Simmons was a devoted homemaker, seamstress, and retailer at the Simmons Market and Grocery Store. Also during this period she worked in a New Deal program established by former President Franklin D. Roosevelt designed to make garments for underprivileged school children.

She rolled bandages for use during World War II and volunteered in a canteen to provide USO refreshments for traveling servicemen. Surviving are a son, William O. Simmons Jr.; three daughters, Dorothy S. Cameron, Yvonne S. Martin, Margaret Simmons Thomas, all of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 13 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 1106 Tuscaloosa St., Greensboro.

Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery. Perry J. Brown Funeral Home, 909 Market St., Greensboro is in charge of the arrangements. Mattie T. Suber
Mother of the church

CARLISLE Mattie Tucker Suber, 91, of 3441 Janie Goree Blvd., widow of Lawyer Suber, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Suber was born in Herbert, Sept.12, 1911, a daughter of the late William and Sarah Randolph Tucker. She was a member of the James Chapel Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher.

Surviving are three sons, Lawyer William Suber Jr. and Orson Suber, both of of New York, Melvin Suber of Carlisle; six daughters, Connie Nickilson and Ira Williams, both of New York: Minnie Griffith, Harriet Sims, Sadie Fillyaw and Carolyn Mayfield, all of Carlisle; a brother, William Tucker of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister, Frances Skinner of Carlisle; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at James Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie Edwards. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held at the Whitney Funeral Home until 7 this evening. The body will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
