Cleveland Nicholson
Mr. Cleveland Nicholson, of Johnston, was born on December 23, 1951 to the late John Nicholson and Mozell Pixley Nicholson and died Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Rosa Spring Baptist Church in Johnston, with Pastor Winston Oliphant, the Rev. Lewis Burt, Eulogist, and the Rev. Essie Nicholson officiating. Burial was at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery, and the Repast was at the Society Hall in Johnston.
He is survived by four sisters, Lillie Mae Daniels, Virginia Amos, Annie Ozell Jones, all of Johnston, and Yvonne Anderson, Fort Washington, Md.; three brothers, Charlie Nicholson (Katherine), Washington, D.C., James E. Nicholson (Essie), Edgefield, and Joel Nicholson, Johnston; a special niece, Robin Andrews(Floyd), Evans, Ga.; a special friend, Greta Hartzog, Johnston; and a host of nieces and nephews. Arrangements were the care of Amos & Sons Funeral Home, Johnston.
Margaret Helen Payne
Graveside services for Miss Margaret Helen Payne, 94, of Johnston, were held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Mt. of Olives cemetery.
Miss Payne, a native of Johnston, died Saturday, March 19. She was the daughter of the late John Howard and Pauline Lewis Payne. A graduate of Johnston High School in 1933, Miss Payne gave the same salutatory speech her mother had given at her graduation. Before graduating from the University of South Carolina, she attended Coker College. Later she received a library science degree from Peabody. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Miss Payne was librarian of Conway High School for 25 years and at Wade Hampton in Greenville for 10 years. After retirement she moved back to Johnston and twice served as president of the Retired Teachers' Association of Edgefield County. A member of Johnston First Baptist Church, she served as prayer chairman of the Gleaner's Sunday School Class and program leader of the Jessie Mobley Circle.
Survivors include cousins and a special friend, Betty Jean Taylor.

Sadie Virginia Percival
Ms. Sadie Virginia “Perci” Percival, of Edgefield, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Medical College of Georgia.
A celebration of her life was held at McCormick Country Club in McCormick on Sunday, March 20, from 2 to 5 p.m., complete with Argentine Tango dancing.
born on May 22, 1939 to Sara and Frank Percival in Edgefield, she was known to most as “Perci.” She graduated from Edgefield High School in 1957. She attended nursing school at the Medical University of South Carolina where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1959. She met Larry Worden in Charleston and they married
in 1961. Later they moved to Berkley, Mich., where they settled until 1976 until they moved to Summerville with their three children. They divorced in 1978. Ms. Percival spent her entire adult life as a caregiver. When she retired from nursing in 2006, she provided live-in care for her ailing best friend and then her mother until her own condition prevented her from continuing. She was talented in drama, music and dance. She often played the piano and enjoyed teaching the piano to her grandchildren. She had a genuine love for music. She especially enjoyed listening to Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole. She was a competitive ballroom and shag dancer until 2003 when she discovered the Argentine Tango. She devoted much of her spare time in the last eight years to pursuing the joy of the Argentine Tango. She also spent time creating arts and crafts with her grandchildren.
In addition to her mother, Ms. Percival is survived by her sister, Faye Parks; her brother, David Percival; her children, Robin Rast and her husband Bert of Atlanta, Ga., Erica Bowen and her husband Rich of Annapolis, Md., and Major Gregory Worden and his wife Doreen of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Sarah Rast, Austin Worden, Rebecca Rast and Alysha Worden; her niece, Heather Peele and her children Christian, Britnee and Autumn.
Her father and her sister, Frankie Percival, preceded her in death.

Ralph L. Simms Jr.
Mr. Ralph Lloyd Simms Jr., 48, of Lewie Road in Gilbert, died Saturday, March 19, 2011.
A Memorial service was held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 6 p.m. with a visitation after the service until 8 p.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.
Mr. Simms was born in Washington, D.C. and was a plumber.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Barbara Ann Duncan Simms; his wife, Tracey McCormick Simms; a son, Ralph L. Simms III; two daughters, Jennifer and Nicole Bryant; a stepson, Tommie Mitchell; two stepdaughters, Haley and Kalynn Mitchell; a brother, Donald Ray Simms; a sister, Mary Ann Williams; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Simms was predeceased by his father, Mr. Ralph L. Simms Sr.

Robert Shaw
Mr. Robert Shaw, 75, of Orangeburg, husband of Pennie Brunson Shaw, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
A Memorial Service was held Friday, May 22, at 2:30 p.m. at Edgefield First Baptist Church in Edgefield.
Mr. Shaw was born in West Rushville, Ohio and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in West Rushville. He was the son of the late Leland M. Shaw and Mrs. Cuzunne Getchen Shaw of West Rushville. He was a retired businessman for Greenville Hospital Systems and currently employed with Premier Baths.
In addition to his wife and his mother, he is survived by a son, James Leland Shaw, Irvine, Calif.; a brother, John Shaw, West Rushville; and two grandchildren.

Mr. James “Holley” Mayson, 65, of Sloan Drive in Edgefield, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at his home.
Graveside services were held Friday, May 22, at 3 p.m. at Bold Spring Baptist Church. Burial was in Bold Spring cemetery in Callison.
born in Edgefield County, he was a graduate of Strom Thurmond High School Class of 1962, a retired car salesman, a member of 1st Baptist Honea Path, and served in the National Guard in Edgefield.
Survivors include his mother, Myrtle Cogburn Mayson, Greenwood; two daughters, Amy M. Laidlaw, Greenwood, and Heather M. Campbell, Greer; a sister, Beth Mayson Hyman, Greenwood; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, J.H. Mayson.

Otis Mathis, of Johnston, died at Trinity Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Henry J. “Hank” Caines Jr.
Funeral Services for Mr. Henry J. "Hank" Caines Jr., 47, of Birch Drive in North Augusta, who died Saturday, March 26, 2011, were conducted Tuesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Community Church. The Rev. John Los officiated. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Regulators Girls Softball Team. Active pallbearers were Brian Ellefson, Ted Carpenter, Ed Felton, Joe Hong, David Brunson, Tim Horton, Tim Benenhaley and James Haffly. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Park.
Mr. Caines was a lifelong resident of North Augusta and a member of Cornerstone Community Church. He was an active church member who served as church Board member and Missions Committee chairman. He was owner of Caines Construction, the coach of Regulators Girls Softball Team, and was a Strom Thurmond High School Booster Club member.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Dana Caines; a son, Trey Caines, North Augusta; a daughter, Lauren Caines, North Augusta; his mother, Sylvia P. Caines, North Augusta; a sister and brother-in-law, Kerri and Stacey Charles, North Augusta; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Gail and Steve Griner, Martinez, Ga., and Debra and John Williams, Beaufort; a brother-in-law, David Holton, Augusta; and numerous cousins and special friends

Maggie Weathersbee Hewett
Mrs. Maggie Weathersbee Hewett, 81, of Martinez, Ga., died Saturday, March 26, 2011. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Jackson Memorial Park in Jackson.
born March 18, 1930, Mrs. Hewett was a native of Langley, but made Martinez her home for the past 35 years. Mrs. Hewett was an avid animal lover.
Survivors include a son, Bruce L Hewett and his wife, Debra, Jackson; sisters, Anna Marie Caudle, Aiken, and Sally Herzog, Lynwood; a grandson, Jordan I. Hewett, Martinez; and nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Hewett, and a sister, Ophie P. Rearden.

Mrs. Betty Joe Fountain Murray, 76, of Oakdale Drive in Johnston, wife of the late Willie E. Murray, died Friday, March 25, 2011 at her residence.
Graveside Services were held Monday, March 28, at 11 a.m. at Aiken Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Murray was born in Mitchell, Ga. and was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker.
