Joseph S. Avery, 82, of 1527 Rock House Road, husband of Pearl Pittman Avery died Saturday, May 08, 2010 at his home. born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Ludie and Mary Metts Avery. He was an US Army veteran of the Korea Conflict and was a member of Redemption Baptist Church of Enoree, SC. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are seven sons: Joey Avery, Jr., David Owens, both of Laurens, Allen Avery, Gene Avery, both of Clinton, Gene Owens, Stevie Owens, both of Greenwood and Carroll Owens of Hickory Tavern; three sisters: Geraldine Morris of Newberry, Sissy Nelson of Clinton and Linda Penland of Laurens; six brothers: Frank Avery, Jimmy Avery, Mac Avery, Bobby Avery, all of Clinton, Dub Avery and Buddy Avery, both of Laurens; nine grandchildren: Jamie Owens, Hailey Owens, Kaleb Avery, Corry Owens, Mandy Calvert, Dale Childress, Amanda Garrett, Charles Harrison and Benjamin Childress; and eleven great grandchildren. John Richard Johnson, of Savannah Lakes Village, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Self Regional Healthcare. John was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Madelon Johnson. He was a graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He spent most of his working career with Case New Holland in Human Resources specializing in Labor Relations. He was a past president of the Savannah Lakes Village Property Owners Association and a member of the Men's Golf Association. John is survived by Sue, his wife of 48 years, his daughter, Beth, of Duluth, Georgia and son, Lance, of Sherwood, Arkansas, and brothers, James and Robert Johnson, both of Cedar Rapids.

Elizabeth Nabors Vines, 91, widow of J. Sam Vines, Sr., died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Savannah Heights Living Center, McCormick. born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late D. O. and Margaret Nickles Nabors. She was the owner of Dan Ella Cattle Farm and was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, where she was a former member of the choir and the United Methodist Women. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Hellams of Greenwood; a son, Joe Vines, Jr. of Columbia; two sisters, Gladys Nabors Ouzts of Saluda and Bernice White of Greenwood; two brothers, Billy Nabors and Carl Nabors, both of Greenwood; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Huie Lee “PeeWee” Williams, or “Napoleon” to his CB friends, 70, died at his home on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. born in Monroe, GA, he was a son of the late Robert Lee Williams and Azzie Lee Morrison. He retired from Moore Business Forms and Defiance Metal and had also been employed as an agent for Life of Georgia, the Greenwood Mills Compound and Stockman’s Radio & TV. While at Moore, he organized Moore’s Clowns for employee and community events. He was a member of Mathews Lodge #358 A.F.M., where he served as Worshipful Master in 1986 and joined the Past Worshipful Master for Life Club in 1987. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mary Pinckney Ouzts Chapter 1, and the Mason’s Advisory Board and served on the Leadership Correspondent Council of the International Supreme Council of the Order of Demolay from 1982-1984 and the Advisory Board of the International Order of Rainbow Girls from 1984-1985. He had served as a Cub Scout Master in Ninety Six and had been a volunteer fireman and rescue squad paramedic in Arkansas. He was a member of Jordan Memorial Baptist Church, Greenwood. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Stevenson (Stevie) Williams. Surviving are his daughter, Julie Lynette Williams; a son, Thomas C. Williams; grandsons, Steven C. Williams, Thomas Lance Williams and Hunter Gordon; granddaughter, Michala Barnum; great granddaughter, Brooke Nicole Williams; a brother, Lanier Williams; a sister, Polly Smith and several nieces and nephews.

Florence Elliott Matthews, 80, widow of Andrew Cauthen Matthews, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010. born in Greenwood on November 12, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Daniel Elliott, Sr. and Desdemona King Elliott. She attended Lander College and retired from Parke-Davis. She was a member of Lupo United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Dana Crenshaw and her husband, Roger, and Debbie Smathers and her husband, Jerry, all of Greenwood; two sons, Michael Matthews of Grand Rapids, MI and Tim Matthews and his wife, Rhonda, of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, who all referred to her as “GanGan”, Ian Smathers and Paige Walden, both of Greenwood, Jason Crenshaw, Robin Crenshaw and Matthew Crenshaw, all of Athens, GA, Melissa Matthews of Bryson City, NC and Graham Matthews of Greenwood; six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, some who called her “Aunt Pants”. Bowick, Sr. and Ada Bon Bowick. He worked at Milliken for 25 years in McCormick before retiring from Strom’s Drug Store. Mr. Bowick was a member of McCormick Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Frances Cooper Lavender, 91, of 506 Saco Street, widow of James Milton Lavender, died Monday, April 26, 2010 at Self Regional Medical Center. born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Fritz and Emma Balcombe Cooper. She was retired from Greenwood Mills, where she was a member of the Quarter Century Club. She was a member of South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she taught the Frances Lavender Class for 52 years. She was the recipient of the Upper SC Conference Sunday School Teacher of the Year in 2000 and 2001 and the 1995 recipient of the Amethyst Award for Outstanding Christian Leadership. In addition to her husband of 49 years, she was also preceded in death by sisters, Allie B. Long and Azilee Cooper and brothers, Coke, John, Rueben, Otto, Estee, Rinza and Junior Cooper. Surviving are her daughter, Judy Morrison, of Lenoir, NC; two sons, Johnnie Lavender of Easley and Michael Lavender of the home; a sister, Vivian Bigham of Greenville; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and 21 nieces and nephews.
