Theodore R. "Ted" Harris
Mr. Theodore R. 'Ted" Harris, 64, of Glenmore Avenue in Belvedere, died Monday, May 31, 2010.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at Old Storm Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Martin Ryan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Harris, a native of Edgefield County, was a retired detective for the Richmond County Police Department and Blythe Police Department. He was a graduate of Edgefield County High School and a member of Shaws Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Devine Harris; his mother, Everdener Harris; two sons, Sherton Leonard Harris and Michael Cook; three daughters, Andrea Cannon (Curtis), Gail McKie Gibson and Amanda Darville (Michael); one brother, Leonard Harris (Barbara); four sisters, Mamie Jennings (Bishop) Shirley Hammond (Beaver), Everlener Tanks (Deke) and Penny Talbert (Ike), 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two aunts; and a host of other relatives.

Julia C. Herndon
Mrs. Julia Crouch Herndon, 88, of Edgefield, wife of the late Nolan Herndon, Sr., died Monday June 7, 2010 at Agape Senior Care in West Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Edgefield United Methodist Church, with burial in Travis Park cemetery in Saluda. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Herndon was born in Saluda County and was a member of Edgefield United Methodist Church. She was a retired secretary.
Survivors include two sons, Nolan A. (Sue) Herndon Jr., West Columbia, James M. (Debbie) Herndon, Pawley’s Island; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Kodman, Kathy (Ricky) Jackson, John (Sherrie) Herndon, Jason (Jennifer) Herndon, Justin Herndon; five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Thomas, and Drew Kodman, Taylor and Hunter Jackson.

Mrs. Mattie B. Key McCain, 72, of Lakeview Road in North Augusta, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at UPAC of Aiken.

Mrs. McCain, a native of Edgefield County, was a member of Carey Hill Baptist Church where she served on the deaconess ministry, choir ministry and couples ministry. Mrs. Seebell Black Butler, 92, of Saluda, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Saluda Nursing Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lewis Burt. Burial was in the church cemetery.
born in Saluda County, daughter of the late Elbert and Leasey Smallwood Black, Mrs. Butler was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Woman's Home Aide Society #41 and Young Women of Honor of Johnston.
She is survived by sons, Albert Butler, New York, Johnny Butler and Marshall Butler, both of Saluda, and Henry T. Butler and Joe Louis Butler, both of Johnston; two daughters, Annie Ruth Stevens, Clinton, Md., and Leathy Key, Saluda; a sister, Julia McKinney, Washington, D.C.; 32 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and other relatives.

Charles Willis Koons
A memorial service for the Rev. Charles Willis Koons, 76, of Johnston, was held Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Augusta, Ga. Burial will take place at a later date at Bethel Lutheran cemetery.
The Rev. Koons, a native of Springfield, Ohio, died Sunday, July 17, 2011. born on October 14, 1934, he was a son of Wade H. and Katharine H. Koons. Most of his early years, he lived in Carey, Ohio. He graduated from Parkersburg West Virginia High School in 1952. In 1956, he graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He then attended Northwestern Lutheran Seminary in Minneapolis, Minn. and graduated with a master of divinity degree in June, 1959. He was ordained into the ministry of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) in 1959 after which he served parishes in Toledo, Ohio and Anniston, Ala. In 1967, he responded to a call from the LCA Mission Board to serve as pastor of St. Peters Lutheran Church and Administrator of St. Peters School in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa where he served for seven years. After returning to the United States in 1971, he served a parish in Florence, Ala. where he met and married
Nelle Bowling Locker. In 1990, they moved to Johnston, where he pastored St. John Lutheran Church until his retirement in 2000. At this time, he and his wife became members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aiken. He then served as visitation pastor at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Augusta, Ga. He continued there until his death. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Janet (Charles) Quillen of Madison, Ala.; a son, Al (Elise) Locker of Westford, Maine; four grandchildren, Rachel Quillen, Patrick Quillen, Alex Locker and Kirsten Locker; a sister, Nancy (Rev. Bruce) Pederson and her family of Minneapolis, Minn.

Helen Frances Willis Woodberry
Mrs. Helen Frances Willis Woodberry, 90, widow of Stratford Gillman Woodberry, of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011.
Graveside services were held Sunday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at Bonaventure cemetery in Savannah, Ga. A celebration of the life of Helen Woodberry will be held Wednesday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Johnston United Methodist Church in Johnston.
Growing up in upstate South Carolina, she graduated from Parker High School, Anderson Junior College and Coker College. She received a degree in library science from Emory University. As an educator for 42 years, she taught in Greenville County, Anderson County, Georgetown County (Andrews), and was media specialist in Edgefield County at Strom Thurmond High School and in Aiken County at Ridge Spring-Monetta High School. She was a member of Johnston United Methodist Church, her former residence for 44 years. For the past six years, she had lived in Mount Pleasant and attended Hibben United Methodist whenever she could. While living in Johnston, she was an active member of the United Methodist Women, the Mizphah Sunday School Class, the church choir, and often served on the church board. She was active in the community as a member of Ridge Spring Garden Club, Peach Blossom Garden Club and the Lioness Club of Johnston. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Teacher Society. She is survived by her children, Jane W. Fordham (husband, Stephen), Mt. Pleasant, Joseph Woodberry (wife, the Rev. Debra Griffis-Woodberry), Greenville, and Paula W. Davis, Columbia; four grandchildren, Katie Lauren Davis, Courtney Woodberry, Hampton Young and Benjamin Fordham; a brother, Joe E. Willis (wife, Bertie), Simpsonville; a sister, Margie W. Clary (husband, Ralph), James Island; and a sister-in-law, Mary Dean Willis, Laurens.
She was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Martin R. Willis.

Lila Dowd Powell
Funeral services for Mrs. Lila Dowd Powell, 96, of Johnston, were held Monday, June 7, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. She died Friday, June 4.
Mrs. Powell was born in Little Mountain, a daughter of the late James Milton and Maggie Shealy Dowd. She was married
to the late Clarence F. Powell.
She is survived by two sons, C.F. (Rick) and wife Emily of Johnston, Donald and wife Jackie of Rockville, VA.; two daughters, Jane Mims of Johnston and Dianne Hare and husband Bob of Edgefield; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Ophelia; six brothers; and two sisters.

Mr. Michael David Riggs, 40, of Trenton, died Friday, June 4, 2010.

Mary Ellen Ferrell Pittman
Mrs. Mary Ellen Ferrell Pittman, 82, of Wayland Street in Warrenville, died Saturday, May 22, 2010.
Funeral services celebrating her life were held Monday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church in Clearwater, with Pastor Tad Marshall and the Rev. Bill Reese officiating. Burial was in Westview cemetery in Augusta, Ga.
Mrs. Pittman was born in Augusta, Ga. on July 11, 1927 to the late Herman F. Farrell and Rosa Lee (Usry) Ferrell. She was known as Mother, Momma, Nanny, Nina and May-May and retired from South Aiken Baptist Church after 25 years of dedicated service.
She was a charter member of Lakeside Baptist Church (formerly Piney Heights Baptist Church) where she was a member for over 41 years of which she worked in the nursery for over 33 years. She was also a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. Mrs. Pittman will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will always be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Paulette Pittman, Warrenville, and Judy (Jeff) Davis, Beech Island; three grandchildren, Michael (Shelia) Rosier, Trenton, Mark (Camille) Rosier, Graniteville, and Becky Rosier, North Augusta; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Griffin, Sara Rosier and Dylan Rosier; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Flo Harveston, DeAlice Strickland, Frankie (Collene) Price, Robert (Annette) McFarland, Gene (Dorothy) Youngblood, John (Bobbie) Futch, Michael (Ann) Coursey, Silas (Sarah) Pittman, and Tillman A. Harper.

David A. Herrin
Funeral services for Mr. David A. Herrin, 63, of Johnston, were held Monday, May 10, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church, with burial in Mt. of Olives cemetery.
Mr. Herrin, a native of Johnston, died Saturday, May 8. He was a son of the late James D and Ruby Claxton Herrin and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a security guard with Sizemore Security and was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church .
