Georgia Houston Griffin
Mrs. Georgia Houston Griffin, of Lakeview Road in North Augusta, died Monday, May 30, 2011.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Old Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Louis T. Cofey officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Griffin, a native of Edgefield County, was a member of Old Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Pamela G. Miles, Susie Goodwin and Lulu (John) Simpson; five sons, Jerry (Doris) Griffin, Arthur Griffin, Horace (Denise) Griffin, Sam (Olivia) Griffin Jr., and Charles L. Houston; two sisters, Annie (Lawrence) Cormier and Alberta O'Connor; three brothers, Henry (Bertha) Houston, Joseph (Mary) Houston and Robert (Alithia) Houston; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Dan Matheny Herlong
Mr. Dan Matheny Herlong, 90, husband of Dorothy Oates Herlong, died June 1, 2011.
Services were held Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at Harmony United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors followed in the Harmony cemetery.
born in the Harmony Community of Edgefield County, he was a son of the late Lewis Mike and Loline Matheny Herlong. Dan was the last surviving member of his family. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lewis Mike Jr., Marvin (Buck), David (Skeebo) and Padgett; and sisters, Virginia (Mrs. W.G. Smith) and Lavinia. He attended Johnston High School where he played football and baseball. He enlisted in World War II Air Force V, proudly serving his country in the Pacific area of Australia, New Zealand and Guam. Dan was a life member of Harmony United Methodist Church where he was an integral part of many church functions; he served on the Administrative Board, was superintendent of the Sunday School and sang in the choir. He also participated in the Salkahatchie program. He was lovingly known as ‘The Bubble Gum Man’ at church, as he never missed a Sunday of passing out bubble gum to the children of Harmony Church. In 1946, Dan married
Dorothy Oates of Chester and settled in the Harmony Community. Throughout his career he farmed, taught auto mechanics at Strom Thurmond High School and worked at Riegel Textile Corporation until his retirement. He was active in the Johnston American Legion, the Edgefield County Farm Bureau, the Future Farmers of America, the Young Farmers and the Harmony Grange.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by a son, Dan Michael Herlong of Johnston; three grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Herlong of Summerville, Ga., Frederick (Erick) Cavanaugh Herlong (Mayme) of Greenville, William Franklin (Trey) Howard, III of Aiken and their mother, Mary Anne Cavanaugh of Aiken; three great-grandchildren, Virginia Grace Herlong, Kate Cavanaugh Herlong and Guy Stoll Benjamin of Greenville; and niece, Genna Covar of Edgefield.

Jimmie Mack
Mr. Jimmie Mack, 66, of Amelia Drive in North Augusta, husband of Ann C. Mack, died Monday, May 30, 2011 at his residence.
The Mass of Christian Burial and Prayer Vigil were celebrated Friday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church, with Father Cherian Thalakulam as celebrant. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Park.
Additional survivors include one son, John Mack; one daughter, Winnie Rita Carroll; and six grandchildren.

Fred L. Mathis
Mr. Fred L. Mathis, 82, husband for 59 years to Mary Jo Mathis, of North Augusta, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at his residence.
His funeral service was held Monday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at Sweetwater Baptist Church, with Dr. Paul Noe officiating. Burial followed in Sweetwater Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tucker Mathis, Jacob Mathis, Joel Mathis, Daniel Webber, Phillips Johnson, Jeff Lacey and Gary McNeal.
Mr. Mathis lived in North Augusta and was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta. He taught Timothy Sunday School Class for 22 years, was the first president of North Augusta Board of Realtors, and founder and partner of Mathis Realty. He was an avid hunter and a horseback rider.
Additional survivors include three sons, Andrew Tucker Mathis and his wife Kelly, Joseph Duncan Mathis, and Clinton Darrow Mathis and his wife Lynn, all of North Augusta; three daughters, Mary Ellen Mathis Webber and her husband Mike of Anderson, Elizabeth Jane Mathis Brown and her husband Jerry of Windham, N.H., and Shirley Karen Mathis Thompson and her husband Alan of Edgefield; two sisters, Norma Mathis Pate of West Point, Va., and Willie Jo Mathis Pinner of Black Mountain, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Tucker Mathis and Minnie Lanham Mathis; and one brother, Daniel Tucker Mathis Jr.

Wanda Campbell Proctor
Mrs. Wanda Campbell Proctor, 54, of Southern View Drive in Graniteville, wife of Ervin Proctor, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at her residence.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone United Pentecostal Church in Belvedere.
Mrs. Proctor was born in Anniston, Ala. and was a homemaker. She attended Cornerstone United Pentecostal Church. She was the daughter of the late Darrell and Margaret Meadows Campbell.
In addition to her husband, survivors included a daughter, Kimberly C. Whittle, Belvedere; three grandchildren, Ashton Jacob Allison, Isabella Nicole O’Neal, Alexandria Paige Campbell; two brothers, Michael Campbell, Canton, Ga., Glenn Campbell, Aiken; a sister, Gayle Hankison, Aiken.
Mrs. Proctor was predeceased by a brother, Danny Campbell.

R. Vernon Whitlock
Mr. R. Vernon Whitlock, 89, of Whitlock Road in Trenton, husband of Jackie Smith Whitlock, died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center.
A Memorial Service was held Monday June 6, at 2 p.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home with Masonic Rites.
Mr. Whitlock was a native of Trenton and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was a retired construction worker at E.I. Dupont and he was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, he was a Mason, and he was a member of the Shriner’s Hejaz Temple Saluda Shrine Club.
Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Vonnie W. Rutland, Ridge Spring, Kitty W. Crumpton, Saluda; three stepdaughters, Vickie Robertson, Trenton, Janet Rowe, Saluda, Joleen Sanders, San Antonio, Texas; a stepson, Hank Robertson, Saluda; two brothers, Bill and Glenn Whitlock, Trenton; a sister, Dorothy Chastek, Silver Springs, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

David Burgess Wardlaw Sr.
Mr. David Burgess Wardlaw Sr., 76, of Newberry, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Providence Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Inman and the Rev. Barry Brown. Entombment followed in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Craig Newton, Jerry Wright, Robert Lake III, Buck Cockrell, Jackie Swindler and David Bowers. Honorary pallbearers were Thurmond Burnett, David Burnett, Alan Gardner, Corey Brazell, Tookie Oates and all active and retired law enforcement officers.
born Oct. 16, 1934, in McCormick, he was a son of the late David Morrah and Florence Burgess Wardlaw. He was a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church. He served in the S.C. National Guard and retired in 1988 from the S.C. Highway Patrol with over 30 years of service. He became a S.C. State Constable in 1988, a position he held until the present. He also served as a bailiff for Newberry County for four years. In 1985, he was named DMV Employee of the Year for the entire state.
Mr. Wardlaw was a member of the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers Association, the S.C. Troopers Association, the American Association of State Troopers, the Fraternal Order of Police and the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association. He was also a member of the Newberry College Athletic Club and the Edgefield District Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife Georgia Frick Wardlaw; a son, David Burgess Wardlaw Jr.; a stepdaughter, Melody S. Brazell of Newberry; a stepson, Steve N. Shealy of Newberry; sisters, Betty W. Belk of Taylors and Florence W. Buie of Spartanburg; a granddaughter, Erin Taylor Wardlaw of Laurens; stepgrandchildren, Matt Amerson, Blake Amerson, Lauren Shealy and Rynn Shealy Rogers; and stepgreat-grandchildren, William Rogers and Harper Crosier.

Funeral services for Mr. Ollie F. Leaverett, of Graniteville, were held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, with the Rev. G.L. Brightharp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Leaverette, a native of Edgefield County, died Wednesday, July 28. He was a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Harold Lawrence McClendon, 82, of Augusta, Ga., husband of Elizabeth Ouzts McClendon, died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab.

Mr. McClendon was a native of Edgefield and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Frank Oscar McClendon and Varie Still McClendon and he was a Mason and a Shriner. He was retired from E.I. Dupont.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Daniel L. McClendon, Doraville, Ga.; a granddaughter, Ashley G. Mayers, Gaston; a brother, LCDR Frank McClendon; and a sister, Lois Worth, both of Fla.

Mr. John Mitchell Ouzts, 85, of Edgefield, husband of the late Ethel Driggers Ouzts, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 in Warrenville.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, with burial in Eastview cemetery in Edgefield.
Mr. Ouzts was born in Edgefield and was a member of Edgefield Church of God. He was a retired textile worker and was a World War II Army veteran.
Survivors include a son, Bobbie (Elaine) Driggers, Warrenville; two grandchildren, Robbie Driggers, Warrenville, Paul (Lori) Driggers, Edgefield; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Taylor Driggers.

Kimberly Lasha Raiford, 26, of Johnston, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at her residence. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 29, at 4 p.m. at Walk of Faith Tabernacle in Johnston.

Mr. George Andrew Waldo, 88, of Crest Road in Edgefield, died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Edgefield County Hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny Clark officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Waldo, a native of Americus, Ga., was a member and deacon of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was the owner and operator of Waldo’s Shoe Repair Service and a U.S. Army veteran.

Mrs. Lucinda Coleman Hammond, 85, of Crestlyn Drive in North Augusta, died Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the Golden Living Center of Augusta.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 10, at 2 p.m. at North Augusta Baptist Church, with the Rev. Martin Ryan officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum.
Mrs. Hammond, a native of Ward, was a member of North Augusta Baptist Church where she served on the usher's ministry, deaconess ministry and other ministries. Survivors include a son, the Rev. Gary (Patsy) Hammond; three granddaughters, Tawanda (Rev. Jessie) Baitmon, Benita Hammond and Pamela Hammond; four devoted nieces, Ida Culbreath, Bettye Allen, Julia (John) Jones and Doris Foreman; a devoted nephew, Preston (Lucy) Madison; a goddaughter, Carolyn (Albert) Nabritt; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
