106 years old

WALTERBORO Funeral services for Alice Logan Brown, 106, mother of Moses Brown of Union, will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in St. Peters A.M.E. Church in Walterboro Burial will be in Zion A. M. E. Church Cemetery in Hendersonville.

Other survivors include five daughters and a number of grandchildren. Hamilton's Funeral home of Walterboro has charge of arrangements.

Ruby D. Burgess
Diversco employee

Ruby Dale Green Burgess, 64, of 120 Canal Road, , widow of Boyd Burgess, died at the home of her daughter at 207 North 3rd St., Sunday, March 30, 2003, at 9 p.m. after a brief illness. Mrs. Burgess was born in Union on Jan. 8, 1939, a daughter of the late Rufus and Martha Gunter Green. She was a Baptist and was employed part-time with Diversco.

Surviving are five daughters, Bernice Canupp of Lockhart, Peggy Patrick, Margie Inman and Debbie Inman, all of Union and Crystal Moody of the home; two sons, Kent Burgess of the home and Jerry ÒBubbaÓ Burgess of Lockhart; three brothers, Donnie Green and Carroll Green, both of Union and Henry Green of Spartanburg; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. Active pallbearers will be Mike Allen, Brent Greer, Ronnie Green, Terry Green, Roger Robinson and Mark Robinson. Employees of Lockhart Power Co. and employees of Diversco of Cedar Hill are asked to assemble at Union Memorial Gardens Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Barry Canupp, 207 North 3rd St., and will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 8:30. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Homer E. Elwood, Sr.
World War II veteran

Homer E. Elwood, Sr. 82 of 105 South 4th St. Ext., died Monday, March 31, 2003, at his home. Mr. Millwood was born in Colebrook, Ohio, a son of the late Perry Jadee Elwood and Ruth Hill Elwood Hart.

Mr. Elwood was a co-owner of Union Tool and Stamping, the inventor and patient holder of the L-WOOD wood heater, a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge #244, the Lockhart Senior Citizens Club, the American Legion Post 76, the Hejaz Shrine Temple, a former Scout Master of Lockhart Troop 45, member of the First Baptist Church of Lockhart and a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Juanita Lee Elwood of the home; four daughters, Loree E. Yarborough of Chester, Marjorie Childers and husband Arnold of Union, Bonnie Crocker and husband Steve of Gaffney, Gina Harris and husband Joey of Lockhart; a son, Homer E. Elwood, Jr. and wife Annette of Laurens; nine grandchildren, Cecil Lee Yarborough, Monica Childers Vlock, Jason Childers, Kristin and Katelyn Crocker, Samantha and Jessica Harris, Zachary and Hunter Elwood and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Lockhart with burial in the Lockhart Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the First Baptist Church of Lockhart. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lockhart, 112 Mill St., Lockhart, S.C. 29364 or Hospice of South Carolina, 128-C Medical Science Dr., Union, S.C. 29379. Gray Funeral Home of Clinton has charge of arrangements.

Leon (L.T.) Hamby
First South Utilities employee

WATERLOO Leon (L.T.) Hamby, 56, of 337 Rosemont Circle died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Hamby was born in Laurens County and was the son of the late Leon and Julia Tucker Hamby. Mr. Hamby was an employee of First South Utilities Co. in Gray Court and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Sherbert Hamby of Union; two sons, Terry Hamby of Union and Ricky Hamby of Laurens; one daughter, Tracy McCall of Waterloo; two step-children, Trena Ray and Jamie Varner both of Union; one brother, Troy L. Hamby of Laurens; six sisters, Irene H. Rogers of Mountville, Mable H. Pearson of Laurens, Jean H. Blackwell of Clinton, Martha H. Bolt of Laurens, Faye H. Hall and Gladys H. Clark both of Union.

He was predeceased by two brothers, James A. Hamby and Jack Hamby. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Laurens with interment in the Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of his sister, Martha Bolt, 1613 Greenwood Road, Laurens. Gray Funeral Home of Laurens is in charge of arrangements.

Ronnie E. Lipsey Sr.
Former Jonesville guardsman

Ronnie Edward Lipsey Sr., 56, of 328 Spencer Road, Jonesville, died at his home Sunday, March 30, 2003, after an extended illness. Mr. Lipsey was born in Union on Jan. 18, 1947, a son of Mary Pearl Baldwin Lipsey of the home and the late Willie Austin Lipsey Sr. He was a former logger and formerly employed with Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant. Mr. Lipsey was also a former member of the Jonesville National Guard. He was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a son, Ronnie E. Lipsey Jr. of Jonesville; three sisters, Peggy Henderson of Jonesville, Shirley Moss of Union and Delia Whitt of Pacolet; three brothers, Marvin Lipsey and Millard D. Lipsey, both of Union and Roger Lipsey of Jonesville; a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Lipsey was predeceased by two brothers, Willia Austin Lipsey Jr. and Jerry Lipsey.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Austin Bennett.. The family will receive friends at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 328 Spencer Road, Jonesville. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Gencie R. Robinson
Buffalo resident

BUFFALO Gencie Reno Robinson, 84, of 351 Linersville Road, Buffalo, widow of George Robinson, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 4:42 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Robinson was born in Haywood County, N.C., on Nov. 23, 1919, a daughter of the late Zeb and Hattie Jones Reno. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Helen R. and Holmes Bishop of Buffalo; two grandchildren, Jill Bishop and Robin Huff and husband Gregory; a great-granddaughter, Annie Huff. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Holmes Bishop, 345 Linersville Road, Buffalo. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Baptist Church, P.O. Box 428, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. (Mac) Winchester
GREENWOOD

(Mac) Winchester, 62, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at his home. He is the son of Margaret Hooper Winchester. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Lewis Funeral Home of Union.

Carl D. Bright
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Carl Dean Bright, 68, of 115 Oak St., Buffalo, husband of Eliza Lunsford Bright, died at his home Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at 12:35 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Bright was born in Gaffney on May 24, 1934, a son of the late Travis and Nellie Wylie Bright. He was a Baptist and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Cathy Gault of the home, Patricia Bright and Carolyn Turner, both of Union; three sons, Christopher Bright of the home, Melvin Bright and Paul Lunsford, both of Union; three sisters, Frances Black, Dot Frost and Sandra McDonald, all of Union; two brothers, Wayne Bright and Terry Austin, both of Union; eight grandchildren, Christina West, William Chad West, Katrina Turner, Joshua Little, Timothy Bright, Jeffrey Bright, Stacy Bright and Miranda Bright and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bright was predeceased by three sisters, Louis Lanier, Carolyn Austin and Barbara Bright. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Dr. John Cody. The family is at the home, 115 Oak St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Alice L. Brown
106 years old

WALTERBORO Alice Logan Brown, 106, of 208 Ackerman St., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Collenton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Brown, widow of the Rev. Henry Douglas Brown, grew up and was educated in Colleton and Beaufort counties.

Born April 2, 1896, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Jane Magwood Logan. She was a dedicated member and mother of St. Peters AME Church where she served as Steward, Trustee, a member of the Missionary Society and the Senior Choir. Mrs. Brown also was a member of Chapter 189 of the Order of the Eastern Star as well as a member of the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women.

She is survived by: a son, Moses Brown of Union; five daughters, Helen (Edmund) Edwards of Jamaica, N.Y., Euralee (Lus) Anderson of Fayetteville, N.C., Merelyn Rivers of Charleston, Beatrice Walker and Hattie (Bill) Moore, both of the home; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing will be held Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Peters AME Church, 300 Fishburne St. The family will also receive friends at the residence. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Peters AME Church by the Rev. Eugene Cryer. Burial will be in the Zion AME Church Cemetery, Hendersonville. The Hamilton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ned W. Skelton

Ned W. Skelton, 92, of 201 East South St., Union, widower of Nina Willard Skelton, died at 7:46 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Carl Winchester
Environmental Air Service employee

Carl (Mac) Winchester, 62, of 519 Brooks Road, Greenwood, died suddenly at his home Thursday morning, April 1, 2004. Mr. Winchester was born in Union County Jan. 31, 1942, the son of Margaret Hooper Winchester and the late Henry Bynum (H. B.) Winchester. He was employed with EAS, Environmental Air Service as a welder and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are Gladys Swindler of Greenwood; two sons, Joel Winchester of Clayton, Ga., and Mike Winchester of Ninety Six; two brothers, David Winchester of Newberry and Barry Winchester of Taylors and five grandchildren.

Mr. Winchester was predeceased by a brother, Doug Winchester, and a sister, Brenda Winchester Pridmore. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Roger Plemmons. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of his mother, Margaret H. Winchester, 509 Happy Valley Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha S. (Sylvia) Norman, of 111 New St., died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Oakmont of Union. The family is at the home, 111 New St. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Ned W. Skelton
World War II veteran

Ned W. Skelton, 92, of 201 East South St., Union, widower of Nina Willard Skelton, died Friday, April 2, 2004 at 7:46 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Skelton was born Jan. 15, 1912 in Union County, a son of the late William Peake Skelton and Bessie Black Skelton. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served over 30 yeas as a member of the board of trustees and overseer of buildings and grounds. He daily visited with the minister and staff of the church and always delighted children in the preschool with his visits.

Mr. Skelton was a graduate of Union High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania. He was a former Union city policeman and a South Carolina Highway Patrolman. A member of the Masonic Lodge #75, Hejaz Shrine Temple and a member of American Legion Post #22. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

During World War II he was graduated from the Military Intelligence Training Academy at Ritchie, Md., and was an investigator with the C.I.C. He completed a course in War Traffic Control conducted by the FBI and taught driver training, first aid classes and lectured on safety education in schools, clubs and churches throughout the state. Mr. Skelton was associated with H.C. Skelton Inc. Textile Machinery and was retired as solid waste control officer with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Mr. Skelton was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be in Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Russell Roark, Rodney Lawson, Tripp Sheorn, William Howell, Ricky Cudd. and Randall Bogan .

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of American Legion Post #22, members of Masonic Lodge #75; members of the Hejaz Shrine Temple, Curtis M. Hyder, W.E. Hyder, C.H. Layton, Mack Lee, Maurice Gregory and Bill Jones. Visitation will be at Grace United Methodist Church Sunday from 2 until 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a church or charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Pettis Chick Jr.
World War II veteran

NEWBERRY Graveside services for Pettis Chick Jr. will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Seekwell Baptist Church. Mr. Cheek died Monday morning, March 31, 2003, at Saint Joseph Rehabilitation Center in Detroit, Mich. Born in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Janie Hunter Chick and Pettis Chick Sr., He was a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Chick is survived by a sister, Ezma Brimmer of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Clarence Chick of Newberry; an aunt, Fannie Mae Hunter of Whitmire; devoted friend and care giver, Louise Bolden; host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The F.B. Pratt & Sons Funeral Home Inc. of Newberry has charge of arrangements.

Otis C. Davis
Spartanburg County native

Otis C. Davis, 77, of 212-B Gault Ave., died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Davis was born on Sept. 8, 1925 in Spartanburg County, the son of the late Mack and Martha McKanic Davis. He graduated from Carver High School in Spartanburg and continued his education at North Carolina A&T University.

He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three daughters, Khadijah Samad, Najla (Omanii) Amatullah, and Doreen Davis all of New York State; two sons, Otis C. Davis Jr. of New York State and Christopher Davis of Atlanta; a brother, Alvin (June) Davis of Hilton Head; an aunt, Phoebe McKanic of Union; and a dear friend, Mildred Norman of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial in Mitchell Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dave Shaffer Jr.
Union locksmith

Dave Shaffer Jr., 74, of 1222 Arthur Boulevard, husband of Jo Weeks Shaffer, died Thursday afternoon, April 3, 2003, after a sudden illness. Mr. Shaffer was born in Aiken, S.C. on May 23, 1928, a son of the late Dave Shaffer Sr. and Annie Mae Freeman Shaffer. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was owner and operator of Shaffer's Locksmith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a step-daughter, Linda Jones of Greenville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Gideon Long. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Harold Freeman, Buddy Freeman, Ray Freeman, Proy Freeman, Steve Freeman and Ken Taft.

Members of the Tomi Vaughan Sunday School Class and members of Maxie Murphy's Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The family is at the home, 1222 Arthur Boulevard and will receive friends at the church Saturday from 2 until 3 p.m. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Teresa Sims
Union High graduate

Teresa (Cookie) Sims, 45, of S. Church Street, Apt. 1, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Union County on June 17, 1957 a daughter of Jimmy Sims of Union and the late Ruthie Jennings Sims. She was a 1975 graduate of Union High School and attended USC-Union. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.

In addition to her father she is survived by a son, Deshawn (Shonda) Sims of Beaufort; four brothers, Jimmy (June) Sims Jr., Ricky Sims and Dwight Sims, all of Union, and Kenneth Sims of Washington, D.C., and a granddaughter, Jia Alei Sims of Beaufort.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial will be in Maple Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the residence of her father, 109 Irene St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
