His two sisters: Mrs. Ruth Duncan and Mrs. Betty Michael reside in Jackson, Ohio, while the baby of the family, Mrs. Mary Gibson lives in Waverly, Ohio.
In 1953, Tom married
Lilian Burrows, an Englishwoman whom he met through mutual friends. Lily and Tom went on to have five children. In 1980, after 27 years of marriage, they separated but never formally divorced.
Having been born with traveling shoes on, Tom left Jackson, Ohio in 1945 to join the United States Army. He later transferred to the United States Air Force upon its creation in 1948. He retired as a Technical Sergeant in 1967. TSgt Stiffler had an interesting military career. He served at numerous duty stations in the United States and Europe, traveling and living in a wide variety of places with Lily and the kids faithfully by his side. His jobs included supply clerk, generals’ aide and flight line inspector. He served with distinction during the aftermath of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
After retiring from the Air Force, Tom and Lily and the kids moved to England in 1967. In 1972, the family emigrated to Australia. The family moved one more time, back to the good U.S of A in 1978. In 1989, Tom and his oldest son Dale headed south of the border. The pair traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America. Residing in Guatemala, and numerous other places, they returned to the U.S. in 1993.
Tom loved target shooting, good cigars, restoring vintage Mustangs, reading novels, drinking gallons of coffee and most of all, spending time with his family. He was the quintessential “people” person. No one was ever a stranger to this engaging, handsome, generous, friendly, hilarious man. Laughter ran rampant when Tom was around.
