R. Vernon Whitlock

Mr. R. Vernon Whitlock, 89, of Whitlock Road in Trenton, husband of Jackie Smith Whitlock, died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center.

A Memorial Service was held Monday June 6, at 2 p.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home with Masonic Rites.

Mr. Whitlock was a native of Trenton and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was a retired construction worker at E.I. Dupont and he was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, he was a Mason, and he was a member of the Shriner’s Hejaz Temple Saluda Shrine Club.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Vonnie W. Rutland, Ridge Spring, Kitty W. Crumpton, Saluda; three stepdaughters, Vickie Robertson, Trenton, Janet Rowe, Saluda, Joleen Sanders, San Antonio, Texas; a stepson, Hank Robertson, Saluda; two brothers, Bill and Glenn Whitlock, Trenton; a sister, Dorothy Chastek, Silver Springs, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Saluda Shrine Club, 296 Artemus Road, Ward, SC 29166.

David Burgess Wardlaw Sr.

Mr. David Burgess Wardlaw Sr., 76, of Newberry, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Providence Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Inman and the Rev. Barry Brown. Entombment followed in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Craig Newton, Jerry Wright, Robert Lake III, Buck Cockrell, Jackie Swindler and David Bowers. Honorary pallbearers were Thurmond Burnett, David Burnett, Alan Gardner, Corey Brazell, Tookie Oates and all active and retired law enforcement officers.

born Oct. 16, 1934, in McCormick, he was a son of the late David Morrah and Florence Burgess Wardlaw. He was a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church. He served in the S.C. National Guard and retired in 1988 from the S.C. Highway Patrol with over 30 years of service. He became a S.C. State Constable in 1988, a position he held until the present. He also served as a bailiff for Newberry County for four years. In 1985, he was named DMV Employee of the Year for the entire state.

Mr. Wardlaw was a member of the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers Association, the S.C. Troopers Association, the American Association of State Troopers, the Fraternal Order of Police and the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association. He was also a member of the Newberry College Athletic Club and the Edgefield District Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife Georgia Frick Wardlaw; a son, David Burgess Wardlaw Jr.; a stepdaughter, Melody S. Brazell of Newberry; a stepson, Steve N. Shealy of Newberry; sisters, Betty W. Belk of Taylors and Florence W. Buie of Spartanburg; a granddaughter, Erin Taylor Wardlaw of Laurens; step grandchildren, Matt Amerson, Blake Amerson, Lauren Shealy and Rynn Shealy Rogers; and step great-grandchildren, William Rogers and Harper Crosier.

Memorials may be made to Epting Methodist Church, 1401 Milligan Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Elizabeth Yates Chalmers

Elizabeth Yates Chalmers, 90, died at the William Bremen Jewish Home on April 9, 2011.

Elizabeth was called “Buba” all her life after her younger brother, Wilson, was not at first able to say her name. The beauty of her countenance was a reflection of her natural inner beauty and grace. Words frequently used to describe her were “kind” and “sweet”. She was full of life and joy. She had a gift for enjoying the small moments in life. She knew how to slow down and smell the roses and wonder at the beauty around her.

She loved to dance and to play tennis and was wonderful at both. She also loved the beach and Pawley’s Island, in particular. She was very supportive of each of her five children and spent countless hours at music and dance recitals, swim meets, track meets, basketball games, football games, and soccer games.

She graduated from high school at Mount Zion Institute in Winnsboro, SC, and then from Converse College in 1942, where she was the May Queen.

In 1947 she moved with her husband, Dr Rives Chalmers, to Atlanta and remained here the rest of her life. She was active in the community in the following areas: National Association for Mental Health, Project HOPE, Family and Child Service, Auxiliary to the Medical Association of Atlanta, Inc, Auxiliary of Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children, Easter Seals, League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts of America, Margaret Mitchell Elementary School PTA, Northside Garden Club, and was a founding member of the Financial Forum investment club. She sold real estate for several years with Nelson Realty and Harry Norman Realty.

She is mourned and survived by her husband, Dr Rives Chalmers; her children and their spouses, Alice Gordon Chalmers, Ann and Rives Chalmers, Beth and George Thornton, Dana and Pat Pittard, Lisa and David Chalmers; her grandchildren and their spouses, Alex Chalmers, Ashley and John Chalmers, Jennifer Chalmers, Darcey and Paul Mullis, Ben Thornton, Leigh Pittard, Cole and Zack Deming, Brett Jamison, Marshall Chalmers, Elizabeth and Chris McGanity; and her great grandchildren, Avery Chalmers, Aine and Asher Mullis.

Funeral services will be at St Luke’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, April 14, at 1:00 PM. A reception at the church will follow. Interment will be at the Rives family cemetery in Charlottesville, VA. Please send contributions in her name to the national Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.

Sloan Pixley Jr.

Mr. Sloan Pixley Jr., 71, of Johnston, died Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab in Edgefield.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 8, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lewis Burt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Florene Pixley; a stepdaughter, Mary Hill, Saluda; six sons, Larry Pixley, Adam Pixley, Sloan Pixley III and Anthony Pixley, all of Johnston, Alvin Pixley, Aiken, and Randy Pixley, Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Beverly Axen and Catherine Ethridge, both of Johnston; a brother, Melvin Pixley Sr., Johnston; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Amos and Sons Funeral Home, Johnston, was in charge of arrangements.

Eddie Riley Jr.

Mr. Eddie Riley Jr., husband of Bridget Riley, of Mullens Street in North Augusta, died Monday, April 4, 201l at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

His Funeral Mass and Prayer Vigil were celebrated Monday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church, with Father Cherian Thalakulam as celebrant. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Park.

Additional survivors include three sons, Eddie Vincent Riley, Tommy Jerome Riley and Pat Riley; a brother, Tom Riley; and three grandchildren.

Rowland Funeral Home, North Augusta, was in charge of arrangements.

Heyward Rodgers

Mr. Heyward Rodgers, 79, of Speigner Road in Ward, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 8, at 11 a.m. at Ramey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Travis Park cemetery.

born in Saluda County and a son of the late Marion and Ada Bartley Rodgers, he was the husband of Shirley Berry Rodgers. He was a carpenter and a member of St. William’s Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Virginia Bouknight of Ward; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Deloris Rodgers and Hedgeman and Helen Rodgers, all of Saluda; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Allen Rodgers, Bernard Rodgers, Cephas Rodgers and Jake Rodgers.

Memorial may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 404 Batesburg Highway, Saluda, SC 29138 or to St. William’s Catholic Church, 2299 Ridge Spring Highway, Ward, SC 29166.

Barbara A. Williams

Ms. Barbara A. Williams, 59, of Murrah Road in North Augusta, died Thursday, April 7, 2011.

Survivors include a son, Clifford Williams; two sisters, Bessie Williams and Henrietta Coleman; three brothers, Bernard Williams, Ronald (Turmilla) Williams and Victor (Myra) Williams; three grandchildren, Kayden, Clifford Jr. and Chloe; and a host of other relatives.

G.L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary, North Augusta, was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Douglas M. Parker

McCormick, S.C.- Mr. Douglas M. Parker husband of Vivian Anderson Parker died March 28, 2011. He was born May 7, 1947.

After moving to McCormick, SC he joined Shiloh A.M.E. church and served on the usher and trustee board. He was a member of the Bethany Masonic Lodge #415 and Islam Temple #5 Greenwood.

He retired from the SCDOT, McCormick.

Survivors are his father, Mr. Fesor Norman; his wife, Vivian A. Parker of the home; two sons, Tracy (Lillie) Anderson and Derrick (Tara) Anderson; four sisters, Rhonda Clark, Earnestine Zellars, Mary Lazenby, Taffy (Charles) Hopkins; seven brothers, Kenary Clark, Michael Clark and David Clark, Lonnie (Bernice) Norman, Eugene (Judy) Norman, Chauncey (Joy) Norman, Kenneth (Roberta) Norman; five aunts; four uncles; four sister-in-laws; a brother-in-law; seven grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Friday at Shiloh A.M.E. Church in McCormick, with the Pastor Rev. James Louden., III and Rev. R.L. Johnson officiating.

Interment with full Masonic rites was in the church cemetery.

Sally M. Kersey

Mrs. Sally Manor Wallace Kersey, 72, of Moseley Dr., died Sunday April 3, 2011 at her residence.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday April 7, 2011 at 2 P.M. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kersey was born in Augusta, Ga. and was a Methodist. She was a Homemaker.

Survivors include 2 daughters- Patricia Beard, Graniteville, Judy Kersey, Trenton.; 1 Sister- Margaret Wright, Augusta; 10 Grandchildren and 9 Great-Grandchildren.

The family is at the home and will receive friends after the service at the funeral home,

Margaret Helen Payne

Graveside services for Miss Margaret Helen Payne, 94, of Johnston, were held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Mt. of Olives cemetery.

Miss Payne, a native of Johnston, died Saturday, March 19. She was the daughter of the late John Howard and Pauline Lewis Payne. A graduate of Johnston High School in 1933, Miss Payne gave the same salutatory speech her mother had given at her graduation. Before graduating from the University of South Carolina, she attended Coker College. Later she received a library science degree from Peabody. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

Miss Payne was librarian of Conway High School for 25 years and at Wade Hampton in Greenville for 10 years. After retirement she moved back to Johnston and twice served as president of the Retired Teachers' Association of Edgefield County. A member of Johnston First Baptist Church, she served as prayer chairman of the Gleaner's Sunday School Class and program leader of the Jessie Mobley Circle.

Survivors include cousins and a special friend, Betty Jean Taylor.

Hubert W. Anderson

Mr. Hubert W. Anderson, of Edgefield, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 in Edgefield County Hospital.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. in Walker Memorial Park in Augusta, Ga.

Peoples Funeral Home, Augusta, Ga. was in charge of arrangements.

John Quincy Barnes

Funeral services for Mr. John Quincy Barnes, of Edgefield, were held Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Oscar Brown, pastor/eulogist, officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Barnes was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as deacon and as a member of the Usher Board.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Mae Barnes; two brothers, Olin (Ida) Barnes of Edgefield, and Robert Barnes of Jamaica, N.Y.; five sisters, Mary Lou (Willie) Johnson of Washington, D.C., Robin McBride, Louise Perry, and Elease (James) Lloyd, all of Jamaica, N.Y., and Ruby Jean Holmes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters -in-law, Lula Mae Phillips of Flushing, N.Y.; and a host of other relatives.

Johnny Nicholson

Funeral services for Mr. Johnny Nicholson, of Johnston, were held Saturday, Dec. 17, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lewis Burt. Pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He is survived by Thedora Audrey Koti and Rodney Leonard, cousins raised as sisters, Jeanette Staggers, Charlene P. Williams, Mozell Padgett; and cousins.

Addie Smith-Ligons

Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Addie Smith-Ligons, of Ridge Spring, will be announced later. She died at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Joe R. Ligons; sons, Ivory Ligons, Joe R. Ligons Jr. and Toney Ligons; daughters, Wanda J. Elam, Lona C. Padgett and Tonya F. Ligons; brothers, Hazel Smith Jr., James L. Smith and the Rev. Jackie D. Smith; sisters, Bessie Gomillion, Ruthie Ligon, Ruby Smith, Annie L Tanks, Mary Elam and Brenda Smith; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Emma Butler

Johnston, SC Funeral Services for Mrs. Emma Myers Butler, age 101, will be held Sunday, December 19, 2010 at 3 pm at Bland Funeral Home with burial to follow in Mt of Olives cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2- 3 at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mrs. Butler, a native of Lincolnton, Ga. died Friday, December 17, 2010. She was a daughter of the late John Fortson and Lila Gable Myers. Mrs. Butler was a homemaker and a member of Johnston First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters: Barbara (Ralph) Frazier and Carolyn Thomas both of Johnston; Grandchildren: Beverly (Steve) Rich, Aiken; Brenda (Calvin) Childers, Edgefield and Robert Thomas, Johnston; Brother: John Myers, Calhoun Falls; Sisters: Margaret Ivey, Augusta and Laura Jean Holt, West Palm Beach, Fla.; 11 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren; Special Friends: Gloria Mitchell and Mildred Springs.

Memorials may be made to Johnston First Baptist Church, 700 Church Street, Johnston, SC 29832.

B. Joel Bedenbaugh

B. Joel Bedenbaugh, 40, of Edgefield, died Monday December 20, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday December 23, 2010 at 11 A.M. at Antioch Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bedenbaugh was born in Augusta, Ga. and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was the son of B. Asbury and Anna Miller Bedenbaugh. He was a graduate of Strom Thurmond High School and Lander University. He was a former Textile employee of Avondale Mills.

Survivors include his Parents; 1 Sister- Stacie (Shaun) Randall, Gilbert; a niece Jessica Randall and a nephew Jacob Randall.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The family is at the home of his parents and will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 P.M. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.
