DARLINGTON -- Edward C. Jeffords, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. today at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Darlington. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Jeffords was born in Lee County the son of the late Carroll Jeffords and Mary Howell Jeffords Skinner. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired truck driver for Standard Trucking and Green Trucking. Mr. Jeffords attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Weatherford Jeffords of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Anthony "Tony" and Jeannine Jeffords of Hartsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela "Angie" and Darwin Seago, also of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Ashley Michelle Seago, Jennifer Nicole Seago and Caston Hyatt Jeffords; two brothers, Howell (Katherine) Jeffords of Darlington and Alan (Karen) Jeffords of Beckley, W.Va.; and a sister, Mary Carolyn Menasco of Darlington.

Rev. Donald Lee Coley
AHOSKIE, N.C. -- Rev. Donald Lee Coley of Powellsville, N.C., died Monday, Jan. 22, 2002 in South Carolina.
He was born in Bertie County, N.C., and was a minister and educator. He was a member of St. John Second Baptist church in Ahoskie, N.C. He was a field worker and member of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, a member of the West Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association, Palestine Masonic Lodge, Florence Chapter of the American Heart Association and Youth Services Advisory Comm.
Survivors include two sons, Corey Freeman of Raleigh, N.C., and Shon Coley of Baltimore; a daughter, Natasha Shenee' Coley of Powellsville, N.C.; mother, Louise Mitchell of Baltimore; four sisters, his twin, Diana Slade of Cofield, N.C., Dorsena Palmer, Betty Bonds and Kendra Coley; 13 brothers, Richard Coley, Ronnie Coley, William Murphy, Clay Perry, Larry Wiggins, Michael Sims, Robert "Buddy" Grant, Eric Coley, Roland Coley, Ernest Coley, Marcus Coley, Alonzo Coley and Kendall Coley.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at Hertford County High School, Ahoskie, N.C., with the Rev. Patrick H. Young officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Ahoskie, N.C., directed by Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc.
H. Franklin Burroughs
CONWAY -- H. Franklin Burroughs, 39, of Timber Ridge Road, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002.
Mr. Burroughs was born in Jacksonville, Fla., a son of Bernard B. and Joanne Chadwick Burroughs.
He was a member of Jamestown Baptist Church and a graduate of Conway High School. Mr. Burroughs also graduated from Coastal Carolina University and University of South Carolina School of Law. He was a member and former chairman of the Coastal Carolina Board of Trustees. Mr. Burroughs was owner and operator of Burroughs Law Firm in Conway and was a member of the American and the South Carolina Bar Associations. He was also on the Board at the Waccamaw Youth Center.
Surviving in addition to his parents of Conway are his wife, Carol Boatwright Burroughs, and a son, Andrew Franklin Burroughs of Conway.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 from Hillcrest cemetery with the Rev. Robbin King officiating.
Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret C. Cooper Rogers
GALIVANTS FERRY -- Mrs. Margaret Cribb Cooper Rogers, 61, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Centenary United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rogers was born June 28, 1940 in Marion County, a daughter of the late William Warren Cribb and the late Bertha Ida Cribb Cribb. Mrs. Rogers was a homemaker.
Surviving Mrs. Rogers are her children, Stevie Cooper of Galivants Ferry, Debbie Matthews of Florence, Janice Hardee of Florence, Darhyl Cooper of Galivants Ferry, Sarah Sullivan of Conway, William Cooper of Galivants Ferry, Timothy Cooper of Galivants Ferry and Derrick Cooper of Galivants Ferry; 21 grandchildren; a brother, Harry Cribb of Loris; and four sisters, Mary Ellen Richardson of Conway, Virginia Tyler of Bolivia, N.C., Velma Barnhill of High Point, N.C., and Elnita Pridgen of Tabor City, N.C.
Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by three daughters, Jackie, Joan and Joann Cooper.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Betty Joyce Smith
LATTA -- Memorial services for Betty Joyce Smith will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002 in Latta Baptist Church with entombment in Evergreen cemetery Mausoleum.
Mrs. Smith, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 26 in McLeod Regional Medical Center.
born in Troy, N.C., June 17, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Alberta and Elgie Smith. She was a member of Latta Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Graham Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Vickie S. Watson of Latta; sisters, Blanche Kaple of Albemarle, N.C., Bernadine Hitchcock of Richmond, Va., Helen Howell of Troy, N.C., and Frances McRae of Mt. Gilead, N.C.; brothers, Alvin Lassiter, and Larry Lassiter, both of Troy, N.C., and Allen Lassiter of Mt. Gilead, N.C.; grandchildren, George (Tripp) Watson, U.S. Navy of California, Gilbert Smith Jr. and Bradley Smith, both of Latta; and sister-in-law, Delores Smith of Latta.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her son, Gilbert Smith; brother, Tommy Lassiter; and sister, Clara Lee DeLotto.

Betty 'Bett' P. Oliver
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Betty "Bett" P. Oliver, 74, born in Whitmire and a resident of Jacksonville for 50 years, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2002.
She was a member of First Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther S. Oliver Jr., and her son, Luther S. Oliver III.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Damie Bush (Mitch) and Libby Lazar (Jim); sister, Elizabeth "Lib" Meggs (Wallace) of Florence; and grandson, Sean Oliver.
A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Greenlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32207.
James Harold Hodge
CHESTERFIELD -- Mr. James Harold Hodge, 56, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today in Shiloh United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hodge was born in Hartsville, a son of the late James Newton and Flora Jane Elizabeth Keith Hodge. He was a retired Foreman with Sonoco Products Co. and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Hodge was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where he served as former Chairman of Trustees and member of the cemetery Committee.
Survivors are his wife, Susan Gaskins Hodge of the home; a son, James Douglas Hodge of Columbia; two daughters, Sherry Hodge Cross and husband, Howard, of Florence and Christel Hodge of Chesterfield; a precious granddaughter, Catherine Elizabeth Cross of Florence; and a special friend, Daniel T. Davidson of Chesterfield.
Mr. Hodge was preceded in death by two brothers, B.E. Hodge and Johnny Carroll Johnson.

Vermelle 'Peggy' Hill
TIMMONSVILLE -- Vermelle "Peggy" Sansbury Hill, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, after an illness.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Lake Swamp Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto Street, Florence.
Mrs. Hill was born July 6, 1920 in Darlington County the daughter of the late Herbert and Elma Jordan Sansbury. She was a member of Lake Swamp Baptist Church and retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 33 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Surviving is a son, Donald Carl Hill of Timmonsville.
Lerlean Thompson Hines
FLORENCE -- Friends and relatives are invited to attend the funeral services for Mrs. Lerlean "Mattie" Thompson Hines, 12 noon, Tuesday at Mt. Zion AME Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. She died on Jan. 22, 2002, in Richmond, Calif., after an illness.
Mrs. Hines was born in Florence County, a daughter of Florena Hennigan and David Thompson. She attended the public schools of Florence County. She was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church, where she served faithfully until her health declined.
Left to cherish precious memories are three daughters, Bertha H. Wilson of Florence, Alice Robinson of Richmond, Calif. and Clara Hines of San Francisco, Calif.; two sons, Roney L. Hines of Reseda, Calif. and James Hines of Los Angeles, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ada Gregg Thompson, nieces, nephews and host of other relatives and friends.

Jannette James Davis
DARLINGTON -- Jannette James Davis, 82, of 2117 Indian Branch Road, died Wednesday, January 2, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2002 at 3 PM in the Indian Branch United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Indian Branch cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Louie E. and Oliva Mae Watts James. She was a member of the Indian Branch United Methodist Church, the Lottie McSwain Sunday School Class and the Indian Branch Ladies Aid. Mrs. Davis was married
to the late Cleveland M. Davis, who preceded her in death in 1972. She was retired from Lazy Boy of Florence.
Survivors include one son; Cleveland Marshall (Linda) Davis of Darlington, four daughters; Marlene Cook, Shirley Mattox, and Annie Joy, all of Darlington, and Margie (Ernest) Hill of Florence, three sisters; Valerie Sturgeon of Darlington, Grace Shoemake of Hartsville, and Myrtis Johnson of Columbia, one brother; Luddrick (Faye) James of Ridge Springs, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, January 5, 2002 from 3 - 5 PM.

Lawrence Boyd Miles
SCRANTON -- Lawrence Boyd Miles, 72, of 1712 S. Friendfield Rd., died Monday morning Feb. 18, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside cemetery off U.S. Highway 378, near Scranton. Burial will follow, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Mr. Miles was born in Florence County, a son of the late Boyd L. and Margaret "Lizzie" Cox Miles.
He is preceded in death by a son, Tim K. Miles.
Surviving are his wife, Zulene Miles of the home; two sons, Glenn (Sandra) Miles and Harris M. Miles both of Scranton; a daughter, Jean Miles of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Harriett Hoover and Hazel Woolvin, both of Florida, Ruth Miles of Scranton and Connie Pierce of Florence; a brother, Richard Miles of Scranton; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Virginia M. Mathis
MANNING -- Virginia Webb Mathis, 80, formerly of Timmonsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 in a Sumter hospital. She was born in Florence County a daughter of the late James Frank and Pearl Hudson Webb. She was educated in Florence County school and received her training as an LPN at McLeod Infirmary where she was employed for a number of years. She was a member of Santee Baptist Church and the Garden Club. Her husband was the late John W. "Junior" Mathis Jr.
Surviving are a son, John William (Yana) Mathis III of Manning; three daughters, Jenny Lynn (Will) Mann of Chapel Hill, N.C., Gay (Warren) Jeffords of Lamar and Wendy (Dan) Oates of Simpsonville; a half sister, Molly Mason of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at Byrd cemetery in Timmonsville.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Jeffords, 111 Warren Ave., Lamar.
