MULLINS -- Dorothy Elizabeth Harrelson Shepard, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at Marion County Medical Center.
She was born in Marion County, a daughter of the late George Rembert and Cora Bryant Harrelson. She worked as Food Service Director for Marion County Schools. She was the wife of the late Vermil Shepard and a member of Macedonia Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Meares Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Frey officiating. Burial will follow in Cedardale cemetery, Mullins. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Meares Funeral Home.
Mrs. Shepard is survived by a daughter, Betsy Jolly of Darlington; a sister, Betty Lewallen of Timmonsville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Shepard was predeceased by two daughters, Dianne McRae and Linda Shepard.
Coolidge Boyd Calcutt
PROSPECT -- Coolidge Boyd Calcutt, 78, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 in a Florence hospital.
Mr. Calcutt was born in Pamplico, a son of the late Boyd E. Calcutt and the late Bertha Hanna Calcutt. He was a retired carpenter, a member of Beulah Free Will Baptist Church and attended Hanna schools.
Surviving are his wife, Alberta Humphries Calcutt of the home; son, Randall (Linda) Calcutt of Johnsonville; daughter, Brenda (Herbert) Dukes of Prospect; grandchildren, Brian (Destiny) Calcutt and Hope C. Jones, both of Johnsonville; great-grandchildren, Paige and Makenna Jones and Trinity Calcutt; and sisters, Elise Lawrimore of Hemingway, Myrtice Humphries of Lake City, Myrtle Moore of Turbeville, Shirley Poston and Nora Bazen, both of Pamplico.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today in Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway with burial in Beulah Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Prospect-Hanna cemetery Fund, 320 Half Moon Road, Lake City, SC 29560.
Thelma Ward Allen
WASHINGTON, N.C. -- Mrs. Thelma Ward Allen, 96, a former resident of 526 West Second Street, died Sunday, Feb. 24 at Britthaven of Washington.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Brown Chapel of St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. William J. Bradbury officiating.
C. Swanson Graves III, Val Johnson, Jimmy G. Leach, Philip Sterling, Shay Trainer and Richard Pfeiffer.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mount Hope cemetery in Florence.
Mrs. Allen was born on Oct. 9, 1905, in Darlington and was the daughter of the late Catherine Woodrow Ward and Chris Evans Ward. She graduated from St. John's High School in Darlington, attended Winthrop College and taught school in Lugoff for three years prior to her marriage in 1926 to Vernon Harol Allen, who preceded her in death in 1985. They made their home in Florence and Litchfield Beach for thirty-six years before moving to Washington, N.C. in 1972.
Mrs. Allen was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where she was active in the Altar Guild and instrumental in the design and creation of the needlepoint cushions that adorn the church and chapel altars. She was also editor and publisher of St. Peter's Episcopal Church Women's cook book, "Keys to the Kitchen". She was a member of the Crescite Book Club and the DAR.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Allen Winfield of Washington, N.C.; twin granddaughters, Emily Winfield Bondy and her husband Paul Bondy of Baton Rouge, La. and Catherine Winfield Pfeiffer and her husband Richard Pfeiffer of Washington, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Courtney and Malone Bondy, Anna, Charles and Emily Pfeiffer.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, four brothers, three sisters and her son-in-law, William Bernard Winfield.
The family appreciates the love and concerns of friends and suggests that memorial contributions perpetuate her memory with memorials to the St. Peter's Episcopal Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 985, Washington, N.C. 27889 or the charity of one's choice.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter at 527 West Main Street.
Arrangements are by Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington, N.C.
James O. Lewis
NICHOLS -- Mr. James Oliver Lewis, 65, husband of Mary Frances Hattaway Lewis, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Bryant and the Rev. Ray Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Gapway Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mr. Lewis was born Dec. 25, 1936 in Dillon County, a son of the late James N. and Fancy Snipes Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a supervisor with Carmichael Enterprises. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Lewis attended Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Lewis in addition to his wife of the home are a son, Phillip Wayne Lewis and his wife Lisa of Nichols; three grandchildren, Curtis Lewis, Blake Ellis and Summer Ellis; a brother, Gene Lewis of Sumter; and seven sisters, Cathrine Tyler of Loris, Mary Saville of Travelers Rest, Lucille King of Nichols, Vashti Meekins of Dillon, Wilma Howard of West Columbia, Judy Sawyer of Columbia and Lynn Hardin of Dillon.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Georgia P. Martin
MULLINS -- Mrs. Georgia Plum Gasque Martin, 83, widow of Sherwood Julian Martin, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Jacobs and the Rev. Paul Gasque officiating. Burial will follow in Rehoboth United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Martin was born Jan. 27, 1919 in Horry County, a daughter of the late Alex Canie Gasque and the late Mary Eliza Thompkins Gasque. Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and attended Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Martin are five sons, A.J. Martin and his wife Peggy of Little River, Freeman Martin and his wife Lula of Mullins, Julian Martin and his wife Linda of Mullins, Robert Martin and his wife Sheila of Mullins and Roy Martin and his wife Edna of Barnwell; five daughters, Mildred Duncan and her husband Lacy of Eutawville, Sarah Zeigler and her husband Walter of Elloree, Faye Lewis and her husband Dusty of Lugoff, Wanda Moore of Latta and Bonnie Carter and her husband Billy of Latta; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Lindsey Gasque of Conway and Gracie Martin of Galivants Ferry.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Wattie Hampton Price Jr
DILLON -- Services for Wattie Hampton Price Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2002 in Dillon First Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Mr. Price died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 in McLeod Regional Medical Center.
born in Dillon County he was the son of Wattie Hampton Price Sr. and the late Lula Belle Horne Price. He was a member of Dillon First Baptist Church and the Masonic Mackey Lodge, and was retired from SC Farm Bureau and a U.S. Marine veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Janet B. Price of Dillon; daughter, Barbara (Peter) Busse of Myrtle Beach; son, Ray (Neilly) Hampton Price of Dillon; sister, Brenda Britt of Smithfield, N.C.; brother, Troy Price of Hamer; father, Wattie Hampton Price Sr. of Smithfield, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.
James Ben Sellers
FLORENCE -- James Ben Sellers, 53, husband of Lender Harper Sellers, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at his residence after an illness. born April 28, 1948, in Marion, he was the son of Mildred Floyd Sandford and the late James Boyd Sellers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Florence National cemetery.
He retired from La-Z-Boy after 28 years of service, and was of the Holiness Faith and attended Church of God of Prophecy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by two sons, James Ben Sellers Jr. and fiancee', Kristi of Florence, Michael Jay Sellers and wife, Kimberly of Beaufort; two daughters, Tammy Raines and husband, Frank, Amy Lance and husband, Mike; three brothers, Danny Sellers, Harold Dean Sellers, and Eugene Sellers; a sister, Carolyn Faye Knotts; and one grandson, Frank Raines Jr., all of Florence.
Funeral services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.
Johnnie McNeil Sr.
LAMAR -- Funeral services for Johnnie McNeil Sr. will be at 2 p.m. today in the Church of Christ in Lamar. Burial will take place in the Plaza Memorial Gardens. Professional services are provided by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Lamar.
Mr. McNeil died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002. He was born in the Lamar Community one of four children of the late Dan and Almeta Lucas McNeil. He worked at Spaulding Elementary for 15 years. After leaving Spaulding, he worked as a school crossing guard for several years.
Mr. McNeil was a lifetime member of Church of Christ where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include a daughter, Nettie (Richard) McQuillar of Effingham; three sons, Johnnie (Louise) McNeil Jr. and Earl (Lena) McNeil, both of Lamar, and Willie (Nadine) Evans of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister, Elizabeth Mingo of Carthage, N.C.; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mattie Brown Barefoot
HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Mattie Brown Barefoot, 87, widow of Boyd David Barefoot, who died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 from John Wesley Methodist Church. The Rev. John C. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Barefoot was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Jessie Brown and Martha Outlaw.
Surviving are four daughters, LaFaye Gainey and Lila Johnson, both of Hartsville, Martha Morris of Florence and Linda Johnson of Greenville; a sister, Sarah Johnson of Hartsville; a brother, J.C. Outlaw of Buffalo, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Crowley.
Memorials may be made to John Wesley Methodist Church, 317 Forest Hills Drive, Hartsville, S.C. 29550.
Clifford R. Gee
FLORENCE -- Memorial service for the late Clifford R. Gee will be at 1 p.m. today in Backus Funeral Home Chapel.
He was the son of the late Azell and Corine Brown Gee of Florence County, where he also received his formal education.
The family resides at 1404 Douglas St. Ext., Florence.
Robert McBride Jr.
EUTAWVILLE -- Robert Lee "Mac" McBride Jr., 70, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 after an illness.
Mr. McBride was born in Burlington, N.C., a son of the late Robert Lee and Ethel Margaret Hipp McBride. He was a member of United Church of Christ. Mr. McBride was a veteran in the United States Navy serving in the Vietnam War and receiving many awards during his career to include the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Certificate (Third Award) , Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal, and a member of L. Mendal Rivers Branch No. 50 Fleet Reserve Association. He was a former member of Carolina Masonic Lodge No. 375 A.F.M. and presently a member of Vance Lodge A.F.M., S.C., Omar Temple and the Omar "Imps" in Florence.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Hutchinson McBride of Eutawville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ron (Sue) McBride of Florence, Tim (Joy) McBride of Charleston, Wayne McBride of Charleston, and Wayne (Cheryl) Flowers of Summerville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan (Randy) Pullery of Goose Creek, and Linda (Randy) Knight of North Charleston; a sister, Hilda Shaver of Salisbury, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Greenridge Road Chapel.
The family will receive friends today from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Greenville Unit, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29506.
