William Earl Wingate

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for William Earl Wingate will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 in the Church of Christ in Lamar. Burial will take place in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery. Professional services are provided by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.

Mr. Wingate died Monday, Feb. 11. He was born in the rural community of Darlington County. He was one of 13 children of the late Jackson and Sammie Kelly Wingate.

Mr. Wingate was first a member of St. John United Methodist Church. He was married to the late Ada Bell Johnson Wingate and together they became members of the Church of Christ of Lamar.

Survivors include four sisters, Emily Mayshack of Hartsville, Wilhelmina Coleman of Jamaica, N.Y., Ruth Graham of New York City and Sammie Allen of Dayton, Ohio; and four brothers, Preston (Helen) Wingate and Harmon (Calotis) Wingate, both of Bronx, N.Y., Pervell (Beulah) Wingate of Clinton, Md., and Kelly (Denice) Wingate of Summerville.

Brewster Amos

FLORENCE -- Brewster Amos, 63, of Florence died Friday, February 15, 2002. born May 7, 1938, in Russell County, Virginia, he was the son of the late William Henry Amos and Virginia Ellen Breeding Amos. He was the husband of Ella Kiser Owen Amos.

A Memorial Service will be Monday, February 18, 2002 at 2:00pm in the Cain-Poston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. W.L. Collins officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Amos Family cemetery in Cleveland, Virginia.

Mr. Amos was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a retired brick mason.

In addition to his wife, Ella, of the home, he is survived by one son, Jason Todd Amos; two brothers, Bradley J. Amos and James A. Amos; and one sister, Josephine Parks.

Services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.

Rick R. Evans

GREENVILLE -- Rick Rollins Evans, 51, of 526 Westcliffe Way died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002.

Husband of Nancy Pearson Evans, he was born in Florence the son of Lola McAllister Evans of Lake City and the late Clarence Evans.

Mr. Evans earned his Master's degree in Engineering at Clemson University and was a Structural Engineer with O'Neal Inc. He was a member of the SC Society of Professional Engineers and a member of Berea First Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Andrew Nathaniel Evans of the home and sisters, Bobbie Jean Adkins of Charleston and Renee Sharp of Oklahoma.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Berea First Baptist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the residence.

Rev. Orion William Perrell

FLORENCE -- Rev. Orion William Perrell, 93, widower of Charlotte Rolston Perrell, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Feb. 15, 2002.

Rev. Perrell was born in Concord, N.C., on May 4, 1908. He is predeceased by his parents, Walter Luther and Martha Zeta Swearngan Perrell; two brothers, Arland Perrell and Clyde Perrell; and a sister, Lena P. Padgett.

A graduate of Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary, Rev. Perrell served the Lord as Presbyterian minister in the following locations: Williamsville, Va.; Gate City, Va.; Burlington, N.C.; Buckhannon, W.Va.; Collierstown, Va.; Waxhaw, N.C.; Leaksville, N.C.; and Effingham.

Rev. Perrell is survived by a sister, Eliza P. Matthews of Asheville, N.C.; a son, Orion R. (Mona) Perrell of Newberry; and a daughter, Zeta P. Isgett of Florence. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Eric R. (Rhonda) Perrell of Prosperity, William C. Perrell of Newberry, Amy I. (Kerry) Matthews, Beth I. (Harrell) Poston, Cheryl I. (Steve) Mims and Dana I. (Kenn) Croft, all of Effingham. His seven great-grandchildren are Ashley Matthews, Phillip Matthews, Woody Poston, Alex Poston, Kelsey Croft, Kayla Croft and Lance Perrell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Waters-Powell Funeral Home in Florence and at other times at 2109-A Sanderling Drive. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at Effingham Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow at Mount Hope cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 2350 W. Lucas St., Florence, SC 29501; to Crossnore School, Inc., P.O. Box 249, Crossnore, NC 28616; or to the charity of one's choice.

Margaret Ward Branham Cain

BISHOPVILLE -- Margaret Ward Branham Cain, 61, widow of Jerry D. Cain, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 at the Kershaw County Medical Center.

born in Lee County, she was a daughter of Geneva Watkins Ward and the late John W. Ward.

Mrs. Cain was a Baptist and a retired nurse.

Surviving are her mother of Bishopville; three daughters, Rose Blackwell of Bishopville, Becky Jenkinson of Lugoff and Theresa Walters of Folly Beach; and four grandchildren, Tracey Gladden, Bobby Blackwell, Ann Jenkinson and Will Jenkinson.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in the Chapel of the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. T.W. Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in Piedmont cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at the funeral home and other times at the home, 105 Ridge St., Bishopville.

Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 487, Bishopville, S.C. 29010 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Rosa Bell Bennett

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Rosa Bell Bennett will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place in Greenlawn cemetery. Professional services are provided by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.

Mrs. Bennett died Tuesday, Feb. 12. She was born in the Bishopville farming community of Lee County. She was one of 14 children of the late Harmon and Carrie Timmons Black.

Mrs. Bennett was first married to the late Abraham Richardson Sr. From this union, two children were born. After his death she was wed to the late Willie James Bennett in 1950. From that union seven children were born. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Senior and the Gospel Choir.

Survivors include six sons, Abraham Richardson, Alphonso (Norma Jean) Richardson and Willie Bennett, all of Hartsville, James (Janie) Bennett and Bobby (Cleo) Bennett, both of Baltimore, and Charles Bennett of Sumter; and three daughters, Bernice Bennett of Rock Hill, Bernice Bennett and Denise Bennett, both of Hartsville.

Mary Effie Nettles Owens

HEMINGWAY -- Mary Effie Nettles Owens, 72, widow of Alford Odis Owens, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 in a Conway nursing center.

Mrs. Owens was born in Johnsonville, a daughter of the late Charlie Givens Nettles and the late Carrie Olivia Marlow Nettles. She was a homemaker, a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and attended Johnsonville schools.

Surviving are four sons, Jimmy Owens of Johnsonville, Merrill Owens, David Owens and Barry Owens, all of Hemingway; two daughters, Mary Ellen Lawrimore of Hemingway and Vivian McClain of Orangeburg; a brother, Robert Nettles of Florence; five sisters, Lottie Mae Doe of St. Petersburg, Fla., Eulee Altman of Johnsonville, Dorothy Rogers of Garden City, Evelyn Owens of Hemingway and Joan Tisdale of Kingstree; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, will be in the church cemetery.

Sam Joe Kennedy

WYNNEFIELD, Pa. -- Funeral services for Mr. Sam Joe Kennedy of Wynnefield, PA, formerly of Effingham, SC, were conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 12, 20002 at Gospel Temple Baptist Church. Interment at Chelten Hill cemetery. He died on February 7 at Lankenau Hospital after a difficult illness.

Mr. Kennedy, 74, was a retired brick layer and avid Churchman. Sam moved to Philadelphia in 1953 to continue his vocation as a brick mason. He was also following his relationship with his future bride, Missouri Eagleton. They married on March 20, 1954 and were blessed with four sons, Joseph, Harvey, Gregory and Mark.

In February 1956, Sam and his family joined Gospel Temple Baptist Church, serving as trustee, deacon and member of the prayer band. He also sang on and supervised the # 2 Choir. In the latter part of 1999, Deacon Sam Joe Kennedy became Deacon Emeritus, a special honor bestowed by Rev. Dr. Daniel T. Black, his pastor.

Having been employed as a brick layer at several companies including John B. Kelly and Anastasi, Sam acquired his own clients. Sam will always be remembered for his building and contracting skills. There are many edifices that will stand in tribute to him throughout the area.

Sam leaves to cherish his memories: His loving and devoted wife, Missouri; his daughter, Brenda Ervin of Effingham; his four sons, Joseph of Wilkes, Barre., Harvey, Gregory, and Mark; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wilson, Isaiah and Julius, all of Florence; and three sisters, Eulila Johnson, Eugenia Hyman of Pamplico, SC and Neverseen Hines of Lamar, SC.

Marie Ellis Clendenin

FLORENCE -- Marie Ellis Clendenin, 80, of Florence and formerly of Buchanan County, Va., died Friday evening, Feb. 15, 2002 in a Florence hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Singletons Funeral Home Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va., with the Rev. Jack Keen officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. The pallbearers will be grandsons and friends.

Mrs. Clendenin was born in Buchanan County, Va., on April 29, 1921 a daughter of the late Arthur and Melinda Ellis of Vansant, Va. She was a member of the Holiness Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Elbert F. Clendenin, who died Aug. 4, 1979.

Survivors include her three sons, Charles A. (Gerry) Clendenin, A. Forrest (Sandy) Clendenin and Wesley G. (Brenda) Clendenin, all of Florence; a brother, Claude V. Ellis of Carterville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Mrs. Clendenin will be taken to Singletons Funeral Home in Virginia where friends may call Monday evening.

Thelma J. Beasley

LAMAR -- Thelma Joye Beasley, 93, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.

Mrs. Beasley, wife of the late Gerald Beasley, was born in Darlington County the daughter of the late J.Z. and Essie Carter Beasley. She was a teacher for 33 years and was active in many community organizations. Mrs. Beasley was a resident of Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence since 1998 and a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jerry (Ann) Beasley of Blythewood; a daughter, Mrs. Joe (Janelle) Sinnett of Columbia; four grandchildren, Dr. John G. Beasley Jr. of Columbia, Joye Harpe of Columbia, Commander J. Christopher Sinnett of Exeter, N.H., and Vicki L. Sinnett of Arlington, Va.; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Lamar United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069 or to the charity of one's choice.

John W. 'Johnnie' DeWitt Sr.

FREEPORT, Fla. -- John W. "Johnnie" DeWitt Sr., 79, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 in Twin City's Hospital in Niceville, Fla., after an illness.

Mr. DeWitt was born in Pamplico, a son of the late Cordie W. and Zelma Farley Haines DeWitt. He was retired from the U.S. Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer. Mr. DeWitt served on the USS Tennessee, one week prior to Pearl Harbor and then was on the Marblehead. During World War II, he served in the Pacific, North Atlantic, Mediterranean and also the Normandy Invasion. He served in Korea, Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and in the Gulf of Tonkin during Vietnam. Prior to retirement, he was Chief Master of Arms of the Anti Submarine Warfare Base in San Diego.

Surviving are a daughter, Dawn Celeste Bellanca of Arcadia, Calif.; a son, John W. "Jack" DeWitt Jr. of Florence; a grandson, Martin Connaly of Los Angeles; a brother, Willys James "Jimmy" DeWitt of Lake City; three half-sisters, Marilyn D. (Lenair) Altman and Sybil D. (Jimmy) Bennett, both of Georgetown, and Nora D. (Johnny) Cates of Dallas; and a companion, Barbara Still of Freeport, Fla.

Mr. DeWitt was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn Foster DeWitt; his second wife, Carey P. DeWitt; three sisters, Dorothy Daniels, Mollie Brown and Kitty Hyman; a brother, Charles Beale "CB" DeWitt; and stepmother, Lenora DeWitt Huggins.

Graveside service will be at noon Friday, Feb. 15 in Mt. Elim Free Will Baptist Church cemetery, Pamplico, with full Military Honors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Florence Area Humane Society, 1007 Stockade Drive, Florence, SC 29506 or to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
