LAMAR -- Walter Earl "Bud" Carter Jr., 68, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 in his residence after an illness. Graveside funeral services will be 4 p.m. today in Lamar cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Carter was born in Darlington County the son of Edelle King Carter and the late Walter Earl Carter. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked in banking for a number of years. Mr. Carter was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church and was an active Bridge and tennis player.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Lamar are his wife, Sylvia Lewis Carter of the home; two sons, Mark Carter of Florence and Scott Carter of Lamar; a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Carla) Mann of Florence; three grandchildren, Megan Carter, Matthew Carter and Kirsten Mann; and two sisters, Mrs. John (Joanne) McKissick of Summerville and Mrs. Marvin (Linda) Slaughter of Florence.
Memorial may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
Edna B. Thompson
DARLINGTON -- Edna Brewer Thompson, 71, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 in her residence after an illness. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Fairmont, N.C., the daughter of the late Roy and Mamie Smith Brewer. She was educated in Florence County schools, was a homemaker and owner of a ceramic shop. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and was a Reach Out Leader and member of the Winsome Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her husband, Billy A. Thompson of Darlington; two sons, David Thompson of the home and Gordon (Margie) Thompson of Darlington; two daughters, Terri Foster and Debbie (Glenn) Hanna, both Darlington; four grandsons, Wayne Thompson, Neel Thompson, Billy Hanna and Rusty Foster; a great-grandchild, Blake Thompson; and two brothers, Charles "Buddy" Brewer of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Earl Brewer of Columbia. Also surviving is a special friend, Annette Baldwin.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by twins, daughter Sherry Thompson and son Terry Thompson; brothers, Bill Brewer and Bobby Brewer; and sisters, Marie Brewer, Louise McManus and Elizabeth B. Scarborough.
Serving as pallbearers are Rusty Foster, Wayne Thompson, Neel Thompson, J.J. June, Wesley Watford and Jonathan Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Glenn and Debbie Hanna, 728 Watson St., Darlington.
Brandon Coker
LYMAN -- Brandon McKinley Coker, 16, of 437 Amberlea Drive, Lyman died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 in Greenville Memorial Hospital following a 26-month battle with leukemia.
born in Pasadena, Calif., he was the son of Raymond L. Coker II and Melissa Durham Coker of the home. He was a junior at James F. Byrnes High School where he had been a member of the cross country, track and soccer teams. He also was an active member of Duncan First Baptist Church.
Also surviving are two brothers, Ryan L. Coker and Bradley M. Coker, both of the home; his paternal grandparents, Sarah Solesbee Coker and Raymond L. Coker of Lyman; maternal grandparents, Nancy Tumlin Turner and Jerry Turner of Lyman; his maternal great-grandmothers, Bessie Tumlin and Lucia, both of Easley; two uncles, Chris Durham and Michael Coker, both of Lyman; and an aunt, Leah Coker Gowan of Lyman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at Duncan First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Roger Clark, the Rev. Chet Andrews and the Rev. Scott Smith. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville.
Active pallbearers will be D.J. Wetzel, Daniel Hautamaki, Zachery Johnson, Cody Sanders, David Stancil, Justin White, Matthew Gowan, Jonathan Marr, Sam Heller and Matthew Lyda. Honorary pallbearers will be Coach Eric Cummings and Coach Mike Kinally leading the members of the cross country and soccer teams of James F. Byrnes High School.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brandon Coker Memorial Fund, c/o Duncan First Baptist Church, 103 E. Main St., Duncan, S.C. 29334 or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Office of Donor Services, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, N.Y. 10605.

George Victor Jefferson
TIMMONSVILLE -- Funeral service for Mr. George Victor Jefferson will be 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 in Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sansbury cemetery directed by Bacote-Eaddy Funeral Home of Timmonsville.
Mr. Jefferson died Monday, Feb. 4.
He was born in Florence County a son of the George and Mamie McDowell Jefferson. He attended the public schools of Timmonsville and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Benedict College in 1977. He was employed by Florence School District 4.
Survivors include nine siblings, Rebecca (Edward) Cooper, Jeanette (Roosevelt) Nettles, Judy (Charles) Lamback, Tyrone (Mary) Jefferson, Justus (Martha) Jefferson, Amelia Allen, Dennis (Vanessa) Jefferson, Toney (Chinora) Jefferson and Derrick (Janice) Jefferson; a special friend Daisy Martin; many other relatives and friends.
Harry M. Smith
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Harry M. Smith, 64, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Smith was medically retired as NCO from the U.S. Air Force and retired manager from the U.S. Postal service and J.C. Penney. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 763 Scottish Rites of Freemasonary and Kerbela Temple in Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Parnell Smith; father, Grover Smith; and brothers, McKeever and Donald (Bo) Smith.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Sharon Smith, a loving daughter, Johnna Ward, a loving special grandson, Kevin E. Ward, and son-in-law, Robert M. Ward, all of Knoxville; sisters, Gertrude Parnell and Jackie Sanderson of Lamar; brother, Samuel James Smith (Jimmy) of Candor, N.C.; a special sister-in-law, Sarah Smith of Candor, N.C.; a special brother-in-law, Harry Parnell of Lamar; and a half-brother, Johnny Bell of Darlington.
Graveside service will be noon Monday, Feb. 11 at Tennessee Veterans cemetery in Knoxville, with full military honors by the East Tennessee Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Lynnhurst Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 2300 W. Adair Drive, Knoxville, TN 37918.
Arlington Scipio
FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mr. Arlington "Gray Fox" "Sip" Scipio will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Savannah Grove Baptist Church. He died on Jan. 24, 2002, in his residence after an illness.
Mr. Scipio was born in Florence County, a son of Evans and Lula Mae Benjamin Scipio Jr. He attended the public schools of Florence County. He was a self-employed brickmason.
Survivors include two daughters, Cathy H. Gee, of Effingham and Sharon D. Indrago of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren; sister, Sandra Members of Rochester, N.Y.; brother, Emory Scipio of Ridgecrst, Calif.; aunts, uncles, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Clarence 'Yammy Yok' Peterson
TIMMONSVILLE --Funeral services for Mr. Clarence "Yammy Yok" Peterson will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at Macedonia Holiness Church, Carterville. Rev. Daman Thompson, pastor, directed by Bowman's Funeral Home.
Mr. Clarence Peterson was born on Dec. 25, 1945 to the late Mr. Bennie Peterson Sr. and the late Mrs. Julia Fullard Peterson. He departed this life on Jan. 31.
He attended the public schools of Darlington County. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Methodist Church in Timmonsville. He was employed by the Warr Farm as a farmer.
He was joined in holy matrimony to Miss Estell Jackson on July 18, 1967. To this union three children were born.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Estelle Peterson, one sister, Reaner Bell Johnson, one brother, Bennie Peterson Jr., and a father-in-law, Julian Jackson.
He leaves to cherish his memories; a devoted wife, Mrs. Estelle Peterson; one daughter, Andora Peterson; one son, Bobby Louis Peterson all of the home. Five sisters, Lena Mae (Raymond) Rose of Florence, Mildred (Jerry) Durant and Mae Alice (Ricky) Cooper both of Lamar, Nora Peterkin and Sarah Frances (Robert) Efford of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., one brother-in-law, four sisters-in-law, a very special aunt, four grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
W. Darren Owens
LAKE CITY -- W. Darren Owens, 33, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002 in a Lake City hospital. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Williams Hill Original Freewill Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Owens was born in Florence, a son of Wendell B. Owens and Sandra Williams Owens. He was retired from Wellman Industries as a lab technician.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta S. Owens of the home; daughter, Heather Louise Owens of the home; parents, Wendell B. Owens and Sandra W. Owens, both of Hemingway; two brothers, Danny Owens and Jamie Owens, both of Hemingway; sister, Kimberly Howell of Johnsonville; maternal grandmother, Freeda Williams of Hemingway; paternal grandmother, Mary Katrina Owens of Hemingway.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Buie M. Gaskins
LAKE CITY -- Mr. Buie M. Gaskins, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at his residence after an illness.
Mr. Gaskins was born in Florence County, a son of the late Otley and Ella Cockfield Gaskins. He was a retired farmer and member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was a Mason and member of the Vox Community Lodge.
Survivors include: His wife, Essie Lee Humphries Gaskins of Lake City; a son, Johnny L. (Annie Sue) Gaskins of Florence; a brother, Claude Gaskins of Florence; a sister, Ernestine Stone of Vox; four grandchildren, David McElveen of Oregon, Janet McElveen (Wayne) Floyd of Lake City, Julie McElveen (Wesley) Baker of Timmonsville and Jennifer Susan "Jenny" (Andy) Howell of Florence; and four great-grandchildren, Becky Marie Floyd of Lake City, Cierra Baker of Timmonsville, Dana McElveen and Dean McElveen, both of Spanaway, Wash.; and a son-in-law, Every McElveen of New Zion. He was predeceased by a daughter, Emily Marie Gaskins McElveen.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today in Liberty Baptist Church with burial in Gaskins cemetery.
Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.
Ernestine Walker
LAMAR -- Ernestine Tallon Joye Walker, 91, died Saturday morning, Feb. 2, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Newman Swamp cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.
Mrs. Walker was born in Lee County the daughter of the late Clarence Hugh and Lula Irene Parnell Tallon. She was married
to the late James L. Joye and to the late Edwin L. Walker. Mrs. Walker worked as a postal clerk for 26 years before her retirement. She was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church and the Bernie Sue Sunday School Class and Bessie Jeffords Circle of the church.
Surviving are two sons, Robert E. (Gloria) Joye of Lamar and James W. (Peggy) Joye of Hartsville; three stepsons, Lamar Walker and Melvin Walker, both of Bishopville, and Robert M. Walker of Lexington; a stepdaughter, Ellen W. McKaig of Columbia; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ossie L. Turner Jr.
FLORENCE -- Ossie LaRue Turner Jr., 81, of Florence, died late Saturday evening, Jan. 26, 2002, in a Florence medical facility after an illness.
Mr. Turner was born in Pamplico a son of the late Ossie LaRue and Effie Page Turner. He was a member of the Lenora Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Mecca Masonic Lodge and a member of the Omar Shrine Temple. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Fifty Year Club of the church. He was the retired owner and operator of Turner's Open Air Market and was formerly employed with McLeod Regional Medical Center. After his retirement, he became an active volunteer for McLeod's.
He is preceded in death by his wives, Era Mae Calcutt Turner and Nettie Mae Locklair Turner; by two grandchildren, Tracey Elizabeth Bailey and Wade Turner Oliver; by a sister, Bernice Baggett; and by a brother, Elbert Turner.
Surviving are a son, Ossie LaRue Turner III of Florence; five daughters, Key White, Arlene (Barry) Wilson, Sandra Paulson and Debbie Turner all of Florence and Linda Altman of Irmo; a sister, Mrs. David (Bert) Isgett of Pamplico; 11 grandchildren, Johnny McLaughlin of Hartsville, Kim Cox of Effingham, Keith White of Florence, Joe Altman of New York, N.Y., Ann Marie Galloway of Pelion, Jim Altman of Columbia, Scott Bailey of Myrtle Beach, Burke Oliver of Hilton Head, Jessica Goss, Lindsay Zielinski and Justin LaRue Turner all of Florence; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby Street, Florence, S.C. 29501.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Debbie Turner, 1919 Citadel Drive, Florence.
Evelena Abrams Parham
FLORENCE -- Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services for Mrs. Evelena "Amy" Abrams Parham, 2 p.m., Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. She died on Jan. 24, 2002.
Mrs. Parham, was born in Florence County, a daughter of Matthew and Rosa Abrams. She attended the public schools of Florence County. She was the widow of Willie S. Parham.
Survivors are brothers and sisters, Mr. Nathan (Minnie) Abrams, Ms. Lanie Abrams, Mrs. Ollie Crawford, Mrs. Lillie (Melvin) Ross, Mrs. Della M. Wallace, Mrs. Rosanne Mack, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Maude Rogers and Mrs. Selma Rogers; special niece, Ms. Cynthia V. Smith; niece, nephews, cousins, special friends, Jessie Mae Smalls, and Bertha Byrd and other friends.
