LATTA -- Mrs. Danie Taylor Lane, 82, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at her residence.
Mrs. Lane was born in Dillon County, Jane. 23, 1920, a daughter of the late John Monroe and Anner Cook Taylor. She was widow of Ernest Lane and was a member of Bingham Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors are daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth (Harry) Stone of Surfside Beach, Mrs. Annie Belle Bailey, Mrs. Isabelle Lewellen, Mrs. Mable (Curtis) Lee all of Latta, Mrs. Ernestine Barrentine of Olanta, Mrs. Shirley (Jeff) Lee of Florence, Mrs. Pam (Curtis) Nellis of Graham, N.C. and Mrs. Joyce (Harrison) Hutchinson of Cheraw; 27 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by grandson, Michael W. Lewellen.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Kannaday's Funeral Home of Dillon with burial in Greenlawn cemetery.
The family will have visitation from 7-9 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Latta Rescue Squad, 107 W. Bamberg St., Latta, SC 29565.
Kannaday's Funeral Home of Dillon is in charge of services.
David Paul Long
LATTA -- David Paul Long, 84, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Mr. Long was born in Lumberton, N.C., Dec. 9, 1917, a retired farmer and son of the late David Lee Long and Hattie Hamilton Long. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Latta Baptist Church. He was married
to the late Edith Catherine Long.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 at Latta Baptist Church, with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Kannaday's Funeral Home in Latta.
He is survived by sons, Kenneth W. Long of Latta, Michael P. Long of Dillon, Timothy D. Long of Latta, David L. Long of Latta; brothers, Charlie Long of Simpsonville and Biven Long of Latta; sister, Elgiereen L. Bethea of Latta; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 4 from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home in Latta.
Memorials may be made to the Latta Baptist Church, 202 N. Marion Street, Latta, S.C. 29565.
Douglas Jones Jr.
OLANTA -- Mr. Douglas Jones Jr., 72, died Friday, May 31, 2002, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Jones was born in Sumter County, a son of the late Douglas Jones Sr. and Ruby Ardis Jones. He retired from Farmers Telephone of Kingstree, and he was married
to the late Dorothy J. Jones.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Johnny) Miles of Olanta and Dorothy Denise Parrott of Scranton; a son, Douglas James Jones of Kingstree; a sister, Margaret Singletary of Hamlet, N.C.; a brother, James Warren Jones of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, in Brockington Funeral Home Chapel, Lake City, with burial in Piney Grove cemetery.
The family will have visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.
Rev. James Emanuel Fountain
SUMTER -- The Rev. James Emanuel Fountain, 71, of 2885 September Drive, Sumter, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 in Sumter.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church by Dr. Franklin D. Colclough, Eugolist, assisted by Rev. Mullens and Rev. E.H. McDowell Sr. and Rev. Kay Adam Best, pastor. Interment was at Hillside Memorial Park.
Rev. James Emanuel Fountain was born Nov. 30, 1930 in Sumter County. He was a son of the late Mr. Ed Fountain and Mrs. Pearl McKnight. He attended Sumter County public schools graduating from Lincoln High School in 1950. He received a B.S. degree in social studies from Morris College in 1954. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1962. His ministerial training began at Lord Fairfax Community College, Middletown, Va., and he completed his training at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va. He furthered his studies at the University of Virginia where he pastored until his return to Sumter. Upon his return to Sumter in 1991, he affiliated himself with the South Carolina United Methodist Conference and became an associate pastor at Emmanuel United Methodist Church (his home church) in Sumter.
He taught for several years in Sumter County District 2 (Rafting Creek) and for 26 years in the Rappahannock County Public Schools in Virginia. On Nov. 7, 1958 Rev. Fountain was united in Holy Matrimony to Corina Dingle Fountain and this union was blessed with two beautiful children, James and DeAnna.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Corina of the home; a daughter, DeAnna (Melvin) Breeden of Atlanta; a son, James Edward Fountain of San Antonio; four grandsons, Christopher, Matthew, Kevin and Malik of Atlanta; a sister, Willie (Charles) Thomas of Bridgeport, Conn.; two foster daughters, JoAnn (Robert) Allen of Winchester, Va., and Helen Smith of Front Royal, Va.; three foster grandchildren, Meagan, Ashley and Isaiah of Winchester, Va.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The family received friends at 2885 September Drive, Sumter.
Arrangements were handled by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. in Sumter.
Lessie C. 'Eva' Allen
MULLINS -- Mrs. Lessie C. "Eva" Allen, 69, wife of Culbert Allen, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Marion County Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at Aynor Church of God with the Rev. Jerry Love officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Family cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Allen was born Jan. 2, 1933 in Dillon County, a daughter of the late William Sidney Berry and the late Annie Turner Berry. Mrs. Allen was a homemaker and a member of Aynor Church of God.
Surviving Mrs. Allen in addition to her husband of the home are her children, Linda Faye Gerrald of Mullins, Tina Coleman of Interlachen, Fla., William Cook of Aynor, Addie Mae Cook of Mullins, Ernest Cook Jr. of Mullins and Carlton Cook of Lake City; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six brothers, David Berry of Baltimore, Doug Berry of Clairemont, Fla., Mack Berry of Bushnell, Fla., Curtis Berry of Bennettsville, Cecil Berry of Clairemont, Fla., and Harold Berry of Bennettsville; and three sisters, Lottie Mae Sweat of Bennettsville, Joyce Berry of Concord, N.C., and Ruth Williams of Bennettsville.
Mrs. Allen was predeceased by two daughters, Annie Mae Cook and Virginia Darnell Cook; a brother, J.D. Berry; and a sister, Trusla Berry.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
June Privette Owen
FLORENCE -- June Privette Owen, 82, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, in a local hospital after an illness.
She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Ernest Henry and Drummie Hewitt Privette. Formerly of Kingstree, she was co-owner of Owen Iron & Fence Company in Kingstree, and after moving to Darlington County, she was co-owner of Gates, Inc. in Darlington.
She was the widow of Thomas Reynolds Owen.
Mrs. Owen was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church, the Asbury Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, and was Worthy Matron while in Kingstree. She was also a member of Red Robin Card Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Dena (John W.) Altman of Florence; a son, Thomas R. Owen Jr. of LaPorte, Texas; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Pisgah United Methodist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Octavia Courtney Pigate
TIMMONSVILLE -- Octavia Courtney Pigate, 77, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 in a Florence hospital. She was born in Florence County a daughter of the late Ernest Lee and Lincey Louise Lane Courtney. She was a member of Bethany Free Will Baptist Church and the Ruby Lee Severance Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her husband, J. Ashton Pigate; a son, Ray D. (Muriel) Pigate of Timmonsville; a sister, Betty (Ernie) Cornett of Florence; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31 in Bethany Free Will Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 4210 W. Palmetto St. Memorials may be made to Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, 4071 Creek Road, Timmonsville, SC 29161.
Eliza Allison Jones
JOHNSONVILLE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Eliza Allison Jones will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at St. Mark AME Church. Burial will follow in the St. Mark cemetery directed by Moses Funeral Home of Pamplico.
Mrs. Jones died May 30 in a Marion hospital after an illness. She was born in Florence county the daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Preston and Josephine Belin Allison.
She attended the Florence County public schools and was a member of St. Mark AME Church.
Mrs. Jones was the widowed of the late Eddie (Hoss) Jones.
Survivors are a son, Jerry (Sandra Denise) Jones of Olanta; daughters, Alberta Jones, Pauline Jones and Josephine Jones Gordon all of Johnsonville, Lou Ella Rowalls of Gresham, Sallie (Timothy) Donelly of Germany; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Willimas of Gresham; a sister-in-law, Sadie Bell Allison of Florence.
Louise W. Hatchell
LATTA -- Louise W. Hatchell, 92, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
born in Greenville County, Nov. 13, 1909, Mrs. Hatchell was a daughter of the late Wilder B. Wilson and Ernestine Hammond Wilson. She was a homemaker and married
to the late Oscar James Hatchell.
Mrs. Hatchell was an active member of the Catfish Creek Baptist Church. A member of the Pineland Grange; Chairman of the Bicentennial Committee at Catfish Creek Baptist Church; member of the Homemaker Club; Master Farm Homemakers Guild.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, at Catfish Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Kannaday's Funeral Home of Latta. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hatchell is survived by sons, Oscar James (Joyce) Hatchell Jr. of Dillon and Wilder (Anne) Hatchell of Florence; a daughter, Mabel H. (Jack) Allen of Latta; brothers, H.W. (Woody) Wilson and R.W. (Bob) Wilson, both of Greenville; two grandsons, Laurie Allen and Lafon Allen of Latta; four granddaughters, Beverly H. Elmore of Mauldin, Janet H. Austin of Piedmont, Stephanie H. Allen of Florence and Shannon Hatchell of Greenville; a great-grandson, Hunter Allen of Latta and a great-great granddaughter, Courtney Allen of Florence.
Memorials may be made to the Catfish Creek Baptist Church Sunday School Building Fund, 1495 Catfish Church Rd., Latta, SC 29565.
Pearlena Hough
HARTSVILLE -- Funeral service for Pearlena Hough will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002 in Kelley Bell United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church, Bishopville, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Hough, 88, died Wednesday, May 29, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital after an illness.
She received her education in the public schools of Lee County and was a member of Kelley Bell United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Lula Mae Grakewood of Hartsville and Alfreda Taylor of Columbus, Ga.; three brothers, Major Hough of Hartsville, Raymond Hough of Roosevelt, N.Y., and Rev. Frank Hough of Sunset Beach, N.C.; nieces; and nephews.
Lillie Mae Poston
PAMPLICO -- Lillie Mae Allen Poston, 79, of 2981 Bay Road, Pamplico died Monday morning, June 3, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mrs. Poston was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Alvin Carlie and Isco Lee Allen. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the #3 Sunday School class. She retired from Commander Nursing Center as the Activities Director.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Minnie Lee Allen; a daughter, Miriam Ann Purvis; two brothers, Lunice Allen and John Dallas Allen and a sister, Alice Collins.
Surviving are one daughter, Patsy P. Hicks of Pamplico; three sisters, Pearl Carroway of Florence, Jessie Lee Tiller of Pamplico and Gloria Jean Oakley of Columbia; three brothers, Douglas Allen, A.C. Allen and Wayne Allen, all of Effingham; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1823 S. Pamplico Hwy., Pamplico, SC 29583.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
