Preston Samuel Jr.

TIMMONSVILLE -- Funeral service for Deacon Preston Samuel Jr. will be 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 in New Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Bacote-Eaddy Funeral Home of Timmonsville.

Deacon Samuel died Monday, Feb. 18.

He was born in Florence County a son of the late Rev. Preston and Rena Sellers Samuel. He was a lifelong member of New Zion Baptist Church where he served faithfully. He was past president of the Deacon Board and Sunday school superintendent. He was a missionary worker and served on several church committees. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired farmer. He was a member of the Riven Rock Masonic Lodge No. 60.

He was married to the late Mrs. Lula Mae Cooper Samuel.

Survivors include seven daughters, Delphine Samuel, Vergenia McRae, Diane Bruce, Jeanette (Woodrow) Perkins, Beverly Samuel, Jerliene (Charles) Quillen and Cynthia Samuel; four sons, Earl (Mae Linda) Samuel, Ernest Samuel, Samuel Preston III and Lenuel Samuel; three sisters, Bessie (Nathaniel) Wilder, Annie (Cornelius) Johnson and Minister Wilhelmina Williams; two brothers, David Samuel and Maxie (Betty) Sellers; an aunt, Agnes Sellers; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Wake Service with Masonic Rites will be at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel.

Pauline McElveen Gaymon

EFFINGHAM -- Mrs. Pauline Gaymon, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 in a Florence nursing home after an illness. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Thomas cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Muldrow McElveen and Lula Belle Oliver McElveen. Mrs. Gaymon was a homemaker and was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mrs. Gaymon was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Gaymon; a daughter, Clara Gaymon; two sons, Charles and Robbie Lee Gaymon; two sisters, Willa Dean Lynch and Rebecca Morris; and a brother, T.P. McElveen.

Surviving are four daughters, Dot (Jimmy) Parnell of Sumter, Judy (Elbert) Joye of Hemingway, Thelmas Matthews of Olanta and Velma Wiggins of Effingham; three sons, Marshall (Vergie) Gaymon Jr. of Effingham, Ernest Gaymon of Ridgeland and Paul Gaymon of Effingham; a sister, Maggie Gaymon of Sumter; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Curtis L. Dove

MULLINS -- Mr. Curtis Lafon Dove, 53, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at his residence after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Whittington, the Rev. Ray Whittington and the Rev. Bryan Dove officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery in Dillon, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mr. Dove was born Oct. 7, 1949 in Dillon County, a son of the late Reuben and Inez Morris Dove.

Surviving Mr. Dove are a son, Curtis L. Dove Jr. of Benson, N.C.; three brothers, Wilmer Dove and his wife Allene of Darlington, Genaire Dove and his wife Wanda of Mullins and Robert Dove of Florence; and a sister, Betty Byrd and her husband Neal of Mullins.

April Storm Buffkin Gray

MYRTLE BEACH -- April Storm Buffkin Gray, 54, of 47th Avenue North, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

born April 11, 1947 in Tabor City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jamison and Lucille Strickland Buffkin. She graduated from Tabor City High School in 1965 and attended Southeastern Community College. She was a graduate of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Grand Strand program. Mrs. Gray gave to her community through the many volunteer events in which she participated. For the Chamber of Commerce she was the Executive Membership Council sales leader in 1991 and worked on many chamber committees. She enjoyed organizing the hospitality at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony of the City of Myrtle Beach for many years in which her husband plays the role of Santa Claus. She was the Sun-News Volunteer of the Year 1997, nominated by the American Cancer Society. She was the Chairperson of the American Cancer Society, Myrtle Beach Area, Relay for Life, 1998. She was a Kentucky Colonel of the Commonwealth-of-Kentucky. She was President of the Myrtle Beach Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary in 1994. She was a member of the Omar Shrine Chefs Unit Ladies Auxiliary, and the Waccamaw Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary. She was a key staff person of the many of the South Atlantic Shrine Conventions held in Myrtle Beach. She was a princess of the Daughters Of The Nile, Milcah No. 77, Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Shriners One-Hundred Million Club. She was the current First Lady of Omar Shrine Center as the wife of its Potentate (President) . She worked tirelessly for The Shriners Hospitals for Children. Mrs. Gray was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Myrtle Beach. She worked where she was needed whether as a leader or servant. She served for many years as the Director of the Nursery Department. April loved to feed others. She worked in the church kitchen as part of the special hostess committee and specialized with very little resources in feeding the multitude. She organized the food mission of the Grand Strand Passion Play, and provided food for the choir. She served as a member on many varied church committees, and loved working with the youth. Mrs. Gray moved to Myrtle Beach in 1965. In the 1970s she worked for the Genco Janitorial Supply. She was office manager for 16 years with Hazel Hatchell State Farm Insurance Agency until Hazel's retirement, and then worked with Wade Davis State Farm Insurance Agency until her illness in December 2001. She served many years as secretary of the Grand Strand area Life Underwriters Association. She and her husband, Bob, own Sunco Pool Co.

Surviving are her husband, Bob Gray; son, Philip Gray of Conway; daughters, Charlene Hewitt of Danville, Va., Abigail Buffkin Brown and Rachel Gray, both of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Brittany, Erica, Chelsea, Tonya, Jasmine, Stephen and Tabitha; brothers, Terry Buffkin of Mt. Vernon, Lane Buffkin of Whiteville, N.C., and Kenny Buffkin of Bayboro; sisters, Mary O'Brian of Cameron Park, Calif., Linda Garland of Southport, N.C., and Donna Shelley of Green Sea; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Phillip and Esther Gray, brother-in-law, Dan Gray, and sister-in-law, Ellen Chapman, all of Myrtle Beach, and sisters-in-law, Nelda Ball and Julia Gray both of Greenville; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

A.Z. Sharpe

FLORENCE -- A.Z. Sharpe, 85, of 1011 Chestnut St., Florence, died Wednesday evening, May 22, 2002 at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Sharpe was born in Lexington County, a son of the late Daniel Aaron and Effie Hoover Sharpe. He was a member of Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Loyalty Sunday School Class and the Men's Brotherhood. He was a retired insurance agent and had been employed for the past 15 years on the information desk of the Florence City-County Complex.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Evans Sharpe of the home; two sons, Bob (Deborah) Sharpe of Florence and Larry Wayne (Toni) Sharpe of Easley; two daughters, Angie Sharpe (Mike) Jones of Florence and Sharon Sharpe Carnes of Greenville; two brothers, Joseph Ed Sharpe of Lexington and Cornelius Sharpe of Clearwater; a sister, Carrie Chavis of Lexington; 12 grandchildren; a stepgrandson; 13 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 5011, Florence, SC 29502.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Alderman Jr.

CHAPIN -- Services for James Aldrich Alderman Jr., 36, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001 at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church with burial at 5 p.m. in Mt. Hope cemetery, Florence. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. Memorials may be made to Lake Murray Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Alderman died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001. born in Florence, he was a son of Martha Getsinger Alderman and the late James Aldrich Alderman Sr. He was a graduate of West Florence High School and the University of South Carolina. He was employed by Southeastern Freight Lines and was a member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Leslie Timmerman Alderman; his mother of Lexington, formerly of Florence; stepson, Eliot C. Foster of Chapin; stepdaughter, Georgia L. Foster of Chapin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anne A. and Perry Quattlebaum of Charlotte, N.C., Beth A. and Tim McAneney of Lexington; father- and mother-in-law, John and Anna Timmerman of Johnston; sister-in-law, Michele T. Goforth of Johnston; and brother-in-law, Crafton Timmerman of Philadelphia.

Claude Melton Coskrey

FLORENCE -- Services for Claude Melton Coskrey, 82, will be 11 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2001, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Coskrey, widower of Hattie Ruth Gandy Coskrey, died Saturday, July 21, at his home after an illness. born in Summerton, he was the son of the late Walter W. Coskrey and Maude Hilton Coskrey. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Roy Graham Bible Class.

After attending school in Summerton, he moved to Florence and worked at the ACL Railroad. He served for five years in the U.S. Army during World War II, four years overseas in Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Sicily. He retired from the railroad as an inspector in 1980 with 42 years of service.

Surviving are three sons, Claude Melton Coskrey Jr. of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., Richard Dale (Donna) Coskrey and Michael Ray Coskrey, all of Florence; a daughter, Carla C. (Joe) Pappas of Irmo; four grandchildren, Claude Melton Coskrey III, Michelle (Brad) Owens, Blake Coskrey and Nicholas Pappas; a great-grandchild, Talon Owens; a brother, Carlyle W. Coskrey of Summerton; and two sisters, Thelma Furse of Sumter and Mary C. Bell of Hartsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29506.

Mattie T. Gainey

DARLINGTON -- Mrs. Mattie Tedder Gainey, 89, of Darlington died Saturday, May 25, 2002 in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today, May 28 in the Kistler Chapel conducted by Rev. Charlotte Walters. Burial will follow in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Lydia directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mrs. Gainey was born in Lee County and was the daughter of the late Sam and Hannah Jones Tedder. She was a homemaker and was married to the late James Monroe Gainey. Mrs. Gainey loved children and enjoyed flowers.

Mrs. Gainey was preceded in death by two children; two brothers; two sisters and four grandchildren.

Survivors include one sister, Creola (Chesley) Lloyd of Darlington; ten grandchildren, Mattie Ellis of Cordele, Ga., Margaret Driggers of Scanton, Barbara Hodges and James Gainey both of Hartsville, Joann Gainey and Rita Hopkins both of Darlington, Ricky Cassidy of Seneca, Hannah Howle of Florence, Patricia Frye of Lamar and Vernie Rae Gainey of Patrick; 48 great grandchildren and 50 great great -grandchildren.

Laris Dalmon McDaniel Sr.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Mr. Laris Dalmon McDaniel, Sr., 76, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, in Carolina Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C., after an illness.

Mr. McDaniel was born in Lake City, a son of Clennie Prosser McDaniel and the late Laris Wellie McDaniel. He was a graduate of Hannah High School and retired owner of McDaniel Trucking Company. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Huntersville, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise Belflower McDaniel of Huntersville, N.C.; his mother, Clennie P. McDaniel of Lake City; two daughters, Mrs. Vicki Hummel of Mooresville, N.C. and Donna McDaniel of Huntersville, N.C.; two sons, Laris D. McDaniel, Jr. of Brandon, Florida and Warren T. McDaniel of Huntersville; one sister, Mrs. Maudrey Kennedy of Myrtle Beach; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Pamplico, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1883 S. Pamplico Highway, Pamplico, SC 29583; or to the First Baptist Church, Huntersville, N.C.

The family will have visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge.

Elizabeth Ann Gamble Cusack

INDIANTOWN -- Elizabeth Ann Gamble Cusack, wife of Herbie Cusack Jr., died Sunday in a Charleston hospital. Mr. Cusack was 49.

Mrs. Cusack was born in Kingstree, a daughter of Belver Scott Gamble and the late Thomas D. Gamble Jr. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended Coker College. Mrs. Cusack was co-owner of Indiantown Market and was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband of Indiantown; her mother of Kingstree; a daughter, Hailey W. Wilson of Kingstree; a sister, Eva Towne Saltik of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Thomas D. Gamble III of Nesmith; a granddaughter, Evie Wilson of Kingstree; two nieces and two nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the home of her daughter, 627 Green Street in Kingstree.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Alzheimers Association.

James Alan Smith

FLORENCE -- James Alan Smith, 54, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 in a local hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Sunday, June 2 in the Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

He was born in Austin, Ala., a son of Lillie Glisson Smith and the late James Douglas Smith. He was vice president of Climatic Corp. where he had worked for 16 years. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Collins Smith of the home; two sons, Jeffery (Krista) Smith and Jody (Lynn) Smith, both of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Linda Tilman of Valdosta, Ga., and Debra Snider of Henderson, Texas; two brothers, David Smith of Columbia and Douglas Smith, Jr. of Florence; and five granddaughters, Melissa Smith, Nicole Smith, Lynsay Smith, Kayla Smith and Kaitlyn Smith.

He was predeceased by a son, James Alan Smith, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
