TIMMONSVILLE -- Kathleen Keels Hicks died Aug. 27, 2001, at the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee after an illness. She was born in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late James Thompson and Leila Burgess Keels. She was a graduate of Carolina Business College of Columbia. Before her retirement, she was a counselor assistant with the S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Dept. in Florence.
She was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church, the Clarice Koon Sunday School Class and the WMU. She was also a member of the Fine Arts Club. Her husband was the late W. Carl Hicks.
Surviving are a son, Robert Carl "Bob" (Janelle) Hicks of Anderson; two daughters, Jane (Hugh) Miley of Florence and Betty Hyatt of Lumberton, N.C.; five grandchildren, Robert Miley, Marc Miley, Robyn Hicks, Jenna Lawrence and Kandice Hyatt and three great grandchildren, Amanda, Robbie and Kennedy Miley.
She was predeceased by two brothers, J.T. Keels and Wyatt Keels; two sisters, Mildred Jordan and Sylvia Phillips; and two sons-in-law, Captain Robert Baldwin and Rusty Keels.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at 3:30 p.m. in Sardis Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 West Palmetto Street, today, Aug. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.

William McKinley Bell Jr.
FLORENCE -- William McKinley Bell Jr., 76, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3 at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will be in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Mr. Bell, husband of Florene Walker Bell, was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., on Oct. 28, 1924, the son of the late William McKinley Bell Sr. and Delsie Alexander Bell. He moved to Florence in 1959 and worked for CSX Railroad until his retirement in 1985. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1st Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of the home; five sons, Dr. William M. Bell III and wife Roxanne of Kingsport, Tenn., Marion Wayne Bell and wife Janice of Florence, Michael S. Bell and wife Connie of Florence, Donald F. Bell and wife Donna of Columbia and Jeffrey L. Bell of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Tracy Horton, Wayne Bell Jr., Andrew Bell, Amy Bustos, Jim Bell and William Bell; and two great-grandsons, Gage and Spencer Horton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Irene Turner Flowers
PAMPLICO -- Lena Irene Turner Flowers, 86, of 812 W. Turner Gate Road, Pamplico died Friday evening, Aug. 31, 2001, in a Florence medical facility after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Mrs. Flowers was born in Pamplico, a daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Sophanie Dean Turner. She was a member of Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary and formerly served as the secretary for the Sunday School Department. She was a former employee of Delta Mills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Flowers, who died in 1960.
Surviving are two sons, Legrand (Joyce) Flowers and James Ray (Phyllis) Flowers, both of Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Linda (Hubert) Poston of Pamplico; two brothers, A.Z. Turner of Florence and Oliver Turner of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Evelyn Flowers of Pamplico; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church. 263 W. Seven Mile Road, Pamplico, S.C.
Geneva 'Gennie' McWhite
PAMPLICO -- Funeral service for Ms. Geneva "Gennie" McWhite will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at Aimwell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Moses Funeral Home of Pamplico.
Ms. McWhite died Monday, Aug. 27 in a Manhattan, N.Y., hospital after an illness. She was born in Florence County the daughter of the Irene McWhite and the late Nathan McWhite.
Ms. McWhite attended the public schools in the state of New Jersey. She was employed by the Housing Authority for 20 years in the state of New York and a member of First Baptist Church N.Y.
Survivors in addition to her mother of New York are a sister, Ivy McWhite, and a niece, Brittany King, both of New York; an aunt; uncles; and grandparents.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her aunt, Alma Winston, 110 Cain St., Pamplico.
Ervin C. Lee
ORANGEBURG -- Ervin Carlisle Lee, 77, of 3294 Jackson Dr., Orangeburg, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the First Baptist Church in Orangeburg. Burial will be 4 p.m. at Sumter cemetery. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Lee was born in Catchall, Sumter County, a son of the late Lucian Lee and Jane Elizabeth Reames Lee. He was a retired Division Manager, for Commercial Credit Corporation. Mr. Lee was a graduate of Newberry College. He was a member of the Lions International and Past President of the Sumter and Orangeburg Clubs. He was named Lion of the Year in 1964 by the Sumter Club. He was a former member of: the Board of Trustees, Bethea Baptist Home, Darlington, and the Advisory Board for the American Red Cross, Sumter. He was a former member of American Legion Post no. 15. He was a member, deacon, and Sunday School teacher for over 45 years, 35 of which was at First Baptist Church at First Baptist Church. Mr. Lee was a U.S. Army Veteran of W.W.II.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Jeannette Flemming Lee, of the home; son, David M. Lee, Orangeburg; daughter, Mrs. Brian R. (Linda) Stanley, Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Lucian R. Lee of Taylors and Rev. Robert E. Lee of Dillon. He was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Mildred Lee Rhodes.
Family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the residence and at other times, friends may call the residence and Dukes-Harley Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1240 Russell St., Orangeburg, S.C. 29115 or to a Charity of One's Choice.
Doris B. Wallace
DILLON -- Services for Doris B. Wallace will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday in Dillon First Baptist Church with burial in Riverside cemetery directed by Cooper Fuineral Home.
Mrs. Wallace, 70, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 at her residence after an illness.
born in Richmond, Va. May 14, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Carlton M. Benton and Frances Carter Benton. She was a member of Dillon First Baptist Church and worked with Dixiana Mill for 22 years.
Survivors include her sons, Glenn A. Hunt of Dillon, and Dennis E. Hunt of Umatilla, Fla.; brother, Thomas F. Benton of Dillon; 4 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter.
Elma Melton
OATES -- Funeral services for Elma Sturgeon Melton, 93, will be at 4 p.m. today at Elim United Methodist Church. The Rev. Pat McCain will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to Elim United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Melton died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001. born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Louie and Minnie Moncrief Sturgeon. She was a member of Elim United Methodist Church and the Elim Senior Citizens.
She was retired from Sonoco Products Company and was a resident of Bethea Baptist Retirement Community.
Surviving are her grandchildren, Carl Watkins of Hartsville, Wanda Hamilton of Darlington, Candy Henry of Mechanicsville, Va., Glenn Melton of Florence and Robbie Melton of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Cecil W. Watson
FLORENCE -- Cecil Wilcox Watson, 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. today in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens. Mr. Watson was born in Brittons Neck on Oct. 26, 1923, the son of the late Alec and Retha Watson. He graduated from Brittons Neck High School, where he played on the state championship basketball team. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Florence and was retired from Independent Life Insurance Company Surviving are his wife, Nellie Watson of the home; two daughters, Cheryl (Tim) Timmons of Timmonsville and Debbie (Chris) Brown of San Jose, Calif.; three sons, David (Jennie) Watson of Florence, Bryan (Helen) Watson and Joel (Nancy) Watson, both of Effingham; four sisters, Althea (James) Johnson and Blanche (Thomas) Dew, both of Pamplico, Maude (Harry) Goude of Florence and Freda (Delano) Courtney of Timmonsville; seven grandchildren, Tripp Timmons and Christin Timmons, both of Timmonsville, Nell Arnold of Florence, Brittany Evans, D.J. Watson and Holly Watson, all of Effingham, and Patrick Brown of San Jose, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Aerie Avant Roberts
HEMINGWAY -- Aerie Avant Roberts, 84, widow of Gary Detlaw Roberts, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 in a Georgetown hospital after an illness.
Mrs. Roberts was born in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Belton Brockington Avant and Sarah Jane Cribb Avant. She was a homemaker, a member of the Outland Church of God, an honorary member of the New Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Good Hope schools.
Surviving are three sons, Welton Roberts of Georgetown, Charles Roberts of Loris, and Gary D. Roberts Jr. of Summerville; daughter, Annie Ruth Cook of Cross; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Outland Church of God.
Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Vesta Davis
SOCIETY HILL -- Vesta Weldon Davis, age 84, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 in a Hartsville hospital. Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis was born in Lowndes County, Ga., daughter of the late Mack and Bevrania Mathis Weldon. She was in the hotel food service industry for many years and was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are two sons, Charles (Betsy) W. Davis of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Mack (Donna) Davis of Society Hill; also two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Dorothy White Goodman
TIMMONSVILLE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Dorothy White Goodman will be 3 p.m. today in the New Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Church cemetery directed by Bacote-Eaddy Funeral Home.
Mrs. Goodman died Saturday Sept. 1, 2001.
She was born in Sumter County a daughter of the late Mack Willie and Mattie Coleman White. She was a lifelong member of the New Zion Baptist Church, where she served as a Deaconess, member of Missionary and was the Mother of the Church.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, S.A. Goodman; a daughter, Willa Mae 'Betty" Keels; a son, James White; seven sisters, Readis (Homer) Boles, Rose (Roosevelt) Little, Catherine (Joseph) Jackson, Lou (Edgar) Scott, Doris (Cecil) Myers, Janie (Robert) Williams and Ernestine (David) Scott; three brothers, Willie (Pearlina) White, Walter White and Jessie (Mary) White; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
LeRoy Goodson
LAMAR -- Funeral services for Mr. LeRoy Goodson of 108 Teachers Drive will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Bethany Baptist Church of Lamar. Rev. Emanuel Simon, pastor. Burial will be in the Plaza Memorial Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Goodson was born in Darlington County a son of the late Willie and Mollie Joe Goodson. He was raised by his stepmother, Rebecca Goodson and was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. He was marry to Mary Jane Bess Goodson and worked at RBC Bearing of Hartsville.
Survivors are his wife of the home; three sons, Andre Goodson of Florence, Anthony Goodson of Greensville, and Deon Goodson of Lamar; three children raised as his own, Charlie Lee Goodson, Billy Goodson and Tyrone Hicks all of Lamar; a sister, Annie Lee McDaniel of Bishopville; a brother, Claudis (Harriett) Goodson of Petersburg, Va.; stepmother, Rebecca Goodson of Lamar.
Mae Martin Johnson
FLORENCE -- Mae Boatwright Martin Johnson, 76, of Florence, died Friday afternoon, Aug. 24, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Hill cemetery in Marion.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Danny Martin, 1130 Pineapple Gate Drive, Florence.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Marion, a daughter of the late Henry and Elva Yocum Boatwright. She was a member of West Monroe Baptist Church in Monroe, N.C., and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert V. Martin, who died in 1965.
Surviving are two sons, Danny Martin of Florence and Vernon (Judy) Martin of Lugoff; a daughter, Linda (Charlie) McLaurin of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, Howard Boatwright of Nichols; three sisters, Helen Yarborough of Mullins, Marjorie Lane of Marion and Carol Martin of Florence; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 1247 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, S.C. 29063.
