Martin, Sara

July 23, 1940 — Sept. 7, 2002

COMMERCE, Ga. — Sara Joe Gillespie Martin, 62, of 30 Cross St. died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at B.J.C. Medical Center in Commerce.

Born in Franklin County, she was a member of Bush River Baptist Church.

Surviving are widower, Odell Martin of the home; daughter, Betty Joe Burns of Commerce; son, Ricky Burns of Commerce; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was the daughter of the late Pauline Gillespie Wheeler. She was preceded in death by two sons, Otis Martin and Danny Martin.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bush River Baptist Church, Commerce, by the Rev. Julius Mack; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home in Toccoa.

The family is at the residence.

Kyle, Irene

Sept. 1, 1910 — Sept. 9, 2002

CORNELIA, Ga. — Irene Wuthrich Merck Kyle, 92, of Cornelia died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center.

Born in Habersham County, she was a member of Level Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Kathleen Woodall of Cornelia; sons, John "Sonny" Merck of Cumming, Jimmy Kyle of Cornelia and Doug Kyle of Mount Airy; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late John and Lou Carpenter Wuthrich. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Louise Jones.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin-Stewart Funeral Home by the Rev. Terry Rice; burial will follow in Level Grove Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Woodall, 829 Wayside St., Cornelia.

Fleming, Mynie B.

June 5, 1910 — Sept. 8, 2002

MARTIN, Ga. — Mynie Brown Fleming, 92, of 680 Pleasant Hill Road died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.

Born in Madison County, she was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are daughters, Joyce Smith of Martin, Virginia Ayers of Hartwell and Bobbie Seymore of Dunnellon, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Jessie M. Fleming and the daughter of the late Thomas and Berdie Perrin Brown. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Hilley; a sister, Nellie Fowler; and six brothers, Compton, Ersie, Plummer, Luther, George and Henry Brown.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia; burial will follow in the Bethany Baptist Church cemetery in Hart County. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

At times other than calling hours, the family will be at the home, 680 Pleasant Hill Road, Martin.

Davis, Nina

Oct. 12, 1914 — Sept. 9, 2002

TOCCOA, Ga. — Nina Ramey Davis, 88, of Toccoa died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Habersham Medical Center.

She was born in Oconee County and lived most of her life in Toccoa. She was retired from Hartwell Mills and Milliken. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Virginia Madox of Cleveland, Betty Greene of Greenville, S.C., and Evelyn Davis of Woodstock; sons, Frank Davis of Oxford, Earl Davis of Hamilton and Curtis Davis of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; sister, Pearl Scott Mullinax of Toccoa; brother, Glenn Ramey of Macon; 21 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Henry Lipscomb and Martha Caroline Holland Ramey. She was preceded in death by a son, Aaron Davis.

Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Hillcrest chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa, by the Revs. Charles Holland and Jerry Stowe; burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family members will be at their respective home.

Ashworth, Perry

Nov. 1, 1942 — Sept. 7, 2002

Perry Mason Ashworth, 59, of 300 Hill House Road, Anderson, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Hart County Hospital.

Born in Anderson, he was a former employee of Custom Steel and Wood. He retired from the U.S. Army.

Surviving are widow, Vivian Gale Wiles Ashworth of the home; sons, Richard Jason Ashworth and Ethan Dakota Ashworth, both of Anderson; daughters, Eva Marie Ashworth of Florida, Mary Jane Ashworth and Trudy Ashworth, both of Chicago; brother, William Edward Ashworth of Anderson; sisters, Mary Ann Hendrix of Bowersville, Ga., and Lizzie Mae Jackson of Anderson; and two grandsons.

He was the son of the late Perry Walter Ashworth and Nora Lee Willis Ashworth.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home; burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Anderson, with military honors. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Family members will be at their respective homes.

Kidd, Sue

March 7, 1906 — Sept. 7, 2002

CALHOUN FALLS — Sue M. Kidd, 96, of 51 Mud Creek Road died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in the Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Madison County, Ga., she was retired after many years of service as a spinner from Burlington.

Surviving are sons, Horace Kidd of Abbeville and Doyle Kidd of Greenwood; daughters, Mazelle Daniels and Marie Haynie, both of Calhoun Falls; sisters, Helen Kidd and Cora Mae Simmons, both of Kannapolis, N.C., and Jewell Brown of Newburg, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Edward and Alice King Mitchell.

Services are at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Calhoun Falls Holiness Church with Dr. Thomas Batts and the Rev. Lawrence Johnson; burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Abbeville. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

The family is at the home.

Calhoun Falls Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kay, Cora Lee

July 5, 1922 — Sept. 7, 2002

EASLEY — Cora Lee Neely Kay, 80, of 435 Hunt Road died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.

Born in Woodruff, she was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Barbara Marcus of Anderson, Doris Kay of the home, Rosa Lee Hewey of Seneca and Nancy Rhodes of Liberty; sons, Curtis Kay of Seneca, Harry Kay of Easley, Harold Kay and Robert “Bud” Kay, both of Liberty; sister, Mamie Crawford of Belton; brothers, Walter O’Neal of Cateechee and Johnny Neely of Anderson; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Curtis Kay and the daughter of the late Hugh and Sallie Ann Tribble Neely.

Services are at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Liberty Mortuary; burial will be in Liberty Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

The family is at the home.

Harrison, Corinne

Dec. 20, 1920 — Sept. 6, 2002

Corinne Alice Wideman Harrison, 81, of 104 Hillcrest Circle, Anderson, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at her home.

Born in Anderson County, she was a member of Mt. Carmel CME Church, where she served as a missionary and a stewardess and an Eastern Star. She was a graduate of Denmark Technical College in Denmark, and a licensed cosmetologist and worked as an entrepreneur.

Surviving are widower, John L. Harrison of the home; and a brother, Alvin Wideman of Camden, N.J.

She was the daughter of the late Tatum and Aquila Wideman. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie Wideman and Woodrow Wideman; and a sister, Gertrude Wideman.

Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Annie-Frank chapel of Johnson Funeral Home by the Rev. Samuel Stewart; burial in Anderson Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home of Betty Wideman and family, 804 Burdine Road, Anderson.

Durham, Jett

July 22, 1918 — Sept. 7, 2002

Jett Thomas Durham, 84, of 3201 Algonquin Ave., Anderson, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at the Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Pickens County, he was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving are widow, Ruby Durham of the home; son, Barry Mikel Durham of Anderson; daughter, Shelby Durham Raines of Anderson; sister, Willie Mae Shoemaker of Knoxville, Tenn.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

He was the son of the late Julius V. Durham and Colestia Alexander Durham. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford, Winfred and Bernard Durham; and a sister, Norma Durham Craig.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum by the Rev. Ray McDowell. The body is at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Anderson. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

The family will be at the residence.

Caldwell, Beatrice

ANTREVILLE — Helen Beatrice Caldwell, 77, of 4956 S.C. 28 North died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at her home.

Born in Abbeville County, she was a retired employee of the Abbeville Shirt Plant and was also a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a number of cousins.

She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Lillie Gordon Caldwell.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Todd Davis officiating. The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home in Abbeville.

The family suggests memorials be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 246 Sharon Church Road, Abbeville, S.C. 29620.
