LAKE CITY -- Mr. George Alton Lawrence, 87, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Lawrence was born in Florence County, a son of the late John Franklin and Adelaide Hattie Baker Lawrence. He was a retired farmer and member of the Lake City First Baptist Church and the Abrams Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Board and Trustees for Lake City Schools and a former Deacon of Liberty Baptist Church. He was married
to the late Audrey M. Lawrence.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachel Lawrence Bline of Lake City and Paula Jane Lawrence of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Herman B. Lawrence of Columbia and George Alton Lawrence Jr. of Lake City; and five grandchildren, John Franklin Lawrence Jr. of Austin, Texas, Stephanie Lasek of Mt. Pleasant, Jenny M. Genero of Oviedo, Florida, Skylar Lawrence of Columbia and Allison Patrick of Beaufort. He was predeceased by one son, John Franklin Lawrence and by one grandson, Michael Craig Bline. He was predeceased by a brother, Oren B. Lawrence; and by three sisters, Letitia McCutcheon, Genevieve McFadden and Amanda Lawrence.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Lake City Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church, Missions Department, P.O. Box 220, Lake City, SC 29560.
The family will have visitation from 7-9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

John A. Johnson
PAMPLICO -- John Alex "James" Johnson, 79, of 1030 Delta Mills Road, Pamplico, died Monday evening, Sept. 10, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Johnson was born in Horry County, a son of the late Jerry Mar and Maggie Williamson Johnson. He was a retired self-employed farmer and carpenter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having been a recipient of the Oak Cluster with two Stars and Purple Heart after being wounded in action twice. He was a member of the D.A.V. and of Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Selena Brooks and Pauline Tinker.
A loving grandfather, father and husband of 60 years, he is survived by his wife, Altha Jane Watson Johnson of Pamplico; two daughters, Joyce (Legrand) Flowers of Myrtle Beach and Marilyn (Timmons) Hoffmeyer of Florence; four sons, James Kenneth (Mary) Johnson, David Lamar Johnson and Jerry (Mary) Johnson, all of Pamplico, and Ronald Johnson of Moncks Corner; three sisters, Pincey Cook and Lessie Weaver, both of Gallivants Ferry, and Inez Todd of Lancaster; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Nellie James Cooper
FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Nellie James Cooper will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 at Bowers Chapel U.M. Church, 5960 E. Old Marion Highway, Florence. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion U.M. Church cemetery, directed by Smith’s Funeral Home, Inc. of Florence.
Mrs. Nellie J. Cooper, known to the community as "Cack, " was born Oct. 25, 1924 in Florence, the daughter of the late Mr. Milton Emanuel and Mrs. Jeanette James. She departed this life Saturday, Sept. 8 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Cooper attended the public schools of Florence County. She was a life member of Bowers Chapel U.M. Church, where she served as a member of the Stewardess Board until her health declined, United Methodist Women, and mother of the church. She was willing to serve in any capacity wherever she was needed.
Mrs. Cooper retired from Francis Marion University as head cook and she also worked at Cain’s Restaurant as head cook and manager.
She was known for her beautiful smile and kind words. Mrs. Cooper was loved by everyone she came in contact with. She will be sadly missed in the community, the church, but most of all in the home.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories her children, Joseph (Claretha) Cooper, Mary L. Cooper, Cora (Lawrence) Davis, Mae (Hayward) Davis and Nellie (Gregory) Gainey, all of Florence, Robert (Loretta) Cooper of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Roosevelt (Pamela) Cooper of Philadelphia; a grandson, Brandon Cooper of the home; a brother, Harry (Luree) James of Florence; a sister, Mary Davis of Long Island, N.Y.; an aunt, Virginia Harris of Florence; five sisters-in-law, Annie M. Scott, Lelia Smith, Louise Peoples and Mary Ella Cooper, all of Florence, and Grace James of New York; a brother-in-law, David L. Cooper of Charlotte, N.C.; six adopted daughters, Cynthia Cooper, Marie Taylor, Annie M. Bailey and Mary Ellen (Valco) Cooper, all of Florence, Arletha Dennison of Marion and Nancy Dupree of Dillon; five adopted sisters, Ruth Bailey, Hattie James, Julia Cooper and Martha Legette, all of Florence; 33 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Cooper’s remains will lie in state at church one hour prior to service.
The family is receiving friends at the home of her son, Mr. Joe Cooper, 448 Siesta Drive.
Willie Mae Burgess
FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Willie Mae Burgess will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 in Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church with Bishop Kenneth J. Swaringer officiating. Burial will be in Greater Gethsemane Garden of Rest directed by Peoples Funeral Service of Florence.
Mrs. Burgess died Sunday, Sept. 9.
She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., a daughter of the late Isaiah and Annie Dora Backus White. She was a devoted member of Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church where she served as a member of the Usher Board and Senior Choir. She was the wife of the late Mr. Daniel Burgess.
Survivors include a daughter, Annie Rea Johnson of Florence; three brothers, Rufus White and Isaiah (Rowena) White of San Diego and Charles (Willie Mae) White of Baltimore; three sisters, Ethel Johnson and Mattie (C.J.) Lyde of San Diego and Gloria Washington of Baltimore; two special cousins, Diana Boston and Annette Williams of Florence; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
R. J. Reynolds Sr.
EFFINGHAM -- Rupert Jay "R.J." Reynolds Sr., 82, of Effingham, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, 2001, in a Florence health care center after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today in Elim Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Mr. Reynolds was born in Horry County, a son of the late Harmon Morgan and Bertha Mae Lupo Reynolds. He was a retired farmer and barber, and Ordained Lay Minister, an Executive Committeeman for the Elim Voting Precinct, a member of Oak Grove Lodge No. 378 A.F.M., a member of Elim Baptist Church, a former teacher of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class and had been elected Deacon Emeritus for Elim Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Earlene Jenkins Reynolds, who died in 1997; by a daughter, Marjorie Reynolds; and by two brothers, Gary O. Reynolds and S.M. Reynolds. Surviving are his children, Millie (Legrand) Martin, Rupert J. (Janis) Reynolds Jr., Harold W. (Linda) Reynolds and Ronnie K. (Terry) Reynolds, all of Effingham, Phyllis (Ray) Langston of Manning and Gregory J. (Suzette) Reynolds of Timmonsville; a brother, Travis Reynolds of Galivants Ferry; four sisters, Daisy Cooke, Mary Ellen Gore and Geraldine Alford, all of Gallivants Ferry, and Lois Morrow of Timmonsville; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth P. Gause
COWARD -- Elizabeth Phipps Gause, 88, wife of the late David A. Gause, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mrs. Gause was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Louis B. and Lizzie Hutchinson Phipps. She was a homemaker and member of Effingham Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, David A. (Bonnie) Gause Jr. of Lancaster; two grandsons, D. Gregg (Annette) Gause of Lancaster, and Samuel A. (Nancy) Gause of Irmo; one great granddaughter, Christina Burnham of Lancaster. Mrs. Gause was predeceased by two brothers, L. B. Phipps and Jimmie D. Phipps.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the St. Paul United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577; or to the Effingham Presbyterian Church, 526 E. Effingham Highway, Effingham, SC 29541.

Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' Benton Gasque
LATTA -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Benton Gasque, 84, of Latta died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001 at Marion Medical Center.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Latta United Methodist Church with burial in Magnolia cemetery in Latta. Kannaday's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kannaday's Funeral Home in Latta.
Mrs. Gasque was born Nov. 16, 1916 in Puyallup, Wash., to Edgar Augustus Benton and Blanche Altamae Peacock Benton and was reared in Hanson, Mass. Mrs. Gasque was a graduate of Whitman High School and Brockton Business College. She was a secretary for the federal government in Washington, D.C., at the Italian Division of the Office of Secret Service. Mrs. Gasque was a member of Latta United Methodist Church and a member of the Josephine Stackhouse Circle. She was married
to Samuel Norwood Gasque Sr. for 60 years.
She is survived by her husband, Judge (Ret.) Samuel Norwood Gasque Sr. of the home; sons, Samuel Norwood (Marilyn) Gasque Jr. of Flat Rock, N.C., and Paul Edgar (Laura) Gasque of Latta; daughters, Judith Anne Gasque Moody of Florence and Nancy Ruth Gasque (Buzzy) Finklea of Latta; a sister, Glenna Ruth Oksanen of Halifax, Mass.; grandchildren, Jesse James (Jennifer) Brigman III, Nancy Elizabeth "Betsy" Finklea, Belva Jenkinson (Andy) Britt, Tracy Fore Finklea, Paul Conan Gasque and Lauren Elizabeth Gasque, all of Latta; and great-granddaughter, Savannah Victoria Britt of Latta. She was predeceased by a son, James Robert Gasque.

Greg A. Phalen
OLANTA -- Greg A. Phalen, 23, died Oct. 7, 2001 from injuries sustained in a house fire. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with visitation following the service.
born in Waltham Massachusetts, he was a son of Valerie Peppard Phalen. He was a painter.
Surviving besides his mother of Olanta are his stepfather, Curtis "Dagger" Anderson, also of Olanta; sisters; Tina Poston of Scranton and Rhonda Phalen of Olanta; brothers Gordon Phalen, and Lawrence Phalen, both of Olanta.; stepsisters, Brenda Kay Anderson, Sylvia Jean Richburg, Shirley Sims, and Teresa Newman; and a stepbrother, David Anderson.

FLORENCE -- Services for Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Covington, 97, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, Twin Church Road, Florence. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in Hebron cemetery, near Clio. Friends may call at the home of Anna Hazel Wilson, 516 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville or the home of Carlisle T. Mrs. Covington, widow of the late Thomas Gibson Covington, died Sunday. born in Clio, she was a daughter of the late William Charles and Bessie Traywick Smith. She attended Columbia College and taught school for many years in Hartsville and Wallace, N.C. She retired from Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Fla. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) . She was an initial resident of the Methodist Manor of Florence.
She was the beloved sister of Anna Hazel Wilson of Hartsville and brother, Carlisle T. Smith, of Bennettsville and the beloved aunt of a nephew, nieces, and their families.
Jerry Wayne Broach
TIMMONSVILLE -- Jerry "Wayne" Broach, 50, died Oct. 7, 2001, in a Florence hospital, after a long illness. He was born in Florence County, a son of Marion G. Broach and the late Carrie Morris Broach.
He was a graduate of Southside High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.
Surviving are: His father of Florence; his wife, Janice Anderson Broach, Timmonsville; two sons, Jerry "Wayne" Broach Jr. and Jason A. Broach, both of Timmonsville; two daughters, Melissa B. Filion and Susan D. Broach, both of Timmonsville; their mother Sarah Filyaw Broach, Timmonsville; two step-sons, Donald M. Anderson, and Kelvin D. Anderson, of Timmonsville; two step-daughters, Jacqueline Anderson, Timmonsville and Jennifer (Jason) Coker, Alcolu; a brother, Marion (Sandy) Broach, Timmonsville; a sister, Patricia (Tommy) King, Darlington; a special friend, Quan Trieu, Timmonsville and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, David R. Broach.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Byrd cemetery.

John L. 'Jake' Anderson
COWARD -- John Liston "Jake" Anderson, 71, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Anderson was born in Florence County, a son of Jettie Filyaw Anderson and the late E. Eugene Anderson. He was a retired farmer and a member of Coward Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are his mother, Jettie Filyaw Anderson of Coward, and a sister, Mrs. Aaron (Sarah) A. Lee of Coward. Mr. Anderson was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Betty Locklear, and by three brothers, Otis Anderson, Lupton Anderson and Billy Anderson.
Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in Coward Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in St. Paul United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Holman Sr.
SOCIETY HILL -- Funeral services for James Holman Sr. will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 in St. John Temple Holiness Church. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Holman, 58, died Friday, Oct. 5 at his residence after an illness.
He was born in Darlington County a son of the late Clarence and Naomi Conyers Holman. He received his education in Orangeburg County public schools and was a member of St. John Temple Holiness Church.
Mr. Holman was employed by Hanson Minerals Co. in Bennettsville for 25 years of service.
He was united in holy matrimony to the former Josephine Graham on May 7, 1962. This union was blessed with two daughters and two sons.
Surviving are two daughters, Jo Jean Holman Bishop of Society Hill and Jannie Mae Holman of Ansonia, Conn.; two sons, Robert Holman of Richmond, Va., and James (Hulio) Holman Jr. of Society Hill; four sisters, Ida Mae Washington and Willie Mae Jones, both of Orangeburg, Naomi Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Annie Gardner of Society Hill; a brother, J.C. Holman of Orangeburg; nine grandchildren; aunts; uncle; and other close relatives and friends.
