FLORENCE -- Owen O'Connor Schweers III, 41, of Florence, formerly of New York City, died Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001, at his residence after an illness.
Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Mr. Schweers was born in Savannah, Ga. a son of Catherine Fowler Schweers and Owen O'Connor Schweers Jr. He was formerly employed in the Press Office of New York City Mayor David Dinkins. After moving to Florence in 1992, he became an AIDS Activist on both the state and local levels. He was associated with the Java Express of Florence, was a member of the S.C. Ecumenical Aids Network, a member of the board of the National Catholic AIDS Network, was a founding member of the Hope For The Pee Dee and was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Schweers-Jones of Atlanta, Ga.
Surviving are his mother of Florence; his father of Salisbury, Md.; four sisters, Kathie (Larry) Strause of Virginia Beach, Va., Patricia Ann Schweers of Los Angeles, Calif., Martha Eileen Schweers of Jefferson, N.C. and Sheila Joan Schweers of Florence; a brother, Sgt. Matthew Norman (Grace) Schweers of Tocoma, Wash.; nieces and nephews, Adina Strauss of Wilmington, N.C, Mary Angela Schweers, Megan Schweers, Stephan Schweers and Sean Schweers all of Tocoma, Wash.; and a special friend, Peter Clark of New York City, N.Y.
Memorials may be made to the Hope For The Pee Dee, 514 S. Dargan Street, Florence, S.C. 29506 or to the McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, S.C. 29506.
Clarence Lavell Horne
FLORENCE -- Clarence Lavell Horne, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at his residence after an illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel.
He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Wilbur Jesse and Ollie Blackmon Horne. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a journeyman/pressman in the newspaper industry for 35 years.
Mr. Horne married
Nancy Lee Cox in 1951 and of that marriage were born three children who survive him: William Clarence Horne, Ricky Lavell Horne and Adrian Lorraine Dixon, all of Florence. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Emma Susan Disher Thomas
KINGSTREE -- Mrs. Emma Susan Disher Thomas, 85, widow of Hollie John Thomas, died Saturday at her residence.
Mrs. Thomas was born in the Hebron community, a daughter of the late Louis and Mary Bradham Disher. She retired after 30 years as an employee of Williamsburg County Memorial County Memorial Hospital. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her brothers, Leo Bryant, Everette Disher and Eugene Disher; and sisters, Camilla McKenzie and Mary Jordan.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Powell of Florence and Judy Poplin of Kingstree; two sons, H.L. Thomas of Manning and Francis Thomas of Los Angles, Calif.; brother, Lindbergh Thomas of Sumter; sisters, Ruth Cliff and Teresa Faulk both of Wilmington, N.C.; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Monday in Kingstree Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Morris Smith. Williamsburg Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Georgetown County, 2591 N. Fraser St., Georgetown, S.C. 29440.
Mae Phoebe Crowell
HARTSVILLE -- Mrs. Mae Phoebe Crowell of 1244 Flinns Road died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at St. John United Methodist Church, the Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor. Burial will take place in the church cemetery, professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. Family will receive visitations at the residence.
She was born in the rural farming community of Darlington County near Hartsville, a daughter of the late Arthur and Fila Bell Fox Jackson. She was reared by her maternal grandparents, the late Willie Bogan and the late Jessie Bell Edwards Fox. She attended the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Butler High School with the class of 1947. She continued her pursuit of knowledge by attending Morris College. She was employed by the State of Maryland in it's department of Social Services. After retirement from the Dept. of Social Service with more than 32 years tenure, she moved back to her native Hartsville. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and Browns Memorial Baptist Church of Baltimore, MD.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Levern Crowell and Bernard P. Crowell both of Baltimore, MD; three daughters, Felita Denise (William) Scott, Wanda Crowell and Pamela Crowell all of Baltimore, MD; one brother, Arthur (Queenester) Jackson of Darlington; 13 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren.
Roy H. Lowrimore Sr.
CHERAW -- Roy H. Lowrimore Sr., 92, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at a hospital in Cheraw. born in Horry County, he was the son of the late Calvin and Barzilla Sing Lowrimore. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church having served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. Mr. Lowrimore was a WWII Army veteran.
Survivors are: His wife of 73 years, Lillie Maude Hopkins Lowrimore, Cheraw; son Roy Lowrimore Jr., Hickory N.C.; daughter Norma L. Lundy, Darlington; daughter Artha L. Sompayrac, Hannahan; sister Mary Chavis, Murrells Inlet; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson Michael Sompayrac, 4 brothers and 6 sisters.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw.
Memorials to: Westside Baptist Church Building Fund, 105 Claremont Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Kenneth Lanning
CLEWISTON, Fla. -- Kenneth Lanning, 65, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at Lee Memorial Health Systems, Ft. Myers, Fla., after an illness.
Mr. Lanning was born in Florence, a son of the late John Duffy and Lila Parrott Lanning. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Lanning Jr. of Clewiston, Fla.; a daughter, Donna Murdock of Clewiston, Fla.; a brother, John D. Lanning Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Marjorie L. (Jimmy) McAllister and Beatrice L. Beasley, both of Lake City; and two grandchildren, Brenda Murdock and Donivan Murdock, both of Clewiston, Fla.
Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in Grace Free Will Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Frank Brown Sr.
BISHOPVILLE -- Funeral services for Frank Brown Sr., 68, who died Oct. 6, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at 3 p.m. from the Bible Truth Holiness Church. The Rev. Hazel Mixon will officiate. Burial will be in the Concord Methodist Church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Brown was born in Lee County, a son of the late Elisha Walter Brown Sr. & Lila Bell Tidwell Brown.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Ann Knotts, Bishopville; daughters Michelle Springs, Pamplico and Mary Williamson, Lake City; brothers Eugene Brown, Bishopville; Jimmy Brown, Florence; sisters Diane Atkinson, Mary Caples, Pauline Werline, Bishopville, and Clarissa Epps, New Zion; 5 grandchildren.
Rudine Holmes Williams
FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Rudine Holmes Williams will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at New Ebenezer Baptist Church with an Obsequies at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Tifton, GA on Saturday, Sept. 22. The burial will take place at Tift Memorial Gardens in Tifton, GA. The Wake and Ivy Beyond The Wall Ceremony will take place this evening 7 p.m. at J.O. Smith Memorial Chapel.
Rudine Holmes Williams, 63, died Saturday Sept. 15, 2001 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Williams was born in Tifton, Georgia on Aug. 28, 1938 to the late Ethel Lou Cobb Holmes and Reverend Pleaman Lee Holmes. She graduated form Tift County High School in 1956 and received her undergraduate degree in English and Elementary Education from Savannah State College. She later received her master’s degree in bi-lingual education from Kean University in Union, New Jersey.
Mrs. Williams began her teaching career in Cairo, Georgia. She then traveled with her husband and children to Frankfurt, Germany where she taught in Rhine Main Air Force Base. In 1970, she was her family settled in Hillside, New Jersey. She then had a distinguished 28 year career in education within the Newark Public Schools System in Newark, New Jersey. During her tenure, Mrs. Williams served in a variety of positions culminating as a Basic Skills’ Coordinator and Staff Developer. Upon her retirement and relocation to South Carolina in 1998, she began teaching English as a second language and adult education part-time at the Poyner School in Florence, South Carolina. On the spiritual side, she was a member of and elder of Elizabeth Avenue Weequahic Presbyterian Church in Newark, New Jersey where she sang in the Chancel Choir and was a soloist for nearly three decades. Upon retirement, she joined New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina.
Mrs. Williams was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Newark Teachers Bowling League and the Les Femmes. Mrs. Williams leaves the following to cherish her memories: her husband, Johnny Williams of Florence, South Carolina; two daughters, Attorney El-Rhonda Williams (Arnold) Alston of Burlington, New Jersey and Mrs. La-Dine Williams (Rev. Norman) Gamble of Greeleyville, South Carolina; six sisters, Helen (Taylor) Adkins, Silver Spring, MD, Bertha Blanchard, Columbus, GA, Nadine Pittman, NY, NY, Rev. Mildred (James) Denson, Macon, Georgia, Alnita (Quentin) Foster, Springfield, MA, and Naomi (Darryl) Washington, Rahway, NJ; three brothers, Machael (Nancy) Holmes, Nathaniel Holmes and Larry Holmes all of Miami, FL; a dear friend, Bertha Dowers Webb, Tifton, GA; four grandchildren, Ti-Esha Williams-Vaughn, Briana Alston, Cambridge Gamble, and Na-Dya Gamble; five brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is receiving friends at 3277 West Hampton Pointe, Florence.

Kenneth Earl Mance Jr.
MANNING -- Kenneth Earl Mance Jr., a son of Georgia Moye Mance and Kenneth E. Mance Sr., was born in Florence, South Carolina, October 7, 1977.
Kenneth was a member of Trinity AME Church, Manning, South Carolina. During his youth, he served on the Children's Choir, Usher Board and with the Young People's Department.
He graduated from Manning High School with honors and accepted a four-year athletic scholarship to Charleston Southern University and earned a degree in business.
Kenneth was a teacher and assistant coach with Florence County School District 4. He taught business education and coached football, basketball and track.
Kenneth also played professional football for one year with the Charleston Swamp Fox Arena Football League.
Kenneth Earl Mance Jr. took his place on the right hand side of our Lord and Savior on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001.
Kenneth is survived by his parents, Georgia Moye Mance and Kenneth E. Mance Sr.; a devoted brother and sister, Brian K. Mance of Clemson and Keyna L. Mance of Yonkers, N.Y.; and a niece, Kadijah Mance of Yonkers, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Timmonsville School Athletic Department.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Trinity AME Church, Ribgy Street, Manning with the Rev. John A. Frederick, pastor. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens in Florence.
Fleming-Delaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of services.
Ronald 'Ronnie' Eugene Manship
CONWAY - Ronald "Ronnie" Eugene Manship, 42, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001. Mr. Manship was born in Darlington, a son of the late Ralph and Margaret Hobson Manship.
Surviving are his wife, Terry Manship of Conway; three sons, Jimmy Manship and Joey Manship, both of Timmonsville, and Ricky Manship of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Herbert Manship and Barney Manship, both of Darlington, and James Manship of Lexington; two sisters, Mary Benton of Florence and Frances Kelly of Norcross, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 from Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Welch officiating.
Mary Alice McClain
LAMAR -- Mrs. Mary Alice Shaw McClain of 105 Porter Street died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Johnny Coe, officiating. Burial will take place in the Plaza Memorial Gardens in Lamar and professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Lamar. The family will receive visitations at the residence.
Mrs. McClain was born in the Lamar community of Darlington County, a daughter of the late Murray Shaw Sr. and Margaret Sowells Shaw. She attended the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Spaulding High School with the Class of 1981. She was married
to Patrick McClain Sr. and this union was blessed with two children. She was employed with the Days Inn Motel chain and was a member of Mary Magdalene Freewill Baptist Church. A brother, Sammie Lee McCullough preceded her in death.
Survivors include her faithful husband, Patrick McClain Sr. of the home; a son, Patrick Terrell McClain Jr. and a daughter, Michelle Antoinette McClain, both of the home; six brothers, James McCullough and Vestine (Eleanor) McCullough, both of Baltimore, Md., Moses (Margie) Shaw of Lamar, William (Vicky) Shaw of Hartsville, Benjamin Shaw and Murray Shaw Jr. both of Patterson, N.J.; ten sisters, Addie Mae McCullough of Hartsville, Sallie Anderson and Emma Jane McCullough, both of Baltimore, Md, , Lou Ella Wilson of Sumter, Elizabeth (Jimmie) Garner of Lamar, Barbara Ann Shaw of Darlington, Joanna (Johnnie) Coe of Florence, Patsy (Isaiah) Benjamin and Mary Shaw, both of Patterson, N.J. and Jerline Troutman of Plainfield, N.J.; father-in-law, Thomas McClain and mother-in-law, Vermell McClain, both of Lamar, SC.

COLUMBIA -- Services for Jim Marion Cherry, 93, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel, Columbia. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Foundation of South Carolina, 190 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29210; the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, 2100 Twin Church Road, Florence, S.C. 29501; or to the South Carolina Lions Eye Bank, 110 Medical Circle, West Columbia, S.C. 29169.
Mr. Cherry, husband of the late Anne Dyer Cherry, to whom he was married
for 64 years, died Monday, Oct. 8. born July 2, 1908, in Sumter, he was the son of Martha Orilee Thomasson Cherry and Robert Stough Cherry. He was a graduate of Sumter High School and earned an A.B. degree in English from Furman University in 1929. He later received the M.Ed. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also pursued additional graduate study.
He was a school administrator in Edgefield County and later was Superintendent of the John DeLa Howe School in McCormick. In 1945 he moved to Columbia, where he lived until 1992, when he and his wife entered a retirement home in Florence. He served as director of public relations for the South Carolina Education Association, superintendent and business manager of the South Carolina Area Trade Schools, chief of the Division of the Blind for the S.C. Department of Public Welfare, and president of the Baptist Foundation of South Carolina.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Columbia, where he was chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School superintendent, and teacher of the Jim Cherry Bible Class. His civic activities included positions as district governor of Lions International and as international director from 1961 to 1963. He was also a director of the South Carolina Cancer Society, president of the South Carolina State Employees Association and a director of the S.C. Rehabilitation Association. He was a member of the S.C. Lions Sight Conservation Association Board, the YMCA Board and the chairman of the board of Ocean City Life Insurance Company.
He is survived by four sons, Jim Marion Cherry Jr. of Kingstree, George William Cherry and Robert Bernard Cherry of Sumter and Charles Maurice Cherry of Greenville; a sister, Bleka Anita Cherry Kolb of Liberty; nine grandchildren; five great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
