Wilson C. 'Uncle Son' Singletary

JOHNSONVILLE -- Funeral services for Mr. Wilson C. "Uncle Son" Singletary will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 from Greater St. Paul Methodist Church in the Vox Community of Johnsonville with the Rev. Bernard Timmons officiating and burial in the church cemetery, directed by Green's Funeral Home of Lake City.

Mr. Singletary, 70, died Monday, Oct. 8. He was born in Leo, a son of the late Frank and Eula Singletary.

He was a member of Greater St. Paul Church, a retired farmer, a gospel singer and a member of Good Hope Masonic Lodge No. 376.

Surviving are his wife, Annie Mae Barr Singletary of the home; four sons, James (Anna) Singletary of Shalimar, Fla., Willie Singletary of Miami, David Singletary of Knoxville, Tenn., and Esaw Singletary of Australia; two daughters, Liza (Alfred) Coaxum of North Charleston and Lula Bell (Virgil) Mobley of Kileen, Texas; a sister, Jerena Johnson of Lake City; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; nieces; and nephews.

Samuel Fredrick 'Sammy' Bailey

HEATH SPRINGS -- Mr. Samuel Fredrick "Sammy" Bailey, 41, of 602 Harlington Circle, Hartsville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001. He was born Sept. 28, 1960, in Lancaster, a son of Olin S. and Ethel J. Bailey, and the owner and operator of Bailey Landscaping in Hartsville.

Funeral service were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Rich Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Brooks Walker. Burial was in Rich Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife, Lisa S. Bailey, a son, Caleb J. Bailey, and a daughter, Ashley N. Bailey, all of Bennettsville; his mother and father, Olin S. and Ethel J. Bailey of Heath Springs; a brother, Mr. Olin M. Bailey and his wife, Sharon, of Heath Springs; two sisters, Ms. Loretta Bailey and Mrs. Teresa Knight and her husband, Mark, all of Heath Springs; and his grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Mae Bailey of Heath Springs.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, and other times from the home of Olin and Ethel Bailey, 1799 Baskins Hill Road, Health Springs.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Redeem the Land Fund, c/o Rich Hill Baptist Church, 1557 E. Doc Garris Road, Heath Springs, S.C. 29058.

Betty Bass Lynch

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Betty Bass Lynch, 70, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bill Perry will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Billie Hardee Boys Home in Darlington.

Mrs. Lynch, widow of William Lynch, died Wednesday, Oct. 10. born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late James Edward and Allene Chapman Bass. She was a member of Hartsville Community Fellowship.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Donna Lynch, Bucky and Cookie Lynch, Billy Joe and Lori Lynch, all of Hartsville; brothers, James Edward Bass and William Eugene Bass, both of Hartsville; sister, Patsy Newsome of Newport, Tenn.; and grandchildren, Jamie Lynch, Elisia Canning, Emmie Lynch, Carley Lynch, Brian Lynch, Shelly Lynch, Russell Lynch, Channing Lynch, Grace Lynch, Leah Lynch and Benjamin "Samson" Lynch.

Catherine Baxley McAlister

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Catherine Baxley McAlister, 81, who died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Westview Memorial cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. McAlister was born in Georgetown County a daughter of the late Charlie Baxley and Gertrude Baxley Conlon. She was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, William C. McAlister of Hartsville; three daughters, Nancy Kinlaw of Beaufort, Carolyn Fletcher of Raleigh, N.C., and Margie McAteer of Ellijay, Ga.; a brother, Rubin Baxley of Los Angeles; a half-brother, John Conlon of Charleston; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee.

Sammie Lee Harrell

FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mr. Sammie Lee Harrell, 43, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001 in Monumental Baptist Church with Elder Earl McCullough of Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Effingham, directed by Backus Funeral Home.

Mr. Harrell passed Tuesday, Oct. 9 after an illness. He was born in Florence County a son of Mrs. Olivia Harrell and the late Mr. James Harrell.

He attended Wilson High School. Then he entered the JOB Corps where he obtained his profession as a painter by trade. He was a member of Progressive Holiness Church.

Mr. Harrell was employed by Golden Corral of Florence and La-Z-Boy, also in Florence, for 18 years.

He was truly devoted to his wife and children. To share his memories, he leaves his loving and caring wife of 21 years, Mrs. Fhannesia Smith Harrell; three daughters, Ihashatia Harrell, Ilaya-Menna Harrell, and Ihlonda Harrell, all of the home; two sons, Ihakievon Harrell of the home and Trey Anderson of Florence; his mother, Mrs. Olivia E. Harrell of Florence; three sisters; seven brothers; two grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Naomi Smith of Florence; a sister-in-law, Rose (Willie) Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Riley Gene Smith and Willis (Debra) McCullough; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

The family will be receiving family and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the chapel and other times at the home, 911 Nellie St., Pine Forest Subdivision, Florence.

Mary Ruth Hill Byrd

DARLINGTON -- Mary Ruth Hill Byrd, 61, of 2121 Indian Branch Road, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at 4 PM in the chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Indian Branch cemetery.

Mrs. Hill was born in Darlington County on December 22, 1939, a daughter of the late A. C. and Rosa Lee Odom Hill. She was the widow of the late Rufus Byrd, Jr. Mrs. Byrd was a member of the Indian Branch United Methodist Church and worked for Jack's Shoes for many years.

Survivors include one son, Samuel Albert "Sammy" (Kathy) Byrd of Darlington, three sisters, Brenda (Lawrence) Melton, Joyce (Howard) Goodson, and Odean (Robert) Ralley, all of Darlington, and two grandchildren; Jeffery and Amy Byrd of Darlington.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 11, 2001 from 6 -- 8 PM.

Elbert L. Hardee

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Elbert L. Hardee, 83, of Chapel Hill NC died Tuesday at his residence after an illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 PM in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Hardee was born in Cumberland County NC. He was the son of the late Isaac and Bessie Hardee. Papa as his family affectionately knew him was not a real complex person. He loved his lord having been a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for over 68 years. He loved his family having been married to Wilma Merritt Hardee for over 63 years. He loved his country having served in the United States Navy during WWII and he loved his job having retired from the United States Post Office. Papa had many other accomplishments in his 83 years but these were all that mattered to a very simple man.

Papa had a big family. He had four brothers and two sisters all from around the Chapel Hill area. He had one son, three daughters, fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. His son, Jim (Billie) Hardee lives in Darlington as well as four of his grandchildren, Jimmie (Natalie) Hardee, Todd (Jenny) Hardee, Sam (John) Baumbauch, and Niki (Wayne) Chapman. Also living in Darlington is four of his great grandchildren, Templin, Merritt, Sandy, and Sarah.

If you would like to make a memorial in memory of Papa please do so to any charity you choose. However, if we may suggest a good cause, we suggest memorials be made to the Billie Hardee Home for Boys, Post Office Box 617, Darlington, SC 29540

Gloria Ritchie Reid

FLORENCE -- Gloria Ritchie Reid, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Mt. Hope cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reid was born in Mt. Pleasant, N.C., a daughter of the late Frank and Alma Murray Ritchie. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Reid Sr., who died in 1972.

Surviving are three sons, Ritchie Reid and Frank (Kimberly) Reid, both of Florence, and Joseph B. Reid Jr. of Myrtle Beach; sister, Dorothy Davidson of Charlotte; granddaughter, Sara Catherine Reid; and aunt, Iona McKinney of Asheville, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reid, 831 Greenwing Teal Road, Florence.

Ann Coleman Seay

SPARTANBURG -- Loving mother and precious Saint of God, Ann Coleman Seay, 74, of 625 Riley Court, Spartanburg, went to be with the Lord, Sept. 18, 2001 from her home. A native of Pacolet, she was the wife of the late Rev. Floyd Wilson Seay Sr. and daughter of the late John Thomas and Emma Kennedy Coleman. She as a faithful member of Arcadia Free Will Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Sunshine Sunday School Class.

Survivors include four daughters, Diane Conard and husband, Clarence of Spartanburg, Nannitra Baker and husband, Ed of Darlington, Robin Savage of Roebuck, and Janet Ballenger and husband, Jimmy of Inman; one son, Rev. Floyd "Buddy" Seay Jr., and wife, Vicki of Conway; two sisters, Inez Seay of Spartanburg, Louise Smith of Enoree; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Martin of Spartanburg, and son-in-law, Richard Savage.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Earl Hendrix, the Rev. Kevin Smith and the Rev. Floyd "Buddy" Seay Jr. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family is at the home of a daughter, Janet Ballenger, 140 Hickory Hills Dr., Inman, SC 29349, (864) 578-6974.

Harvey C. Goodyear

NICHOLS -- Harvey C. Goodyear, 82, of Nichols, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001 at Marion County Medical Center. Mr. Goodyear was born in Horry County. He was the son of the late Carl B. and Annie M. Collins Goodyear and was a retired farmer. Mr. Goodyear was predeceased by his first and second wife, Elizabeth Zurcher Goodyear and Sara Fowler Goodyear.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 at Meares Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001 at Meares Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery.

Mr. Goodyear is survived by one son, Carl C. Goodyear of Nichols, SC; three daughters, Ginger Driggers of Nichols, and Rosa Lee Foley and Peggy Strickland, both of Florence; eight grandchildren, Robert King, Gina Ham, Johnny Foley, Ronda Brown all of Florence, Dustin Goodyear, Brittany Goodyear, Stephen Goodyear, Lisa Driggers, all of Nichols, SC and six great grandchildren.

Meares Funeral Home of Mullins is serving the family of Mr. Goodyear.

Annie F. Matthews

COWARD -- Mrs. Annie Fryar Matthews, 94, widow of Linwood W. Matthews died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at her residence after an illness.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Florence County a daughter of the late Bardin and Sarah Harrell Fryar. She was a former employee of Florence Manufacturing Company, a member of Ariel Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for 66 years and a member of the UMU. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the V.F. W.

Survivors include two sons, Elwood Matthews of Coward and Jimmie Matthews of Goose Creek; one daughter, Uldine M. Denham of Sarasota, Florida; two brothers, Jimmy Fryar of Lake City and Thomas Fryar of Florence; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001 in the Ariel Baptist Church with burial in the Matthews cemetery, Coward.

Memorials may be made to Ariel Baptist Church, P.O. Box 86, Coward, SC 29530.

The family will have visitation from 7-9 p.m. Saturday evening in the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City is in charge.

Anna Mae 'Knute' Johnson

NEW JERSEY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Mae "Knute" Johnson will be conducted at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 239 George Street, New Brunswick. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noon at the church. Mrs. Johnson died Oct. 10 at the Saint Peter's University Medical Center in New Brunswick.

Arrangements are being handled by Anderson Funeral Service, New Brunswick, NJ. Local announcements are being handled by Ideal Funeral Parlor, Florence.

born in Florence, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Arthur and Idella T. Johnson.

Survivors include one son, William Allen Johnson; daughters, Delinda Rose Johnson, Brenda Johnson and Allyson Johnson; three sisters, Lillie J. Burch, Rose Thomas, Idella T. Richardson; one brother, Arthur Johnson Jr. and nine grandchildren.

John William 'Buddy' Burroughs

KINGSTREE -- John William "Buddy" Burroughs, 63, died Friday at his residence. Mr. Burroughs was born in Marion, a son of Mrs. Maggie Hughes Burroughs and the late William R. Burroughs. He was a graduate of Andrews High School and was a retired bridge supervisor for the South Carolina Dept. of Transportation. He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Baptist faith. Mr. Burroughs was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Thomas Burroughs and a son, Thomas R. Burroughs.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Georgetown, a daughter, Linda Thompson of Kingstree; four sons, Joey Burroughs of Murrells Inlet, Johnny Burroughs, Timmy Burroughs and Scottie Burroughs all of Kingstree; a sister, Mary B. Skipper of Andrews; an adopted brother, Richard Casselman of Andrews; 13 grandchildren, Kelly Wilson, Chris Thompson, Ryan Thompson, John Davis Burroughs, Sheena Burroughs, Joseph Burroughs, Josh Burroughs, William Burroughs, Farren Burroughs, Tatum Burroughs, Scott Burroughs, Trish Burroughs and Alani Thompson.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church or Lane United Methodist Church.
