FLORENCE -- Lawrence "Larry" Weintraub, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 at his residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Beth Israel Congregation Synagogue, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Florence Jewish cemetery.
Mr. Weintraub was born in New York, N.Y., a son of the late Benjamin and Rose Zahl Weintraub. He was a World War II Veteran, serving with the U.S. Army in India and China. A resident of Timmonsville and Florence for 40 years, Mr. Weintraub owned a chain of retail stores, including Larry's Department Store and Florence Discount Store.
Mr. Weintraub was active in the Beth Israel Congregation, serving as former president and instructor in the Sunday School. He also was chairman of the Shirley and Arthur Seigal Education Fund.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Polan Weintraub of Florence; a son, Richard Weintraub of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Gail Driebe of Atlanta; a brother, Mortimer Weintraub of Long Branch, N.J.; a sister, Adele Rubin of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
Dandrea V. James Harris
NEW YORK -- Dandrea V. James Harris was a victim of the New York City World Trade Center assault.
She was a granddaughter of the late Major James Jr.; great granddaughter of the late Major and Rosa James Sr. and sister of Michael A. James of 715 W. Sumter Street, Florence.
Arrangements will be announced by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home of Florence.
The family will receive friends at 715 W. Sumter Street.
Joe Wiggins
HARTSVILLE -- Joseph Lawton Wiggins, 84, a long-time Hartsville community leader, newspaper owner, publisher and editor and Hartsville businessman died at his home, Saturday evening, Oct. 6, 2001. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the family's house at Sail Cub Drive on Lake Robinson.
born in Hartsville, S.C., he was the son of the late A. Lee M. and Pauline Lawton Wiggins. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School, attended The Citadel and earned a bachelor of aeronautical engineering from the Georgia School of Technology in 1939. He was president of Chi Psi Fraternity his senior year of college. For several years he worked in various positions as an aeronautical engineer and he returned to Hartsville in 1948 to become the publisher of The Hartsville Messenger and the president of the Hartsville Publishing Company. Known for his hard hitting, conservative editorial, he was a strong proponent of a free and independent press. He was the president of the S.C. Press Association in 1958-59 and was recognized leader in the non-daily press of South Carolina.
In addition to the Hartsville Publishing Company, he was also the past president of the Hartsville Broadcasting Company and a past president of Cable TV of Hartsville. He also served on the board of directors of the Trust Company of South Carolina from 1959 to 1968.
In 1965, Mr. Wiggins was honored for his leadership in the Hartsville community by being named the Citizen of the Year. He was extremely active in Hartsville, serving as a director in the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce and as the president of the Chamber in 1962. He was a past president of the Hartsville Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow with the organization. Many institutions in Hartsville benefited from Joe Wiggins' leadership. He joined with other civic leaders in the 1950s and early 1960s to form the Untied Fund of Hartsville, which has evolved into the Hartsville United Way. He was chairman of the Darlington County Planning Commission, chairman of the Housing Authority of Hartsville and chairman of the advisory board of the Hartsville Township Memorial Library Association.
Mr. Wiggins had a strong interest in health planning and served as an advisory council member for the South Carolina Comprehensive Health Planning. He was also a past member of the statewide Health Coordinating Council and a past chairman of the Pee Dee Regional Health Systems Agency.
One of his greatest interests in Hartsville was the former Byerly Hospital. He was elected to the board of trustees of Byerly Hospital in 1955 and was chairman of the board from 1960 to 1962. From 1965 to 1970 he served as the chairman of the Byerly Hospital Building Fund.
In 1987, Coker College awarded Mr. Wiggins an honorary doctorate degree from his strong support of he college and his decades of leadership in the Hartsville community.
Joseph L. Wiggins is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Campbell Wiggins; a son, Joseph Lawton Wiggins Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna F. Wiggins; nephews, Douglas L. Bush of Hartsville, David M. Bush of Smyrna, Georgia and John A. Belding Jr.. of Rockville, Maryland.
Gordon C. McLaughlin
FLORENCE -- Gordon C. McLaughlin, 83, of Florence, died Monday, September 24, 2001 in Carolinas Hospital System. born June 14, 1918, he was the husband of the late Ann Meadors McLaughlin.
Mr. McLaughlin retired in 1982 from Peoples Natural Gas Company of SC. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church; Christian Family Sunday School Class; attended Clemson College; was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre; and a charter member of Pee Dee Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathy L. Anderson; sister, Cynthia Alderman of Florence; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Richard Donald of Arroygrande, California; two half brothers, Tommie McLaughlin and Jerry McLaughlin of Augusta, GA. Also surviving are a granddaughter, Sherry Edmonds; a grandson, John M. Anderson; and three great grandchildren, John M. Anderson, Jr., Nicole Anderson, and Michael Edmonds, Jr.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 26, 2001 from 6-8pm, at Cain-Poston Funeral Home, 512 West Second Loop Road, Florence, SC. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 27, 2001 at 11:00am, at Cain-Poston Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Mount Hope cemetery. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church Capital Fund or Carolinas Hospice, S. Irby Street, Florence, SC.
Funeral services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.
Daniel Bennett
FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Daniel "Tacker Man" Bennett will be conducted 1 p.m. on Tuesday at House of Prayer, 609 Oakland Avenue, Florence. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery. He died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in the VA Hospital in Columbia.
born in Florence County, he was a son of John Luther and Cecelia Burroughs Bennett. He attended the public schools of Florence County and was a 1966 graduate of Wilson High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Surviving besides his mother are two sons, Terrence Timmons Bennett and Gerard Bennett; brother, Oliver Wendell (Brenda) Bennett; four sisters, Bona (Steve) Gilliam, Clara (Solomon) Moses, Joan (Frank) Moses, Jeanette B. "Flo" Spears; one grandson; soul mate Cheryl Washington.

Glen David Oakley
FLORENCE -- Glen David Oakley, 56, of 4401 Bannockburn Road, Florence, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 23, 2001, in a Greenwood hospital from injuries sustained in a work related accident last week.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Oakley was born in Florence County, a son of the late Jim and Bernice Conyers Oakley. He was an employee of Florence Steel Erectors and attended the Amanda Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are his wife, Gracie Lee Miles Oakley of Florence; three step-children, Robin Woodberry of Marion, Johnny Alan Carter and Dustin Earl Carter, both of Florence; two brothers, Ronald Oakley of Brownsville, Texas and Don Oakley of Florence; four sisters, Frankie Oakley, Naomi Edmonds and Nadine Morris, all of Florence, and Janice Fisher of Manning; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
Allan Porter Blum
CONWAY -- Allan Porter Blum, 49, of Buttercup Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001 at Conway Hospital.
Mr. Blum was born in Marion, a son of Morris Solomon and Elizabeth Porter Blum. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conway and graduated from Marion High School in 1970. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 and received a B.A. in Social and Behavioral Science and Masters in Public Administration in 1975. Mr. Blum was employed by Pee Dee Regional Planning Council in Florence from 1975 to 1979 and was City Administrator of Bishopville from 1979 to 1985. He was also City Administrator of Conway from 1985 to 1993 and Assistant City Administrator of Myrtle Beach from 1993 to present. Mr. Blum was a former member of the Waccamaw Sertoma Club and was active in the United Way of Horry County. He was also Co-Chair of the 1997 Dixie Youth World Series.
Surviving in addition to his parents of Marion are his wife, Kathy W. Blum of Conway; a son, Justin Blum of Columbia and Conway; a daughter, Megan Blum of Charleston and Conway; a brother, Ricky Blum and his wife Theresa of Pleasant View, Nichols; two sisters and brothers-in-laws, Diane and Bill Beane of Spartanburg, Cindy and Robin Rogers of Marion.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the First Baptist Church of Conway with the Rev. Steve Hadden officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill cemetery, Marion, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Gloria Ritchie Reid
FLORENCE -- Gloria Ritchie Reid, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Mt. Hope cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Mrs. Reid was born in Mt. Pleasant, N.C., a daughter of the late Frank and Alma Murray Ritchie. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Reid Sr., who died in 1972.
Surviving are three sons, Ritchie Reid and Frank (Kimberly) Reid, both of Florence, and Joseph B. Reid Jr. of Myrtle Beach; sister, Dorothy Davidson of Charlotte; granddaughter, Sara Catherine Reid; and aunt, Iona McKinney of Asheville, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reid, 831 Greenwing Teal Road, Florence.
Woodrow Clayton Vealey
FLORENCE -- Woodrow Clayton Vealey, 80, of Florence, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001 in Heritage Home of Florence. born Aug. 21, 1921, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Arthur and Velva Mae Stone Vealey. He was the husband of Lillie Mae Pauley Vealey.
Mr. Vealey was a member of Florence Baptist Temple. He worked for 36 years with Appalachian Power Electrical Company and was an Army WWII Veteran.
In addition to his wife, Lillie Mae, he is survived by one son, Michael W. Vealey of Fayetteville, NC; three sisters, Velma Gayton, Eva Cline and Helen Dixon, all of West Virginia. Also surviving are two grandsons, Michael Vealey and Matthew (Megan) Vealey, both of Florida.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Cain-Poston Funeral Home, 512 West Second Loop Road, Florence. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 at Cain-Poston Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Mount Hope cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Gideon's International.
Funeral services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.
Owen O. Schweers III
FLORENCE -- Owen O'Connor Schweers III, 41, of Florence, died Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001, at his residence after an illness.
Memorials services will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Florence. The family will greet friends immediately following the services in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hope for the Pee Dee, P.O. Box 653, Florence, S.C. 29503 or to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29506.
Percy Donell Cobb
FLORENCE -- Percy Donell Cobb, 67, of 111 S. Wallace Road, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in Florence National cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Honor will be by Florence Moose Lodge 2566.
Mr. Cobb was born in Caswell County, N.C., a son of Zachariah H. and Beulah Teal Cobb. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Florence Moose Lodge No. 2566. He was retired as superintendent of maintenance for Goodyear, Inc. of Asheboro, N.C., and had been employed by Celetex in Latta.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Adrian Hugh Cobb.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Sue Buchanan Cobb of Florence; a daughter, Cindy Moore of Burlington, N.C.; two sons, Randall Cobb and Douglas Cobb, both of Burlington, N.C.; a sister, Flora Rainey of Elon College, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Donna Sherrill of Seneca, Jonna Patillo of California and Karmann Osborne of Longs; four grandchildren; and four step grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Florence Moose Lodge No. 2566, 301-B E. Palmetto St., Florence, S.C. 29506.
