TIMMONSVILLE -- Jerry "Wayne" Broach, 50, died Oct. 7, 2001, in a Florence hospital, after a long illness. He was born in Florence County, a son of Marion G. Broach and the late Carrie Morris Broach.
He was a graduate of Southside High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.
Surviving are: His father of Florence; his wife, Janice Anderson Broach, Timmonsville; two sons, Jerry "Wayne" Broach Jr. and Jason A. Broach, both of Timmonsville; two daughters, Melissa B. Filion and Susan D. Broach, both of Timmonsville; their mother Sarah Filyaw Broach, Timmonsville; two step-sons, Donald M. Anderson, and Kelvin D. Anderson, of Timmonsville; two step-daughters, Jacqueline Anderson, Timmonsville and Jennifer (Jason) Coker, Alcolu; a brother, Marion (Sandy) Broach, Timmonsville; a sister, Patricia (Tommy) King, Darlington; a special friend, Quan Trieu, Timmonsville and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, David R. Broach.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Byrd cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. today and at other times at the home of Marion G. Broach Sr., 3437 South Cashua Drive, Florence. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 267 Calhoun St. Charleston, S.C. 29401.
Richard Marion Thompson
TIMMONSVILLE -- Richard Marion Thompson, 76, died Sept. 23, 2001 at his home. He was born in Timmonsville, a son of the late Otto and Allie Hill Thompson. He retired from the U S. Coast Guard; and later was employed and retired from Lindley Appliance Company.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Timmonsville.
Surviving are his wife, Ada Ruth Broach Thompson; two sons, Terry (Lynn) Thompson, Locust Grove, Ga., and Michael (Nancy) Thompson, Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Martha (Steve) McLean, Florence and Tammy (Danny) Patrick, Darlington; a brother, Bob (Daisy) Thompson, Florence; a sister, Ila Kight, Timmonsville; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Ann Hughes Thompson, Timmonsville. He was predeceased by a brother, J. W. Thompson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 in the First Baptist Church of Timmonsville. Interment will be in the National cemetery at Florence directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Timmonsville.
Deborah Mixon
HARTSVILLE -- Mrs. Deborah Mixon of 1101 E. Home Ave., Apt 6-A died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Dials officiating and burial in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. Family will receive friends at the residence.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Beulah Bush Ellerbe and the late Eugene Ellerbe. She was educated in both New York and South Carolina public schools. She moved from New York to Hartsville some 32 years ago where she attended Butler High School with the class of 1972. She was married
early in life to Robert Mixon. Deborah was a machine operator for MafCo Industries of McBee and was also employed as a carpenter where she did building construction until her health declined.
Survivors in addition to her mother, Beulah Ellerbe of Brooklyn, N.Y., are three daughters, Melisha (Alex) Breland of Charlotte, N.C., Majury Harris and Mykah Mixon, both of Hartsville; a son, Sylvester Mixon of Hartsville; two sisters, Olivia (Anthony) Gilliam of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Phyllis Harris of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, Prentice Harris of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Timothy Shawn Ellerbe of Freeport, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Sherlane Breland of Charlotte, N.Y.; a grandson, Alex Breland Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; and an aunt, Helen (James) Sanders of New York City.
Allen Darryl Carter
DILLON -- Services for Allen Darryl Carter will be held 3 p.m. on Tuesday in East Dillon Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.
Mr. Carter, 41, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
born in Mullins, August 5, 1960, he was the son of Oscar L. Carter and Marilyn Lockemy Carter. He was a member of East Dillon Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. Oscar L. Carter of Florence, brother, Brandon "Dooner" Lee Carter of N. Augusta; grandmother, Nettie Lockemy Ivey of Dillon.
James L. Cooke
DOVER, DELAWARE -- James L. Cooke, 64, of Dover, Del. died Mon. Sept. 17, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover, Del. of heart failure.
Mr. Cooke was born June 26, 1937 in Florence, son of the late E. Boyd & Annie Laura Cooke.
He was a graduate of Delaware State University.
Mr. Cooke retired from the U.S. Air Force, the U.S Postal System & recently worked for Kent Oil Co.
He was a member of Whatcoat U.M. Church, Camden, Del., past president of the Camden-Wyoming Loins Club, umpire with the Camden-Wyoming Little League & past member of the Caesar Rodney School District Board of Education. Mr. Cooke enjoyed vacation on Lake Talon in Ontario, Canada at his summer cottage.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Irene Warden and brother Eddie G. Cooke Jr.
He is survived by his bride of 37 years Ruth, a daughter Catherine Cooke and son Jason Cooke both of Arlington, Va.; two brothers, Richard Cooke & wife Sybil of Anderson; Blease Cooke of Florence; a sister Dotsy Dias of Florence; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call Thurs. from 6-9 p.m. in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wayoming Ave., Wyoming, Del.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 16 N. Main St., Camden, Del. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery, Stockley, Del.

Wallace Lee
OLANTA -- Wallace Lee, age 70, died Oct. 15, 2001. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 at Olanta Church of God of Prophecy with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
born in Florence County, Mr. Lee was a son of the late Henry Steven Lee and Eula Hudson Lee. He was retired from Santee Print in Sumter.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Carmon Lee of Olanta; four daughters; Ellen (Thomas) Windham of Olanta, Emma (John) Morrison of Florence, Faye (A.Z.) Atkinson of Lynchburg, Connie (David) Casey of Scranton; sons, Otis (Jettie) Lee of Cades, Sammie (Patricia) Lee of Florence, and Ronnie (Amy) Lee of Scranton; two sisters, Carolyn (Elbert) Coleman of Lynchburg, and Nan (Melvin) Hickman of Manning; 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Carolyn Bell
HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Carolyn Bell, 78, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bev Kennedy and the Rev. Tim Tomlinson will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at her former residence near Lydia, 4338 Una Road. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., or Baptist Hospice, 301 Interstate Park, Montgomery, Ala. 36109.
Ms. Bell died Monday, Oct. 15. born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the Ralph and Elise Parham Bell. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher of the Gleaners Class for many years. She was a graduate of Coker College and was employed with The Kerfoots as a decorator for more than 30 years.
Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Frances Bell of Summerton; sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Donald Clark of Montgomery, Ala.; nieces and nephews, Donald Bell Clark of Hartsville, Carol Clark Pocock of Charleston, Fran Bell Green of Pawleys Island, Mandy McGee of Simpsonville, Martha Reynolds of Andrews, John Ducworth, Anne Davis Darby, William Bell Davis, Sara Rebecca Davis, Lynn Davis Weese and Robert Hepburn Davis, all of Summerton; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
A. Deloni Bigelow Sr.
FLORENCE -- Aurelius Deloni Bigelow Sr., 64, of Florence, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Bigelow was born in Pamplico, a son of the late Charlie Lucas and Audrey Prosser Bigelow. He retired in 1998 as clerk for CSX Railroad in Florence. He was a member of the Retired Railroad Employees Club, member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and the Asbury Sunday School Class. He was owner and operator of Repair Limited.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Luanne B. Taylor, who died in 1993.
Surviving are his wife, Ann H. Hicks Bigelow of Florence; children, Wanda B. Rudisil, A.D. "Del" (Carol) Bigelow, Michael L. (Lisa) Bigelow and Audrey A. Bigelow, all of Florence; a brother, Charlie M. Bigelow of Florence; five grandchildren, William T. (Maralind) Tucker Jr. of Surprise, Ariz., Misty M. Rudisil, Christopher D. Bigelow, Michael Lucas "Luke" Bigelow Jr. and Benjamin Z. Bigelow, all of Florence; and a great-grandchild, Austin Lee Tucker of Surprise, Ariz.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church, Florence.
L.B. (Elbert) Bartell
PAMPLICO -- Funeral services for Mr. L.B. Bartell will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001 at Pentecostal Apostolic United Church, Johnsonville. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Peoples Funeral Home of Pamplico.
Mr. Bartell, 70, died Monday, Nov. 26 in Cedar Towers Health Facility after an illness.
He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Arthur and Maybell Eaddy. He attended Florence County public schools. Mr. Bartell was a member of St. Luke AME Church, a member of St. Luke Masonic Lodge No. 171 and a veteran of the Korean War. He was employed by Royster Fertilizer for 26 years and retired from Farmers Grain in 1995.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Eva M. Bartell of the home; two sons, Elbert Arthur Bartell of Cartersville, Ga., and Rev. Gregory Leon Bartell of Florence; two daughters, Gail Medley Dupree of Santanan, Calif., and Deborah Ilene Bartell of the home; three brothers, Willie Bartell of Florence, L.J. (Barbara) Bartell of Johnsonville and Aaron (Patsy) Bartell of Bridgeport, Conn.; six sisters, Christine (Esaw) Lewis of Effingham, Eva (John) Brisco of Florence, Mary (Marion) Allison of Gresham, Lula Mae and Rosa Bartell of Hemingway and Martha (Jim) Elderidge of New York; a grand-uncle, Preston Eaddy of Stratford, Conn.; six aunts, Olean White of Johnsonville, Rosa Williams of Florence, Louise Hanna, Sadie Taylor and Rosa McGill of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1331 Black Street Road, Pamplico.
The casket will be placed in the church one hour prior to service.
Robert C. 'Bob' Watts
FLORENCE -- Robert "Bob" Charles Watts, 72, of 3227 S. Dingle Drive, Florence, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 28, 2001 at the residence of his stepson after an illness.
Mr. Watts was born in Florence, a son of Gertrude Watts Howard and the late Julius Benson Watts. He was a graduate of McClenaghan High School. He had worked at Tomlinson's Clothing Store and as manager of the Style Center. More recently he had worked as a salesman and bookkeeper of Creel Tire and Appliance Store.
He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers, Thomas M. Watts, Wallace S. Watts and S. Warren Watts.
Surviving are his wife, Jacquelyn "Jack" Ward Watts of Florence; his mother of Florence; a son, Robert C. Watts Jr. of Columbia; a daughter, Sylvia W. Cherry of Orangeburg; two stepsons, Ward Owens of Florence and Richard Owens Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Donna O'Neal of Rock Hill and Faye Bethel of Key West, Fla.; two brothers, J.B. (Gay) Watts of Greenville and David L. Watts of Florence; three sisters, Dorothy Watts Kroft of Hilton Head, Betty Watts (Taso) Stoupenos and Delores Watts Ivey, both of Florence; five grandchildren, Stacy Parker, Corey W. Owens, Richard Owens III, Robert Bethel and Jason Perez; seven great-grandchildren; and a special sister-in-law, Jerrolyn Ward "Jerry" Whitehead of Florence.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of Larry and Stacy Parker, 1766 Progress St., Florence.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial may be made to Carolinas Hospice, Florence.
Glenn Keith 'Rocky' Lane
DARLINGTON -- Glenn Keith "Rocky" Lane, 80, of 248 Woods St., Darlington died Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at his residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 2 PM in the chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Garden. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, November 30 from 6 to 8 PM.
Mr. Lane was born in Florence County, a son of the late Belton O'Neal Annis Parnell Lane. He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Lane was a charter member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. After 36 years of service, he retired from James Rivers and enjoyed woodworking, refinishing furniture and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Doris T. Lane of the home, one son; Glenn Belton (Kristina) Lane of Darlington, and one daughter; Anice (Richard) Etz of St. Louis, Mo.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
Edwin Eugene Grice
TEXARKANA, Texas -- Edwin Eugene Grice, 41, husband of Mary Steifer Grice, of Texarkana, Texas died Monday, November 26, 20001 at his residence. born December 11, 1959, in Florence, South Carolina, he was the son of Sara Ellen Hanna Dean and the late Vernon Eugene Grice.
Mr. Grice attended Francis Marion University and was employed with Union Pacific Railroad.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two children, Benjamin Eugene Grice and Dana Renee Grice, both of Little Rock, Arkansas, and one step-son, Michael Caldwell of Arkansas. Also surviving are two sisters, Janet Grice Campbell of Sacramento, CA, Linda Grice Arnot of Pawley's Island, SC, and one step-brother, Gary James Dean, II, of Sufside Beach, SC. Preceding him in death in addition to his father are his maternal grandparents, Mollie and Cerel Hanna.
Graveside service will be Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 1:00pm in Mount Hope cemetery.
Mr. Grice will remain at Cain-Poston Funeral Home until taken to the cemetery for services.
Fred Graham
FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mr. Fred Graham will be held on Thursday at 3 p.m. from Jordan Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Olanta with the Rev. K. L. Gibson officiating and burial in the Byrd cemetery at Scranton directed by Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City, S.C.Mr. Graham, 58, died on Sunday, Sept. 16. He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Sam and Elveta Frierson Graham.
He was married
to the former Miss Annette Peterson.
He was predeceased by a brother, Troy Graham and a companion, Catherine McDowell.
Surviving are three daughters, Antoinette (Rev. Tracy) McFadden and Danette McGill both of Florence, Dr. Nanette Graham of Hampton, Va.; four sisters, Oretha (Sammy) McElveen of Norfolk, VA, Letha Harrison and Estelle (Larry) Brand both of Turbeville, S.C., and Elther L. (Stanley) Fulmore of Olanta, S.C.; two brothers, Roosevelt (Veronica) Graham of Norfolk, VA and Curtis (Gloria) Graham of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Nicaela, Tracy, Danika and Joshua; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
