Corinth Gamble Lewis

FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Corinth Beatrice Gamble Lewis will be noon Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery directed by Smith's Funeral Home.

She died Saturday, Dec. 1 at San Jose Medical Center, San Jose, Calif. Corinth was born on May 28, 1922 in Summerton, to the late Mr. William P. Gamble and Mrs. Hattie F. Gamble.

She was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church. She was educated in the public schools of Florence and furthered her education at Morris College.

She lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for 40 years, and on March 5, 1953, she was joined in holy wedlock to the late John Major Lewis. She was a faithful member of Bridge Street AWME Church and worked in the New York City Public School System as a Para Professional.

Upon retiring Corinth and John returned to Florence and renewed her membership at Mt. Zion. She served on Stewardess Board No. 1, and was a member of the Richard Allen Cub, the Church school and the proud chairperson of the Children's Nursery. She gave back unselfishly to the community by working in the Soup Kitchen. She also assisted in a local day care center.

Declining health necessitated a relocation to San Jose, Calif., where she lived the last three years of her life with her daughter and son-in-law.

Left to cherish her memories are her loving daughter, Monya, and attentive son-in-law, Robert Johnson of the home; a devoted son, Steven of Raleigh, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Ethel (Frank) Egleston of Florence and Delores (David) Alexander of Brooklyn, N.Y; two sisters, Louise Smith of Arlington, Va., and Elizabeth Black of Florence; two brothers, William Gamble and Wesley Gamble, both of Florence; sisters-in-law, Inez Lewis of Bronx, N.Y., Lucille Lewis of Columbia, Reverend C. Gillyard and a special sister-in-law and childhood friend, Osteen Gamble; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Wake service is from 7 to 8 p.m. today in J.O. Smith Memorial Chapel. The family also will receive friends other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Gamble, 258 Quinby Circle, Quinby.

Irene W. Amerson

LAMAR -- Irene Watford Amerson, 87, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 4, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at Lamar First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Lamar cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.

Mrs. Amerson was born in Darlington County the daughter of the late Maxie and Ada Jordan Watford. She was married to the late Raymond F. Amerson for 59 years. Mrs. Amerson was a farm wife and was employed by Dixie Cup for a number of years. She was a lifetime member of Lamar First Baptist Church, as well as the Gracie Kempson Group and the Moonbeam Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed cooking and caring for her family and friends.

Surviving are three daughters, Madeline (Max) Blount of Columbia, Myrtis (Willie) Hutchinson of Lamar and Emmie (Roy) Ham also of Columbia; a sister, Lucille W. Amerson of Lamar; a daughter-in-law, Mary A. Amerson of Lamar; a stepson, Dwight (Nancy) Langston of Timmonsville; two grandsons, Raymond Lavan (Jeanie) Amerson of Lamar and Mackey Amerson also of Lamar; 14 granddaughters; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Amerson was preceded in death by a son, Marvin J. "Jolly" Amerson, as well as three brothers and three sisters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lester B. Ford

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Lester B. Ford, 82, of 1355 Willis Ave., Lumberton, N.C., and formerly of Lake View, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake View.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at First Baptist Church in Lake View. Interment will follow at Lake View cemetery.

Surviving are Tracy Wayne Ford of Lake View, Jack Barfield Ford of Nichols, Vivian Atkinson of Fairmont, N.C., and Martha Smith of Lumberton, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Biggs Funeral Home, Lumberton.

Bobbie Jean Edwards

MARION -- Mrs. Bobbie Jean Edwards, 69, widow of John Lanneau Edwards, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in McMillan Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Devotion Gardens cemetery.

born in Marion, Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of the late Cletus and Cora T. James. She was retired from Russell Stover Candies and a member of McMillan Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors are two sons, John Lanneau Edwards Jr. of Marion and Steve Allen (Joy) Edwards of Marion; a daughter, Dorothy Edwards (Woodrow) Lane of Marion; five brothers, Fulton James of Petersburg, Va., Robert James of Lake Wales, Fla., Cecil James, Benny James and Jimmy James of Marion; a sister, Barbara Odom of Marion; and four grandchildren, Brad, Lance, Chris and Jamie Edwards.

Memorials may be made to McMillan Memorial Baptist Church, 1446 Old Corner Road, Marion, S.C. 29571.

Lillie Smith Blaton

FLORENCE -- Lillie Smith Blaton, 86, of Florence, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Blaton was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Lizzie McGee Smith. She was retired from Florence Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Hillside Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Blaton, who died in 1996, and by two brothers, Afton Smith and Larue Smith.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry (Martha) Blaton and Mitchell (Virginia) Blaton, both of Florence; a daughter, Dianne (Billy) James of Marion; a brother, Charles A. "Buddy" Smith Jr. of Coward; a sister, Edna Rouch of Scranton; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Hillside Free Will Baptist Church, 2405 S. Purvis Drive, Florence, S.C. 29505.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 in Hillside Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethany cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Blaton, 627 Cricklewood Drive, Florence.

Samuel Francis Drew Sr.

COLUMBIA -- Samuel Francis Drew Sr., 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital after an illness.

Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 in St. Phillip Catholic Church with burial in Lake City cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, followed by a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Everleen McCrea Lane

JOHNSONVILLE -- Everleen McCrea Lane, 82, wife of Tracy L. Lane, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 in the Methodist Manor in Florence after an illness.

Mrs. Lane was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late William Hugh McCrea and the late Lizzie Tisdale McCrea. She was a retired home economics and math teacher, a member of Johnsonville First Baptist Church, the Ruth Bible Class, a graduate of Kingstree High School and Winthrop College.

Surviving are her husband, Tracy L. Lane of the home; two daughters, Debbie (Lee) Clark of Augusta, Ga., and Robin (Douglas) Weismann of Monterey, Calif.; two grandchildren, Catherine Lane Clark of Augusta, Ga., and Scott Douglas Weismann of Monterey, Calif.; and a sister, Juanita (James) Wessel of Andrews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7 in Johnsonville First Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be in Garden of Devotion cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Arlen O'Neal Atkinson

TURBEVILLE -- Mrs. Arlen O. Atkinson, 82, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001 at her home after an illness. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at First Baptist Church of Turbeville with burial in the church cemetery.

born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Richardson Floyd and Nellie Iro Pigate. Mrs. Atkinson was a Retired Dry Goods Store Owner, and a homemaker. She was a member of the Turbeville First Baptist Church where she served as organist/pianist for more than 40 years as well as serving in various other positions faithfully for many years.

Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by a sister, Sybil F. Hall, and a brother, Carlyle Floyd.

Surviving is her husband, Donnie H. Atkinson Sr. of the home; two daughters, Sandra (Jerry) McElveen of New Zion and Carol (Freddie) Parker of Turbeville; two sons, Donnie (Cynthia) Atkinson Jr. of Cades and Tommy (Faye) Atkinson of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are requested to be sent to Turbeville First Baptist Church Fund or Building Fund.

Randolph Norment

HARTSVILLE -- Memorial services for Randolph McEachin Norment Jr., 79, will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins and Dr. Jim Daniels will officiate. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Saturday following the service in the Memorial Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 122 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, S.C. 29550.

Mr. Norment died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001. born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Randolph McEachin and Sara Cole White Norment Sr. He moved to Hartsville in 1954 and was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder and treasurer for many years. He graduated from St. John's High School in Darlington and the University of South Carolina. During World War II he served in the Army Air Force. He was employed by Sonoco Products Company for 40 years and retired in 1984 as Controller. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member and former president of the Damon Gun Club.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle White Norment of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jim Money of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Lou and Vicki Will Norment of Hartsville; grandchildren, Jennifer Money, Paul Money, Daniel Money, Caroline Norment and Louis Norment; sisters, Bet Phillips of Darlington and Dale Mullinix of High Point, N.C.

Follis Dean Collum

CHEROKEE, Ala. -- Mr. Follis Dean Collum, 80, of Cherokee, AL died Monday, November 26, 2001.

Funeral services were held at 2 PM on Thursday, November 29, 2001 in the Morrison funeral Home Chapel in Cherokee, AL, with Bruce Palmer officiating. Burial followed in the Harris Chapel cemetery.

Mr. Collum was a Colbert County native. He was a member of the Mhoontown Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge No. 919 A.F.M. Mr. Collum served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Collum, of the home; four sons, Michael Collum of Darlington, Terry Collum of Ardmore, AL, Ronald Collum and Jackie Collum, both of Cherokee AL; one brother, Ezell Collum of Newsome Springs, AL; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Epworth United Methodist church, 706 Pearl St., Darlington, SC, 29532.

Mable Wilson Fulton

LAKE CITY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mable "Toy" Wilson Fulton will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 from Mt. Clair Baptist Church on Peachtree Street, Lake City with the Rev. W.L. Thompson officiating and burial in Poston cemetery at Cades, directed by Green's Funeral Home. A wake service will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Mrs. Fulton, 92, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1. She was born in Cades, a daughter of the late Arrington and Essie Wilson. She was married to the late Isaac Fulton.

She attended St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Cades, Cooper Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Miami, and later joined Mt. Clair Baptist Church, Lake City. She was employed by Florence County School District 3 custodial service.

Surviving are four sons, Benjamin (Mary) Fulton of Lake City, Roosevelt Fulton and Isaac (Minnie) Fulton of Newark, N.J., Larry (Geraldine) Fulton of Lake Worth, Fla.; seven daughters, Essie Frierson (Elwood Armstrong) of Vineland, N.J., Luttie Graham of Scranton, Delores (Clyde) Cooper and Jessie (Jimmy) Harrison, both of Olanta, Carrie (Robert) Gamble of Hillside, N.J., Mable (Mike) Davis of Miami and Mary Postell of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three brothers, Willie (Christine) Wilson of Lake City, Rogers (Lula) Wilson of Philadelphia and Alton (Lizzie) Fulton of Kingstree; six sisters, Ethel Adams of Danville, Va., Ruby Wilson of Philadelphia, Dorothrene Wallace of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Lucille (Archie) Epps of Kingstree, Lillie (James) Montgomery of Pompano, Fla., and Clover Paige of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 156 grandchildren; 120 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Sara Ellis Hunt Gainey

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Sara Ellis Hunt Gainey, 79, who died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 from Lakeview Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles Boswell, the Rev. Don Purvis and the Rev. Rocky Purvis will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gainey was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late Julian and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Ellis. She was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach.

Surviving are daughters, Rebecca Clark and Penelope Ingram of Hartsville; son, Wilson E. Hunt of Hartsville; stepson, Alvin S. Gainey of Hartsville; stepdaughter, Deborah Kirby of Rock Hill; sisters, Betty Jean Ellis of Hursey, Pa., and Frankie Miller of Alexander, Va.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilson B. Hunt, and her second husband, Clarence Bruce Gainey.

Memorials may be made to Timberlake Baptist Church, 9850 Highway 707, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29588.

Walter Raymond Ward

ANDREWS -- Walter Raymond Ward, 81, died Friday morning, Dec. 7, 2001 at a Florence hospital.

Celebration Service of Death unto Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, will follow in Andrews Memorial cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Miles.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mr. Ward was born May 2, 1920 in Williamsburg County, a son of Sampson Ward and Louise Barrineau Ward; a retired 32 -year employee of International Paper Company, Georgetown Mill, where he was a Quarter Century Club member; a member and former past president of the Hutson Bay Hunting Club; and was a member of Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served in the Men's Fellowship Men's Sunday School Class and Chancel choir. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a wonderful grandfather and a dedicated Christian.

He was predeceased by a brother, Levy Bryant Ward, and a sister, Tinker W. Pierce.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Lena Mae Driggers Ward of Andrews, are a son, Phillip R. Ward and his wife, Nanette, of Andrews; a daughter, Mary Sue W. Creel and her husband, George, of Florence; five brothers, Lofton Woodrow Ward of Georgetown, William Lewis Ward of Trio, Edwin Norman Ward and Phillip Julian Ward, both of Charleston, and Franklin Roosevelt Ward of Georgetown; a sister, Virginia Mae Cooper of Aiken; three grandchildren, Candace S. Creel, George M. "Chip" Creel II and Billie Ward Camlin; a great-grandson, Cody Camlin; many nieces and nephews.
