Ruth C. 'Joline' Floyd

LAKE CITY -- Mrs. Ruth C. "Joline" Floyd, 73, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 after an illness. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Elvis Calcutt and Evelyn Carolyn Keefe Calcutt. Mrs. Floyd was a homemaker and member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Matthews.

Surviving are her husband, Lonnie B. Floyd of Lake City; a daughter, Mary Beth Lee of Lake City; two sons, Joel B. Floyd and Michael V. Floyd, both of Lake City; a sister, Jessie Mae Poston of Pamplico; a brother, Victor Calcutt of Lake City; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Lamar Filyaw

FLORENCE -- Lamar Filyaw, 74, of 1612 King Ave., Florence, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. Filyaw was born in Florence County, a son of the late Fate and Irene Carraway Filyaw. He was retired from E.I. DuPont as a Job Steward. He was a member of the Pentecostal faith and was a member of the Painters Local Union No. 1756 of New Ellenton.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Ray Filyaw, who died in 1977.

Surviving are his wife, Lillie Mae Langley Filyaw of Florence; two sons, Bobby L. Filyaw and Gerald W. (Brenda) Filyaw, both of Florence; two sisters, Sarah (Samuel) Hardwick of Conway and Doris Goodman of Florence; three grandchildren, Gerald Brian Filyaw and Jennifer Marie Filyaw, both of Florence, and Bradley Mason Pardee of Columbia; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jade Pardee of Columbia and Alexys Nicole Wearne of Florence.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hicks Chapel cemetery near Coward.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jonathan Edward McNeal

HEMINGWAY -- We regret to announce the passing of Jonathan Edward McNeal. Mr. McNeal, 30, was the son of Johnny and Elizabeth Cowan McNeal. He graduated from Hemingway High School in 1989 and attended Coastal Carolina University. Mr. McNeal is survived by his parents and one brother, Randall M. McNeal of Columbia. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at Hopewell AME Church in Hemingway. The Rev. William McNeal will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bartell's Funeral Home is in charge.

Stephen Franklin Love

HARTSVILLE -- Stephen Franklin Love, 33, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

born in Hartsville, he was a son of Buddy and Tress Hopkins Love.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Hartsville are a son, Douglas Shane Love of Hartsville and a daughter, Hayley Rose Love of Hartsville; a sister, Tammy Love Rogers and husband, Matthew of Hartsville; and a very special niece, Savanna Hope Rogers of Hartsville.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at First Pentecostal Holiness Church on Swift Creek Road in Hartsville with the Rev. Alvin D. Rogers Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home of Hartsville and at other times at the parents' home on Hidden Creek Road in Hartsville.

Memorials may be sent to First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 512 Swift Creek Road, Hartsville, S.C. 29550.

Peggy M. Galloway

FLORENCE -- Peggy Marze Galloway, 72, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 in a local hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 in College Park Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born in Lydia, a daughter of the late John Henry and Dorothy Ethel Woodward Marze. She was a graduate of Florence High School and was a personnel secretary with Carolina Power and Light in Florence. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church.

Mrs. Galloway was the widow of Harvey P. Galloway Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Ann Galloway of Florence; a son, Chip Galloway of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Sylvia (Ralph) Miller; and two grandsons, James M. and Bryan P. Galloway.

Autrey Isria Cooper

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Mr. Autrey Isria Cooper, 85, passed away at his home on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27, 2001.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel in Dillon with burial in Greenlawn cemetery in Dillon.

Helen Dean Heniford Strickland

LORIS -- Mrs. Helen D. Strickland, 72, of Loris died Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 27, 2001 at Loris Community Hospital following an illness. born June 19, 1929 in Loris, Mrs. Strickland was the daughter of the late Mr. Donnie McCoy Coats and the late Alphie Lee Bell Coats. Mrs. Strickland was the widow of Mr. Bissell Heniford and Mr. Cecil Strickland. Mrs. Strickland was retired from the Horry County Department of Education Food Services Division, a long time member of Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church and did volunteer work for Loris Extended Care Facility and many community functions.

Survivors include a son, Mack Heniford and wife Gloria of Tabor City, N.C.; two daughters, Jean Coleman and husband Jerry of Mullins and Patsy Heniford of Florence; a brother, Sammy Coats and wife Cela of Loris; two sisters, Christine Soles and husband Elwood of Jacksonville, Fla., and Peggy Graham and husband James of Tabor City, N.C.; three grandchildren, Pamela Dutton and husband Lynn of Nichols, Michelle Barnhill and husband Eddie of Mullins and Stewart Heniford of Tabor City, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Ariel Dutton of Nichols and Cameron Barnhill of Mullins. Mrs. Strickland was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Heniford, and a brother, Lacy Coats.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church with burial following in Pleasant Meadow cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Rocky Gregory. Those who wish may make memorials to Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church, 937 Green Sea Road South, Loris, S.C. 29569. Directed by Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris.

Harry Legrande Coker

LAKE CITY -- Harry Legrande Coker, 68, of Rodney Road, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 at Conway Hospital.

He was born June 19, 1933 in Florence County, a son of the late William and Nettie Kirby Coker.

He moved to Conway in June from Lake City, where he owned Harry's Welding Shop and was a farmer.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Freeman and her husband, Jay, of Conway; five brothers, Hubert and Russell Coker, both of Lake City, Jerry and Ricky Coker, both of Charleston, and Ernie Coker of Kentucky; three sisters, Janice Wilkes and Virginia Godwin, both of Lake City, and Dianne McKenzie of Kingstree; four grandsons, Trey and Josh Coker, Ron Prosser and Joey Hutchinson; a great-grandson, Shane Hutchinson; and his former wife, Audrey Hanna Coker. He was predeceased by a son, Legrande Coker.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Palmetto Funeral Home in Conway with the Rev. Jerry Phillips officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Smith cemetery near Kingstree.

Lena Harrell Gibson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Lena Harrell Gibson, 90, of Nashville, Tenn., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 after an illness.

Mrs. Gibson was born Sept. 26, 1910 in Florence County, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Dillie Kennedy Harrell.

Surviving are one son, Dr. Robert E. Picirilli and his wife Clara of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Jean (Clarence) Lewis, Jane Hutchinson and Joy Nelson, all of Nashville, Tenn., June (Sam) McVay of Madrid, Spain, and Jill (Allen) Pointer of Russellville, Ark.; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Alma H. Weatherford, and two brothers, Oscar and Carey Harrell.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 in Mt. Elon Freewill Baptist Church near Pamplico directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a niece, Catherine Isgett, 1133 Pineapple Gate Drive, Florence.

Morris Morant

DARLINGTON -- Morris Morant died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 13 in the chapel of Boatwright's Chapel on Main with burial in Florence National cemetery.

Mr. Morant was born May 1, 1927 in St. Stephens, a son of the late Tom and Mattie McGowan Morant. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. Before his retirement, he was employed by the Department of Sanitation, New York, N.Y. He was the father of five children; a son, Morris Morant Jr., preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Florence Morant of Darlington; a son, Bernard of New York; three daughters, Belviaria (Harry) Pointer of North Carolina, Patricia and Mildred, both of Darlington. Also, his mother-in-law, Rosalie Purvis of the home; a brother, Willie (Hattie) Morant; a special grandson, Harry Pointer Jr.; a brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family is receiving friends at the residence 127 Gandy St., Darlington.

Napoleon Anderson Sr.

KINGSTREE -- Napoleon Anderson Sr., 88, died Thursday Dec. 6, 2001 at McNair Nursing Facility after an illness. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday Dec. 13 at Greater St. Mark AME Church, Hemingway. Interment will follow in Barr cemetery directed by Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home Inc.

Surviving are a son, Napoleon Anderson Jr. of Boston; a brother, John D. Anderson of Detroit; a sister-in-law, Rochelle Anderson of Nesmith; a daughter-in-law, Ethel Anderson of Bronx, N.Y.; six grandchildren; a special granddaughter, Norma (Henry) Cyrus of Kingstree; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Carpenter Pate Jones

GEORGETOWN -- Dorothy Carpenter Pate Jones, 90, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Prince George Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Jones was born in Pageland on April 21, 1911, a daughter of the late Robert Allen Carpenter and Willie Mae Blakeney Carpenter. She grew up in Pageland and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing. Mrs. Jones worked as a private duty nurse for a number of years and was also bookkeeper at the A. & P. Store on Front Street in Georgetown for a time. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mrs. Jones was the widow of John Anderson Jones and Lewis Calvin Pate.

Surviving are four sons, Lewis Calvin Pate of Conway, Allen C. Pate and David B. Pate, both of Florence, and Robert J. Pate of Georgetown; a sister, Johnsie Martinov of Conway; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill and the Rev. Hiram L. McElrath. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Billie Jean Jenkins James

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Billie Jean Jenkins James will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Cumberland United Methodist Church, Florence, SC. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 12:00 at the church. She died on December 5, 2001.

born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late George and Alice Gandy Jenkins. One sister Joyce White, preceded her in death.

Mrs. James was a graduate of Wilson High School, class of 1949. She also attended South Carolina State College and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

At an early age, she was converted at the Gate City Mission under the auspices of Cumberland United Methodist Church.

Survivors are: a devoted stepdaughter, Mona Sawyer; a loving stepson, Joe Reed; a step granddaughter, Sonya Sawyer; nephews, Carlton White, Kevin Gandy; a niece, Maryann Merriam; cousins, Ben Williams, James (Pearl) Spears, Pauline Spears, Herman (Eileen) Young, Leon Jenkins and Clifford Jenkins, Mildred Wilson; special friends, Ila (Henry) Thomas and Gwendolyn (Andrew) Robertson.

Mary Finklea Holliday

FLORENCE -- Mary Finklea Holliday, 75, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 in a local hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14 in Pamplico First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Woodside cemetery in Pamplico, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Alva Eugene and Vendetta Gregg Finklea. She attended Furman University and the McLeod School of Nursing, and was a homemaker. Mrs. Holliday was the widow of Walter Cobb Holliday.

She was a member of Pamplico First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Walter C. Holliday Jr., and his wife, Sheila, of Pamplico; a granddaughter, Stephanie Marie Holliday; a grandson, Walter C. Holliday III; and a great-grandson, Robert Drew Grindle.

Memorials may be made to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1232 22nd St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037-1292.
