FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mr. Scottie B. Burgess will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001 in Monumental Baptist Church with burial in Backus-Bacote cemetery directed by Backus Funeral Home.
He was the son of the late Helen Burgess and the late Willie Gee of Florence, where he also attended District 1 schools.
Mr. Burgess, 48, died Wednesday, Nov. 28 after an extended illness.
Surviving are a sister, Ernestine Gee; a brother, Wilbur Burgess; an aunt, Mildred Burgess; three nieces and two nephews, all of Florence.
The family will receive members/friends at 304 McFarland St., Florence.
Viewing will be from 2 to 10 p.m. today.
Minnie Lee Patterson
LAMAR -- Minnie Lee Patterson of 305 Newberry Road, Lamar died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001 from injuries sustained after an automobile accident. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at Spaulding Jr. High School Gymnasium, with Harold Sawyer officiating. Burial will take place in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to the efficiency of Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
Mrs. Patterson was born in the Bishopville area of Lee County, a daughter of Dotten and Rosa Ann Jefferson Sweetenburg. She was educated in Lee County public schools and graduated from Dennis High School with the class of 1967. She was married
to Henry Patterson and this union was blessed with five children. Minnie was employed by Reeves Brothers for 12 years and was last employed by the Darlington County School System. She was first a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and later she attended St. John United Methodist Church. She was currently a student of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors in addition to her husband, Henry Patterson of the home, include her mother and father, Rose Ann Sweetenburg of Bethune; two daughters, Pamala Goodman of Hartsville and Taneka "Michael White" Patterson of Lamar; three sons, Norris Patterson of Lamar, Christopher (Brenda) Patterson of Florence and Stanley Patterson of Indianapolis; four sisters, Sarah Gordon of Alexandria, Va., Ethel (Bill) Porter of Falls Church, Va., Catherine (Edmond) James of Cassatt and Tinnie Flemming of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Darvin Sweetenburg and Richard (Essie) Sweetenburg, both of Bethune, and Charles (Frances) Sweetenburg of Bishopville; and seven grandchildren.
Gonzalee Hanna
TIMMONSVILLE -- Gonzalee Hanna, 68, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at his residence.
He was born in Florence County a son of the late Clinton and Nekoda Altman Hanna. He attended Clemson University and had served in the U.S. Army. He was retired as a pressroom foreman having worked for the Florence Morning News and the Charlotte Observer. He was a self-employed building contractor. He was a member of Lake Swamp Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class.
Surviving are his wife, Deborah Hanna of Florence; a son, Morris (April) Hanna of Florence; a daughter, Deborah Hanna of Florence; a stepson, Roger Freeman of Timmonsville; three stepdaughters, Cheryl (Henry "Bo") Amerson of Timmonsville, Karen (Ray) Stalvey of McClellanville and Kimberly (Greg) Hyman of Timmonsville; two sisters, Bonnie (Thurston) Batchelor of Friendfield and Lenora Eaddy of Florence; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Stewart, Kimble and Derrell Hanna.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lake Swamp Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ronald C. Curtis Sr.
DARLINGTON -- Funeral services for Mr. Ronald C. Curtis Sr. will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001 in Round O Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael McMillian, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington.
Mr. Curtis, 39, died Tuesday, Dec. 11. He was born in Florence, a son of Dora McRavin Curtis and Samuel C. Curtis.
He received his formal education in Darlington County public schools. He attended Claflin College in Orangeburg and later received his B.A. degree through online studies. Additionally, he received a diploma in funeral services from Gupton-Jones Mortuary School. He was converted, baptized and joined Round O Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and later rededicated his life to Christ.
Survivors includes his wife, Bridgitte H. Curtis of Atlanta; two daughters, Keisha Curtis of Atlanta and Stacie Bacote of Darlington; a son, Ronald "Rocc" C. Curtis, Jr. of Atlanta; a special child, Chad Bacote of Darlington; loving mother, Dora McRavin Wade, and father, Samuel C. Curtis, both of Darlington; parents who played a very integral part of his life, Linda Curtis and James Wade; six sisters, Anastacia (Shornard) Wingate, Althea (Rodney) Brunson, Tyeesha Curtis and Jackie Douglas, all of Darlington, and Tifani (Jeremiah) Merritt of Charlotte; three brothers, Larry Owens of Houston, Mike Owens of Darlington and Carnell Foskey of Utica, N.Y.; special friend and brother, Marion Pinckney; two special nieces and nephew, Kristin McMillian, Cortland Wingate and Rodney A.C. Wingate, all of Darlington; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the home of his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Curtis of 1309 Curtis Drive, Darlington.
Corine M. Anderson
FLORENCE -- Corine Matthews Anderson, 68, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at her residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories.
She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Mary Matthews. She was the widow of W.J. "Pete" Anderson, who died in 1999.
She was a member of Redeemed Holiness Church.
Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by a son, Jerry Lee Anderson, and three sisters, Shirley Jensen, Frances Anderson and Marie Jeffords.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Wiggins of Florence; a son, Bruce Parrott of Florence; three brothers, George Matthews of Bowman, Willie Lee Matthews and Kenny Jeffords, both of Florence; two sisters, Ila Mae Collins of Pamplico and Diane Miles of Sumter; four grandchildren, Gene (April) Owens of Florence, Mandy (James) Caulder, Ashley Anderson and Michael Anderson, all of Pamplico; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Christine Willis, 2816 E. Poor Farm Road, Florence.
Robert G. Vassy
LYNCHBURG -- Robert G. Vassy, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at home. Visitation will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, Timmonsville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in Timmonsville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Lynchburg Presbyterian cemetery.
Mr. Vassy was born March 16, 1921 in the Sardis Community. He was the son of the late J. Charles Vassy and Orilla Langston Vassy. He was a graduate of Sardis High School and attended the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After service in the U.S. Air Force, he returned home and taught agriculture to veterans. He became a South Carolina basketball referee and traveled to many schools throughout the state during the '50s.
He married
and moved to Lynchburg in 1948. He was a farmer, cotton gin manager and co-owner of V. and V. Seed Co. Upon retiring, he worked for the U.S. Post Office in Lynchburg.
He was elected S.C. Republican Committeeman from Lee County and served in that capacity for 30 years. He was appointed by Gov. Jim Edwards to serve on the S.C. Advisory Board and by Gov. Carroll Campbell to serve on the S.C. Development Board. He worked many years in founding and development of Roy Hudgens Academy.
He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church for 25 years before joining Lynchburg Presbyterian Church. Over the years, he served as elder, clerk of the session and treasurer. He served as secretary and treasurer of Lynchburg cemetery for 40 years. At his death, he was an associate member of Timmonsville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Vincent Vassy; daughter, Vicki V. (John) Holler of Columbia; son, Robert G. "Zip" (Patti) Vassy Jr. of Florence; two brothers, C. Allen (Julia) Vassy of Columbia and Rion D. (Jenell) Vassy of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Ryan Holler, John Holler, Anna Vassy and Gil Vassy.

Lewis Allen Moss, Sr.
FLORENCE -- Lewis Allen Moss, Sr., 74, of 1822 Higgins St., Florence, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Moss was born in Augusta, Ga., a son of the late Felix Lamar Moss, Sr. and the late Ruth Pounds Moss Thomas. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and a member of the Bob Johnson Sunday School Class. He also was a member of the "Golden K" Kiwanis Club and was an avid golfer. He was the owner of Al Moss Welding Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Rose Moss, who died in 1995, and by two brothers, Felix Lamar Moss, Jr. and Jerry Ellis Moss, Sr.
Surviving are a daughter, Gail Pridgen of Florence; a brother, Robert T. Moss, Sr. of Florence; and three grandchildren, Lee, Justin and Crissy Pridgen, all of Florence.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee or to the Florence Area Humane Society.
Members of the "Golden K" Kiwanis Club will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Ney Baxter Steele
CHESTERFIELD -- Mr. Ney Baxter Steele, 85, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 at Chesterfield Baptist Church. Interment will be in Chesterfield cemetery.
Mr. Steele was born in Lancaster County a son of the late Baxter Alexander and Eunice Jennings Steele. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina Law School and was a retired attorney. Mr. Steele served as former town judge, county attorney and public defender, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church, where he served as former chairman of deacons, trustee, Sunday school teacher and member of the building committee.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Smith Steele of the home; two sons, Steven Steele of Richmond, Va., and Russell Steele and wife Lisa of Florence; a daughter, Cynthia Steele Nowak and husband Paul of Littleton, Colo.; four grandsons, Andrew Nowak, Joseph Nowak, Samuel Steele and Jackson Steele; and a sister, Dorothy Rowell of Lancaster.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Lila D. Welch
DARLINGTON -- Lila Dean Welch, 73, died Friday morning, Dec. 14, 2001 in her residence after an illness. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Welch, wife of the late Reuben J. Welch, was born in Vance County, N.C., the daughter of the late John Dow and Ethel Newton Dean. She was a secretary, a homemaker and a member of Darlington Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two sons, J. David (Florence) Welch of Bennettsville and Andy Vance (Jan) Welch of Columbia; a daughter, Gloria Welch Lussier of Florence; five grandchildren; and a sister, Onita Baxley of Lancaster.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Adolphus Ravenel 'Jab' Coker
TURBEVILLE -- Mr. Adolphus Ravenel Coker, 71, died Dec. 22, 2001 at his home after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in Turbeville First Baptist Church cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Danny R. Coker and Ethel Driggers Coker. He was a farmer, Tour Bus Driver, and was formerly employed by Lake City Ford. He was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a former Sunday School Teacher.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Burnette Coker and Joan Lee Coker; and a brother, Cleo Coker.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Frances Graham Coker of Turbeville; a daughter, Annelle Coker Osborne of Florence; two sons, Talbert Kent Coker of Florence and Adolphus "Al" Coker Jr. of Turbeville; two sisters, Virginia Moore of Lake City and Betty Lou Atkinson of New Zion; three brothers, D.D. "Lucky" Coker of Lake City, W.L. "Mutt" Coker of Alcolu, and H.D. "Pompy" Coker of Turbeville; nine grandchildren.
Samuel 'Moose' Hanna
SCRANTON -- Funeral services for Mr. Samuel "Moose" Hanna will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday from New Zion Baptist Church in the Camerontown Community of Lake City with the Rev. J. J. Wilson officiating and burial in the Sandhill Memorial Park, directed by Green's Funeral Home of Lake City.
Mr. Hanna, 71, died on Friday, Dec. 14. He was born in Florence County, a son of the late David Hanna and Nettie Graham Hanna.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Gaskins Hanna of the home; three daughters, Susan Robinson and Gloria (Alvin) Jackson both of Scranton, Margaret V. Hanna of Lake City; four sons, Abraham (Jewell) Hanna of Frisco, Texas, David (Lillie Bell) Hanna of Johnsonville, Samuel Hanna Jr. of Scranton and Charles (Patricia) Hanna of Lake City; two brothers, Lavern Hanna of Lake City and Leon (Almae) Hanna of Scranton; two sisters, Alice Rogers and Novelean Brockington of Philadelphia, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grands; three sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Louise G. Murphy
HARTSVILLE -- Funeral service for Louise G. Murphy will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. J.D. Blue officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Murphy, 75, died Friday, Dec. 14 in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.
She was born Feb. 10, 1926 in Darlington County a daughter of the late Bubble and Mary Gilliard King. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, John Murphy of Hartsville; a son, Jonnie Lee Murphy of Baltimore; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Murphy of Baltimore; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and other close relatives and friends.
Jack Patterson
HEMINGWAY -- Jack Patterson, 79, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001 at his home after an illness.
Mr. Patterson was born in Kings Mountain, N.C., a son of the late John Wray Patterson and the late Annie Harmon Patterson. He was the owner and founder of Patterson and Son Construction Co., a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Dawson High School.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche Elliott Patterson of the home; two sons, Ricky (Melissa) Patterson of Hemingway and Jerald Patterson of Lexington; daughter, Jackie (Rory) Owens of Hemingway; sister, Maude P. Beatty of Dawson, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Kaitlin, Sky, John Dawson and Brock Patterson, all of Hemingway.
Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today in the Garden of Devotion cemetery, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway.
