Marie Edge Morris

DILLON -- Marie Edge Morris, 62, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at her residence after an illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22 in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Greenlawn cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21 in the funeral home.

born in Dillon County, Nov. 1, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Willie Paul Johnson and Ida Mae Johnson. She was a member of Dothan Baptist Church, and was a Nurses Aid.

Survivors include her sons, Glenn Edge of Lake View and Robbie Lee Morris of Claremore, Okla.; sisters, Margaret Grimsley of Dillon and Ruby Mishue of Florence; brothers, Ryan Johnson of Dillon, Bryan Johnson and Bill Johnson, both of Flint, Mich.; and grandchildren, Blake Morris of Dillon and Coleman Morris of Claremore, Okla.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29501 or to Dillon County Council on Aging, P.O. Box 1473, Dillon, S.C. 29536.

Nina L. Horne

MULLINS -- Mrs. Nina Bell Lewis Horne, 90, widow of Ishmael Horne, died Sunday, Dec. 16 at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an illness.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p m. Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Red Hill Memorial Gardens cemetery. The services will be directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Horne was born July 2, 1911 in Marion County, a daughter of the late George M. and Carrie Bell Prevatte Lewis. Mrs. Horne was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving Mrs. Horne are a daughter, Mrs. Ralph J. (Jean) Ricketts of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, George W. Horne of Mullins and Lawrence Dan Horne of Mullins; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Lewis Brewer of Florence.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Horne at 6240 Cartwheel Road, Mullins.

Sara Berry Weatherly

MINTURN -- Services for Sara Berry Weatherly will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Alford cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Mrs. Weatherly, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 20 at her residence.

born in Dillon County, June 6, 1913 she was the daughter of the late Victor Berry Sr. and Edna Hayes Berry. She was a member of Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church where she was treasurer of the Women of the Church for 45 years, member of the Dillon Garden Club, a homemaker and a retired farmer. She was the widow of Thad Weatherly.

Survivors include her daughter, Frances Weatherly Hayes of Dillon; grandchildren, Chris (Kristi) Hayes of Mullins, Jason Hayes of Mt. Pleasant, Darryl (Kathy) Fore of Florence, Dixie Weatherly of Minturn and Deann Weatherly of Florence; daughter-in-law, Lutie Weatherly of Minturn; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Hayes and Dylan Hayes, both of Mullins, and Nolan Fore of Florence.

Mrs. Weatherly was preceded in death by her son, Legrand Weatherly; brothers, Henry, Carlysle, Walter and Victor Jr.

The family would like to give special thanks to Jackie Harley, Beatrice Rogers and Bessie Reaves for the kind and compassionate care given to "Miss Sara."

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Van Jeffords

FLORENCE -- Ellen Evangeline "Van" Jeffords, 71, of 6930 E. National cemetery Road, Florence, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 21, 2001, at her residence after an illness.

Mrs. Jeffords was born in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late Curtis and Estelle Ferrell Driggers. She was a member of the Church of God Prophecy and had retired after several years service as a cook for the Country Kitchen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie M. Jeffords, who died in 1979 and by three brothers.

Surviving are three sons, Melvin M. (Gloria) Jeffords and Randy L. Jeffords both of Florence, and Dennis O. (Vicki) Jeffords of Gaston; two daughters, Jeraldine Oliver of Florence and Josephine J. (Joseph) Watson of Brittons Neck; five sisters, Jinnie Hudson, Betty Joe Brisson, Gretchen Blackwell and Edna Creel all of Florence and Renay Ivey of Heath Springs; a brother, Curtis Driggers Jr. of Tocoma, Wa. and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Nathaniel Campbell

DARLINGTON -- Mr. Nathaniel Campbell of 801 Chestnut St., Darlington passed on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001 after a brief illness.

Funeral services are provided by Arthur's Funeral Home, Darlington, with burial in Palmetto Baptist Church cemetery.

Homegoing services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Chapel of Arthur's Funeral Home, Timmonsville Highway, Darlington.

"Nate, " as he was often called, leaves to cherish with many wonderful memories his siblings, Willie and Beatrice Campbell of Newark, N.J., Margaret (Henry) Lyde, Celia Goodson, Bernard (Geraldine) Campbell Josephine (Curtis) Arthur and Joseph (Alice) Campbell, all of Darlington.

He also leaves with many wonderful memories his family consisting of numerous nieces and nephews; a special nephew, David Black Jr.; his uncle, Samuel Boston; aunt, Dora Black; stepfather, Joe Wilson; grandfather, Richard Washington; and adoptive sisters, Ernestine James and Gwendolyn Johnson.

Mr. Campbell was predeceased by siblings Brenda, Johnny and James Campbell.

Richard James Poole

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Entered into eternal rest Tuesday, December 18, 2001, Richard James Poole, 57, of Pawleys Island. The funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2001 in All Saints Episcopal Church, Pawleys Island. Interment will follow All Saints Episcopal Church cemetery. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

Mr. Poole was born in Greenville on September 28, 1944. He was the husband of Linda Bright Poole whom he married in 1966, the son of Mable Waldrop Poole and the late Richard James Poole, Sr.

He attended Camden Military Academy and graduated with B.S. and MBA degrees from East Tennessee State University. Upon completing his degrees he served in the Medical Service Corps as Chief of the Medical Logistics Division of the Medical Command in Europe. He was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany.

After his tour of duty with the United States Army he became administrator of Sereven County Hospital in Sylvania, Georgia. He was president of the East Central District and member of the Georgia Hospital Association. In his capacity, he established the ambulance service for the counties that were included in the East Central district.

In 1978, he became president of Southeastern Health care where he managed Jasper County Hospital, developed and became part owner of Ridgecrest Convalescent Center both of which are in Ridgeland.

In September 1981, he became president and owner of Sandpiper Convalescent Center, Inc., which is located in Mt. Pleasant. In 1984 he built and operated Sandpiper Village, a retirement complex for independent adults. Most recently he opened Sandpiper Courtyard which is an assisted living facility. All three facilities are located in Mt. Pleasant.

He was a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators and past district president of the South Carolina Health Care Association.

He loved all aspects of outdoor life and was an avid quail hunter, boater and fisherman. Over the last 10 years he developed Lakewood Plantation as a wild game preserve with a special emphasis on developing habitat for the promotion of healthy wildlife.

In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by three children, Richard Bruce Poole and his wife Ramona; Timothy James Poole and his wife Jodie; Tamatha Denise Poole and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be Made to Anglican Mission in America (AMIA) of All Saints Episcopal Church, 3560 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.

Jacquelyn Ruth Barnes Fratus

DARLINGTON -- Mrs. Jacquelyn Ruth Barnes Fratus, 69, of Darlington died Friday, December 28, 2001 in a local nursing home.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 30, 2001 from 2-4 PM at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Connecticut.

Mrs. Fratus was born in New London, CT and was the daughter of the late Asa and Anna Rasmussin Barnes. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New London, CT.

Mrs. Fratus was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond G. Fratus and her second husband, George R. Fratus.

Survivors include four sons, Raymond (Ramona) Fratus of Darlington, Michael (Sharon) Fratus of Fort Mill, Kit (Kathleen) Fratus of Jewitt City, CT and Perry (Elaine) Fratus of Pawcatuck, CT; two brothers, Clarence Barnes and Chris Barnes both of CT: two sisters, Bobbie Venditto and Nellie Courmier both of CT; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Medford Place, Activities Fund, 105 Medford Drive, Darlington, SC, 29532.

Clarine Chervinski

DARLINGTON -- Clarine Chervinski, 96, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 in a Hamlet, N.C., nursing center. She was born in Ahoskie, N.C., a daughter of the late Joseph Edwin and Mae Morris Wynne. After college she taught school for a short time and then received nurses training. For many years she was night supervisor at Doctors Hospital, Morristown, Tenn.

She was first married to the late Dossey D. Pearson and her second marriage was to the late Stanley Chervinski. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Sackett of Darlington; a sister, Fannie Morris Jenkins of Pinehurst, N.C.; three grandchildren, Maureen McAlfoose, Burton Bumgarner and Michael Miles; and seven great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 in Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

Lutie McCutchen Barr

HEMINGWAY -- Lutie McCutchen Barr, 96, better known as "Missy, " daughter of the late March and Mary McCutchen, wife of Wallace Barr, mother of Earlene Nesmith and grandmother of Darryl Pressley, all who preceded her in death, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 at Carolina Hospital Systems in Florence.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31 at Mt. Seal United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.P. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Bartell's Funeral Home.

Survivors are a son, Rev. W.J. (Barbara) Barr; a grandson she reared, Kenneth (Janice) Barr; three daughters, E.Jo. Robinson, Mary B. Pressley and Jannie Harris; two foster sons, Richard and Nathaniel Chandler; a brother, Robert (Willie M.) McCutchen; a brother-in-law; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.

Eastern Star rites will be at 7 p.m. today in the Chapel of Bartell's Funeral Home.

Rebecca Goodson

LAMAR -- Funeral services for Mrs. Rebecca "Buster" Goodson will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, at the Barbara J. Hines Memorial Chapel of the Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. Elder Roscoe Black will officiate. Burial will be in the Plaza Memorial Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

Mrs. Rebecca Goodson was born in rural Sumter County, a daughter of the late Elliot and Hattie Capers Herriot and was educated in the public schools. She was married to the late Willie Goodson of Lydia on April 11, 1943 and together they continued to support their family through the art of farming. She was the natural mother of one child, Annie Maple who died in 1995. She also mothered four other children as her own, two of which survive her.

Rebecca's entire life was lived as a true believer with strong faith and Christian attitude in everything that she did. She loved to worship her Lord and Savior in her home, her community and her beloved church, Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Chris of Bishopville.

She loved people and had a reciprocal love between herself and her grandchildren. She personally raised four of her grandchildren and two of her great grandchildren.

Survivors are a son, Claudis (Harriet) Goodson of Petersburg, Va.; a daughter, Annie Lee McDaniel of Bishopville; grandchildren she raised as her own, Billy (Deirdre) Goodson, Robert (Dianne) Goodson, Tyrone (Sharon) Hicks, Charlie Goodson and Molly Rodgers; a loving daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Goodson; 30 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Alma James Humphries

JOHNSONVILLE -- Alma James Humphries, 82, widow of Wayne A. "Chic" Humphries, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 in a Lake City hospital.

Mrs. Humphries was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Lily Goodson James. She was a homemaker, a member of the Little Star Free Will Baptist Church and was a graduate of Darlington County schools.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Wayne Humphries and Gary Humphries, both of Johnsonville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 in Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway with burial in Garden of Devotion cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hannah Residential Manor, 3750 Sheminally Road, Pamplico, S.C. 29583.
