Dorothy G. Rouse

FORK -- Mrs. Dorothy Garris Rouse, 74, widow of David H. Rouse, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw after an illness.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Best and th**e Rev. Eddie Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Watson cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rouse was born Sept. 17, 1927 in Lakeland, Fla., a daughter of the late John Ralph Garris and the late Julia Fogle Garris. Mrs. Rouse was a homemaker and a loving mother. She was a graduate of Lake View High School. Mrs. Rouse was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Rouse are four sons, Larry Rouse of Union, Billy Rouse of Chester, Neil Rouse of Fork and Tommy Rouse of Chester; two daughters, Helen Quick of Cheraw and Kathy Rouse of Conway; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Garris of Lake View; and a sister, Thelma Oliver of Fairmont, N.C.

Mrs. Rouse was predeceased by six brothers, Roy Garris, J.P. Garris, Carl Garris, Raymond Garris, Lester Garris and Manford Garris; and a sister, Lottie Page.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Henry Rogers, 111 Jones St., Mullins, S.C. 29574 or to Watson cemetery, P.O. Box 246, Marion, S.C. 29571.

Frances Bane Brown

FLORENCE -- Frances Bane Brown, 66, of Florence, died Thursday, January 3, 2002 at her residence. born January 22, 1935, in Lumberton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Evander David Bane and Phema P. Bane.

Although born in Lumberton, NC, Mrs. Brown was raised in Mullins, SC and was of the Baptist Faith. She worked in Home Health Care and was a McLeod Volunteer.

Mrs. Brown is survived by two sons, Barry Brown and his wife Mary Jo, of Florence SC, and Terry S. Brown and his wife Genie of Colorada Springs, CO; 3 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Gloria Brown of Lake City, SC. She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Michael (Mickey) Brown and one brother, David Bane.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 6, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Cain-Poston Funeral Home with Funeral Services to follow at 3:00.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee.

Anita Delores Richardson

FLORENCE -- Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services for Ms Anita Delores Richardson, Saturday, January 5, 2002, 1:30 p.m. at New Ebenezer Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.

Nita, as she was affectionately called, was born in Washington, DC, a daughter of Aldophus and Dorothy Richardson. She graduated from Northwestern High School in Adelphi Maryland and Chris Logan School of Cosmetology.

Survivors are her mother, Dorothy S. Richardson; brother, Adolphus (Rick) Richardson, III; grandfather, Wilbert Scriven; aunts, Lucille Richardson and Josephine Vanderhall; special cousin, Mary Lou Darby; god-parents, Eddie and Linda Thomas; spiritual brother and sister, Minister and Mrs. Alexis (LaDonna) Pipkins.

Alma Parks

FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Alma Parks will be at 3 p.m. today in the C.H. Timmons Memorial Chapel of Peoples Funeral Service of Florence. Burial will be in Sansbury cemetery.

Mrs. Parks is survived by a son, Robert Parks, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Vera Louise Rogers Brock

BLENHEIM -- Services for Mrs. Vera Louise Rogers Brock, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home with burial in Drake-Dudley cemetery. Memorials may be made to Blenheim United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 296, Blenheim, SC 29516.

Mrs. Brock, widow of Robert Brock, died Wednesday, Jan. 2. born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late Rembert Luther, Sr., and Annie Maude Crowley Rogers. A retired merchant, she was the owner of Brock's Grocery. She was a member of Blenheim United Methodist Church, where she held various church offices.

Surviving are sons, Bobby Brock (Shirley) and Freddy Brock (Kathy) of Blenheim; daughters Cathy Hunter (Kelly) of Florence and Annette B. Webster of Bennettsville; a brother, Prentiss Rogers of Bennettsville; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Prevatte of McColl; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, J.W. Rogers and Rembert Rogers, Jr.

Virginia Lorayne Bass

WINTHROP, Mass. -- Virginia Lorayne Bass, 56, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 in Manning.

born Aug. 9, 1945, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late David Harris Bass and the late Mary Kathleen Haseldon Bass. She was a retired nurse, manager of Ocean Spray Inn in Winthrop, Mass., and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Florence.

Surviving are dear friends, Dr. Ray and Mrs. Phyllis Langston of Manning, Jennifer Wright and husband, Jerry, of Lancaster, Jay Langston of Clemson and Allen Langston of Annapolis, Md., Sara Jane Wessinger of Winthrop, Mass., Don and Elena Bartlett of Winthrop, Mass., and Dr. and Mrs. A.R. Smythe of Columbia.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 in Manning First Baptist Church. The Rev. Danny R. Bridges will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Hope cemetery in Florence.

Friends will be received at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Ray Langston, 1053 Country Club Circle, Manning.

Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

Esther Harrell Small

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Esther Harrell Small will be 11 a.m. Saturday at J.O. Smith Memorial Chapel. Burial, directed by Smith's Funeral Home Inc., will in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Small, 97, died Wednesday at the Heritage Home.

She was the daughter of the late Rev. John A. and Mamie C. Harrell.

She was educated in Florence County public schools. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from South Carolina State University. She taught in Berkeley County. After moving to Florence, she continued her teaching career at Holmes Elementary School, retiring after 41 years.

Small was a member of Cumberland United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and served as musician at the Gate City Mission (now Cumberland Outreach Center) for many years. She was a dedicated member of the Women Society Christian Service (now United Methodist Women) .

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie C. Harrell, and a brother, Nathaniel Harrell.

Survivors include a brother, John A. Harrell of the home; two special cousins, Barbara Harrell-Smith of Wilmington, Del., and Elder Randolph Harrell of Timmonsville; a devoted friend, Cecelia G. Richardson; and other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cumberland United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Everett Johnson

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Everett Johnson, 73, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Revs. Tim Tomlinson and Leon Johnson will officiate with burial in Mt. Elon Baptist Church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the residence, 404 Wilson Drive. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Mr. Johnson died Wednesday, Jan. 2. born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John Marion and Annie Mayes Smith Johnson. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and for 40 years was owner and manager of Everett Johnson Realty and Construction Co. He was a member of the Lions Club and was a member and newsletter editor for the Central High School Alumni Association

Surviving are his wife, Christine King Johnson of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard Schroer of Florence; sons and daughter-in-law, Eric Johnson and Dale and Mary Ellen Johnson, all of Hartsville; brother, Leon Johnson of Greenville; and grandchildren, Erica Bedenbaugh, Matthew Bedenbaugh, Seth Johnson, Greyson Johnson, Heather Schroer and Joshua Schroer.

Helen Ruth Godbolt

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Ms. Helen Ruth Godbolt will be conducted 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2002 at Wayside Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. She died on December 31, 2001 in her resdience after an illness.

She was born in Florence County a daughter of James Scott and Sally Ruth Godbolt Addison. She attended the public schools of Florence County. She was employed at Young's Pecan Company.

Surviving besidesher father are her fiance', Ernest Davis, sisters, Brenda Godbolt and Jeanette Addison; brothers, Marvin "Boo" Godbolt, Michael Godbolt, Sgt. Major Enock "Deany" (Deborah) Godbolt, Pete Scott; stepfather, Eli Addison; special cousin, Estelle (Fred) Nowlin.

Annie Powers Smith

LATTA -- Mrs. Annie Powers Smith died Wednesday January, 2, 2002 at Marion County Medical Center.

Mrs. Smith widow of John Henry Smith was born December 25, 1913 in Sellers a daughter of late Ed Franklin and Mary Jackson Powers. She was a member of Latta Baptist Church.

Survivors are sons Douglas Wendell Soles of Latta, S.C.; Henry D. Smith, Denver, Colorado and Ronald L. Smith, Dillon, S.C.; daughters Frances Daniels, Marion, S.C. and Sandra McCormick, Floyd Dale, S.C.; brothers Ed Powers, Jr. of Williston, S.C. and William Powers of Dillon, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

She was predeceased by son Larry W. Smith.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January, 5, 2002 at 3 p.m. at Latta Baptist Church with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Kannadays Funeral Home of Latta.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday January 4, 2002 at the funeral home.

Nadine S. Floyd

FLORENCE -- Nadine Smith Harris Floyd, 93, of Florence died Tuesday morning, Jan. 1, 2002, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Floyd was born in Gloucester, N.C., a daughter of the late Thurman G. and Mamie Davis Smith. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was a retired medical technologist for Saunders Memorial Hospital in Florence.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William E. Harris, who died in 1962, and by Hewitt Floyd, who died in 1984.

Surviving are two sons, Herrick E. Harris and his wife, Bonnie, of Lexington and Phillip E. Harris and his wife, Linda, of Florence; a brother, Elmer Smith of Gloucester, N.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 in the Gaskill Family cemetery in Straits, N.C., near Morehead City, N.C., directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.

The family will be at the residence of Nicki H. Anderson, 100 Layton Drive, Timmonsville.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.

Marion C. Miles Sr.

FLORENCE -- Marion Caleb Miles Sr., 71, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Scranton United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born in Clarendon County, a son of the late Tilman and Maebell Welch Miles. He was self-employed as a wallpaper hanger.

Mr. Miles was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where he was a member of the B.W. Stokes Sunday School Class and served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lee Miles of the home; two daughters, Patricia (Dearl) Baker of Timmonsville and Elaine (Paul) Purvis of Florence; a son, Marion C. (Jane) Miles, Jr. of Florence; four sisters, Dot Gaskins of Olanta, Thelma Floyd, Elsie Lyman and Nancy Lee, all of Lake City; four brothers, Roger Miles and Legrande Miles, both of Florence, J.W. Miles of Lake City and Alex Miles of Walhalla; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Grace Baptist Church Building Fund, 2400 Third Loop Road, Florence, SC 29501.

John James Jeffers

FLORENCE -- John James "J.J." Jeffers, 76, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope cemetery.

He was born in Florence, a son of the late Joseph Clyde Jeffers, Jr. and Carl Evelyn Turbeville Jeffers. He was graduated from Florence High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Jeffers was retired from ACL Railroad.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Jimmy McNair Sunday School Class. He was a former youth director at the YMCA and was a member of the Retired Railroad Employees Club.

He was predeceased by a son, J.J. "Jay" Jeffers, Jr., and an infant son, Gene Kirkland Jeffers; and two brothers, Charles Jeffers and Clyde Jeffers.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Pullen Jeffers of the home; a son, Richard Kenneth (Pam) Jeffers of Florence; a brother, William F. "Billy" (Wanda) Jeffers of Florence; a sister-in-law, Margaret Jeffers of Mt. Pleasant; three granddaughters, Ashley Jeffers, Laurel Jeffers and Jordan Jeffers; three nieces and a nephew.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 5446, Florence, SC 29502.
