FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Deacon Walter Johnson will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Timmonsville due to construction at Elizabeth Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elizabeth Baptist Church cemetery directed by Peoples Funeral Service of Florence.
Deacon Johnson died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001.
He was born in Florence County a son of the late Amon and Baszella Isaiah Johnson. He attended the public schools of Florence County. He served in the U.S. Army and received several commendations. He was employed at the Elks Club in Florence for more than 35 years. He was a devoted member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where he worked diligently as Deacon, member of the Male Chorus, member of the Laymen Council, Church Historian and past chairman of several committees.
Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Mrs. Annie Johnson; a son, Leonard Irvin (Marion L.) Johnson of Maryland; three grandchildren, Philip Johnson, Valerie Harrison and Irvin Johnson; special nieces and nephew, Alafair Weston, Hattie Mae Evans, Juanita Storr, Mary Wiley, Laura Mae Hines and Marion Robinson; four great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.
James Alexander
FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mr. James Alexander will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Dimery & Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Northview cemetery.
Mr. Alexander died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 in a local hospital after an illness.
He was born in Abbeville, a son of the late Elizabeth Alexander. He attended the schools in Atlanta.
Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Alexander and Linda (Oscar) Gregg, both of Florence; grandchildren, Darveece Alexander, Trevell Gregg, DaShawn Gregg and Latoya Gregg, all of Florence; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Rev. Walter Thomas Alford Sr.
HARTSVILLE -- Funeral service for the Rev. Walter Thomas Alford, Sr. will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 in First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Rev. Alford, 90, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 in Augusta, Ga.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Bell Franklin Alford of Hartsville; five daughters, Jessie A Stuckey (Maxie) of Washington, D.C., Mary H. Yarborough of Aiken, Gradye A. Stephen (Allen) of Patterson, N.J., Beverly Alford of District Heights, Md., and Linda Alford of Florence; three sons, Norman L. Alford (Carolyn) of Freeport, Bahamas, William E. Alford of Darlington and Reginald D. Alford of Hartsville; an adopted son, Joseph Scott of Baltimore; four sisters, Ellen Pickett of Norfolk, Va., Alberta Mack of Timmonsville, Minnie Lee George and Rosa Lee Hines, both of Lamar; a brother, Dock Blyther of Lamar; an aunt, Louise "Sweeter"; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Johnnie Lee Alford of Wilmington, N.C., and Lillian Alford of Marion; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3 in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel.
Kelvin Tremayne McAllister
EFFINGHAM -- Funeral services for Mr. Kelvin Tremayne McAllister will be conducted 12:00 on Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at Savannah Grove Baptist Church. Burial to follow at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church cemetery in Effingham. He died on December 29, 2001 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mr. McAllister was a 1993 graduate of South Florence High School and did further studies at Morris College and Fancis Marion University.
Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Willard Jay R. McAllister and Jarius L. McAllister; grandmother, Rosa L. Singletary; fiancee', Shanetta Denise Timmons; aunts and uncles, Minister Rinda (Eugene) Pringle, Nathan McAllister, Joseph W. (Barbara) McAllister, Ronnie (Julie) McAllister, Ernestine McCormick, Dora (James) Skinner, Legrant Johnson, Otha Lee Johnson, Warren Johnson, Linda (Rentor) Sellers; other relatives and friends.

Viola Blanche Boisvert Sherman
FLORENCE -- Viola Blanche Boisvert Sherman, 54, of Florence, died Saturday, December 29, 2001 in Carolinas Hospital System. born March 10, 1947, in Woonsocket, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Alphonse Boisvert and Aldora Menard Boisvert.
Mrs. Sherman was a retired caregiver at Wrenthem State Hospital. She was of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Kelly Jean Sherman, Stephanie Sherman (Doria) , one son, William Sherman (Jeanine) , and three grandchildren, Lindsey, Jacob, and Kyle Sherman. Also surviving is one sister, Lorraine Guzman (Eddie) .
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church, 2536 W. Hoffmeyer Road, Florence, SC 29505.
A memorial service will held at a later date in Woonsocket, R.I.
Funeral services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.
Mrs. Flora VonNeal Hill Floyd
LUMBERTON, N.C. -- Mrs. Flora VonNeal Hill Floyd, 69, of 4207 Cricklewood St., Lumberton, N.C., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001 at her residence with her husband, children and family by her side.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Godwin Heights Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Lynn Bullock. Burial will be in Floyd Memory Gardens. Visitation was from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory, Inc. in Lumberton, N.C., and other times at the home.
Mrs. Floyd was born April 27, 1932 to Charlie and Edna Hill of Fairmont, N.C. She was co-founder and co-owner of Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc. It was her love and compassion for others that inspired her with a vision to provide a hometown funeral service that could meet the needs of others in their time of greatest bereavement. So it was in 1973 that she and her husband, Henry Floyd, pursued her dream and founded Floyd Mortuary. She was a member of Godwin Heights Baptist Church, where she remained active until her illness. She taught several Sunday School classes, sang in the choir and had a deep love for the youth. She also was associated with Bible Alive Ministries since 1977.
Survivors are her husband, Henry Floyd of the home; sons, Andy Folcy of Fayetteville and Terry Floyd of Lumberton; daughters, Myra Hamilton and Leisa Jordan, both of Lumberton, Rosemarie Wood of San Diego, Patsy Bowen of Oklahoma City, Joan Floyd, Janet Sylvester and Gayle Long, all of Florence; sisters, Olive Byrd of Lumberton and Jaxie Simmons of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and three-great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be sent to Bible Alive Ministries, P.O. Box 2222, Fayetteville, N.C. 28302; or to Hospice of Robeson, 2002 N. Cedar St., Lumberton, N.C. 28358.
Robert L. Ansay
FLORENCE -- Robert L. "Bob" Ansay, 46, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in a local hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born in Kileen, Texas, a son of the late E.R. "Moe" Ansay and Clara Ann Donahue Walters. He was Shop Foreman at Florence Regional Airport.
A loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Mona Brown Ansay of Florence; three daughters and sons-in-law, Chrystal Ansay-Huyck and Jeff Porter-Rodgers of Michigan, Patricia Ansay and Arbie Turner of Florence, and Sandy Turner-Ansay and Billy McKenzie of Florence; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Ansay and Kimberly D. Ansay of Florence; a sister, Amanda Wickline of Conway; stepbrother, Marty Walters of Florence; three grandchildren, Aaron Huyck of Michigan, Amber Turner and Nathaniel Ansay, both of Florence; two nieces, Tanya Moore and Stephanie Moore, both of Conway; and a nephew, William Nicklaus Street of Florence.

Jenell Browder Darity
FLORENCE -- Carrie "Jenell" Browder Darity, 69, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born in Evergreen, a daughter of the late William Benjamin and Mitilda Ozella Barrineau Browder. She was the widow of Leon I. Darity.
Mrs. Darity attended Truth Chapel.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Walter Browder and Earl C. Browder.
Survivors include a sister, Mary B. Barr of Florence; and a special niece, Holly Swindel.
Frank White, Jr.
FLORENCE -- Graveside service or Mr. Frank White, Jr. will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Florence National cemetery, with full military rites, directed by Peoples Funeral Service of Florence.
Mr. White died Saturday, December 29, 2001.
He was born in Fairmont, N.C. a son of the late Bessie E. and Frank White Sr. He attended Wilson High School and was a graduate of Fred Moore School of Tailoring in Ashville, N.C. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army - Air Force during the World War II, spending three years in the European Theater of Operations. He later served as a professional tailor with Sears for 29 years.
His civic involvement included member of the American Legion Post No. 228, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Association and a member of Florence Branch NAACP.
He was married
to Mrs. Corine "Kitty" White who preceded him in death.
Survivors include; two sons, Michael (Anita) White and Frank (Adriene) White III, all of Florence; three grandchildren, Yvonne Robinson, Michael White and Andre White; two great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Andrew James Jr.; a sister-in-law, Helen James; a lifelong friend, Mr. David Moses, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Robert 'Bobby' Long
PAMPLICO -- Funeral services for Mr. Bobby Long will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at Pee Dee Baptist Church, with the Elder Frankie Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Pee Dee Memorial cemetery, directed by Peoples Funeral Home of Pamplico.
Mr. Long, 58, died Sunday, December 23, 2001 in a New York hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Rev. James Hilton and Elema Thomas Long. He was a 1962 graduate of Gibbs High School. Mr. Long was a retired postal worker in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Elizabeth Moore Long of Brooklyn; daughters, Elema (Carl) Breedy and Elizabeth Long of Brooklyn; sons, George (Debbie) , Omar (Helen) , Jeremiah (Darelle) , Jahard (Olivia) , Reginald (Sonia) , Saladeen, Archmond, Rockmond, Malik, Sharieff, Rashid and Parsha, all of Brooklyn; three sisters, Glinnie (Henry) Johnson and Deloris Long, both of Pamplico and Olivia (Randolph) Eaddy of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers, Charles Jerome (Minnie Lee) Long and Arthur Jerome Long, both of Pamplico; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grand child.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Deloris Long, 801 N. Old River Rd., Pamplico.
Myrtle F. Chace
FLORENCE -- Myrtle Foun-tain Chace, 83, died Saturday, December 29, 2001 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2002 in Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Entomb-ment will be in Florence County Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Mrs. Chace was born in Hannah, a daughter of the late Coy Lee and Hatha Powell Fountain. She was a member of Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, and the Loyalty Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, George Henry Chase Sr. of Florence; a daughter, Joyce C. (Gerald) Welch; a son, George H. (Sandra) Chace Jr. of Florence; two sisters, Ilena Rogers of Florence and Mabel James of Sumter; two brothers, Eddie Fountain of Florence and John Fountain of Norwich, Conn.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1400 W. Evans Street, Florence, SC 29501.
Rebecca W. Lucas
FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mrs. Rebecca W. Lucas will be 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001 at Trinity Baptist Church. Burial directed by Smith's Funeral Home, Inc., will be in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Rebecca, the daughter of the late Sidney and Estelle Williams, was born on Oct. 22, 1916 in Sardis. She departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 26 in a local hospital.
She was educated in the Cartersville and Timmonsville school systems. In 1933 Rebecca and the late Olden Lucas Sr. were united in holy matrimony. God blessed this union with six children and 41 years of marriage before his death in November 1974.
At an early age Rebecca -- "Reese, " as she is known to her family and friends -- accepted Jesus as Lord of her life and joined Chaney Grove Baptist Church, Cartersville. In 1948 Rebecca became a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Until her health failed she served willingly in many capacities at Trinity Baptist Church. She attended the Adult Sunday School, was a member of the Jubilee Choir, Missionary Circle No. 2 and the Nurses Aid Unit.
Rebecca was employed for many years as a companion and homemaker to prominent families in the Florence area. She was a member of Noami Chapter No. 93 Order of the Eastern Star and Royal Circle Tent for more than 50 years.
Two of her children, Delores and Otis, and eight siblings, her twin sister, Elizabeth, Isaac, Agnes, Mary, Martha, James, John and Lloyd, preceded Rebecca's homegoing.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary E. (Joseph) Williams of Quinby, Mildred (Adam) Bryant of Timmonsville and Ida M. Roberts of Quinby; a son, Olden Lucas Jr. of Florence; 14 grandchildren, Gregory Williams, Sharon Williams, Valerie (Derek) Howe, Patricia (Craig) Snyder, Darrell (Ari) Taylor, Adam Bryant III, Delano (Saundra) Lucas, Torris Lucas, Shawn Lucas, Lisa Lucas, Michael Lucas, Otis Lucas Jr., Rashad and Tamika Lucas; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Lannie Mae Davis of Lamar and Vernera Cooper of Florence; a brother, Sidney Williams Jr. of Staten Island, N.Y.; five sisters-in-law, Parnie Mae (James) Thomas, Bonnie Kay (Sylvester) James, Eula Young, Leslie Lee of Lamar and Pearl Timmons of Baltimore; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Lucas and Debra Lucas, both of Florence; a devoted goddaughter, Elease Morgan of Baltimore; a special friend, Dora Jacobs of Florence; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.
Eastern Star and Tent Rites will be 7 p.m. today in J.O. Smith Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends other times at 7 Coventry St., Quinby Forest, Quinby and the residence, 701 N. Dargan St., Florence.
