MULLINS -- Mr. Charles Wilkes, 70, husband of June Brown Wilkes, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marvin Lynch and the Rev. Michael Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Cedardale cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilkes was born Oct. 12, 1931 in Shamrock, Fla., a son of the late Charlie Wallace Wilkes and the late Effie Carlie Williams Wilkes. Mr. Wilkes had retired as an Assistant Manager for Wal-Mart. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War. Mr. Wilkes was a member of Mullins First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Ready Sunday School Class.
Surviving Mr. Wilkes in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Linda Archer of Sylvan Grove, Kan.; a son, Tim Wilkes of Okatie; four grandchildren, Michael Archer, Andrea Archer, Ryan Wilkes and Kaylee Wilkes; a step-granddaughter, Brandi Crosby; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Wallace Wilkes of Pittsburgh; and a sister, Kathryn Goreman of Florida.
Memorials may be made to Mullins First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, S.C. 29574.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Wilkes at 1001 Myrtle St., Mullins.
Jeanne H. Webster
MULLINS -- Jeanne Hardwick Webster, 53, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 at her residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 at Mullins First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Cedardale cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Jeanne was born July 24, 1948 in Marion County, a daughter of Zilphia "Zip" Martin Hardwick and the late John Lacy "J.L." Hardwick Jr. Jeanne was a registered nurse with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, where she worked with Home Health Services and acted as school nurse for Palmetto Junior High. She was a graduate of Mullins High School and a graduate of Greenville General Hospital School of Nurses. Jeanne was a member of Mullins First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
Surviving Jeanne in addition of her mother of Mullins are two daughters, Ginger Ray of Mullins and Joni Webster of Florence; a grandson, Jamison Ray of Mullins; a sister, Susan Ford, and her husband Travis of Lancaster; and two nephews, Spencer Ford and Cal Ford, both of Lancaster.

Elizabeth Melton Lamb
FLORENCE -- Elizabeth Melton Lamb, 90, of 1207 N. Cashua Drive, died early Friday morning, Dec. 28, 2001 in a Florence health care facility.
Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 at Belin United Methodist Church cemetery in Murrells Inlet. Burial will follow directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lamb was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Louie and Minnie Iseman Sturgeon. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Florence and had also served as a volunteer at Bruce Hospital.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Braska J. Melton; second husband, Bazen G. Lamb; daughter, Carolyn M. Brannom; sister, Elma S. Melton; and grandson, Sumner Melton.
Surviving are a son, James E. (Shirley) Melton Sr. of Florence; daughter, Joyce Melton Vinson of Florence; sister, Ella Mae S. Kay of Gainesville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Melton, 607 Ascot Drive, Florence.
Julia Mae Dixon Jackson
DARLINGTON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Mae Dixon Jackson will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at The Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Darlington with the Rev. Cynthia V. Brown, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Jordan Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Jackson was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late Willie Dixon and Pearline Franklin Dixon Carolina.
She departed this life Tuesday, Dec. 24 at Downstate Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., after an illness.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Christine (Preston Sr.) Benjamin and Mrs. Gwendolyn "Nell" (Roosevelt) Graham of Darlington; six grandchildren, Mr. Minjuann Jackson, whom she reared as her own, Mr. Preston Jackson Jr., Mrs. Jacqueline (Derrick) Price, Mr. Tremayne (Kai) Graham, Ms. Yolande Graham and Mr. Roosevelt Graham III; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Dixon and Mrs. Ernestine Dixon Robinson; a special cousin, Mrs. Edith Neal McCrea; and two goddaughters, Minister Barbara Jean Pickard and Mrs. Diane Bacote Pate.
The family is receiving friends at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Gwendolyn and Roosevelt Graham, 111 Henry St., Darlington.
Mary Marie K. Bass
MULLINS -- Mrs. Mary Marie King Bass, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at Mullins Church of God, with the Rev. Scott Shirley officiating. Burial will follow in Cedardale cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bass was born Sept. 14, 1921 in Lake View, a daughter of the late Frank and Dora Harrelson King. Mrs. Bass was a homemaker. She was a member of Mullins Church of God.
Surviving Mrs. Bass are a son, Hallon Bass Jr. and his wife Queta of Mullins; eight daughters, Martha Cook and her husband Grady of Dillon, Janet Price and her husband Wattie of Dillon, Dean Poston and her husband William of Mullins, Linda Strickland and her husband Wesley of Galivants Ferry, Patricia Shackleford and her husband Richard of Marion, Debbie Lee of Mullins, Dora Lee Wright and her companion Richard Fisher of Fairmont, N.C. and Cynthia Bass of Mullins; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence King of Lake View.
Mrs. Bass was predeceased by a son, James Carey Bass.

Edwin Cotesworth Cuttino
SUMTER -- Edwin Cotesworth Cuttino, 81, husband of Pretto Brunson Cuttino, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at Tuomey Healthcare System.
born in Sumter on Dec. 2, 1920 he was a son of the late Charles Lynam Cuttino and Marguerite Tindal Cuttino.
Mr. Cuttino was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Cuttino was an outstanding athlete, winning many awards in basketball, swimming, diving, tennis and golf. He was elected to the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. He graduated from Washington and Lee University where he was captain of the basketball team and a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He served as chairman of the Independent Insurance Agents, chairman of the Board of Directors of Sunset Country Club and of the Y.M.C.A. Board. Mr. Cuttino was a storyteller extraordinnaire, entertaining his family and friends for years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 15, Sumter Lions Club and Elks Club. He was a member and former president of the Sumter Assembly, the Cotillion Club and the Thalian Club. For many years he was an active member of the Godfather's Group. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years of Sumter; three sons, Edwin Cotesworth Cuttino Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Judson Pringle Cuttino and his wife, Debby, of Savannah, Ga., Thomas Allen Cuttino and his wife, Cathy Jo, of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Cuttino Snyder of Sumter and Marguerite Cuttino Haynsworth of Norfolk, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mary Leigh Otey of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Judge Charles L. Cuttino Jr. and Colonel Thomas E. Cuttino.
Graveside services will be at noon Monday, Dec. 31 in Sumter cemetery with Dr. Edward McLeod officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home, 11 Calhoun Drive.

Betty Jean Baxley
SCRANTON -- Betty Jean Frye Baxley, 61, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Mrs. Baxley was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late William Davis and Ethel Bennett Frye. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Joyce (Sam) Broad and Teresa (Barry) Prosser, both of Scranton; a sister, Letha (Ed) Clayton of Columbia; a brother, Charles (Janice) Frye of Georgetown; two grandsons, Travis Prosser and Dustin Prosser, both Scranton; two granddaughters, Tiffany (Robbie) Smith and Brittney Broad, both of Scranton; a great-granddaughter, Meggan Smith of Scranton; and a special family, The Prosser Family.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 in Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2019 S. Friendfield Road, Scranton, S.C. 29591.

DARLINGTON -- Funeral services for Mr. Eddie Lee Robinson Sr. will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at Palmetto Baptist Church in Darlington with Dr. E.B. Burroughs, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Robinson died Friday, Dec. 28 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness.
Survivors include five children, Patrice (Artiss) Bess, Iris Robinson and Eddie Lee Robinson Jr., all of Darlington, Christopher Brock and Anthony Brock of Florence; seven brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Tucker and Helen Moody of Richmond, Va., Mary (J.C.) McCuller, Lillie D. Claitt, Emma Tindal, Roscoe (Barbara) Davis and George Davis all of Darlington; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; nine grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Larry T. Gibbons
LAKE CITY -- Mr. Larry Thomas Gibbons, 50, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 at a Columbia hospital after an illness. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Bobby Morris, Newman Branch Road, New Zion.
born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Thomas Hazel Gibbons and Annie Bell Gowdy Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons was employed by Hughes Landscaping Company.
Surviving are a brother, W. Glenn (Maurice) Gibbons of New Zion; a sister, Charlotte Tisdale of Turbeville; a niece, Denise Todd; two nephews, William G. Gibbons Jr. and Ronald A. Joseph G. Benton
COWARD -- Joseph Grady Benton, 61, of 5828 N. Old Georgetown Road, died early Friday morning, Dec. 28, 2001 at his residence after an illness.
Mr. Benton was born in Horry County, a son of the late Clarence and May Bright Benton. He attended Southside Baptist Church and was formerly employed by La-Z-Boy Chair Co. and by Jack's Mobile Home Service. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Gwendolyn Marie Powell Benton of Coward; two sons, Joseph L. Benton of Florence and Sgeve Benton of Effingham; four step daughters, Suzanne Prosser and Tammy Terry both of Coward, Teresa Hutto of Columbia and Debbie Strickland of Gaston; four brothers, Houston Benton and Ralph Benton both of Wampee, Laverne Hewett of Effingham and Jackie Hewett of Florence; four sisters, Laura Jane Lee of Florence, Grace Summersett of Charleston, Eula Wright of Mt. Pleasant and Bobby Nell Thompson of Fayetteville, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Florence National cemetery.

Judy Dianne Ham
TIMMONSVILLE -- Judy Dianne Ham, 53, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 in a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late Johnny and Edna Gardner Ham. She was formerly employed at Wal-Mart in Hartsville. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses, Hartsville Congregation.
Surviving are three brothers, Allen G. (Doris) Ham of Dovesville, Leroy G. (Mattie) Ham of Timmonsville and Carroll R. Ham of Yazoo, Miss; a sister, Myrtle Grooms of Darlington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy G. Ham, 405 N. Sansbury Road, Timmonsville.
Evangelist Gracie B. Johnson
FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Evangelist Gracie B. Johnson will be conducted 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Zion Chapel Holiness Church in Effingham. Burial will follow in the Sellers cemetery in Effingham. She died on December 22, 2001.

Almander 'Al' Williams
DARLINGTON -- Funeral service for Mr. Almander "Al" Williams will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 in Lawson Grove Baptist Church, Darlington County with the Rev. Wilbert White, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Williams died Monday, Dec. 24 in a Darlington hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County a son of Levern and Charlena Sansbury Williams.
He attended Darlington County public schools. At an early age, he joined Lawson Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Williams spent most of his adult life in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was gainfully employed and was a member of Mt. Sion Baptist Church and served as an usher. Because of his declining health, he returned to Darlington in 1991.
Survivors include his parents of Darlington; two sisters, Ms. Reather W. Jackson and Ms. Annette W. Flynn, both of Darlington; four brothers, Levern (Resa) Williams Jr. and Charles (Corine) Williams, both of New York, Henry J. (Marlene) Williams and Bernard Williams, both of Darlington; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Myrtlee Williams of Darlington; uncles; aunts; nieces; and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Barney Williams Sr., Roland and Ethel Lee Sansbury.
The family is receiving friends at the residence of his parents, 913 Rogers Road, Darlington.
