Reverend Monsignor Donald Clarence Hamburger
COLUMBIA — Monsignor Donald Clarence Hamburger, a retired priest in the Diocese of Charleston, died on Saturday, December 18, in Columbia. He was 86.
Monsignor Hamburger was born on June 28, 1918 in Celina, Ohio. He was a son of the late August Francis Hamburger and the late Estella Bernard Hamburger.
Monsignor Hamburger attended St. Peter’s Parochial School and Wardlaw Junior High. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1935. Monsignor Hamburger attended seminary school at St. Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio and Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Norwood, Ohio.
Monsignor Hamburger was ordained to the priesthood on July 14, 1946 by Bishop Emmet M. Walsh at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston. He celebrated his first Mass on July 21, 1946 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Columbia. He was named Monsignor on September 12, 1963.
During his 58 years of ministry, Monsignor Hamburger was Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Joseph’s Parish, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. Mary’s Parish in Charleston. He served as Administrator at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Charleston and St. John of the Cross Parish in Batesburg. Monsignor Hamburger was pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Camden, St. Joseph’s Parish in Charleston, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Greenwood, Corpus Christi Parish in Lexington, St. Peter’s Parish in Beaufort, St. James Parish in Conway and Church of the Resurrection Mission in Loris. He also spent two years studying cannon law at St. Leo’s Parish in Chicago, Ill. and was a First Lieutenant, Chaplain, in the National Guard of the United States. Monsignor Hamburger retired as pastor in 1991, but continued his priestly ministry until his death.
In addition to parish work, Monsignor Hamburger served on the faculty at Bishop England High School and was Vice-Chancellor and Officialis for the diocese. He was a Synodal Judge of the Tribunal, Dean of the Midlands Deanery and Deacon for the Synod. Monsignor Hamburger served as a member of the Matrimonial Tribunal, the Presbyterial Council and College of Consultors.
Additionally, he was Moderator of the Columbia Deanery Council of Catholic Men and the State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus.
Monsignor Hamburger is survived by two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Watson Hamburger and Eoline Bradford Hamburger of Columbia. He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews including Mary Lynn Hamburger Guettler of Rock Hill; Patricia Hamburger Smith of Ridgeland; Carol Hamburger Caggiano of Spartanburg; Martha Ann Hamburger Spotts of Atlanta, Ga.; Alice Hamburger Sloan and Evelyn Hamburger Abernathy of Columbia; Stella Hamburger Hazel of Walterboro; Donald Joseph Hamburger of Charleston; Charles David Hamburger of Mt. Pleasant, Margaret Hamburger Loignon of Kinards; John Bradford Hamburger of Herndon, Va.; Robert Bernard Hamburger of Dalgren, Va.; and Kathryn Hamburger Bull of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by 29 grandnieces and grandnephews, 9 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews and three first cousins. He was predeceased by brothers Wilfred John Hamburger, Carl Leo Hamburger, and Paul Roman Hamburger.
A wake service will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Columbia on Monday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Columbia on Tuesday, December 21 at 11:00 a.m.

Naomi Culbreath Lindsay
Naomi Elizabeth Culbreath Lindsay, 82, of 203 North Bethune St., widow of Robert D. Lindsay, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at her home.
born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Jessie Butler Culbreath. She was a member of the Branch Hill United Methodist Church, Saluda, S.C. She was an entrepreneur, an active member of the community and civic organizations, a life member of the NAACP and was last employed by the Clemson Extension.
Survivors include four sons, Charles A. Lindsay, Philadelphia, Douglas O. Lindsay and Richard Lindsay, both of Greenwood and Alvin Lindsay of Atlanta; three daughters, Rhunett R. Lindsay and Beulah J. Lindsay, both of Atlanta, Naomi Lindsay Jackson of Manhattan, N.Y.; two sisters, Annie Ruth Smith, Conshohocken, Pa. and Amanda Spain of Dallas; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Branch United Methodist Church, Chappells, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Tommy Ligons, assisted by the Revs. Bobby Gordon, Michael Butler, Fred Armfield and Anderson Robinson. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ralph Lindsay Jr., Alvin Lindsay Jr., Patrice Lindsay, Kevin Chamberlain, Robert Lindsay, Nigel Lindsay, Antar Lindsay and Gregory Lindsay.

DONALDS — Robert Lee Miller Sr., 73, of 288 Haddon Road, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at Anderson Area Medical Center. born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Tommie Lee and Willie Mae Butler Miller. He was a graduate of Ware Shoals High School, a member of Dunn Creek Baptist Church and Dunn Creek Masonic Lodge No. 302. He worked at Riegel and Chiquola Mills. Survivors include his wife, Nannie Posley Miller, of the home; three sons, Robert Lee Miller Jr., Donalds, Melvin Miller, Birmingham, Ala., and Rev. Tony Miller Sr., Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Mary M. Suber, Newberry and Dianne M. Marcelly, Donalds; two brothers, J.T. Sylvester and Johnny Miller, both of Detroit; two sisters, Katherine Wright, Detroit and Bernice M. Perkins, Greenwood; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Dunn Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James F. Davis III. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.

John Willie Smith
SPRINGDALE, MD. — John Willie Smith, 63, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at Doctor’s Community Hospital.
born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Jessie Smith and Ruby Wideman Lake. He was a former member of Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Promised Land Community, attended public schools in Greenwood County and was a former employee with A.M. Tuck.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Wilson Smith of the home; a brother, James A. Smith of Lexington, S.C.; three sons, Larry Smith and Curtis Contee, both of Springdale, Md., John W. Smith Jr. of Greenwood; four daughters, Vanessa Brown, Pasandra Dougann, Sheira Gutdh, and Angela Jefferson, all of Springdale, Md.
Services will be in Springdale Md.

Willie Mae “Mo” Williams, 78, of 207 Siloam Church Road, widow of the late Roosevelt Williams, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Mary D. Jones. She retired from Greenwood Cleaners, formerly One-Hour Martinizing. She was a member of Pine Grove A.M.E. Church where she was a Trustee, former President of Lay Organization and a member of the Missionary Society. She was also a member of Stellar Chapter No. 337 O.E.S., Women Home Aide No. 85 and Bailey Bethel Singing Convention.
Survivors include a son, Clyde Jones of Denville, N.J.; three daughters, Mary Lee Hearst, Lillie Bell Jones, both of Greenwood, Eddie Mae Johnson of Promised Land; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late David L. and Bessie Gillis Holladay. She was retired from Kemet and employed by Health Related Personnel. She was a member of Pine Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church in Edgefield.
Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Claphan of Greenwood and Deborah Butler of Abbeville; a sister, Gladys Delores Meyer of Socrates, N.Y.; two brothers, Bobby Holladay and Horace Holladay, both of Ninety Six; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

born in Bradley, S.C., she attended the University of South Carolina.

NINETY SIX – Manuel “M.L.” Leopard, 77, resident of 813 Johnston Road, husband of Beatrice Johnson Leopard, died December 16, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
born in Saluda County, September 11, 1927, he was a son of the late Henry and Cloranne Berry Leopard. Mr. Leopard retired in supervision from Greenwood Mills, Adams Plant.
A member of Cambridge United Methodist Church, he was also a member of the Greenwood Mills Quarter Century Club, Eureka Masonic Lodge #47 and was an honorary member of the SC Sheriff’s Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Peggy and husband Derrell Calvert of Ninety Six; two sons, Terry and wife, Iris Leopard of Greenwood and Andy and wife, Donna Leopard of Ninety Six; grandchildren, Michael and Natalie Slice of Savannah, GA, Jeff and Tarah Graham, Amanda Graham, Carmen Leopard and Jonah Leopard, all of Ninety Six; great-grandson, Garrett Graham of Ninety Six; sister-in-law, Louise Pilkenton of Ninety Six and brother-in-law, James and wife, Helen Johnson of Ninety Six; a niece, Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Buff of Greenwood.
Mr. Leopard was predeceased by a brother, Ray Leopard.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3PM Saturday at Cambridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Gayle Summey and Rev. Steve Justice officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Peter R. Maye, Sr. and Katie Estell Wood Maye and a stepson of the late Lucy Harling Maye. He was retired from Kroger and was a painter. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Charles Maye.
Surviving is his wife of the home; two daughters, Diane Bobo of Donalds and Cindy Groulx of St. Augustine, FL; a son, Anthony Maye of Greenwood; stepchildren, Debbie Ellis and Bubba Walker, both of North Augusta, Nellie Sorrow and Eddy Walker and Danny Walker, all of Greenwood and Jimmy Walker of Kingston, TN; a sister, Thelma Gardner of Sunnyvale, CA; two brothers, Peter R.
