Kathleen Sims Conway, 73, formerly of 115 Highland Dr., widow of Grayson Conway, died Sunday, April 11, 2004 at Oakmont Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. Conway was born in Union, Oct. 14, 1930, a daughter of the late Burdette and Thelma Sims. She was a graduate of Union High School Class of 1947 and attended the University of South Carolina and remained a devoted Gamecock fan.
Mrs. Conway retired after 30 years in customer service with Union Federal Savings & Loan Bank and was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. Mrs. Conway is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are two nephews, Howard L. (Butch) Jones Jr. and Alfred B. Jones, both of Columbia. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Sims Jones. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Robert Emory. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
Memorials may be made to the Joy Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Helen Marie Hill
Helen Marie Hill, 90, widow of Fred Hill, formerly of 113 Hayes Dr., Union, died Friday, April 9, 2004 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Hill was born in Sweetwater, Va., Oct. 19, 1913, a daughter of the late Charles Morgan Lawson and Ceiley Ann Maness Lawson and a stepdaughter of the late Nora Belle Lawson. Mrs. Hill was retired form Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, and a member of the Ottaray Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Mrs. Hill is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are a son, Bobby Dean Hill of Union; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Lois Grant. Mrs. Hill was predeceased by two daughters, Juanita Verle Hill Hayes and Mary Jo Hill Brewington; a son, Ted E. Lawson, and a grandson, Steven Brewington. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at Ottaray Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Crocker.
Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Joey Guyton, Chris Brewington, Allen Bright, Gene Quinn, Dean Quinn, Brent Littlejohn and Jason Yarborough. Staff and nurses at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home formed the honorary escort. The family received friends at the funeral Home Sunday night. The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Gail Southard, 1327 Santuc Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Felicia H. Stevens
elicia Hooker Stevens, 41, of 1601 Berry Farm Road, wife of Dewayne D. (Moe) Stevens, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was born in Union County Aug. 21, 1962, a daughter of Howard Hooker and Cora Lee Spencer Hooker. She was a member of the Outreach Deliverance Center and was employed with the Chester/Lancaster Disability & Special Needs Board, direct support staff as a special care associate. Mrs. Stevens was a 1980 graduate of Union High School.
Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two daughters, Cyselli T. (Cissy) Hooker of Carlisle and Abbenee B. (Bonnie) Hooker of the home and a brother, Howard Dewayne (Mary A.) Hooker of Carlisle. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at James Chapel Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Eddie McConnell, Minister Leroy Edwards Jr., Evangelist Maxine Spencer and the Rev. Johnnie C. Edwards.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers and flower bearers will be members of the Union High School Class of 1980. Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. Tuesday. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her parents, 124 Clearbranch Road, Carlisle. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Thomas Vinson, 79, husband of Zora Johnson Vinson of 644 Peach Orchard Road, Union, died Monday morning, April 12, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Thomas Vinson, 79, husband of Zora Johnson Vinson of 644 Peach Orchard Road, Union, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at 6:33 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Vinson was born in Union on March 15, 1925, a son of the late Thomas and Mamie Mitchell Vinson. He was a member of Brown's Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Vinson was retired after 44 years service with Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons and daughters-in-law, Hoyle Thomas Vinson and wife Harriette W. Vinson of Union, James E. Vinson and wife Becky Vinson of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Harold Dean Vinson and wife Patti Vinson of Spartanburg; two sisters, Gertrude Duckett and Corine Hart, both of Union; four brothers, Jeff Vinson, Jake Vinson, Jack Vinson and H.A. (Buck) Vinson, all of Union; two grandchildren, the Rev. Hoyle T. Vinson Jr., Laryssa V. Bryant and husband Paul; and a great-grandson, Thomas Allen Vinson.
Mr. Vinson was predeceased by a brother, J. E Vinson. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Brown's Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Joe Stover and the Rev. Tommy Kelly. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Wayne Vinson, Terry Vinson, Tommy Vinson, Jack Rector, Robin Duckett and Donald Hope Howell. Members of Mr. Vinson's Sunday School Class, Senior Adult, are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

Derrill E. Schumpert Sr.
Derrill Ernest Schumpert Sr., 71, of 313 Brookside Drive, husband of Millie H. Schumpert, died at his home Friday, April 11, 2003, at 8:28 a.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Schumpert was born in Newberry on May 9, 1931, a son of the late Francis Marion Schumpert and Kizzie Henson Schumpert.
He was a graduate of Newberry High School, attended Clemson University and was a graduate of Newberry College. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and also served as Financial Chairman for numerous years. He was a member of the Union County Chamber of Commerce where he served as president in 1976 and 1977, he was a charter member of the Union Civitan Club where he had served as president and secretary and was named Man of the Year in 1968 and 1969 and was a former member of the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Schumpert was retired president and CEO at Union Federal Savings and Loan where he served over 35 years.
He was first married to the late Frances Sanders Schumpert. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and David Nichols of Rock Hill and Ann and Chuck Foster of Fort Mill; a son and daughter-in-law, Derrill E. Shumpert Jr. and Paula Schumpert of Fort Mill; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Patrick Sullivan of San Francisco, Calif., and Carol and Carlton Craig of Asheville; a step-son and daughter-in-law, David and Julie Hancock of Burlington, N.C.; a sister, Doris Schumpert Gardner of Newberry; an aunt, Elizabeth Miller of Lexington; 11 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Schumpert was predeceased by a sister, Frances Schumpert Bennett. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial was in the Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were the following nephews: Jimmy Bennett, David Bennett, Todd Bennett, Chris Bennett, and Howard Wells, Scott White, Chip Alexander and Al Maxwell.
The following formed the honorary escort: members of the Union Civitan Club and Claude Finley, Dr. Jeffrey Craft, Chester Todd and Lynn Eaves. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday from 6:30 until 8:30 and was placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Window Fund, P.O. Box 446, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Hospice Care of S. C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Emzy Smith
HAMPTON, Va. Emzy Smith of Hampton, Va., died Friday, April 11, 2003. A native of Union County, He was a son of the late James A. and R. Meader Smith. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and attended Union County public schools. Mr. Smith was retired from the shipyard.
Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline Smith and Charlene Smith; two grandsons, Trenton Smith and Nyland Bryant; six sisters, Elizabeth Walker, Joleane Smith, Elnora Smith, Shirley Smith, Jimmie Smith and Mildred Smith Adams; and three brothers, James Smith, Henry Smith and Harold Smith. Pearl R. Chandler
ORLANDO, Fla. Pearl Roseline Chandler, 81, beloved wife of her late husband, Howard Vernon Chandler, of Orlando, Fla., died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, after a long illness. Mrs. Chandler was born in Morgantown, W.Va., Feb. 16, 1923, a daughter of the late Moffat Hill Chapman and Belva May Perkins Chapman.
She graduated from Morgantown High School and attended Valencia Community College in Orlando. She was formerly employed by Harry E. Leu Company as an executive secretary. Pearl was a wonderful housewife. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Orlando and a member of the Chapel Class and sang in the Chancel Choir previously. She taught 2- and 3-year-old Sunday School for many years.
Surviving are a son, the Rev. Philip E. Chandler of Buffalo; a daughter, Brenda C. Chandler of Orlando, Fla., and two grandchildren, Danielle N. Chandler and Ryan S. Chandler, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two step-grandchildren, Richard and Virginia Collins of Buffalo; a brother, Robert Chapman of Norfolk, Va., and was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Virginia Christy, Gilden and Minter Chapman.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Orlando Organ Fund, 142 E. Jackson St., Orlando, Fla., 32801. The Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Margaret R. Earls
Margaret Roberts Earls, 80, wife of Horace A. Earls of 674 Peach Orchard Road, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at 9:31 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Earls was born in Hartsville on Nov. 22, 1923, a daughter of the late William Terry and Hattie Evelyn Strickland Roberts. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mrs. Earls was retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Jackie W. Earls Sr. and wife Arlene B. Earls of Union; two daughters and sons-in-law, Frankie Ivey and husband Lofton (Pete) Ivey of Union and Joan A. Williford and husband, S.W. Williford of Hickory, N.C.; four brothers, Colman Roberts, Leroy Roberts and Billy Roberts, all of Union, and Bobby Roberts of Flint, Mich.; a sister, Bernice Bush of Union; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Earls was predeceased by a brother and two sisters, Edward Roberts, Gaynelle May and Betty J. Eubanks. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints conducted by President Michael Roberts and Brother Joseph Lawson. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Earls, Jackie W. Earls Jr., Billy F. Blackwood Jr., Marc Williford, Terry Roberts and John Eubanks. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Frankie and Pete Ivey, 664 Peach Orchard Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
