Vincent J. Pewdo, age 91, died Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at Conway Nursing Center.
Mr. Pewdo was born in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Joseph Alec and Frances Prochaska Panek. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and retired as a master diesel mechanic.
Surviving are his wife Joyce J. Pewdo of Conway; three sons Joseph Campbell of CA, Bob Crawford of Maryland and John Hornung of PA; three daughters, Nadene Yohe and Suzi Harrelson both of Conway and Frances Mitchell of CA; fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with Rev. Kirk Lawton officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
Rev. James C. Ward
born in Horry County, SC, on Sep. 20, 1937
Departed on Aug. 27, 2003 and resided in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Rev. James Carl Ward, Sr., age 65, of Sweet Home Church Road, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at his residence following an illness.
Mr. Ward was born in Horry County, SC, a son of the late Rev. James Bice and Leona Flowers Ward. He was a member and former pastor of Sweet Home Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Richardson Ward of Socastee; four sons, Andy Ward, David Ward, and Rev. Carl Ward, Jr., all of Socastee and Randy Ward of Rutherford, NC; two daughters, Della Johnson and Teresa Todd both of Socastee; three brothers, Rev. Henry Ward, Bice Ward, Jr., and Lora Ward all of Socastee; three sisters, Ellar Richardson, Nova Stapleton and Patsy Thomas all of Socastee; fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday at Sweet Home Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Hyman and Rev. Larry Greenwood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Frank William Dewan
born in Huntington Park, CA, on May. 17, 1938
Departed on Aug. 21, 2003 and resided in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Frank William Dewan, Jr., Chief Petty Officer USN Retired, age 65, of Teague Road, died Thursday, August 21, 2003 of a heart attack at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Dewan was born in Huntington Park, CA, a son of the late Frank Willliam Dewan, Sr. and Bernice Violet Woornel Dewan. He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach and was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of AAHMES Temple in Livermore, CA. Mr. Dewan was a member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonary and a Past Grand Master of Oddfellows of San Leandro, CA. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict and retired from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, Submariner serving on the nuclear submarines, the USS Thresher and the USS Plunger. Later he served on the Investigative Inquiry Board of the sinking of the USS Thresher. Upon retiring he was Director of Contract Administrator at Todds Shipyard in San Francisco, CA. After moving to the south, he was Contract Administrator at Braswell Shipyard in Charleston, SC and the Panama Canal. He was currently employed at Myrtle Beach Airport.
Surviving are his wife Catherine Marlowe Dewan of Myrtle Beach; one son Frank William Dewan, III of Broken Arrow, OK; three daughters, Elizabeth Robin McAlister of Owasso, OK, Bernice Bjorklund and Christina Dewan both of Tulsa, OK; one step-daughter, Deborah Vader Bailey of Surfside Beach; one brother, Robert H. Dewan of Santa Clarita, CA and one sister, Patricia Wagoner of Bozeman, Montana; eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with the Rev. Bill Bagnal and Rev. Bob Taylor officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Pauley Swamp Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Bertha Mae Berry
SALUDA — Bertha Mae DeLoach Berry, 72, of 554 Bethany Schoolhouse Road, wife of Calhoun Berry, died Sept. 20, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
born in Edgefield County, she was a daughter of the late John Pierce and Bertha Padgett DeLoach. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Louis Berry and Joe David Berry, both of Saluda; five sisters, Agnes Bledsoe of Saluda, Sally Ruth Lomax of Spartanburg, Madge Dalton of Newport News, Va., Mattie Foster of Shelby, N.C., and Lois Tate of Greenville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethany United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tony Rowell. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.

Virgil J. Griffith
SALUDA - Virgil Jennings Griffith, 85, of 1303 Greenwood Hwy., died Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
born in Saluda County and a son of the late George Washington and Kate Boatwright Griffith, he was the husband of Maude Lee Duffie Green Griffith. He was first married
to the late Daisy Florilla Bush Griffith. Mr. Griffith was a retired Dairyman and during World War II he was in the Civil Conservation Corp. and worked as a Shipfitter with the Kiser Corporation in Vancouver, WA. He was a former Saluda County Farmer Of The Year and was named by the Progressive Farmer Magazine 'Grassland King Of The South.' Mr. Griffith was a Mason and member of the Travis Lodge and was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Maude Lee Duffie Green Griffith, two sons and daughters-in-law, Randolph Jennings Griffith and Bonnie S. Griffith of Fort Lauderdale, FL and George Stephen Griffith and Marci Ann Griffith of Plano, TX; one daughter, Sharon E. Griffith of Clarkesville, GA; two sisters, Vivian Webb of Saluda and Kate Mullinax of Ware Shoals; one brother, James B. Griffith of Charlotte; five grandsons, Trevor Smith, Trent Smith and Kevin Smith, all of Clarkesville, GA; Taylor Jennings Griffith and Trace Davis Griffith, both of Plano, TX; two step-daughters, Linda Hammond of West Columbia and Norman Pilot of Saluda; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 4:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2001, at Good Hope Baptist Church.
Interment will follow in Mayson Memorial cemetery.

GREENWOOD — Services for Julius Logan Sr. will be conducted at 1 Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church, Ninety Six, by the Rev. Jonathan Greene, assisted by the Revs. Velma Willford, Daisy Floyd, Bernard White and Herman Logan. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in Mount Zion Baptist Church, Coronaca.
Pallbearers are Rufus Logan Jr., Kevin Wideman, Reggie Jackson, Ryans Logan, Bryan Logan and Tyrone Jackson.

SALUDA — Robert James Lurk, 53, of 806 Johnston Highway, died Sept. 19, 2001.
born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Sammie and Betty Bryant Lurk. He was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church, a 1966 graduate of Riverside High School and a former employee of Greenwood Mills, Sloan Plant.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephine Lurk of Greenville; four brothers, Sammie Lurk Jr. of Patterson, N.J., James Lurk of Greenwood, Albert Lurk of Saluda and Henry Lurk of Philadelphia; three sisters, Sarah Graham, Barbara J. Lurk and Betty J. Miles, all of Saluda; and three grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a sister, Barbara J. Lurk, 806 Johnston Highway.

Ida Ruth Seigler
GREENWOOD — Ida Ruth Seigler, of 513 Taggart Ave., died Sept. 20, 2001, at her home.
born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late Inez Seigler Wardlaw and stepdaughter of Lewis Wardlaw.
Survivors include four brothers, Willie, Lloyd, Clarence and Ben Seigler, all of Greenwood; two sisters, Theresa and Angela Seigler, both of Greenwood; and two stepsisters, Effie Lee Turner of Atlanta and Irene Washington of Greenwood.
Visitation is from 7-9 Sunday at the home.

Lewis Joe Rogers
McCORMICK — Lewis Joe Rogers, 58, of 505 Brown St., McCormick, husband of Joann Sibert Rogers, died at Self Memorial Hospital, Thursday, September, 27, 2001, after a sudden illness.
He was a son of the late Joe and Laura Jane Tompson Rogers.
He was a member of the Mt. Hebron A.M.E. Church in Calhoun Falls and was employed in construction.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four daughters, Shenetta Renee Rogers of the home; Judith R. Ruiz, of Greenwood; Cynthia Rogers and Jeanette Rogers, both of Virginia; two sons, Lewis Antonia Rogers of the home and Leon Sibert of McCormick; three sisters, Lillie Mae Rogers and Lucille Rogers, both of Calhoun Falls and Lelia Robinson of Raleigh; a brother, Charles Rogers of Calhoun Falls and ten grandchildren.
The family is at the home, 505 Brown St., McCormick.

WARE SHOALS — William Paul Wells, 85, of 5460 Highway 252, died Sept. 27, 2001, at his home.
born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Henry Preston and Effie Christine Crawford Wells. He retired from Eastwill Sportswear and was a cattle farmer and a member of Young Farmers of Hickory Tavern. He was also member of Ware Shoals First Presbyterian Church and Ware Shoals Masonic Lodge No. 306 and a Hejaz Shriner.
Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Wells of the home and Shirley Adams of Hodges; and three brothers, Olin Wells of the home, Horace Wells and Edgar Wells, both of Ware Shoals.
Services will be conducted at 3 Saturday at Ware Shoals First Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Wayne Wicker, Robert Emory, Charles Caldwell and Lamar Babb. Burial, with Masonic rites, is in Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Mike Wells, Steve Wells, James H. Wells Jr., Keith Smith, J.E. Brock and Billy Cann.
