Frances Hodges
WARE SHOALS — Frances Calvert Hodges, 70, of 15 Circle St., widow of Lowery P. Hodges, died Sept. 25, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Bertha Vanadore Calvert. She retired from Riegel Textile Corp. and was a member of at Sharon Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two sons, Riegel Hodges and Ronnie Hodges, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Sally Prill and Maxine Davis, both of Ware Shoals; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 4 Friday at Sharon Pentecostal Holiness Church, Laurens County, by the Revs. J.C. Sorrow and Bobby Humphries. The body will be placed in the church at 3. Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park, Greenwood.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.

George Casto
HODGES — George Dud Casto, 36, of 2715 Ridge Road, died Sept. 14, 2001, at his home.
born in Elkhard, Ind., he was a son of Robert K. Casto of Canton, Ohio and Beatrice C. Rackley of Hodges. He had been employed by Harris Plant and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons, Adam Walter Casto and George Dud Casto Jr. of Cedar Grove, W.Va.; one daughter, Jennifer Nicole Cordle of Cedar Grove, W.Va.; three brothers, Michael Lee Casto and Ted Franklin Casto of Ware Shoals and Robert K. Casto Jr. of Canton, Ohio.
Graveside services are at 11 Monday at Ware Shoals cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Gayle Summey.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of his mother, Mrs. Rackley, 7009 Highway 25 North, Hodges.

GRAY COURT — Oleta Godfrey Gambrell, 84, of 13308 Highway 76 West, widow of James M. Gambrell, died Sept. 15, 2001, at Laurens County Hospital.
born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd C. and Aura Walker Godfrey. She was retired from Oxford Industries and was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Laurens.
Survivors include three brothers, the Rev. Dr. Haskell Godfrey of Valdosta, Ga., Ferrell Godfrey of Reva, Va. and James Godfrey of Hodges; four sisters, Mrs. Warren “Mildred” Pressley of Hickory Tavern, Mrs. Raye Caldwell of Ware Shoals, Mrs. Thomas “Ruby” Lyon of Harwood, Md. and Mrs. Horace “Mary” Paige of Asheville, N.C.

Roger Green
FAIRBURN, Ga. — Roger Lee Green, 53, of 256 Kite Lake Road, husband of Elizabeth Parker Green, died Sept. 12, 2001, at the Veteran Administration Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.
He was a graduate of Mims High School in McCormick and a member of Laura Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two daughters, Angela Jenkins of McCormick and Wanda Bowdre of Martinez, Ga.; a son, Roger L. Green II of Fairburn; mother, Hattie Bell Scott Green of Clarks Hill, Ga.; three sisters, Sabrena Green of Clarks Hill, Ga., Julia “Rudolph” Baldwin of Long Island, N.Y. and Helen Carter of Lithonia, Ga.; three brothers, Eugene Green of Atlanta, Jimmy Green of Greenwood and Abner “Andrea” Green of Germany and two grandchildren.
Services are at 2:30 Monday at Laura Grove Baptist Church, Clarks Hill, conducted by the Rev. Paul Bush. Burial is in the church cemetery.

GREENWOOD — Richard Garrison “Ricky” Johnson, 45, of 121 Masters Drive, died Sept. 15, 2001, at his home.
born in Greenwood, he was a son of Joseph M. “Joe” and Nyoda Garrison Scott. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and was employed by C.E. Bourne Inc. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his parents of the home are five sisters, Serena Steifle, June Smith, Paula Bourne, Pam Moats and Debbie Massey, all of Greenwood and a brother, Frankie Johnson of Greenwood.
Graveside services will be at 11 Monday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Chris Garrison.
Pallbearers will be employees of C.E. Bourne Inc., along with Mike and Trisha Steadman and Judy and Ted Bourne.

born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Luther G. and Willie Lou Wiley Scott. He was the retired owner/operator of Scott Shoe Repair for 62 years and a member of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church of Elberton, Ga.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a sister, Helen S. Campbell of Abbeville and a brother, Ralph W. Scott of Calhoun Falls.

George Switzer
GREENWOOD — George Frederick Switzer, 90, husband of Carrie Spencer Switzer, died Sept. 26, 2001, at Wesley Commons.
born in Joliet, Ill., he was a son of the late Walter F. and Harriett Dickinson Switzer. He graduated from Purdue University in 1932, receiving a degree in electrical engineering, and he retired after 42 years of service from Indianapolis Power & Light Co. as vice president of Engineering and Operations. A member of Tranquil United Methodist Church, he was also a member and Past Master of Irvington Masonic Lodge No. 666 F&AM, Indianapolis, and a recipient of the Grand Lodge of Indiana Award. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America in Indianapolis and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of the Alpha Chi Rho Social Fraternity and the Tau Beta Pi and the Eta Kappa Nu Honorary fraternities. Formerly of Indianapolis and North Webster, Ind., he had lived in Greenwood since 1988.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Gerald F. Switzer of Lavonia, Ga., and Stephen E. Switzer of Los Angeles; a sister, Harriet Vescelus of Glendale, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tranquil United Methodist Church by the Rev. James E. Patterson, Dr. Ted Morton and the Rev. Carol Wray. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is at the funeral home from 7-9 Friday.

Henry Burke

CONWAY - Father Henry J. Burke, age 86, a retired priest of the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at his residence following an illness.
Father Burke was born July 5, 1918 in Red Bank, New Jersey a son of the late Harry and Mary Cogan Burke. Father Burke was pre-deceased by two sisters: Agnes Burke and Mary Burke.
Father Burke attended St. James Catholic Elementary and High Schools in Red Bank. He attended St. Charles College Seminary in Catonsville, Maryland and Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, NJ. He was ordained a priest on March 17, 1945 in Trenton, NJ, and that same year joined the Glenmary Home Missioners, serving mission churches in Ohio and Georgia.
Father Burke came to South Carolina in 1948 as Pastor of St. Peter Parish, Cheraw. During that time he transferred from Glenmary to the Diocese of Charleston. As a Priest of the Diocese, he subsequently served at St. Ann, Kingstree; Our Lady, Star of the Sea in North Myrtle Beach; Our Lady of Lourdes in Greenwood; St. Peter in Beaufort; St. Peter in Columbia; Our Lady of the Hills in Columbia. In many of those assignments he simultaneously served mission chapels affiliated with the main parish.
After a sabbatical year, Father Burke was assigned in 1976 as Administrator and first resident Priest at St. James in Conway, along with the Catholic Mission of Loris. Subsequent assignments were at St. Mark Parish, Newberry; St. Andrew, Myrtle Beach: St. Mary Hampton with St. Anthony, Ridgeland. His final pastorate was at St. Mary and St. Cyprian in Georgetown, together with the missions in Andrews and McClellanville. He retired on his 50th anniversary of ordination, March 17, 1995.
In retirement, he lived in Murrells Inlet and later in Conway. He remained active, assisting parishes thoughout Horry, Georgetown and Florence Counties and beyond. He celebrated Masses in both English and Spanish, which he had taught himself, served as Chaplain for Mercy Hospice, and ministered to hospitals and nursing homes. He also continued his active interest in music.
Father Burke has no survivors.
A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at St. James Catholic Church with Bishop Robert Baker of Charleston as main celebrant.
The body will be received at the Church at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, with visitation continuing through a Vigil Service at 7:30PM.
Burial will be private at a later time.

Lorraine L. Altman, age 77, wife of the late Warren K. Altman, of Jackson Lane, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at her residence following an illness.
Mrs. Altman was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Baldie Elbert and Eva Todd Long. She was a member of North Conway Baptist Church and retired from Jerry Cox company after 27 years. Mrs. Altman was predeceased by a brother, Samuel E. Long of Wilmington.
Surviving are four sons, Kenny Altman and his wife Rosa, Tony Altman and his wife Meg and Mike Altman and his wife Angie all of Conway, Eddie Altman and his wife Linda of Lexington, SC; two sisters, Earlene Mishoe and Otance Swann and her husband Jerry all of Wilmington, NC; special sister-in-law Dorenda Long of Wilmington, NC one brother, Baldie Elwood Long and his wife Catherine of Clarendon, NC; six grandchildren, Wayne Altman, Andy Altman, Jody Altman, Tyler Altman, Calvin Wahlstrom all of Conway and Michelle James of Aynor.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday from North Conway Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Brittingham and Rev. Troy Metzner officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
