LAURENS Jessie Barrett Burts, 75, of 7969 Neely Ferry Road, widow of Clarence Everette Burts, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood.
born in Laurens, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Ethel Darnell Barrett. She was an accountant with South Carolina Regional Housing Authority No. 1 for 33 years. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she taught the Youth One Sunday School Class for 18 years and was a member of the Sunshine Class.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dewey (Sandra Burts) McClain of Greenwood and Mrs. Terry (Elizabeth Libby Burts) Copeland and Mrs. Mike (Jayne Burts) Lollis, both of Laurens; a brother, James M. Barrett of Laurens; four sisters, Frances B. Cordery of Anderson, Merita B. Hall of Mauldin and Mary B. Burnett and Martha B. Knox, both of Laurens; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 Friday at Union Baptist Church by the Revs. Bryant Sims and Jack Reid. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Honorary escorts are members of Laurens High School Class of 1945.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 tonight at Kennedy Mortuary.
The family is at the home of Jayne Lollis, 7923 Neely Ferry Road.

SALUDA Aaron Cooper Sr., of 100-A Waters Ave., husband of Leora Townsend Cooper, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.
Services will be conducted at 2 today at Queen Street Baptist Church, Hampton, Va.

Elvira Dorn
GREENWOOD Elvira Martin Dorn, 85, of 302 Orchard Drive, widow of George E. Dorn, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at National Health Care of Greenwood.
born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Jasper and Ellen Leslie Martin. She graduated from Erskine College and taught for many years in Greenwood County public schools. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the South Carolina Contract Bridge League. She was also a member of First Baptist Church and the Benson Sunday School Class and the Never Grow Old Group of the church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 3 Friday at the chapel of First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. J. William Harris and the Rev. Johnson G. Dorn. Burial is at Bethel United Methodist Church, Callison.
Pallbearers are Thomas H. Graves, Martin D. Graves, John D. Graves, Brent Moser, Chris Johnson, Elbert S. Dorn, Steve T. Dorn, Jackson G. Dorn, T. Stanley Dawkins and Bruce Lawrence.
Visitation is in the church parlor from 2-3 Friday.

WATERLOO Frances McFerrin Hildebrand, wife of David Hildebrand, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Essie Lagroon McFerrin. She was a 1937 Greenwood High School graduate, a retiree of Sprint Telephone Co. and a member of the Independent Telephone Pioneers Association. She was a member of Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; and a sister, Evelyn Evatt of Orangeburg.
Services will be conducted at 4 today at Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church, Greenwood, by the Revs. Scott Cloninger and Harvey Peurifoy. The body will be placed in the church at 3. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Kenneth Holt, Mike Ware, Hubert Chandler, Buck Smith, Robert Henderson and Joey Henderson.
Visitation is after the service in the church fellowship hall.

John R. Beatty Sr.
DUE WEST John Robert Beatty Sr., 68, of 8 Brannon Circle, husband of Elizabeth Adams Beatty, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at his home.
born in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Herman and Marie Lego Beatty. He was a retired interstate driver with the Teamsters and a member of Due West Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, John Robert Beatty Jr. of Hawaii; three sisters, Elise Blaher of Maryland, Patricia Holsten of Georgia and Rosalyn Trice of Belton; a brother, Chester Beatty of Maryland; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 Sunday at Due West Baptist Church by the Rev. James Robert Alewine.

BELMONT, N.C. Estelle Greene Stroupe, 86, of 1351 Robinwood Road, Gastonia, widow of Charles T. Stroupe, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at her home at Covenant Village.
born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late John Henry and Essie Davis Greene. She received a bachelor of science degree from Winthrop College, taught at North Belmont School for 39 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Belmont.
Survivors include nieces.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 Friday in Gaston Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert Baker.
Visitation is at 12:30 in the parlor at Covenant Village.
Viewing is at McLean Funeral Directors, Belmont, after noon today.

GREENWOOD Deloris Mars Thompson, 58, of 102 Morgan Ave., wife of John G. Thompson Sr., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Greenwood at the home of a sister.
born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late J.D. and Fannie Southerland Mars. She graduated from Greenwood High School and the Greenwood College of Commerce and was employed as an accounting clerk by Wal-Mart. She was a member of New Market Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Gordon Thompson of Greenwood; a sister, Mary M. Norman of Greenwood; and three grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3:30 Friday at Blyth Funeral Home by the Rev. Randy Hardy. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are James Moore, Charlton Moore, Grady Reynolds, Gene Norman, Tony Norman, Chris Reynolds, Chris Farnacci, Roy Lee Martin, John Lagrone and Bill Martin.
Honorary escorts are associates of Wal-Mart, along with Willene Turner and Virginia Middleton.

Tommy Boyd, Jr.
GREENWOOD - Thomas Murrell "Tommy" Boyd, Jr., 40, resident of 221 Shrine Club Road, husband of Dorothy Marie Cook Boyd, died November 4, 2001 at his home.
born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Thomas "Butch" Boyd, Sr. and George Frances Gable. He was a carpenter.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are his father of Greenwood; mother of Abbeville; son, Kenneth Lee Boyd of Greenwood; stepson, John "Scooter" Mobley and granddaughter, Amanda Brooke Mobley, both of Abbeville; two sisters, Debra Hughes Batson and Toby Griffin, both of Abbeville and a brother, Perry Pinson of Hodges.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at 3 PM from the chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Tye Sorrow officiating. Burial will follow in Bethia cemetery.
The family is at the home on Shrine Club Road in Greenwood and at the home of his mother, 100 Huff Street in Abbeville and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 9 PM Tuesday.

HODGES Arthur Thomas McMelon, 77, of 921 Townsend Road E., widower of Mary Edna Craft McMelon, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at University Hospital in Augusta.
born in Chester, he was a son of the late William Thomas and Lily Althea Bradberry McMelon. He retired as a truck driver from Wometco and was a World War II Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Althea Goldman of Hodges and Mary Burton of Walhalla; a sister, Margaret Timms of Abbeville; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a step-great-granddaughter.
Services will be conducted at 3 Wednesday at Harley Funeral Home by the Rev. Nena Reynolds. Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Pallbearers are friends of the family.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Althea Goldman, 1112 New Zion Road.
