SANFORD, NC - Peggy Whitaker Cole, 67, of 2877 Cox Mill Road, died at her residence on Monday, November 12, 2001.
born in Moore County, NC, daughter of the late Elmer Floyd Whitaker and Katie Yow Whitaker, she was preceded in death by her husband, General F. Cole. She was the former owner and operator of Peggy's Style-O-Rama and Cole Pottery in Greenwood, SC
Survivors include two sons, Don F. Cole of Sanford, NC, and Rev. Ray Cole and wife, Ethel, of Seneca, SC; a brother, Ray Whitaker of Whiteland, IN; and three grandchildren, Cami Cole, Brandon Cole, and Summer Collins.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at 2:00 PM at Calvary United Pentecostal Church, with Rev. Dennis Patterson and Rev. Steve Simpson officiating. Burial will follow at Center United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family received friends at the funeral home 7 to 9 PM Tuesday, November 13, 2001.

Mary P. Wilson
MAULDIN — Mary Parthemos Wilson, 83, of 102 Drury Lane, wife of Morgan T. Wilson, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Steve and Katherine Arros Parthemos. She was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church of Mauldin and a retired employee of Kemet Corp.
Survivors include her husband of the home; and three brothers, Nick Parthemos and Gus Parthemos, both of Mauldin and Jim Parthemos of Richmond, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 Friday at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville, by the Rev. Bob Ravencraft. Burial is in Melrose cemetery, Abbeville. Visitation is from 1-2 Friday at the funeral home.

Dr. Jim McQuown, medical leader, dies
GREENWOOD — Dr. James Allan “Jim” McQuown, a highly honored local and state medical leader who practiced in Greenwood for 43 years, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Wesley Commons where he resided.
He was the husband of Peggy Ann Simmons McQuown.
born in Minnesota, he was a son of the late Carleton Reed and Neva Barnes McQuown. He was a 1940 graduate of Decatur Boys High in Georgia; a 1943 graduate of Emory University and in 1946 he completed the University of Georgia School of Medicine. He served his internship and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and Roper Hospital from 1949-1952.
He formed the Western Carolina Orthopaedic Association and was associated with Self Memorial Hospital before retiring in 1995. He continued to serve as a consultant with Whitten Center in Clinton and as attending physician for the state regional center for S.C. Department of Disabilities and Special Needs for 30 years.
Dr. McQuown was a member of the state Medical Association; the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; Southern Medical Society and Southern Orthopaedic Association; Southern Medical Association; was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and had served as president of the S.C. Orthopaedic Association and as a diplomat on the American Board of Orthopaedics.
He was a charter member of the Piedmont Multi-County Board of Mental Retardation for 22 years, serving as chairman for two years. He served on a Greenwood County committee which was instrumental in converting the Afro-American Hospital personnel residency into a boarding home for better housing for elderly black persons. He was a state board member of the Crippled Children’s Society and was active in the work of crippled children. He served as president of the Greenwood Easter Seals Society for eight years and began and operated the first local cerebral palsy clinic in 1953, lasting until the state clinics took over, at which time he operated the state crippled children’s clinic for Greenwood County.
Dr. McQuown was honored with the National Foundation Award for Recognition of Service devoted to children with polio, birth defects and arthritis. He received special training at New York University to set up special state clinics to improve the care of amputees.
Dr. McQuown served on the board of the Greenwood Methodist Home, now Wesley Commons, from 1969-78. He was a member of the Greenwood Rotary Club and was recipient of the 1968 “Young Man of the Year” award presented by the Greenwood Jaycees and the 1978 “Service to Mankind Award” presented by the Emerald Sertoma Club. He was a member for eight years, serving as president for two years, of the Greenwood Human Relations Organization.
Dr. McQuown was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a medical officer in the 11th Airborne in Japan and Korea. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and elder and taught Sunday School for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Dr. J. Allan McQuown of Hodges and John Mark McQuown of Greenwood; six daughters, Dr. Sherry M. Yanney of Charleston, Neva Lynn Peagler and Peggy Ann M. Gramling, both of Moncks Corner, Kathleen Spivey McQuown of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Mary Margaret M. Jackson of Greenwood and Suzanna M. Johnston of Hilton Head; a sister, Mary Wynne of Decatur; and 20 grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. John Wall and Rev. John Livingston. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Steven G. Gramling, William W. Peagler, James M. Yanney, Robert Jackson, Clyde Johnston and Hayes Yanney.
Honorary escorts are elders and deacons of First Presbyterian Church and the medical staff of Self Regional Healthcare; along with Sammy L. Drennon, Frank Morgan Sr., Hardy Higgins, Heyward Higgins, Fred Y. Norton, Thomas Hollis and Clarence Lyles.
Visitation is from 5:30-9 at Harley Funeral Home.

NINETY SIX — Mark Anthony Hailey, 41, husband of Loretta Watts Hailey, of 415 Booker Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001.
born in Greenwood, he was the son of Shirley Davis Hailey and the late Willie James Hailey. He was an employee of Greenwood Mills, and a member and trustee at Enoree Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother; a son, Mark Anthony Hailey Jr. of the home; two daughters, Camille Katrina Hailey of the home, Shaquella Sanders of Ninety Six; and a sister, Mattie Yvonne Hailey Brown of Ninety Six.
The family is at the home, and also at the home of his mother, at 103 Davis Drive in Ninety Six.

SILVERSTREET — Lessie Mae Maynard, 81, of 1794 Mudlick Road, widow of Rev. William Maynard, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at her home.
born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Brown and the late Lillie Williams Brown.
She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Cross Hill, and a former member of Holy United Baptist Church in Corona, N.Y.
Survivors include a niece, Rose Mary Pitts of Silverstreet; a nephew, Tyrone Pitts of Silverstreet; two great-nephews and two great nieces.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Cross Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LAURENS — James G. Carr Jr., 61, of 107 Primrose Lane, husband of Jessie Stephens Carr, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Anna Marie Nursing & Rehabilitation in North Augusta, S.C.
born in Vaucluse, S.C., he was a son of the late James G. Carr Sr., and Emmie Elizabeth Green Carr. He was retired from Graniteville Company, CMI Inc., and Lowery Mechanical. He was a member of Breezy Hill Baptist Church in Graniteville, American Legion Post 63, VFW Post 3200, Masonic Lodge 156, and E. Porter Alexander Camp 158 SCV, all in Augusta; and a charter member of Samuel McGowan Camp 40, SCV in Laurens. An Army veteran, he also served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Gary L. Carr and James G. Carr III, both of Greenwood; two daughters, Pamela R. Deep of Johnson City, Tenn., and Kimberly D. Carr of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Tony L. Carr Sr. of North Augusta, and Kenneth R. Carr Sr. of Augusta; and three grandchildren.

GREENWOOD — Richard Leroy Edwards Sr., of 112 Lovely Lane, widower of Edna Holcombe Edwards, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.
born in Paragould, Ark., he was a son of the late James Riley and Nancy B. Edwards. He was the former owner of Montgomery Crawford Building Supply and a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Lions Club and Palmetto Golf Club, both in Aiken; Star Fort National Golf Club in Ninety Six, and Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dick Edwards of Greenwood, and Neville Edwards of Saluda; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Friday at Harley Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Larry Jenkins. Burial will be in Aiken Memorial Park.

Eugene Goodwyn Jr.
SENECA — Eugene Rogers Goodwyn Jr., 92, of 401 Mountainview Drive, widower of Mary Opal Robinson Goodwyn, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Eugene R. and Susan Catherine Hill Goodwyn. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and the New York School of Social Work. He was employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, serving as warden of institutions in Tallahassee, Fla., Petersburg, Va., Texarkana, Texas, and was associate warden at the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta for 20 years. He was a member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Memphis.
Survivors include a son, Eugene R. Goodwyn III, of Seneca; two sisters, Susan Hill Rayburn of Charlotte, and Julie Owen of Greenwood.
Graveside services are Saturday at 2:30 at Magnolia cemetery in Greenwood.

born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late James and Martha B. Battle. She was a “Mother of the Church” at Mount Olive Baptist Church, a member of the Willing Worker Club and the Pastor’s Aide Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Hill, Loraine Tillman, and the Rev. Deborah Chiles, all of Abbeville; two sons, Alfred Haddon Jr. and George Haddon, both of the home; a brother, R. Ree Battle of Philadelphia, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Vera C. Dean
GRIFFIN, GA. — Vera C. Dean, 97, of 1250 Teamon Road, widow of Commander Thomas Irvine Dean, USNR, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at her home.
She was a daughter of the late William and Mollie Addis Cole. She was a graduate of Lander College and a former teacher in Oconee County. She was retired from First Baptist Church in Charleston, where she served in the Sunday School Department, Youth Department and Women’s Missions Union. She was a former member of Sunnyside Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, both in Griffin. She was the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Baptist Association, a member of the Eastern Star in Charleston, where she served as Past Worthy Matron, and a member of the Daughters of the Nile, and the King’s Daughters.
Survivors include a son, Tom Dean Jr. of Griffin; a daughter, Virginia G. Horres of Charleston; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services are at 2:30 Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Charleston, conducted by Dr. John A. Hamrick and the Rev. Marshall Blalock.
