BOILING SPRINGS – Alice Stanford Johnson Martin, 81, of 320 Vineyard Road, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of O’Neal Martin and was first married
to the late J.B. Johnson. She was the daughter of the late Will Stanford and the late Bertha Griffin Stanford. She was a homemaker and member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Wilson of Boiling Springs; a sister, Ila Mabry of Spartanburg; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Johnny, Ben and Miles Stanford; and two sisters, Lucille Johnson and Lola Tate.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Rutledge. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Charlie Wilson
Retired from AT&T
Charles (Charlie) Winston Wilson, 84, of 221 Mill St., died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Tuskegee, Ala., he was the husband of Elizabeth (Lib) Branom Wilson and son of the late John Harvey Wilson and the late Ocie Mae Waters Wilson. He was retired from AT&T and was a member of East Gaffney Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Charles T. Wilson, Douglas E. Wilson, both of Gaffney, Gary M. Wilson of Chesnee and Stanley M. Wilson of Simi Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Murel Pope of Montgomery, Ala., and Betty Jean Huff of Birmingham, Ala.; three brothers, John Harvey Wilson, Thomas Earl Wilson and James K. Wilson, all of Montgomery, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frank Swearington, and a brother, Edward H. Wilson.
The family is at the home of a son, Douglas E. Wilson, 512 S. Limestone St.

Michael K. Shippy
Student at Spartanburg Tech
Michael Kenneth Shippy, 19, of 508 Hetty Hill St., died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in Greenville Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of Michael L. Shippy and Brenda Scruggs Shippy of the home. He was a member of Glory to Glory Church in Gaffney and a student at Spartanburg Technical College.
Also surviving is a brother, Louis Mansel Curtis of the home.

Curtis Edward Mathis
GREENWOOD — Curtis “Curt” Edward Mathis, 45, of 101 Myrtle St., Magnolia Place, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Ada Phillips Mathis and the late Curtis Lee Mathis. He was an employee of Kahn Construction Co. and a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. He was formerly married
to Julie Brown Mathis.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Jennings Mathis; his mother of the home; a daughter, Chenequa Mathis of Greenwood; four sisters, Dorothy Daniels of Columbia, Mrs. Howard (Hassie) Scurry and Mrs. Timothy (Lucile) Sweeney, both of Mauldin and Gussie Norman of Greenwood; and a grandson.
Services will be conducted at 3 Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church by the Bishop Emanuel Spearman, assisted by the Rev. John R. Brightharp, pastor, and the Rev. William Booker. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Flower bearers are cousins and friends of the family.
Honorary escorts are employees of Kahn Construction Co.
Visitation is from 7-8 Friday at the home.

Helen Monroe
GREENWOOD — Helen DeVoss Monroe, 70, of 112 Sparrow Road, wife of John B. Monroe, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at her home.
born in Milford Center, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth DeVoss. She attended the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in education. She was an elementary teacher, a library aide and a tutor for children with learning disabilities. After retirement, she continued volunteering as a tutor and was a volunteer at Wooster Community Hospital. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wooster, where she served as a deacon and an elder, being elected to that position first as a student at the college. She sang in the Wooster Choral Union for many years, and since moving to Greenwood in 2000, was a member of the Greenwood Festival Chorale and the First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Martha Monroe of Gainesville, Fla.; a son, Jonathan Monroe of Harrisonburg, Va.; a sister, Lou Ann Mitchell of DeWitt, Mich.; a brother, John DeVoss of Great Falls, Mont.; and two granddaughters.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. John Wall.

Margie Rains
GREENWOOD — Margie Inez Owens Rains, 76, of 405 E. Durst Ave., wife of William Osborne “Bill” Rains, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at her home.
born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late I.V. and Louise ZettyGray Owens. She was a homemaker and a founder of Greenwood Faith Chapel.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, James Marvin “Jimmy” Rains of Greenwood; five daughters, Norma R. Whitmire, Patricia R. Havird and Brenda R. Pate, all of Greenwood, Nancy Newman of Simpsonville and Betty Bouchillonof Williamston; three sisters, Lena Scarborough, Dottie Lee and Lucille Jenkins, all of Anderson; five brothers, Charles Owens of Monroe, N.C., Coy Owens and Larry Owens, both of Anderson, Donald Owens of Townville and Roger Owens of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 Friday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. John Turner.
Visitation is at Harley Funeral Home from 12-1:30 Friday.

Gertrude Abercrombie
GREENWOOD — Gertrude Agnes Steen Abercrombie, 77, of 100 Madison St., widow of John Casey Abercrombie, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare Center.
born in Chester, she was a daughter of the late George Fred and Martha Hope Howell Steen. She was retired from Greenwood Mills-Harris Plant and was a member of the Greenwood Mills Quarter Century Club. She was a member of Harris Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services are at 3:30 today at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J.B. Abercrombie and the Rev. Frank Thomas. Entombment is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Visitation is from 2:30-3:30 today at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter-in-law, Elaine Abercrombie, 406 Lake Forest Road.

John R. Beatty Sr.
DUE WEST — John Robert Beatty Sr., 68, of 8 Brannon Circle, husband of Elizabeth Adams Beatty, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at his home.
born in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Herman and Marie Lego Beatty. He was a retired Interstate Driver with the Teamsters Union. He was a member of Due West Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a son, John Robert Beatty Jr. of Hawaii; a brother, Chester Beatty of Maryland; three sisters, Elsie Blaher of Maryland, Patricia Holston of Georgia and Rosalyn Trice of Belton and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Due West Baptist Church, Due West, S.C.

HODGES — Elizabeth Davis Jackson, 79, of 4113 Moorefield St., died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at National Health Care of Greenwood.

Narcissus Payton
SUMMERVILLE — Narcissus Ann McCrickard Payton, 90, of Summerville and formerly of Anderson, widow of Robert Lee Payton, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Hallmark Health Care Center in Summerville.
born in Attalla, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Henry Wood and Rhoda Catherine Milligan McCrickard. She was retired from Anderson Mills. She was a member of the West Whitner Baptist Church in Anderson.
Survivors include three sons, Doug Payton of Anderson, Jerry Payton of Warner Robbins, Ga. and William “Billy” Payton of Ninety Six; a daughter, Catherine Payton of Summerville; a sister, Virginia Hardeman of McCormick; thirteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are at 12 Monday at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Durham. The body will be placed on the grave at 10:30.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the Harley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Willie Mae B. Robinson
GREENWOOD — Mrs. Willie Mae (Billye) Robinson, 92, widow of Mr. James Henry Robinson, of 908 E. Cambridge Avenue, owner of Robinson & Son Mortuary, Inc., died Saturday, November 24, 2001, after an extended illness at her home.
She was born in Greenville, S.C. She was the daughter of the late James and Bertha Baskin. She was a dedicated member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served as a former trustee, former President of United Methodist Women and a former choir member.
Mrs. J.H. was also a former member of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, South Carolina Morticians Association, Yellow Jasmine Garden Club, Harmony Lodge #282 Order of the Eastern Star, RBH Modernistic Bridge Club, and the Daughters of Isis #184.
Surviving are a son, Donald E. (Jean) Robinson of Greenwood, 3 granddaughters, Michelle Robinson Herring of Greenwood, Donna Robinson Jones of Atlanta, Ga., and Sabrina Robinson Pollock of Pineville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Courtney, Ebony, Miles, and Savannah; a devoted friend/caregiver, Phyllis C. Hackett of Greenwood; a devoted friend, Wally White of Greenwood; a goddaughter, Marcella Sheldon of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; a devoted staff: Johnny Crosby, Douglas Lindsay, Eugene Day, William T. Lee, Gwen Gray, Robert Dean, James L. Day, James Waldrop, Willie Lindsey, Marcellus Lee, Luella Crosby and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 26, 2001, at Trinity United Methodist Church from 7-8 p.m. The body will lie in state on Tuesday, November 27 until the hour of service at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be the staff of Robinson & Son Mortuary.
Honorary escorts will be Morticians, Ministers, United Methodist Women and Roy Parks Jr.
The family requests omission of flowers and donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 528 Maxwell Avenue, Greenwood SC 29646.
The family will be at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Robinson, 105 Empire Circle, Greenwood.
