‘Jack’ Pace
HODGES — Joseph “Jack” DeWayne Pace, 53, son of Carlton and Beatrice Taylor Pace, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga.
A security guard with Peachtree Security, he was a staff sergeant in the Air Force and a veteran of the Vietnam conflict. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his parents of Hodges; two daughters, Christina P. Snow of New Hampshire and Stephanie Merrick of Atkinson, N.H.; a brother, Gary Pace of California; three sisters, Diane Gaiero of Massachusetts, Glenda Gieder of Florida and Janice Wiles of Easley; a grandchild; and paternal grandmother, Mattie Pace of Belton.
Services will be conducted at 4 today at Parker-White Funeral Home by the Revs. Andrew Webb and Joe Chapman. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 2:30-3:30 today at the funeral home.

Minnie Palmer
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Minnie Belle Parkman Palmer, 75, resident of 1029 Glen Echo Road, wife of Thomas Andrew "Andy" Palmer, passed away October 6, 2001 at her residence after an extended illness.
She was born in Saluda, February 25, 1926, and was a long time resident of Jacksonville. She was a daughter of the late Clarence and Clara Watson Parkman. She was a 1943 graduate of Greenwood High School, a homemaker and an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, FL.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 53 years; a son, Thomas A. Palmer, Jr. of Parchman, MS; three daughters, June Palmer of Greenville, Janice Taylor of Dacusville, SC and Kathy Wilsie of Jacksonville, FL; a brother, Calvin Parkman of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Laura and Jeremy Matthews, Joni Taylor, and Palmer Wilsie.
She was predeceased in death by her daughter, Donna Matthews and a sister, Evelyn Watkins.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 AM Thursday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens with Rev. Robert Piephoff officiating.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening.

William ‘Bill’ Baldwin
CROSS HILL — William “Bill” Baldwin, 75, of 844 Amberhill Circle, husband of Ethel Billings Baldwin, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
born in Union County, he was a son of the late William Pinkney and Florence Sprouse Baldwin. He retired from Kohler Co., Spartanburg and was a member of First Baptist Church of Cross Hill and the oldest member of Duncan Masonic Lodge 256.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, William Roger Baldwin of Lake Charles, La., and Lanny Ted Baldwin of Cross Hill; and a brother, Floyd Baldwin of Columbia.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gray Funeral Home, Clinton, with burial in Mount Lebanon Baptist Church cemetery, Union.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

AUGUSTA — Joe Louis Butler, 62, of 2930 Richmond Hill Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his home.
born in Saluda County, S.C., he was a son of the late Raymond and Martha Smith Butler. He was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Saluda, and a retired health technician for Richmond County Board of Education.
Survivors include his wife, Lonzie Bell Butler of Saluda; four sons, Cleo Robinson, Jerry Butler and Sammy Butler, all of Saluda and George Butler of Augusta; a daughter, Doris B. Toure of Camden, N.J.; two brothers, Raymond Butler Jr. of Los Angeles and David Butler of Saluda; four sisters, Edie Mae Buckett, Betty Wells, Nellie Christie and Catherine Farrow, all of Saluda; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be conducted at 1 Saturday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Saluda, by the Rev. Larry Bookman. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers are nephews, and flower bearers are nieces.

GREENWOOD - Lois Putnam Sweezy, 90, of 106 Woods Terrace, Augusta Fields, widow of Walter Alexander Sweezy, died Thursday, October 11, 2001 at National HealthCare of Clinton.
born in Ninety Six, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Bessie Sligh Putnam. She retired in 1973 from Greenwood Mills, Durst Plant, and was a member of South Greenwood Church of God for more than 60 years, where she taught in the Children's Sunday School Department and helped to organize the Youth Department.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mignon Ellenburg.
Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy S. and Michael Inman of Greenwood; a sister and brother-in-law, Dot and Harold Boyd; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Mary Putnam; brother, Alvin Putnam; and a sister-in-law, Ginny Putnam, all of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Charman Inman, Rodney Ellenburg, and Jennifer Ellenburg, all of Greenwood and Shana McLeod of Charleston; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Showalter and Cody Fleming, both of Greenwood.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Doolittle, the Rev. Milton Hannah, and Mrs. Sara Garland officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Charles Putnam, Johnny Ellenburg, Ed Day, T.J. Collins, Robert Fisher, Jack Horne, Horace Files, and Dickie Cathcart.

GREENWOOD — Edwin Romain Cobb, 85, of 215-B Grace St., formerly of Anderson, husband of Bobbie Elrod Cobb, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Central, he was a son of the late John and Cora Vollrath Cobb. He retired from the S.C. National Guard in Anderson and was a Mason. He was a member of the Lions Club and Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church, Anderson, where he taught the Men’s Bible Class and formerly served on the Administrative Board.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Douglas Cobb of Alpharetta, Ga., and Michael Cobb of Lawrenceville, N.J.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 Sunday at Oakbrook Memorial Park by the Rev. Charles Brown.
Visitation is Sunday from 2-3 at Oakbrook Memorial Park Lakeview Mausoleum.

WARE SHOALS — Patsy Jean Bartlett Hamby, 51, of 5 W. Cork St., died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. born in Herndon, Va., she was a daughter of Dorothy Thompson Romine and the late Otis Garland Bartlett.
Survivors include her mother of San Bernardino, Calif.; a son, Michael Hamby of San Bernardino; two brothers, Otis G. “Butch” Bartlett Jr. of Blaine, Wash., and David Allen Bartlett of Fendale, Wash.; and four sisters, Jane Holland of Columbia, Judy Rose Koon of Ware Shoals, Barbara Ann Baird of Washington and Sally Romine of San Bernardino.

born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of Kenneth B. “Pete” Underwood and the late Billie Cobb Underwood. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School.

Carole B. Sumerel
LAURENS — Frances Carole Burns Sumerel, 57, of 903 N. Harper St., wife of David Robert “Bob” Sumerel, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
born in Laurens, she was a daughter of William D. “Dub” and Frances Leopard “Frankie” Burns Sr. She graduated from Coker College and retired as a first grade teacher at Ford School, serving for 31 years. A member of First Baptist Church for 44 years, she was a member of the Lurlene Steele Sunday School Class, taught the Lurlene Steele and Helen Shelley Sunday School classes and taught the Olive Lawton Sunday School Class at Martha Franks. She worked with Mission Friends for 20 years, serving as director, and was a member of the Leadership Team of Laurens Baptist W.M.U. Association and the Lucia Barksdale Circle of the W.M.U. She volunteered with the Laurens County Crisis Center and Spanish speaking class, the Safe Home and Piedmont Wilderness Institute and served on the tape ministry to the homebound.
She was a member and life recording secretary of the Laureate Xi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and was a member of Beta Chapter of Laurens County Retired Teachers Association, the Fidelis Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa National Honorary Teachers Sorority and the Christian Women’s Club. She was also a member and secretary of the Ann Pamela Cunningham Garden Club.
Survivors include her husband of the home; her parents of Laurens; and two brothers, W.D. “Bill” Burns Jr. of Laurens and Robert F. “Robbie” Burns of Raleigh, N.C.
Services will be conducted at 2 Sunday at Laurens First Baptist Church by Dr. Bev T. Kennedy Jr. and the Rev. Charlie Short. Burial is in Forest Lawn cemetery.

PELION — Daniel Hays Watson Sr., 71, husband of Mary Arlene McCullough Watson, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001.
born in Clinton, he was a son of the late William Pierce and Lillie Burnett Watson. Formerly of Aiken, he had lived in the Midlands since 1959 and retired from Sunbeam Appliance Co. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Pelion, the Aiken “Jaycees” and the Carolina Players at USC. He was a Boy Scout leader, a Men’s Sunday School teacher and a licensed private pilot.
Survivors include his wife of Pelion; a daughter, Amanda Smith of Charleston; a son, Dan Watson of West Columbia; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington, by the Rev. Frank Mims.
