born in Greenwood, he was a son of Lester Wilson Ashley and Victoria Shirley Draper. He was a former employee of Daniel Construction Co. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Surviving in addition to his father of Ware Shoals and his mother of Greenville are a daughter, Summer Ashley of Anderson; a brother, Robert Chris Ashley of Honea Path and a grandfather, Adger Shirley of Hodges.
Services are at 3 Monday at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rod Carver and the Rev. Jerry Blassingame. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home.

Willie Banes
GREENWOOD — Willie Raymond Banes, 84, of 417 Stevens St., husband of Blanche Pauline Esco Banes, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Willie Edgar and Nealie Elizabeth Seymour Banes. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Greenwood Mills Mathews Plant and from the 111th Signal Company of the South Carolina National Guard. He was a member of West Side Baptist Church and the Adult I Mens’ Sunday School Class.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Peggy B. Boyd of the home; a brother, Olando Leroy Banes of Greenwood; a sister, Thelma E. Banes of Greenwood; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Monday at the Blyth Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hal Lane. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Honorary escorts are members of the Adult I Mens’ Sunday School Class and the Evelyn Ford Sunday School Class, both of West Side Baptist Church and retired members of the South Carolina National Guard.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Howard Eugene Bumgardner, 47, of 1817 Davis Park Road, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at his home.
born in Gastonia, he was a son of Kathryn Picklesimer Bumgardner Owens and the late Howard W. Bumgardner. He was self-employed and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Laurens are two brothers, Donald R. Bumgardner of Laurens and Patrick “Nicky” Bumgardner of Ware Shoals and two sisters, Joanna Bass of Rock Hill and Christie Newman of Columbia.
Graveside services are at 4 Monday at Bethlehem Union Church cemetery in Waterloo, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Davis.

NINETY SIX — Bessie Mae Childs, 85, of 106 Childs St., died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Doc Childs and Eva Tolben Childs of Ninety Six. She was retired from the Ninety Six School District. She was a member of Enoree Zion Baptist Church, where she participated in the Senior Choir. She was also a member of Sallie White Brown Chapter 26.
Survivors include a son, Elliott Richardson of Ninety Six; a sister, Hattie C. Stevens of Ninety Six and a grandson.
The family is at the home and at the home of his son, Elliott Richardson, 104 Panther Drive.

born in Huntsville, Ala., he was a son of Charlee Pickett Marshall. He was a former forge technician for Mason Chamberlain Inc. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Greenwood are a stepfather, William Marshall of Greenwood; a daughter, Jessica Newby of Picayune; two stepbrothers, Michael Marshall of Greenville and Matthew Marshall of Picayune; two sisters, Kathleen Lea of Crystal Springs, Miss. and Kimberly Pecou of Harvest, Ala. and a grandchild.

Mary Frances Bishop
Mary Frances Bishop, age 90, formerly of Ware Shoals passed away peacefully on October 6, 2001, at the home of her daughter Joye Teachman in Huntington Beach, CA. She was the daughter of the late Genevieve Blackwell Davis and Claude Wesley Davis of Ware Shoals. Frances was preceded in death by her children Joseph Bishop and Nancy Bishop, and a granddaughter, Tracey Teachman. She is survived by her four daughters: Dorothy Griffard, Thousand Oaks, CA; Harriette Rasmussen, Spring, TX; Jeny McCullough, Sherborn, MA; Joye Teachman, Huntington Beach, CA; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Her surviving sisters are Bernice Ezell, Greenwood, SC; and Molly Bagwell, Greenville, SC. A surviving brother, Barney Davis, Deltona Beach, Fl.
Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 20, 2001 at South Main Street Baptist Church, Greenwood, SC, conducted by the Rev. Dan Compton. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held immediately following the services at the home of Joan, Jeny Marie and Joseph Bishop; 309 Marietta Drive, Greenwood, SC.

GREENWOOD — Marion Alvin Brown, 81, of 3310 Highway 25 S., husband of Helen Faye Brooks Brown, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Hart County, Ga., he was a son of the late William Tapley and Della Crocker Brown. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where he was an elder.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Dewey “Dell Ree” B. Nation of Greenwood; two brothers, William T. Brown Jr. of Clinton, Tenn., and Donald Brown of Alvin, Texas; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
