R.E. Hawthorne
DONALDS — R.E. Hawthorne, 73, of 427 Mt. Lebanon Road, widower of Martha Jackson Hawthorne, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Abbeville Memorial Hospital.
born in Due West, he was a son of the late Calvin and Delia Joseph Hawthorne. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon AME Church, where he was a member of the Steward Board and had served as a member of the Senior Choir, the Voices and the Male Chorus. He was a brick mason, last working with Simmons & Ware Construction Co. He was a Korean War Army veteran.
Survivors include three sons, Rodney Hawthorne of Due West, Lurman Hawthorne of Greenwood and Darrell Hawthorne of Donalds; a brother, Ollie Hawthorne of Far Rockaway, N.Y. and two sisters, Nettie Martin of Greenville and Minnie Hawthorne of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Services are at 2 Tuesday at Mt. Lebanon AME Church, conducted by the Revs. Larry Nelson, James Kay, Jerome Nance and Porter Stackhouse. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Abbeville. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Visitation is from 1:15-2 Tuesday at Mt. Lebanon AME Church.
Pallbearers are nephews and friends of the family.
Flower bearers are the Stewardess of the church and friends of the family. The family is at the home.

Blanche Robertson
SALUDA — Blanche Yarbrough Able Robertson, 70, of Vero Beach, Fla. and Saluda, wife of David L. Robertson, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Florida.
born in Augusta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Horace and Blanche Scurry Yarbrough. She was a teacher at Saluda High School for 30 years before retiring. She was a member of the Vero Beach Garden Club, the American Association of University Women and the Creative Writers Group. She was a Lay Speaker, Council Member and Member of First United Methodist Church in Vero Beach.
Surviving in addition to her husband of Vero Beach are two sons, William Carlos Able of Nashville, Tenn. and Clement Keith Able of Beaufort; two daughters, Harriet Able Boone of Hillsborough, N.C. and Karren Able Gledhill of Charlotter, N.C.; a stepson, Dave Robertson of Myrtle Beach; a stepdaughter, Lisa Cushman of Myrtle Beach and 13 grandchildren.
Services are at 12:30 Tuesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Saluda. Burial is in Butler United Methodist Church cemetery.
Visitation is from 11-12 Tuesday at Ramey Funeral Home.

Horace Waddell Jr.
ABBEVILLE — Horace Fred Waddell Jr., 78, of 503 Sunset Drive, husband of Dorothy Moore Waddell, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Horace Fred Waddell Sr. and Eva Compton Waddell. He was a graduate of Laurens High School and attended Clemson College. He taught in the Vocational Education Department of Laurens and Abbeville County Schools for forty years. After retirement, he worked with the USDA as a livestock grader. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member and former President of the Lions Club of Abbeville, Foothills, Emerald and Piedmont Seniors Golf Association and Southern Squares Square Dance Group. He was a former director of High Meadows Golf Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, where he had served as deacon and was a member of the Bible Study Class.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey (Jolee Waddell) Beaver of Abbeville and three sisters, Miriam Waddell of Washington D.C., Betty W. Blalock of Wilson, N.C. and Carolyn W. Cook of Laurens.
Services are at 2 Monday at the First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Reiny Koschel and the Rev. Wayne Wiggins. Burial is in Long Cane cemetery.
Pallbearers are LeRoy Culbertson, Sam Gilliam, Ron Hilley, Buzz Sawyer, Gene Copeland, Al Choiniere and Buck Ashley.
Honorary escorts are The Bible Class of the First Baptist Church and the Lions Club.

JOHNSTON — Danny Minick, 37, of 643-A Ridge Road, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at University Hospital in Augusta.
born in Saluda County, he was a son of Laura Mathis Minick and the late Curtis Minick Sr. He was a member of Mine Creek Baptist Church, a 1984 Saluda High School graduate and an employee of Hardware Industrial, Batesburg.
Survivors include his mother of Johnston; a son, Joshua Harris of Batesburg; two brothers, Curtis Minick Jr. of Johnston and Carson Minick of Saluda; four sisters, Doris Minick, Mary J. Mathis, Brenda Herrin and Betty J. Dobbs, all of Johnston; and maternal grandmother, Mary Mathis of Johnston.
Services will be conducted at 3 Saturday at Rock Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. R.C. Holloway. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Donald Minick
GREENWOOD — Donald Earl Minick, 60, of 3811 Highway 72 East, husband of Betty Ann “Becky” Sumerel Minick, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late George Earl and Loreen Smith Minick. The owner of Minick’s Painting & Cleaning, he served in the S.C. National Guard for seven years and was a member of New Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Tony Earl Minick and George Gregory Minick, both of Greenwood; two sisters, Candace Attaway and Becky Dodgen, both of Greenwood; and four grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 Friday at Harley Funeral Home by the Revs. Phillip Morris and Tim Ellenberg. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are Wayne Sumerel, Jimmy Alexander, Ray Dodgen, Robert Attaway, Earl Sumerel, Mike Sumerel and Aaron Dorn.

GREENWOOD — Charles William “Bill” Wincey Jr., 77, of 3959 Fish Hatchery Road, Gaston, formerly of Greenwood, husband of Teresa Watkins Wincey, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.
born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Charles William Wincey Sr. and Belle Knoff Wincey. He retired as a security guard from Greenwood Packing Plant and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Greenwood Wesleyan Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Pat Kimbrell of Easley, Betty Stacey of Chesnee and Vickie Prawdzik of Augusta, Ga.; a son, Ted Wincey of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 4 Friday at Harley Funeral Home by the Rev. Jonathan Payne and Mr. Mac McLellan. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

WARD — Isabell Padget Winn, 86, of 125 Neighbors Road, widow of Arzell Winn, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at the Medical College of Georgia.
born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late J.A. and Geneva Bodie Padget. She retired as a seamstress with Saluda Shirt Plant and was a member of Ward Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Rae P. Ridlehoover of Saluda; and a brother, Heber N. Padget of Gainesville, Ga.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Ward Baptist Church by the Revs. Randall Baker and Francis Miller. Burial is in Spann United Methodist Church cemetery.

WHITMIRE — Cora E. Gilliam, 96, formerly of 1435 Church St., widow of Henry W. Gilliam, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home, Newberry.
born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late James William and Laura Jane Robinette Hurd. She retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Darrell Wayland Gilliam Sr., of Whitmire; five daughters, Thelma G. Cole and Laura Ethel G. Griffin, both of Ninety Six, Dorothy G. Puckett and Elsie G. Osborne, both of Whitmire and Celestene G. Privette of Simpsonville; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 Saturday at Gray Funeral Home, Whitmire, with burial in Whitmire cemetery.

Leonard Miller
GREENWOOD — Leonard Hanmer Miller, 81, of 109 Greenbriar Road, husband of Carolyn Osteen Miller, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at Richard M. Campbell Veteran’s Nursing Home in Anderson.
born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Leonard Passman and Helen Hanmer Miller. He received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., a master’s degree in taxes from DePaul University, Chicago, and a certified public accountant degree from the University of Illinois. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, obtaining the rank of first lieutenant, and was a retired, self-employed CPA and financial planner. Formerly of Des Plaines, Ill., he had lived in Greenwood since 1994 and was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 20 in Greenwood. He was also a member the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, past president of the Portville, N.Y., Kiwanis Club, a Mason and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (LaDonna) Bruen Lloyd of Greenwood and Lisa Osteen Miller of Limerick, Pa.; a foster daughter, Cordelia V. Forshee of Dallas; and a foster grandson.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3 Sunday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church by Pastor Kim Eanes.

PRINCETON — James Alexander Scott Jr., 89, of 305 Scott Road, husband of Mary Lois Thompson Scott, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at his home.
born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late James A. Scott Sr. and Maetta McCuen Scott. He was a member and deacon of Princeton Baptist Church, where he was choir director for more than 30 years. He attended Clemson College and was a retired farmer and textile manager with Riegel Textile Co. He was Past Master of Princeton Lodge 129 A.F.M., where he was a member for more than 66 years.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, J.A. Scott III of Ware Place; a daughter, Linda Scott Meadors of Greenwood; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Princeton Baptist Church by the Revs. Bobby Hardin and Terry Wilson. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
