Montina Rikard
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Margaret Montina (Tina) Davis Rikard, 76, of 136 Pine St., Buffalo, widow of Marvin Boyd Rikard Sr., died at her home Saturday, April 19, 2003, at 8:45 a.m. Mrs. Rikard was born in Union County on June 14, 1926, a daughter of the late William and Frances West Davis. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mrs. Rikard was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was also retired from Oakmont Residential Care.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Buck Butler, III of Buffalo; a step-son, Marvin (Sonny) Rikard Jr., of Newberry; a step-daughter, Brenda Crocker of Spartanburg; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Valerie Crisp and Bessie Erwin, both of Buffalo, Hazel Lee Palmer and Reid Palmer, of Union; a brother and sisters-in-law, Leon and Edna Davis of Buffalo and Violet Davis of Greer; three grandchildren, Angie Rodney of Columbia, Jason Butler of Buffalo and Bucky Butler of Union; six great-grandchildren, Blair Rodney, Blake Butler, Jacob Butler, Molly Butler, Baylee Butler and Grant Butler; three step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rikard was predeceased by a brother, Elbert Davis. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Anderson and the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Jonathan Burnett, Bobby Davis, Richie Brown, Leon Davis, Jr., Carl Davis, John Mark Davis, Bo Nichlas and Jack Callahan Jr.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night. The family was at the home of her sister, Valerie Crisp, 145 Joe Eubanks Road, Buffalo. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mae H. Kitchens
Retired from I. From's

Flora Mae Hawkins Kitchens, 96, widow of Albert G. Kitchens Sr., formerly of the Monarch Community, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at 11:30 p.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Kitchens was born on August 18, 1907 in Weaverville, N.C., a daughter of the late W.W. Hawkins and Ora Davis Hawkins. She was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and the Ann Hinkle Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Kitchens was retired from I. From's Department Store and formerly worked with the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Child Care. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Albert G. (Dick) Kitchens Jr., and Barbara Belk Kitchens of Union; a daughter-in-law, Pat Kitchens of Buffalo; two sisters, Lee Bosco of Orlando, Fla., and Jean Lindquiest of Chicago, Ill., a brother, Harold Hawkins of Union; four grandchildren, Steve Kitchens, Glenn Kitchens, Beverly Gould and Lori Lowe; 10 great-grandchildren; and a special niece and nephew, Elizabeth Adams and Charles Hawkins Jr..

Mrs. Kitchens was predeceased by a son, William Earl Kitchens; a grandson, Joey Kitchens, three sisters, Lois Owenby, Grace Hawkins and Ruby Adkins, and two brothers, Oren W. Hawkins and Terry Hawkins. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and the Rev. Carroll Owenby. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The body will remain at the funeral home. The family is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Barbara Kitchens, 233 Woodhaven Drive, Union, and will receive friends at the cemetery Friday immediately following the committal services. Gary R. Roe
U.S. Navy veteran

Gary R. Roe, 47, of 122 Gregory St., formerly of Aurora, Ill., died at his home Tuesday, April 20, 2004, after a two-year battle with cancer. Mr. Roe was born in Aurora, Ill., Oct. 3, 1956, a son of Valeria Adams Roe of Montgomery, Ill., and the late R. Wayne Roe. He attended West Aurora High School and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a sister with whom he made his home, Karen Newton of Union; four brothers, Randy F. Roe of N. Aurora, Ill., David and wife Merry Roe of Oswego, Ill., Dale and wife Rhonda Roe of Round Rock, Texas, and Brian and wife Shannon Roe of California; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Mr. Roe is also survived by a daughter, Kelly.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Rudolph and Susie Adams and Frank and Eva Roe. Funeral arrangements are pending at Dalieden's Lake Street Mortuary in Aurora, Ill. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Thelma C. Bilby
New York native

Thelma Claudedia Bilby, 74, widow of Archie Bilby, of 1208 W. Main Street, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Bilby was born in Campbell, N.Y., on April 13, 1929, a daughter of the late Claude Ripley and Elizabeth Ripley Reasor. She was a Baptist and a retired home health care worker.

Surviving are: four daughters, Mary Wheaton of Tennessee, Diane Kerr of Elmira, N.Y., Louise Fowler of Seneca Falls, N.Y., and Kathy Vinson of Buffalo; three sons, Roger Webb of Coopers Plain, N.Y., Roy Webb Jr. and Jack Webb, both of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary Corey of Painted Post, N.Y.; a step-sister, Winnie Dickerman of Corning, N.Y.; her dear friend and roommate, Gracie Chalk, of the home; 34 grandchildren, three who whom were reared in the home, Tina Beaver Kicklighter of Beaumont, Texas, Kelly Beaver and Ken Beaver, both of Union and 66 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bilby was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Kay Justice, two sisters, Clara Phillips and Doris Black and two brothers, Al Ripley and Jim Ripley. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Gene Vinson, Mike Kick-lighter, Chris Gregory, Charles Henderson, Tracy Tucker and Winfield Atwell.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. The family is at the home, 1208 W. Main St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bill Harrison
Retired president & CEO of Bill Harrison Associates

RURAL HALL, N.C. Billy Harold (Bill) Harrison, 74, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at the Forsythe Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C., following a period of declining health. Mr. Harrison was born on March 15, 1929, in Paris, Ark., to the late Ben Bentley and Bessie Real Harrison. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rural Hall. He held real estate broker and general contractor licenses in the state of Florida and was retired in 1987 as president/CEO of Bill Harrison Associates Inc.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Modene Fuller Harrison in 1981 and his brother, Joe Harrison in 2002. Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Nada Bodenhamer Harrison; a son, David Harrison of Rural Hall; a daughter and son-in-law, Billie Jo Calvert and husband Kirtes of Missouri; three step-children, Keith Gregory and wife Jeanne Gregory of Union, Jerry Gregory of Fayetteville, N.C. and Cynthia Lee of Rural Hall; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Rural Hall officiated by Pastor Benny Sprouse and the Rev. Kirtes Calvery. Burial will follow in the Rural Hall Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. Kathy H. Little
Union native

Kathy Horne Little, 49, of 231 Hames Ave., wife of Robert (Doc) Little, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at 2:45 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Little was born in Union on March 19, 1954, a daughter of Lewis E. and Mamie Lou Roark Horne of Union. She attended Glory Baptist Church and had attended Union High School.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Jessica Levister of Union; a sister, Barbara H. McCall of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Betty Horne of Union; her mother-in-law, Daisy Little of Union and two special nieces, Kacie McCall Petrie and Megan A. McCall. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Chris Carr.

Entombment will be in Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Active pallbearers will be Albert Roark, Russell F. Roark, David Faulks, George (Pudding) Rumph, Shane Petrie and Tim Cooper. The body remained at the funeral home where the familyl received friends Friday night from 7 until 9. The family is at the home of her niece, Kacie McCall Petrie, 408 Tony Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

The body will remain at the funeral home. The family is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Barbara Kitchens, 233 Woodhaven Drive, Union, and will receive friends at the cemetery Friday immediately following the committal services. Col. Arthur E. Brown Sr.
Air Force veteran

Col. Arthur E. Brown Sr., Retired USAF, of Jonesville, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in RoseCrest Retirement Center in Inman. He was born on July 31, 1911 in the Gocher Community of Cherokee County, the son of the late Jonathan Cleveland Brown and Eugenia Burgess Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Carnell Brown, and two brothers, Ray and John Wilkes Brown.

He is survived by a son, Arthur E. Brown Jr. of Jonesville and his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Brown Jordan and Steve Jordan of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, Jeb and Julie Martin of Portland, Texas, Angela Martin Burton and Bill Burton of The Woodlands, Texas and Arthur W. Brown of Marble Falls, Texas; three great-grandsons, Sterling Martin, Zachary Martin and Jake Burton. In addition, he leaves his two devoted sisters, Mrs. Pearle B. Calvert and Mrs. Gene B. Fowler of Jonesville and his brother, Retired Chaplain J.C. Brown of Greenville.

Col. Brown graduated from Clemson University in 1932 where he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Following his graduation, he married Ruth Carnell of Union, and they reported for his first assignment as commander of a CCC camp in Manteo, N.C. His love for his country, and his fascination with the role of airplanes in defending our country, led him to a highly successful 30-year career in the military. He was instrumental in the conversion of the early Army Air Corps into the U.S. Air Force.

Prior to and during World War II, he served as second in command of the Air Force Flight Training School in Columbus, Miss., where pilots of such noted missions as the Memphis Bell were trained. After 30 years of duty in the Air Force, he retired to a civilian post and became a director of California Eastern Airlines, where he continued to train pilots for the military in the private sector. He had a great interest in all sports, but golf was his game.

Among his numerous trophies, he loved to tell the story of winning first place in the Mississippi Amateur Open in 1951, while overseeing a pork barbecue in progress to serve more than 300 friends and co-workers. His positive attitude and love of his God, his family and friends never faltered. He was a devoted and loving husband to Ruth, father to Peggy and Arthur Jr., and friend to numerous people who knew, loved, and enjoyed his gifted wit and sense of humor.

Visitation was held from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Jonesville by the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Ray Long. Internment with full military rites followed at the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

The following were asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at `1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Bobby Brown, Pete Brown, Julian Fowler, Dick Fowler, Thomas Blackwell and Jack Caldwell. Memorials may be made to RoseCrest Retirement Center, 200 Fortress Drive, Inman, S.C. 29349 or to the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 748 Gaffney Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral has charge of arrangements.
