GREENWOOD — John Francis “Bunk” Monroe, 90, of 238 Grace Terrace, husband of Verena Peterson Monroe, died Aug. 20, 2001, at his home.

Willie J. ‘Agg’ Strong
GREENWOOD — Willie James “Agg” Strong, 70, of 115 Strong St., husband of Marie Williams Strong, died Aug. 20, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Homer and Daisy Mathis Strong. He was a former employee of Belk’s Department Store and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Willie Juner Strong of Greenwood; a daughter, Helen Ann Strong of Greenwood; a brother, Homer Juner Strong of Greenwood; three sisters, Doris Butler and Shirley Ross, both of Greenwood and Ethel Williams of Baltimore; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Eula Bagwell
DONALDS - Eula Inez Dodson Bagwell, aged 97, departed this life on Wednesday, August 15, 2001, at the Carlisle Nursing Center in Due West.
The daughter of James Fletcher and Dora Matilda Martin Dodson, she was born near Due West, S.C. (Abbeville County) on August 24, 1903. She was descended from several of the earliest European families in upper South Carolina. These included the Dodsons who came from Virginia and helped to found Turkey Creek Baptist Church, the Martins and Dunns from Northern Ireland who were among the early Presbyterians in the Due West-Donalds area, the Richeys and Shirleys from Pennsylvania, the Elgins and Kays from Maryland. She was a distant cousin of ante-bellum leader John C. Calhoun and former president, Jimmy Carter. She graduated from Donalds High School where she was an honor student and she attended Erskine College. She was a teacher at the Old Columbia School at Princeton, S.C. (Greenville County) before her marriage to William Francis Bagwell of Donalds in 1921.
For a number of years they lived in Greenville, S.C. and later in Hodges, S.C., where her husband was a business and church leader, as well as mayor for many years before his death in 1980. For many years, she was a Sunday School teacher and WomenÕs Missionary Union leader in Greenville at Poe Baptist Church and later in Hodges at Providence Baptist Church. She was also active in school and community affairs. She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Lois (Mrs. Clifton Stone) and Lucille (Mrs. Leland Walker), and two brothers, Clifton L. Dodson and William Earle Dodson.
She is also survived by two children, Katherine (Mrs. M. Lewis Coleman) of Lakeland, FL, and Dr. William F. Bagwell of Donalds, SC. A daughter, Louise (Mrs. Neal Mabrey) predeceased her in 1973. Also surviving her are 4 grandchildren and a number of great and great-great-grand-children, plus nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 1-2:00 P.M. Monday at Pruitt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday at Pruitt Funeral Home with Rev. Bennie Ridlehoover officiating.

Josie Cronic
GREENWOOD — Josie Wells Cronic, 86, former resident of 127 W. Laurel Ave., widow of William Gordon Cronic, died Aug. 17, 2001, at Westwood Nursing Home in Evans, Ga.
born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Martin Maxwell and Lenora Jeannette Hamilton Wells. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Winthrop College. She taught in the Greenwood public schools and retired from Northside Junior High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher’s Society, the D.A.R. and the Daffodial Garden Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Lee Harwell of Evans, Ga.; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. John Livingston and Dr. John Wall. Burial is in Edgewood cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jesse Cole, John Harwell, Rob Adams, Robert Nickles, Walker Mobley and Bobby Anderson.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday. The family will receive friends in the church lobby from 10 to 11 Monday.

Buddy Dorn
BRADLEY — Floyd Edward “Buddy” Dorn, 69, of 408 Rushville Road, husband of Mimmie Chaffin Dorn, died Aug. 17, 2001, at his home.
born in Greenwood County, Nov. 23, 1931, he was the son of the late Eddie E. and Annie Deal Dorn. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War and retired from E.I. Dupont in Aiken. A member of Bold Springs Baptist Church and the Brotherhood of the church, he was also a member of the VFW Lodge #5877 in Aiken.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Tina D. Sowers of Los Alamos, N.M.; three sons, Charles “Eddie” Dorn, Roger “Quail” Dorn and Phillip “Jelly” Dorn, all of Bradley; two sisters, Aileen D. Adams of Ninety Six and Josie D. Walker of Greenwood; six grandchildren, Sonny Dorn, Sabrina Dorn, Nikki Dorn, Colby Dorn, Joseph Sowers and Amy Dorn; three great-grandchildren, Carlie Dorn, Isiah Dorn and Little Darrell Craig.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be George Deal, Billy Dorn, Jay McCarthy, Darrell Craig, Phillip Dorn, Roger Dorn, Joseph Sowers and Colby Dorn.
Honorary Escorts will be members of the Brotherhood of Bold Springs Baptist Church along with Broadus Collins, Richard Melton, John Tom Bannister, Roger Dillashaw, Mike Chaffin, Leon “Rooster” Adams and Tim Adams.

HODGES — Otis Lee “Vegetable Man” Ellis, 67, of 122 Roundtree Drive, husband of Mamie “Becky” Lomax Ellis, died Aug. 18, 2001 at VA Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.
born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Oliver Nelson Ellis Sr. and Rosella Ward Ellis. He was a produce saleman and a member of the Macedonia C.M.E. Church in Hodges.
Survivors in addition to his wife are two sisters, Loraine Williams of Due West and Ruby Moses all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Oliver Jr. Ellis, Todd Ellis and Ralph Ellis of Due West and a stepdaughter, Terry (Herman) Cohen of Hodges.

Brenda Marie Griffin
COLUMBIA — Brenda Marie Griffin, 36, formerly of 110 Oakhill Drive, died Aug. 17, 2001 in Columbia. born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of Willie and Rosetta Lyons Griffin. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church.
Surviving are her parents of Greenwood; one son, De’Marco Griffin of Greenwood; three daughters, Sharrika Griffin, Felicia Griffin and Ca’Daria Griffin all of Greenwood; two brothers, Melvin Griffin of Rock Hill and Willie Griffin of Greenwood; six sisters, Angela Tamara Griffin, Tonia Griffin and Christa Griffin and Linda Oliver of Greenwood and Wanda Sussewell Dula of Rome, Ga. and one grandaughter.
The family is at the home of her parents, 1609 E. Laurel Ave., Greenwood.

Grady C. McCurry
ABBEVILLE — Grady C. McCurry, 69, of 601 N. Main St., husband of Syble V. McCurry, died Aug. 18, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Frank and Icebell Tyner McCurry. He was a member of Crossroads Fellowship and was retired from Pirelli Cable. He was a Mason having served as past Master of Clinton Lodge 3, past Hesperian of No. 17, past Illustrious Master, member of Desawyer Council 16, Knights Temple Of Greenwood and a Shriner.
Surviving are his wife of the home; four sons, Charles F. McMurry, Joseph E. McMurry, W.E. McMurry and G.C. McCurry, all of Abbeville; two brothers, Bobby L. McCurry of Abbeville and Jerry McCurry of Greenwood; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are brothers of the Masonic Order.
Services will be 6 p.m. Monday at Crossroads Fellowship, conducted by the Rev. Rickey Knight and the Rev. James Blackwell. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville. The body will be placed in the church at 5 Monday.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville.

Max Theron Sargent
AIKEN — Max Theron Sargent, 80, of Aiken, husband of Frances Jane Gurly Sargent, died Aug. 17, 2001 at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
born in Belton, he was a son of the late Thomas Lester Sargent and Bernice Elrod Sargent. He retired from the maintenance department at E.I. Dupont after 31 years of service. He was a member of Foreman Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee since 1955; had 37 of perfect attendance at Sunday school, was a member of Promise Keepers and was president of his Sunday school class.
Survivors in addition to his wife are two daughters, Norma Jean Shealy and Kathy Ann Barher both of Chapin; two brothers, Eugene Sargent of Greenwood and J.T. Sargent of Anderson; two sisters, Laura Fortson and Jennifer Trotter both of Greenwood; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services are at 3 today at Foreman Baptist Church in New Ellenton, conducted by the Rev. Rick Rogers.

GLOVERVILLE— Virginia C. Storey, 64, of 296 Oak St., widow of Albert Storey, died Aug. 16, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Cleophus Corley and Annice Kirkland Corley. She was a retired textile employee and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 10601.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Rosier of Saluda; two sisters, Doris McGee of Ridge Spring and Delora Berry of Saluda and a great granddaughter.
Services are at 2 today at Ramey Funeral Home in Saluda, conducted by the Rev. Kelly McKnight. Burial is in the Corley Family cemetery.

Cornelia Trail
GREENWOOD — Cornelia Wiley Trail, 65, resident of 217 Karen Way, wife of Ladson G. Trail, died August 17, 2001 at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Abbeville County, May 10, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Robert M. and Lou Ella Weeks Wiley. She attended the Abbeville Public schools and was retired from Eastwill Sports Wear.
She was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. A member of Harris Baptist Church, she was also a member of the Willing Workers Sunday school class and the Joy Group of the Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Wayne Brooks of Hodges and Annette and Bruce Wheatley of Martinez, Ga; two sisters, Virginia Gunter of Waterloo and A.B. Davis of Greenwood; grandchildren, Joey Brooks and Heather Brooks, both of Greenwood and Scott Wheatley of Martinez, Ga.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from the Harris Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Thomas and the Rev. David Clegg officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joey Brooks, Scott Wheatley, Gene Latham, Larry Mobley, Bobby Woods and Alan Todd.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Monday.
The family is at the home on Karen Way and will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 Sunday afternoon.
