Kate S. Whitehead

Kate Smith Whitehead, 79, wife of Ben M. Whitehead of 256 Meansville Road, Union, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 9:10 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. The family is at the home, 256 Meansville Road. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Irene E. Boling
Retired nurse

INMAN Ñ Irene (Tiny) Turner Boling, 78, of 221 Peach St., died Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Mrs. Boling was a native of Union County and was a daughter of the late Raymond H. and Perna Meeks Turner.

She was the wife of the Rev. Claude Boling for 52 years. She was a retired licensed practical nurse, having worked for 26 years in nursing with the last 14 years at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. She attend Montreat College and the Raleigh School of Practical Nursing. She was a member of Boiling Springs First Baptist Church, a member of the Sanctuary Sunday School Class, a former Nursery Department teacher for a number of years, former organist of Lockhart Presbyterian Church and a volunteer for Mobile Meals.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Claudia B. Hendley and husband, Albert, of Boiling Springs and Sheila B. Guffey and husband, Russell, of Boiling Springs; a son, David Boling of the home; two sisters, Carrie Bell Harris of Lockhart and Hazel Day of Sumter. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Claudette Hendley and Michelle Hendley; two grandsons, Zane Guffey and Matthew Guffey.

Visitation will be tonight from 7 until 9 at Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Eggers Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Jack E. Hames and the Rev. Marshall Williams will officiate. Interment will be in Good Shepherd Memorial park.

Memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 286007-3000 or to Mobile Meals, P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304. The family is at the residence. The Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs has charge of arrangements.

Mae L. Fowler
Retired textile worker

Mae Lipsey Burgess Fowler, 95, widow of Nolan Fowler, of White Oak Manor, Rock Hill, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. Mrs. Fowler was born in the Pea Ridge Community of Union on Dec. 25, 1907, a daughter of the late Silas and Florence Raines Lipsey. She was a retired textile worker and of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Fowler was first married to the late Judson Burgess.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Clara and Marvin Dantzler of Union and Ella Mae Worley of Springhill, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leroy and Ada Burgess of Smyrna and Carroll and Pat Burgess of Dallas, N.C.; 16 grandchildren, Steven Baldwin, Jeanette Tatum, Ronnie Worley, Frazier Worley, JR Worley, Linda Worley, Dorothy Worley, Jamie Worley, Shirley Johnson, Betty Jo Rowe, Sherry Mills, Robby Burgess, Debbie Dickerson, Shane Burgess, Sam Burgess and JR Burgess; 26 great-grandchildren; a number of great-great grandchildren and a number of step grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Fowler was predeceased by three brothers, Jesse Lipsey, Bill Lipsey and John Lipsey and a sister, Lizzie McFalls. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home of her son, Leroy Burgess, 175 Clarks Court, Smyrna, 29743 and at the home of her daughter, Clara Dantzler, 119 Old Ferry Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Gladys Hooper
Retired from Lexington School District

WEST COLUMBIA Gladys E. Hooper, 63, wife of Harold D. Hooper Sr. of West Columbia, died Monday, April 26, 2004. She was a former resident of Union and had been a local area resident since 1967. She was a member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church and was retired from Lexington School District 2. She was predeceased by her father, Woodrow Wilson Estes.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her mother, Lucille Gregory of Union; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda H. and Tim Elrod of Lexington, Debbie H. and Ronnie Marchant and Cindy Hooper, all of West Columbia; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold D. Jr. and Laura Hooper of West Columbia; a sister, Marie Duncan of Jonesville; two sisters-in-law, Gaynelle Wade (Tom) and Mary Ann Kirby (Jr.), all of Union; six grandchildren, Brian Elrod, Lindsay Elrod, Ashley Marchant, Brandon Marchant, Dustin Hooper and Dana Hooper; several nieces and nephews; and Nala, her Shih Tzu and loving companion.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Holland Avenue Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Charles Wilson. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of Faith, Hope and Love Sunday School Class and Berea Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington has charge of arrangements.

Kate Whitehead
Retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital

Kate Smith Whitehead, 79, wife of Ben M. Whitehead of 256 Meansville Road, Union, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 9:10 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Whitehead was born in the Mt. Lebanon Community of Buffalo on March 6, 1925, a daughter of the late John B. and Mary Lawson Smith. She was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Mrs. Whitehead was a retired dietetic supervisor at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was the last survivor of 11 children in her immediate family. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Marlene Whitehead of Buffalo; a sister-in-law, Joretta Smith of Union and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Aulbrey Calvert and the Rev. Phillip Chandler. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Maness, Jimmy Heatherly, Jason Smith, Arley Eller, William Smith and Stanley Hodge. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 256 Meansville Road, Union.

Memorials may be made to the Fairforest Baptist Church Building Fund, 1917 Jonesville Highway, Union, S.C. 29379 or to the Buffalo United Methodist Church Building Fund, 108 Hill St., Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Charles E. Jeter
Union native

Charles Edward Jeter, 45, of the Central Carolina Health and Rehabilitation Center, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 in Providence Hospital in Columbia after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.

Lucile E. Rogers
Retired beautician

Lucile Edens Charles Rogers, 82, wife of Harold F. Rogers of 108 Hillcrest Drive, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at 7:55 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Rogers was born in Union on May 20, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel Vance Edens Sr., and Marguerite Plate Edens. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a life-time member of the Retired Naval Officers Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Union High School where she was a member of the basketball team and was a retired beautician. Mrs. Rogers was first married to the late J.D. Charles.

Surviving in addition to her husband are: to step-sons, Don Robert Rogers and Terry J. Rogers, both of Ohio and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Myra Willard, Roy Edens and Vance Edens. Cryptside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday from noon until 1:30 p.m. The family is at the home, 108 Hillcrest Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Janette H. Dawkins

CARLISLE Janette H. Dawkins, wife of John Dawkins, of 143 Family Circle , Carlisle, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Whitney Funeral Home.

Grady H. Nichols
Self-employed carpenter

CHESTER Grady Henry Nichols, 59, husband of Martha C. Nichols, of 99 Denver St., Chester, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Chester County Hospital. He was born in Chester July 5, 1944, a son of the late Newton Gaston Nichols and Virginia Dunlap Nichols. He attended schools in Chester County and graduated high school in California. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a brother, Barnette Nichols of Richburg; and two sisters, Cora Bentley of Lockhart and Ann Parker of Union. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Edgemoor by the Rev. John Porter and the Rev. Frank Cantrell. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. today at Barron Funeral Home. Barron Funeral Home of Chester has charge of arrangements.

Charles E. Jeter
Union native

Charles Edward Jeter, 45, of the Central Carolina Health and Rehabilitation Center, died April 27, 2003 in Providence Hospital in Columbia after a long illness. He was born in Union County on June 24, 1957, a son of the late Jake Kennedy and Ruby Rice Jeter. He was a common labor worker and a member of McBeth Baptist Church.

Survivors include an uncle, Robert Grier of Dover, Del.; an aunt, Bobbie Sanchez of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three cousins, Wade Hampton of Union, John W. Hampton of Portsmouth, Va. and Cal W. Hampton Jr. of Lompoc, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at McBeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. T.D. Mauney officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be Thursday 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The family is at the home of his cousin, Wade Hampton, 104 Reed St. The Carolina mortuary has charge of arrangements.
