born in San Francisco, she was a daughter of the late Oliva V. Spohn and James Bowen.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Sue Land of Iva, Jo-Anna Casey and Jeannie Ervin, both of Abbeville; five sons, Robert Asher and William Asher of Iva, John Asher of California, Michael Reyes and Tony Reyes, both of Abbeville; a sister, Joy Irene Conger of Reno, Nev.; three brothers, James Bowen of Casa Grande, Ariz., Pete Brown and Bobby Mighil, both of Oregon; and 22 grandchildren.

ABBEVILLE — Rita Mary Hawco Rooney, of Abbeville Nursing Home, widow of John “Jack” Rooney, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 at the nursing home.

GREENWOOD – Jessie Bell Haralson Scott, 82, resident of 301 Folly Farm Road, widow of Carl Aiken Scott, Jr., died December 29, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
born in Hart County, GA, October 31, 1922, she was a daughter of the late John Quincy and Vera Jane Stamps Haralson. She formerly owned and operated Scott’s Drive-In and more recently was manager of Little Pigs Barbeque of Greenwood. Mrs. Scott was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are four daughters, Sherrill and husband Charles Allen of Myrtle Beach, Carolyn P. Scott of Florence, Betty and husband Patrick Ross, II of Old Fort, NC and Bobbie and husband John McDowell of Greenwood. Two sons, John C. and wife Lynne Scott of Easley and Jesse L. Scott and wife Candy Buchanan of Columbia. Two brothers, Marvin Haralson and Thomas Haralson, both of Greenwood, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Frank Thomas officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jason Allen, Scott Allen, Brad Scott, Craig Scott, Charles Allen, John McDowell and Pat Ross.
The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 Friday afternoon.

Carol Cephronia Burnett Dorn, 64, of 412 Shrine Club Road, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 at her home.
born in Savannah, Ga., she was a daughter of Lester Harris Burnett and the late Marguerite Duke Burnett. Formerly of Emerald Island, N.C., she was a floral designer in Emerald Island and at Fooshe’s Flower Cottage in Greenwood. She was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include her father of the home; two daughters, Lillian D. Calloway of Liberty, N.C., and Kelly D. Boyd of Washington, N.C.; a brother, Lester Duke Burnett of Greenwood; a sister, Brenda B. Lomas of Greenwood; and five grandchildren.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John L. Setzler. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Steve Drummond, Lester Dee Burnett, Hayes Burnett, Kevin Boyd, Dale Nixon and Rick Lomas.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.

Mary O. McCall
GREENWOOD – Mary O. McCall, 80, contributing writer to The Index-Journal, and longtime resident of Greenwood, died Monday evening, December 27th in the St. Francis Hospital in Greenville. Mrs. McCall, known locally for her frequent columns, and Christmas stories, which became an annual holiday staple for The Index Journal for the past several decades, was involved for many years with Greenwood Writer’s Guild, where she served as President. She was instrumental in bringing numerous literary notables to the community. This year was the first in recent memory that Mrs. McCall did not publish a Christmas story.
born in Annapolis, Maryland, Mrs. McCall was among the first women to enlist in the (U.S. Navy) Waves during World War Two, and she wrote often of, and was involved extensively with, veteran’s issues. She was exposed to the world of journalism at an early age through her mother, Natalie Bond, who was a noted columnist and cartoonist for The Newark Star Journal and other newspapers. She was a devout member of Greenwood’s Westminster Presbyterian Church. Traveling extensively with her husband of 30 years, Mickey McCall, Mrs. McCall resided in California, Hawaii, Florida and Virginia before settling in Greenwood in 1970.
Mrs. McCall is survived by her son, Rod McCall of Hillsboro, New Mexico; her son, Bill McCall of Charlotte; her daughter, Annie Fuller of Greenville; her daughter, Beth Gray of Greenwood; her daughter Caroline Olenoski of Austin, Texas; nine grand-children, Shane McCall of Baltimore, Matt McCall of Charlotte, Amy Fuller of Greenville, Josh Fuller of Greenville, Lindsay Gray, Hannah Gray, Micah Gray of Greenwood, Sophie and Sadie Olenoski of Austin, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Wells Gray Gunter of Greenwood, and Cheyenne Fuller of Greenville; sons-in-law, Frank Fuller of Greenville, Bill Gray of Greenwood, and John Olenoski of Austin, Texas.
Private burial service will be Thursday, December 30th at 12:30 PM at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Attending pastors for the burial services will be Reverend Frank Fuller and Reverend Chris Leonard. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Family will receive friends following the service at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

GREENWOOD – Nancy Jane Terrell, 75, of 516 Bolt Avenue, wife of James E. Terrell, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
born in Pikeville, KY, she was a daughter of the late Preston and Mary Robinson Thacker. She was retired from The Clothesline and was of the Baptist faith.
She was twice married
, first to the late Bradley Kinney and was also preceded in death by a son, Paul Douglas Kinney and a stepdaughter, Brenda Wilson.
Surviving is her husband of the home; two daughters, Gloria Kinney of the home and Mrs. Brandon (Sheila) Langley of Greenwood; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Danny (Janice) Thompson and Mrs. Jimmy (Debbie) Babb, both of Greenville; a stepson, Jimmy Terrell and his wife, Debbie, of Travelers Rest; two sisters, Mabel Robinson of Shelbiana, KY and Emogene Scutchfield of Ocala, FL; a brother, Chester Thacker of Louisville, KY; a granddaughter raised in the home, Little Nancy Stevens of the home; 12 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Greenwood Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum with the Rev. Chris Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Michael Stevens, Jr., Bradley Haskin, Eshane Cooley, Rick Roenicke, Brandon Langley, Jr., Eric Terrell, Scott Witham and Jimmy Terrell, Jr.

Carl A. Bumgarner
CLINTON — Carl A. Bumgarner, age 72, of 301 N. Adair St., died Monday, December 27th in the Laurens County Hospital.
He was born in Union County and was the son of the late Grover G. and Annie Lee Keller Bumgarner.
Mr. Bumgarner formerly worked at Bain’s T.V. Service in Whitmire and retired from Whitten Center. He was a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church in Whitmire and attended the Hurricane Baptist Church in Clinton. He was also a Life Member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, was a volunteer at the United Missions and was a U.S. Air Force veteran in the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Kelley Bumgarner of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean Allen and Cyndi Bumgarner of Fountain Inn and Curtis Lee and Jeanie Bumgarner of Honea Path; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandi B. and Travis Doolittle of Greenwood; one brother, Gene Bumgarner of Whitmire; three sisters, Louise B. Eaves and Lucy B. Eaves, both of Whitmire and Betty Jo B. Sims of Union; two grandchildren, Westley Bumgarner and Carli Grace Bumgarner, both of Fountain Inn; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Hurricane Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

LAURENS — Kathryn Goggans Denny, 92, formerly of Laurens, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.
born in Cross Hill, she was a daughter of the late James Oscar and Kate Addison Denny. She lived most of her life in Columbia, where she retired from the Baptist Book Store and was a member of Shandon Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Sara D. Scherer of Lake Worth, Fla.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church cemetery, Cross Hill, conducted by the Rev. Phil Hall.
Visitation is graveside after the services.

ABBEVILLE — Roy Lee Duskin, 64, of 1590 Highway 20, husband of Carolyn Ethridge Wiley Duskin, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
born in Cullman, Ala., he was a son of the late Vernal W. and Exer Mae Hill Duskin. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and retired from the fast food industry after 30 years of service.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Kenneth L. Duskin of Williamston; a stepdaughter, Patty Guy of Abbeville; a brother, Larry Duskin of Indianapolis; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Westside Baptist Church. Burial is in Long Cane cemetery. Visitation is 1-2:30 today at Harris Funeral Home.
